2014 BISHOP’S APPEAL KICKS OFF
THIS WEEKEND

It’s time to begin our 2014 Bishop’s Appeal. Last
year, more than 13,000 Catholics throughout the East Bay
joined together and contributed $2.5 million in funds needed
to provide for Diocesan ministries and services that serve
thousands of people in need throughout the diocese.

2014. El año pasado, más de 13.000 católicos a lo largo de la
bahía este se unieron y contribuyeron $2,5 millones en
fondos necesarios para proveer a los ministerios diocesanos y
servicios que sirven a miles de personas necesitadas a través
de la diócesis.
The theme of this year’s Appeal is “Set the World on
Fire”. It is said that St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the
Jesuits, sent his companions on mission around the globe
with this exhortation … to go forth to evangelize and teach
the people of the world about Jesus and to instill a passion for
the Gospel.
As Catholics, we too are sent forth through our
baptism and confirmation in the Spirit to go forth in mission
to set the world on fire. For most of us, that means we serve
our local community at our parish or in our neighborhood.
For others, it still means going forth across the world to serve
those most in need. But for all of us, it means that we are
required in some way to share our time, talent and treasure to
serve our sisters and brothers and to build the Kingdom of
God in our daily lives.
The 2014 Bishop’s Appeal is but one way to
respond to this call to serve and share, as we set the world on
fire. Here in the Oakland Diocese we are asked to pray for
our fellow parishioners, our leadership and clergy, for those
who are served by the many ministries and programs offered
by the Church, and for the success of the 2014 Bishop’s
Appeal.
Every member of the faith community of our local
Church is also asked to participate in whatever way possible
by making a gift. All gifts to the 2014 Bishop’s Appeal are
equally important. As faithful stewards of our faith and the
many gifts that God has generously bestowed on each of us,
we are asked to make a sacrificial, proportionate and planned
gift.
Those who are blessed with more are challenged to
give more, but everyone is asked to respond. Imagine what
can be done in the name of our local faith community if every
parishioner participated in this annual appeal!
The total budget for the Oakland Diocese is
approximately $17 million; and of that, the budget for
diocesan-wide ministries that serve those in need is $7
million. The funds raised through the Bishop’s Appeal
provide for some of the money needed by these vital services.
Please review the materials being sent to your home
this week and prayerfully consider a gift to this year's
Bishop’s Appeal and how we, together, can set the world on
fire. Thank you for your previous support and your prayers.
El tema de la campaña este año es "Set the World on
Fire". Se dice que San Ignacio de Loyola, el fundador de los
jesuitas enviados a sus compañeros en misión alrededor del
mundo con esta exhortación... para ir a evangelizar y enseñar
a la gente del mundo acerca de Jesús y para inculcar la pasión
por el Evangelio.
Como católicos, nosotros también estamos enviados
a través de nuestro bautismo y la confirmación en el espíritu
de ir en misión a incendiar el mundo. Para la mayoría de
nosotros, eso significa que servimos a nuestra comunidad
local en nuestra parroquia o en nuestro vecindario. Para otros,
significa aún va adelante en todo el mundo para servir a los
más necesitados, pero para todos nosotros, significa que
estamos obligados de alguna manera de compartir nuestro
tiempo, talento y tesoro para servir a nuestros hermanos y
hermanas y para construir el Reino de Dios en nuestras vidas
cotidianas.
Llamamiento del Obispo de 2014 es una manera de
responder a este llamado a servir y compartir como
incendiamos el mundo. Aquí en la diócesis de Oakland se nos
pide orar por nuestros feligreses, nuestro liderazgo y clero,
para aquellos que son atendidos por los muchos ministerios y
programas ofrecidos por la iglesia y para el éxito de la
apelación del Obispo 2014.
Todos los miembros de la comunidad de fe de nuestra
iglesia local también se le pide participar en cualquier forma
posible de hacer un regalo. Todos los regalos al llamamiento del
Obispo 2014 son igualmente importantes. Como fieles
mayordomos de nuestra fe y los muchos dones que Dios ha
concedido generosamente sobre cada uno de nosotros, se nos

the volunteers who worked so hard to make
our Crab Fest on Saturday a success. Ilka and
her team put forth a huge effort to make this event so special.
We also wish to thank all those who donated items for the
Raffle, and of course, all those who attended. This is a major
fundraiser for our parish and we truly appreciate your support.
We will publish the net proceeds as soon as the figures are
available.

FR. BARRY HEALING RETREAT: Fr. Michael Barry,
SSCC, will conduct a Healing Retreat from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
on Saturday, Feb.15, at St. Joseph the Worker (1640 Addison
St. at Jefferson) in Berkeley. Fr. Barry is well known to many
Divine Mercy devotees. He is director of Mary’s Mercy Center
in Southern California. He will be ministering on healing of the
whole person and healing of the family tree.
EL P. BARRY HEALING RETREAT: El P. Michael Barry,
SSCC, llevará a cabo un retiro de sanación de 10 a 17:30 del
sábado, Feb.15, en San José Obrero (1640 Addison St. en
Jefferson) en Berkeley. El P. Barry es conocido por muchos
devotos de la Divina Misericordia. Es director del centro de la
Misericordia de María en el sur de California.
