A Word on the Gospel
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in
your hearing.” Luke 1:21
Early on in Jesus’ active ministry, he made it a
point to bring his message to the small community in Galilee where he spent most of his formative years. Lamentably his proclamation of the reign of God fell on a lot of
deaf ears. As the evangelist goes on to record in verses
28-30; “They rose up, drove him out of the town and led
him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been
built, to hurl him down headlong. But he passed through
the midst of them and went away.” The citizens of Nazareth believed they knew Jesus so well and would not let
themselves be open to seeing a new dimension of him.
“Is this not the son of Joseph and Mary? Are not his relatives living in our midst!” Sadly, their familiarity
with Jesus’ family and relatives led them to scoff
at His claim of fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy, seeing
grandiosity instead of the Gospel truth. As Mark
points out in his Gospel narrative upon this same
story, (Mark 6: 5) “Jesus was not able to perform
any mighty deeds there!”, as there was no faith
there.

Al principio del ministerio activo de Jesús, el hizo
un punto para llevar su mensaje a la pequeña comunidad
de Galilea, donde pasó la mayor parte de sus años de
formación. Lamentablemente su proclamación del reino
de Dios cayó sobre muchos oídos sordos. Como el
evangelista continúa de registrar en los versículos 28-30;
"Ellos se levantaron, lo expulsaron de la ciudad y lo
llevaron hasta la cumbre del monte, para lanzarlo abajo
de cabeza. Pero él pasó por en medio de ellos y se fue.
"Los ciudadanos de Nazaret creían que conocían a Jesús
tan bien y no vieron una nueva dimensión de él. "¿No es
éste el hijo de José y María? ¿No son sus parientes que
viven en medio de nosotros! "Tristemente, su
familiaridad con la familia y los parientes de
Jesús los llevó a burlarse de su reclamo de
cumplimiento de la profecía de Isaías, al ver la
grandiosidad en lugar de la verdad del Evangelio.
Como Marcos señala en su relato Evangélico
sobre esta misma historia, (Marcos 6: 5) "Jesús
no pudo realizar cualquier milagros ahí!", Ya que

The Suggestion Box—Part Two

Suggestions normally fall into three categories:
possible, possible but unlikely, and impossible. We
definitely received plenty of each.
Those of us who work in the office with Father
Paul were surprised at several comments implying that
they were denied a meeting with him, or that he would not
go along with an idea that was presented. We have never
seen Father Paul refuse to meet with anyone. Just call
and make an appointment. Be flexible in the time that is
acceptable to you. Remember that his day off is
Thursday. Unless it is a true emergency, please do not
just drop in and expect a meeting, as often happens.
If your idea has merit, but needs some more
thought, he will help you improve it. One of the highlights
of the past year was the Renewal of Wedding Vows with
Bishop Manz, which came about because someone had
an idea and Father Paul liked it and helped make it even
more special, more spiritually rewarding.
Ideas that truly reflect the faith are always
welcome. A great example is the Breakfast Club—a
place parishioners can come and get to know one another
better and build a faith community. An added benefit has
been the monthly boost in revenue, but that is not the
most important thing, especially to Father Paul. When he
was growing up, his parish was his second home, and he
wants that same feeling for everyone.
This was addressed last week—the desire for a
Spanish priest. There are many hard realities. There is a
general shortage of priests. There are not that many
Spanish priests, and not that many Mexican or South
American seminarians either. When the Apostles were
sent to “baptize all nations”, we hope they were not
criticized for their odd Aramaic accents when proclaiming
the Gospel or administering the sacraments in Greek or
Latin. This is the Year of Mercy. We can all be more kind
and merciful.
Other comments/suggestions:
Ladies bathroom too cold: We’re working on it.
There will be a cover installed over the window.
The statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe should visit
homes in the parish: Who would like to coordinate this?
More singing. A youth choir: We would love an
English choir and a Spanish youth choir. We have tried
before but not been successful. Anyone who feels
strongly about this should contact Father Paul. Choirs
take a lot of work, a lot of coordination and plenty of time
for rehearsal in order to be good, but this is a dream than
could come true.

mismo sentimiento para todos.
Esto fue dirigido la semana pasada – el deseo de un
sacerdote Español. Hay muchas realidades duras. Hay una
escasez general de sacerdotes. No hay muchos sacerdotes de
habla Español, y no muchos seminaristas Mexicanos o
Sudamericanos tampoco. Cuando fueron enviados los
Apóstoles para "bautizar a todas las naciones", esperamos que
no fueran criticados por sus acentos arameo impares al
proclamar el Evangelio o la administración de los sacramentos
en griego o latín. Este es el Año de la Misericordia. Todos
podemos ser más bondadoso y misericordioso.
Otros comentarios / sugerencias:
El Baño de Señoras está demasiado frío: Estamos
trabajando en esto. Habrá una tapa instalada sobre la ventana.
La imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe debe
visitar los hogares de la parroquia: ¿Quién le gustaría
coordinar esto?
Más canto. Un coro de jóvenes: Nos encantaría un
coro de Inglés y un coro de jóvenes en español. Hemos
intentado antes, pero no hemos tenido éxito. Cualquier
persona que se siente fuertemente sobre esto debe ponerse
en contacto con el padre Paul. Coros toman mucho trabajo,
mucha coordinación y un montón de tiempo para el ensayo
con el fin de ser bueno, pero esto es un sueño que podría
hacerse realidad.
