With his departure, the Board appointed Deputy Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky as Interim Superintendent until a new superintendent is hired. During this interim time, the Board is seeking input from parents and community members about the direction is District going and the superintendent selection process. The Board has held town hall meetings in different locations within the District to talk to people and get their input. There is still time to attend one of these meetings. I invite you to attend. Review of CCSD Policies and Regulations At the February 14, 2013, regular board meeting, the Board of Trustees revised the CCSD Regulation 3210 District Funds and Fund Control; CCSD Regulation 3241 Acceptance of Gifts; CCSD Regulation 5130 School Board Student Advisory Committee and CCSD Policy 1140 Parent Involvement . Secondary Report Cards Secondary schools distribute report cards on May 3, 2013. School Board’s Town Hall Meetings The Board of School Trustees is seeking input about the direction CCSD is taking, the reforms under way, and the superintendent selection process. Trustees have scheduled a series of town hall meetings from April 16 through May 13, 2013. Please click here to see the list of meetings. In addition to the above, a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, in the theater at Rancho High School, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This meeting will be conducted in Spanish with translation in English. Click here for more information. An online survey is also available in English and Spanish for members of the public to provide input. The survey continues through Monday, May 13, 2013. Districtwide Parent Survey Districtwide Parent Survey ‐ safety, academics and friendliness. These topics and many more are the subject of the annual Clark County School District Parent Survey, available online at the district’s website, http://ccsd.net/district/surveys/parent/. The survey, open to all parents and guardians, provides feedback to the school district, which is used to improve schools and experiences of students, staff and the community. Tying into Interim Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky’s goal of increasing parent and community involvement in schools, the survey offers a unique opportunity for participants to share their school‐related experiences and partner with the CCSD to improve education. Interested parents and guardians can participate in the survey April 1 – May 21, 2013. For those parents and guardians who wish to participate, but do not have computer/Internet access, CCSD schools and school district administrative offices will have computers available. Parents and guardians with questions, who would prefer a paper copy of the survey, and/or who would like information on the nearest location offering computer access to participate in the survey, may contact the CCSD Research Department at 799‐1187. Student Graduation Schedule 2012‐2013 To see the list of the Clark County School District high school student graduation schedule 2012‐2013 go to: http://ccsd.net/students/graduation‐schedule/ CCSD Earns Top‐10 Ranking in Digital School Districts The Clark County School District (CCSD) earned a top-10 ranking in the 2012-2013 Digital School Districts Survey, sponsored by the Center for Digital Education (CDE) and the National School Boards Association (NSBA). The survey showcases exemplary school boards’ and districts’ use of technology to govern the district, communicate with students, parents and the community and to improve district operations. “It’s really exciting to see the unique and creative ways districts are using technology,” said Cathilea Robinett, CDE’s executive vice president. “These outstanding innovations are moving us forward. We see these leaders as an inspiration to other school districts to continue leading education into a digital future.” Foothill High School to Perform in 2014 Macy’s Parade Macy's officials made a surprise visit to Foothill High School on April 12, 2013, to announce the marching band will perform in the 2014 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Foothill's marching band is one of just 10 high school marching bands selected to participate in the 2014 parade, out of hundreds of applications. Four CCSD Schools among “Most Challenging” Foothill High School's Augspurger Theater explodes with confetti Four CCSD schools earned a spot on the Washington Post's list of the nation’s most challenging high schools. As reported by the Las Vegas Sun, the following CCSD schools made the Post’s rankings: Advanced Technologies Academy Clark High School Green Valley High School. Liberty High School Joint Vegas PBS for Exploration Space Tour in June Vegas PBS is sponsoring “Exploration: Space Tour” June 8 & 9, 2013. Participants will see the Space Shuttle Endeavour and tour the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Register for Free IEP Workshop set June 13 A free online workshop on Thursday, June 13, 2013 from noon to 1 p.m. will introduce participants to the Individualized Education Program (IEP), including how to use evaluations to write measurable goals and strategies to help parents become more active participants in their child’s IEP meetings. Inside Education airs every Tuesday night at 7:30 on Vegas PBS, Ch. 10. Summer School Information Available Online Curriculum and Professional Development Division’s (CPDD) high school enrichment and middle school credit recovery classes have two sessions. Session I: June 17-July 5 and Session II: July 8-25, which are 7:30 a.m.12:15 p.m. The courses are $100 per one-half credit for original credit or $50 per one-half credit for credit recovery and can be taken at designated CPDD high school sites. Contact a school location to discover the wide-range of classes offered. Pre-registration payment takes place April 29June 10 and parents may pay online with a credit card at http://www.ccsd.net/schools/summer-school to guarantee enrollment in the course(s); no refunds are available for these courses. Parents can also walk-in to register their student. Late walk-in registration will take place June 12-13 (Session I and Session II), July 2-3 (Session II only). Remember that classes may be limited or closed during late registration and that no checks or credit cards are accepted for late registration. Payment by cash or money order payable to CCSD Secondary Summer School will be accepted for late registration. Virtual High School (VHS) Online also offers summer school to make up credits or take courses for the first time. The summer session takes place June 17 - July 25 and is also $100 per one-half credit. Students can register online April 8-10 after speaking with their U.S. Army Supports STEM school counselor at http://www.ccsdde.net. Honors courses are also available for students Curriculum in CCSD during the summer sessions at VHS. The U.S. Army furthered its support for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) The Academy for Individualized Study (AIS) education and for Clark County students and also offers summer sessions from June 17educators on April 9, 2013, through its sponsorship of July 25 and an enrollment fee of $100 plus a the Nevada Region Ten80 Student Racing Challenge. $100 refundable book fee where applicable, is More than 300 CCSD students and educators required.
