Welcome to Rioja The inaugural Wines from Rioja tasting in 2013, attended by over 600 members of the UK wine trade, was a great success and highlighted the enthusiasm for a dedicated Rioja tasting in the UK. As Rioja’s largest export market, the UK is central to Rioja’s continued success as an internationally recognised premium wine region, and this tasting offers an unparalleled opportunity to showcase the quality and diversity of Spain’s flagship wine region. There’s a diverse range of over 500 red, white and rosé wines from across the Rioja region available to taste and over 100 wineries represented. Many winemakers and winery representatives are present on the 81 tables, while separate focus zones will offer themed tastings, shining a light on the breadth of styles available from the region. For those looking for something new, there’s also a dedicated area for wineries seeking importers in the UK. This year we’ve introduced a series of masterclasses to create an added educational element and offer visitors a further insight into the quality and diversity of the region. These will be led by leading experts and Rioja enthusiasts Tim Atkin MW, Sarah Jane Evans MW and Ronan Sayburn MS. You can find out more about their topics on p.105. Rioja’s offering is strikingly diverse – from fresh crisp whites, to complex, aged Grandes Reservas, and varietal wines from indigenous grapes not found anywhere else in the world. There’s no such thing as ‘a’ Rioja. You can also find the wines shown here on the individual exhibitor tables. The Focus Tables White Rioja Rioja is often associated with red wine, but the region also produces excellent white wines. Here is an opportunity to taste through the spectrum - from fresh and crisp, through to barrel-fermented and oak-aged. Rioja beyond Tempranillo Tempranillo is the main red grape associated with Rioja, but here is a chance to see the great wines Rioja is also producing from Garnacha, Graciano and Maturana. Contemporary Rioja produces a diverse selection of wines styles from traditional aged to modern. Here, the contemporary styles will be available to taste Reserva Aged for a minimum of 3 years, with at least a year in barrel, the Reserva style is unique to Rioja and offer excellent value for money. Gran Reserva Produced in top vintages, Gran Reserva wines spend at least 2 years in barrel and 3 years in bottle before release and have an exceptional capacity for further ageing. He writes for a number of publications, including The World of Fine Wine, Intelligent Life, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Imbibe, Decanter, Wine-Searcher, Fine Drink (China), and Woman and Home, and appears regularly on BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen. Tim is a member of the Three Wine Men, Co-Chairman of the International Wine Challenge and has won over 25 awards for his journalism and photography. Sarah Jane became a Master of Wine in 2006 and this year she was made a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de Vino, only the fourth woman in the organisation’s history, for her services to Spanish wine. In addition to co-chairing the DWWA Spanish panel Sarah Jane has judged wine internationally in Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Georgia, Germany, as well as the UK, she has written three books, currently writes about wine for Decanter and for a number of consumer magazines, hosts consumer and specialist wine tastings, and is a former President of the Guild of Food Writers and a Founder Member of the Academy of Chocolate. Ronan has been involved in the wine business for nearly 20 years. He is currently developing his own business - The RS Wine Academy - and is a Master Sommelier (one of only 214 in the world), previous winner of the UK Sommelier of the Year competition and twice a representative for the UK in the European Sommelier Competition. Ronan is a regular judge for the Sommelier of the Year Competition and various tasting competitions and an examiner for the Court of Master Sommeliers. He previously worked for the Gordon Ramsay group as Executive Head Sommelier for eight years plus created the wine lists and trained wine service teams for Claridge’s, the Connaught, the Savoy, Boxwood Café, Maze and several overseas operations including Dubai, Tokyo and New York. Sarah Jane Evans MW Ronan Sayburn MS 106 Rioja Red Grape Varieties Tempranillo Considered native to Rioja, Tempranillo is the region’s classic red grape variety, accounting for more than 75% of vineyard area in Rioja. On its own it produces soft supple wines, with aromas of soft red summer fruits. Tempranillo produces wines of great structure, wines which can be enjoyed