Thank you so much for your patience during this entire process. It has a been a few long and challenging months and we couldn’t have done this without your help. Many thanks to the parents and
families who have helped us so much during the past few weeks.

The new Latino Family Center will be located at: 5450 Second Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15207. It is
very easy to find via buses 56, 57 and 93. As a matter of fact, the bus stop is directly across from the
building! (more information on page 3).

En este grupo, voluntarios trabajan con todos los niños
que vienen con sus madres para la Clase de Inglés. Este
grupo se enfoca en preparar a los niños para la Escuela y
revisan los colores, las letras, y más! El desayuno se
sirve a las 10:00AM.
Kindergarten Readiness
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10:30am—12:00pm
In this group, volunteers work with children that come with
their parents to the ESL class. This group focuses on preparing children for Kindergarten by reviewing the alphabet, the
colors, and more! Breakfast is serves at 10:00am before the
ESL class.

Este verano, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership quiere mejorar el verano de sus hijos con
maneras nuevas y emocionadas de aprender en el espacio popular de Market Square
(Downtown). Cada martes, entre 10am—11:30am, niños y sus padres pueden participar en
actividades divertidas y educativas. Habrá invitados especiales, tiempo para los cuentos,
artesanias para hacer, y actividades diversas cada semana. Además, ¡el evento es gratis! No se

This summer, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership wants to enhance your children’s summer with
new and exciting ways to learn at the popular downtown destination, Market Square. Every
Tuesday, from 10am—11:30am, kids and their parents can particpate in fun and educational
activities. There will be special guests, story time, craft time, and different activities every week.
Also, the event is free! Don’t stay home all summer, spend some time in Market Square!

Center Corner
Caroline está muy feliz de empezar en el Centro Latino Familiar
como especialista de desarrollo de la familia. Ella es de North Carolina y tambien ha vivido en la Republica Dominicana. Caroline
tiene experiencia en trabajo social y ha trabajado con familias latinas en Pittsburgh y North Carolina. Será un honor servir a las familias del Centro Latino, y está emocionada de conocer a tod@s!
Caroline is very happy to start at the Latino Family Center as a
family development specialist. She is from North Carolina and
has also lived in the Dominican Republic. Caroline has a background in social work and has worked with Latino families in
Pittsburgh and North Carolina. It will be an honor for her to
serve the center's families, and she is excited to meet everyone!

Latino desde el primer día, hace once meses. Ha sido un
placer ser testigo de todo el crecimineto: empezando con las
familias, a los programas, y finalmente con los alumnos de
ESL. Ustedes me han expuesto a la dedicación, el talento

Thank you so much for accepting me as a member of the Latino Family Center since day one, eleven
months ago. It has been my pleasure to witness so much growth, starting with the families, to the programs, and finally with my ESL students. You have exposed me to the commitment, the diverse talent, the
strength, and the sweetness that exists in the Latino community. Also, to my students, I hope that you
continue to speak in a loud voice and with a lot of confidence. You can do it!! Thank you for letting me be

Ensalada de pepino para el verano
Cucumber Salad for the Summer
Ingredientes/ingredients:
 2 pepinos grandes/2 large cucumbers
 1/2 cebolla/ 1/2 onion
 2-3 tomates/2-3 tomatoes
La Salsa/Dressing:
 3 cucharadas grandes de vinagre/3 Tbsp of vinegar
 2 cucharadas grandes de aceite de oliva/2 Tbsp of olive oil
 1 cucharadita de orégano/1 tsp of oregano
 1/8 cucharadita de sal/ 1/8 tsp of salt
Instrucciones:
Haz la salsa primero, usando la batidora. Corta los pepinos y las cebollas. Corta en dados los tomates, quitando
el jugo. Ponlo todo en una ensaladera. Añade más sal o pimienta negra si necesites. ¡Buen provecho!
Directions:
Make the dressing first by combining all of it’s ingredients. Slice the cucumbers and the onion. Dice the tomatoes, removing excess
juice. Put everything in a salad bowl and add more salt or pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Necesita/Supplies:





