In the history of Afro-Colombian culture, Son Palenque is without a doubt an
exceptional band, and its history has a place at the very heart of ancestral palenquera
music as well as at the musical intersection between Africa and Colombia, which took
place on Colombia's Caribbean coast in the 70s and 80s and which continues today
through champeta, a musical genre and dance that also bears a strong African influence.
The members of Son Palenque band grew up in rural communities fixed in time, with
deep musical roots, duels between tambora players and a legendary musical profusion
of traditional musicians that built the foundations of today's Afro-Colombian music.
Later they all migrated to the city and bit by bit made a place for themselves. The story
of this record starts on a night just like any other, at a picó, a musical block party, of
the Pablo VI neighborhood, in the city of Cartagena. It was the peak of Afro-Coastal
psychedelic music, of African music and of an endless number of musical fusions.
Excited by the gigantic party they had been at until dawn, rocked by the deafening
noise of the speakers and the records played at the picó, a few friends went to the
beaches of Marbella and improvised a musical rumba; one of them grabbed a beer
can, the other one a stick, Justo Valdez sang his beautiful melodies and the magic of
palenquera music grew mystically in front of the waters of the endless sea. "That's
where Son Palenque was born," recalls Justo with excitement and nostalgia. Enrique
Tejedor and Luciano Torres as the back-up singers, his brother Tomás Valdez in the
tambor alegre (a Colombian drum), Pánfilo Valdez as the second lead vocalist…

Little by little the group started to consolidate itself. The first chance came in 1980,
when they recorded their first single for the Fonobosa record label. Two years later
they recorded an LP, again with Fonobosa, along with Estefanía Caicedo. Then the
group recorded two LPs for the CBS music label: "La arepa asá" and "Los trotamundos
del sabor", with the production of Willie Salcedo and the sound engineering of Alfonso
Abril. These albums were recorded in the Unisón studios in Barranquilla. Later on the
band signed with the label Felito Records, in Barranquilla, which during the 80s
produced some of the finest gems of psychedelic and Afro-roots music of the time.
With Felito Records a new era began for the group. They recorded the LPs "Ane Jue"
and "African Erotic" for Félix Brutón, the owner of the label, with sound engineering
from Eduardo Dávila and the participation of great musicians like Michi Sarmiento on
saxophone, Abelardo Carbonó on guitar and his brother Abe on bass, among others.
These two LPs were a milestone in the history of Afro-Colombian music: for the first
time they showed us traditional palenquera music, chalupa, bullerengue, lumlalú and
other traditional rhythms mixed with modern arrangements of bass, guitar and
saxophone on extraordinary records.

In the mid-90s, the musical scene underwent significant changes. The LP industry
started to decline, new technologies for digital recording appeared, sequencers and
effects, that forever changed the future of music. Son Palenque lost its recording
contract, and Justo Valdez started recording songs as a solo artist for the nascent
industry of champeta criolla.
First-ever compilation of the recordings of Son
Palenque, the finest expression of the musical union
between Africa and Colombia which took place in
Colombia's Caribbean coast during the 70s and 80s.
In 1999 Son Palenque recorded for the label Palenque Records the song 'Kumina',
along with guitarist Sekou Diabate "The Gold Fingers", legendary leader of the band
Bebeya Jazz (Guinea-Conakry). Subsequently they recorded for the same label, under
the production of Lucas Silva, the record "Ma Kamajan Ri Musika Ri Palengue",
released in 2012, which marked the folkloric group's resurrection. And so Son
Palenque continues to play, 30 years after its foundation, and still has a bright future
ahead of it. The band has gone through various phases throughout time and they
always come back innovating and breaking the mold, with the depth of their roots,
their legacy and mastery in the composition of songs, masters in the conception of a
unique musical universe.
Son Palenque took the rich variety of African styles
played at the popular sound systems and merged them
into the region's traditions, giving shape to entrancing
songs which featured wonderful vocals.