young and fresh for early drinking or matured for many years to become wines renowned for their depth, character and elegance. Mazuelo Known as Carignan/Cariñena elsewhere in the world, Mazuelo accounts for around 3% of plantings in Rioja, and adds colour, weight and tannins to Tempranillo blends, helping the wine to age gracefully. Mazuelo on its own is very rare. Garnacha This grape variety offers good extract and alcohol content, adding warmth and spice both for early drinking and longer aged styles of Rioja. Single varietal Garnacha wines are starting to make their way to the UK. Graciano Indigenous to Rioja, and rarely seen elsewhere, a small quantity of Graciano adds extra fruit and elegance to a Tempranillo blend, setting it in good stead for extended ageing. Plantings have increased significantly in recent years, in response to the growing popularity of 100% Graciano wines. As a varietal wine, Graciano shows great character and finesse, producing wines which are often very long lived. Maturana Tinta An ancient indigenous Rioja variety not seen anywhere else in the world, Maturana Tinta was all but extinct until its recent reintroduction, and plantings are now on the increase, as winemakers prize its deep colour, elegant acidity, and balsamic spicy character. 107 Rioja White Grape Varieties Viura Better known as Macabeo elsewhere in Spain, Viura is Rioja’s principal white grape variety, producing wines which are clean, fresh, zesty and lightly herby when young, but which also respond well to being fermented in barrel, developing complex smoky nuances. Malvasía Not to be confused with Malvasia grown elsewhere in the world (an entirely different variety), Malvasía de Rioja is used in small quantities alongside Viura to make classic oak-aged white wines. Its savoury character combined with the fresh crispness of the Viura and the vanilla of the oak produce wines of great individuality and style. Garnacha Blanca Possibly originating as a mutation of red Garnacha, this varietal possesses very similar characteristics to its red counterpart, and can be used in small amounts to add weight and body to Viura wines which are aged for 6 months or more. Small amounts of varietal wines are made from Garnacha Blanca grapes from very old vines to produce concentrated and exceptional white wines. Tempranillo Blanco Resulting from a natural genetic mutation of red Tempranillo found in an old vineyard in 1988 and not found anywhere else in the world, Tempranillo Blanco is becoming increasingly popular as a blending component, offering an intensely aromatic profile characteristic of citrus, tropical fruit, and bananas. Maturana Blanca Rioja’s oldest known variety, Maturana Blanca provides high acidity, and herbal, citrus and apple nuances to blends. As of 2007, Rioja producers have also been allowed to use the following non-indigenous varieties; Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo in minority percentages in blends to bring diversity to wine production while maintaining the wines’ identity and differentiation. 108 Rioja Subregions Rioja Alavesa Rioja Alavesa is located in the foothills of the Cantabrian mountains to the north and run to the River Ebro in the south. The mountains help create a micro-climate by offering some shelter from the Atlantic weather and wind - nonetheless the rainfall here is almost double that of Rioja Baja. Tempranillo reigns in Rioja Alavesa, accounting for around 80% of all plantings in the mostly chalk and clay soils, with Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano contributing to red blends, while Viura, Malvasía and White Garnacha are grown for white wines. Rioja Alta Rioja Alta, to the north-west and south of the Ebro River, stretches as far as the city of Logroño. Elegance and poise is the hallmark of wines made here with Rioja Alta Tempranillo. Mazuelo is occasionally added to wines from this area to add tannins and colour. Rioja Alta's wines have a particular affinity with oak barrels and extended ageing. Rioja Baja The Rioja Baja sub-region, which forms the largest portion of Rioja, extends south-east of the provincial capital, Logroño, to the small town of Alfaro. It accounts for 40% of Rioja's wine production, with most of its vineyards located south of the River Ebro. Unlike Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, the Rioja Baja has very warm and dry summers. The chalk content in the soil is minimal, with larger proportions of silt and alluvial components. The low-altitude vineyards here are mostly planted with Garnacha vines, as they are best suited to the extreme conditions, producing wines which are high in alcohol but lower in acidity and aroma