Harina de maiz
Corn starch
Colorante de alimiento
Baking soda
Bicarbonate
Baking soda
agua
water
Botella con jeringa (botella de
champu vacia)
Squirt bottle (empty
shampoo bottle)
Direcciones/Directions:
LLena la botella vacia 2/3 con partes iguales
del harina de maiz y del bicarbonate. Añade
algunas gotas de colorante de alimiento y tapa la botella con agua. Usa un cuchillo de
mantequilla o un palo para mezclar todo en la
botella. La mezcla es muy esposo al inicio
pero toda la mezcla va a transformer a una
pintura suave. Después de mezclarla bastante
bien, tapa la botella y agita toda la botella.
Sique a agitar la mezcla antes de usarla.
Ahora, ¡está lista!
Fill the empty bottle about 2/3 of the way with equal parts of corn
starch and baking soda. Add a few drops of food coloring and fill the
rest of the bottle with water. Using a butter knife or a stick, mix everything together. The mixture will be thick at first but will soon turn into a
smooth paint. After, the paint has been mixed, place the lid on the
bottle and shake to ensure that all the ingredients are mixed together.
Continue to shake the bottle before each use. Now, it’s ready! Enjoy!

¡Vamonos para Idlewild!
Let’s go to Idlewild!
Nos encanta nuestra tradición de ir a Idlewild cada verano con ustedes! Este verano
nuestra visita será más especial porque vamos a usar ese dÍa para celebrar a nuestros
papás (porque no pudimos celebrar en junio por causa de la mudanza).
BOLETOS: Desafortunadamente, no tenemos suficientes boletos para todas las familias.
Para hacerlo lo más justo posible, vamos hacer una loteria. Todas las familias que estan
enscritas en el Centro Latino van a ser puestas en una rifa. Una entrada por familia. Las familias que han participado en el
Centro (Ejemplo: Consejo de Padres, Las clases de Ingles, Nutricion, Pre-natales, costura, Padres Latinos Unidos en Accion)
estarán entradas dos veces en la rifa.
DETALLES: El viaje sera el 26 de Agosto. Nos vamos a ir a las 8:30am del Centro Latino (Hazelwood) y nos vamos a ir del
Parque a las 6pm. Tendermos un bus disponible para transportacion. SI USTED DESEA MANEJAR EN SU PROPIO AUTO:
Nos tiene que avisar 10 dias antes del viaje (12 de Agosto)! Si no nos llama no estaran puestos en la rifa para el proximo ano!
El 12 de Agosto es el último dÍa para reservar su espacio en el autobus. ¡Gracias por su cooperación!
We love our tradition of going to Idlewild every summer with you! This summer our trip
will be even more special because we will celebrate Father’s Day (because we weren’t
able to celebrate during June as a result of the move). Fathers, we want to celebrate you!
Unfortunately, we don’t have enough tickets for all of our families. In order to distribute
the tickets in the most fair way possible, we will have a raffle. Each family will be entered
in the raffle once. However, the families that have participated at the Center (English
classes, Pre-natal, sewing, LPUA, Parent Council, etc) will be entered twice.
We will be going to Idlewild on August 26. Please call the Center and let us know your
mode of transportation. Let us know by August 12, if you will drive directly to the park or
if you will be taking the bus with us. If you do not let us know ahead of time you will not
be eligible for the raffle next year. August 12, will be the last day to reserve your spot on
the bus. Thank you for your cooperation!
Como ha sido su experiencia con “Las Visitas en la casa” del Centro Latino (Programa PAT)?
El Centro Latino Familiar siempre está buscando maneras de mejorar los servicios que ofrecemos. Con esto en mente, estaremos haciendo una encuesta sobre sus experiencias con el programa de PAT (Visitas en la casa). Estén pendientes de una visita de nuestra voluntaria de la Universidad de Pittsburgh, Flor de Abril González en las próximas semanas!

What has your experience with the home visiting program at the Latino Family Center been?
The Latino Family Center is always looking for ways to improve the services we provide to our families. With this in mind, we are conducting a survey about your experience using our home visiting program (PAT). Keep an eye out for a visit from our volunteer from the
University of Pittsburgh, Flor de Abril Gonzalez in the upcoming weeks! The information gathered through this survey will be used to
evaluate our program and look for areas of improvement. Participation in this survey is completely voluntary and will not affect your
ability to receive these services. If you have any questions about the survey and how the information will be used, please contact Rosamaria Ponciano at the center.

Our services include, but are not limited to, in-home services focusing on child development, parenting support, prenatal support, family goal setting, literacy activities,
parent support groups, infant and toddler groups, family fun nights, and referral
services and assistance with medical, legal, and mental health services. With a
growing Latino community, we hope our services continue to grow as well!