En la historia de la cultura afro-colombiana, Son Palenque es sin duda un grupo aparte,
y su historia se sitúa en el corazón mismo de la música ancestral palenquera y de la
unión musical entre África y Colombia que ocurrió en la costa caribeña en las décadas
de los setenta y ochenta y llega hasta hoy, en el interior del movimiento champetúo.
Los miembros de Son Palenque crecieron en una comunidad fijada en el tiempo, con
profundas raíces musicales, duelos entre tamboreros y una profusión musical legendaria
de músicos tradicionales que dejaron sentadas las bases de la música afro-colombiana
de hoy. Más tarde todos se mudaron a la ciudad y fueron buscando su sitio. La historia
de este disco empieza una noche, una noche cualquiera en un picó del barrio Pablo VI,
en la ciudad de Cartagena. Era la época dura de la psicodelia afro-costeña, de la música
africana y de un sinfín de fusiones musicales inéditas. Emocionados por tremenda rumba
que compartieron hasta el amanecer, mecidos por el ruido ensordecedor de los
parlantes y de las placas del picó, cuatro amigos se van a las playas de Marbella e
improvisan una rumba musical; el uno agarra una lata de cerveza, el otro un pedazo de
palo, Justo Valdez canta sus bellas melodías y la magia de la música palenquera crece con
mística frente a las aguas del inmenso mar. "Allí nació el grupo Son Palenque", recuerda
con nostalgia y emoción Justo Valdez. Enrique Tejedor y Luciano Torres en los coros, su

Primer recopilatorio de las grabaciones de Son
Palenque, protagonistas de la muestra más brillante
de la unión musical entre África y Colombia que se
produjo en la costa caribeña colombiana durante las
décadas de los setenta y ochenta
Son Palenque tomó la rica variedad de estilos de
música africana que se escuchaba en los populares
picós o sound systems y los combinó con los ritmos
tradicionales de la región, dando lugar a canciones
hipnóticas con voces magistrales.
Poco a poco el grupo se empieza a consolidar. La primera oportunidad llega en 1980,
cuando graban su primer sencillo para el sello Fonobosa. Dos años más tarde graban
de nuevo para el mismo sello un larga duración con Estefanía Caicedo, y a continuación
el grupo graba dos LPs para el sello CBS: "La arepa asá" y "Los trotamundos del sabor",
con la producción de Willie Salcedo y la ingeniería de sonido de Alfonso Abril. Estos
discos serían grabados en los estudios Unisón de Barranquilla. Posteriormente el grupo
firma con el sello Felito Records, en Barranquilla, que durante la década de los 80
produjo las más finas perlas de la psicodelia y la música Afro-roots de la época. Con
Felito Records empieza una nueva etapa para el grupo. Para Félix Butrón, patrón del
sello discográfico, graban los LPs "Ane Jue" y "African Erotic", con la ingeniería de
sonido de Eduardo Dávila y la participación de grandes músicos como Michi Sarmiento
en el saxo, Abelardo Carbonó (guitarra) y su hermano Abel en el bajo, entre otros.
Estos dos LPs marcan un hito en la música afro-colombiana: por primera vez nos
muestran la música tradicional palenquera, la chalupa, el bullerengue, lumbalú y otros
ritmos tradicionales con arreglos musicales modernos con bajo, guitarra y saxo en
discos de una factura extraordinaria.
A mediados de los años 90, la escena musical sufre cambios considerables. Empieza
el declive de la industria del acetato, llegan nuevas técnicas de grabación digital,
secuenciadores y efectos que cambian para siempre el destino de la música. Son
Palenque se queda sin contrato discográfico y Justo Valdez empieza a grabar temas
como solista para la naciente industria de la champeta criolla.
En 1999 Son Palenque graba para el sello Palenque Records el tema 'Kumina', junto
con el guitarrista Sekou Diabate, líder del legendario conjunto Bembeya Jazz (Guinea
Conakry). Posteriormente graban para el mismo sello y con la producción de Lucas
Silva el disco "Ma Kamajan ri Musika ri Palengue" ("Kamajanes de la música
palenquera"), publicado en diciembre de 2012, que marca la resurrección de la
agrupación folclórica. Así, Son Palenque sigue tocando y sonando, 30 años después de
su fundación, y le queda un gran futuro por delante. Han pasado por varias épocas de
la música a través del tiempo y siempre regresan innovando y rompiendo esquemas,
con la profundidad de sus raíces, su legado y maestría en la composición de canciones,
maestros en la concepción de un universo musical único.
