Convención Anual
de Profesores del
BRITÁNICO
El 29 de setiembre se llevó a cabo la 15.ª Convención Anual de Profesores del
BRITÁNICO en las instalaciones del Swissôtel, en San Isidro.
El programa contó con sesiones académicas a cargo de profesores del
BRITÁNICO y expositores extranjeros invitados: Pete Sharma (Macmillan), Peter
Moor (Pearson-Longman), Guy Brook-Hart (Cambridge University Press) y
Gustavo Ramírez (MM Publications/Anglo).
La Convención incluyó además una exposición de materiales de enseñanza a
cargo de SBS, NUTESA, Anglo ELT, Pearson, Macmillan, CUP, Heinle Cengage y
Richmond Publishing. Asimismo, nuestra Biblioteca Británica estuvo presente
con un stand donde los asistentes pudieron conocer más acerca de sus
servicios y materiales de consulta y referencia.

Cambridge Peru Team Leaders Meeting
Quality Assurance of Cambridge Speaking Tests
In early September, Pilar Ferreyros, BRITÁNICO Teacher Training Manager and PERU Regional Team Leader, attended the annual
Regional Team Leaders Meeting in Brazil which this year was extended to Latin America with the presence of the Professional Support
Leaders from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile together
with the PSL for Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru. The meeting
was led by a Cambridge representative of the Professional
Support Network for Speaking Tests, Terence Bradley.
In turn, at the end of September, the BRITÁNICO hosted the
annual Cambridge Team Leaders Meeting for Peru which was
conducted by Pilar Ferreyros in her capacity as Peru Regional
Team Leader. Team Leaders are responsible for the quality
assurance of all Cambridge Speaking tests in Peru throughout
the process of Recruitment, Induction, Training, Coordination,
Monitoring and Evaluation of all Cambridge Oral Examiners.

Conferencia LABCI 2009
Buenos Aires, Argentina
La Conferencia LABCI 2009 se llevó a cabo en Buenos
Aires, Argentina, entre el 17 y 19 de setiembre, con
la participación de más de 400 delegados de Brasil,
Méjico, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay y Perú,
aparte de representantes de reconocidas editoriales
internacionales.
Nuestros colegas tuvieron la invaluable oportunidad de compartir su vasta experiencia y de intercambiar opiniones e ideas con
otros profesores latinoamericanos. Estamos muy contentos y orgullosos de poder decir que nuestra delegación una vez más
demostró que los estándares del BRITÁNICO están dentro de los más altos de la región.
Ganador del IV Concurso de Video
Documentales
Así es mi Perú
La Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima, a través de la
Gerencia de Participación Vecinal, viene organizando el
Festival Nacional de Video Documentales, denominado Así es
mi Perú, con el objetivo de fomentar los valores y aspectos
positivos de nuestro país, a través de medios audiovisuales. El
BRITÁNICO auspició el IV Concurso, en el que resultó ganador
el Sr. Alex Córdova, a quien se le hizo entrega de un pasaje
Lima–La Habana–Lima para estudiar el curso de Realización de
Documentales en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión,
en San Antonio de los Baños – Cuba.
Sesiones Académicas en
centros
Como parte de las actividades relacionadas con la Convención
Anual de Profesores, los días 28 y 30 de setiembre nuestros
profesores pudieron asistir a sesiones académicas a cargo
de tres de los expositores participantes: Pete Sharma
(Macmillan), Peter Moor (Pearson-Longman) y Guy BrookHart (Cambridge University Press). Estas sesiones permiten
una mejor interacción entre los participantes y los especialistas
invitados, ya que se tocan temas más puntuales acordes a
los intereses de nuestros profesores. Los temas desarrollados
estaban relacionados con las nuevas pedagogías que están
surgiendo a raíz de las nuevas tecnologías y con cómo
explotar de manera más efectiva los textos que usamos en
nuestros cursos de adultos.

La banda nacional 6 Voltios se encuentra
actualmente en una etapa de cambios, siendo
el más significativo la reciente entrada de
Marcel Caillaux, nuevo bajista, en reemplazo
del recordado Emilio Bruce, quien dio un paso
al costado para dedicarse a nuevos proyectos.

El nacimiento de su hija le cambió la vida y
hoy es un padre dedicado a su familia, trabajo
y estudios, los que había dejado de lado para
dedicarse a la música. Este concierto será la
última oportunidad que tendrán los fans de
ver al Gringo en un escenario tocando las
canciones clásicas que dieron a conocer a la
banda a lo largo de 11 años de trayectoria.
Además de un vibrante espectáculo, la banda
proyectará un video con los momentos más
recordados junto a Emilio. El concierto, que
el BRITÁNICO auspicia, se llevará a cabo el
viernes 6 de noviembre en Barranco Bar (antes
Don Jijuna), a partir de la 8:00 p. m., y contará
con la participación de las bandas Inyectores,
Diazepunk, Difonía y Estado de Sitio.

Librotón 2009
Campaña permitirá que niños de bajos
recursos accedan a un libro de lectura
Con el objetivo de contribuir a elevar los índices de comprensión de lectura
en la población infantil de bajos recursos económicos, la Municipalidad de
Lima viene realizando la 5.ª Campaña de recolección de libros Librotón Perú
2009. Los textos serán recolectados del 2 de octubre al 30 de noviembre, y
todos los BRITÁNICO son centros de acopio.
Estudiantes y colaboradores del BRITÁNICO podrán donar libros nuevos o
en buen estado. En esta ocasión, se apunta a recolectar libros dirigidos a la
población infantil, debido a que existe una gran necesidad de formar hábitos
lectores en ella. Los libros donados serán seleccionados para implementar
nuevas bibliotecas en asentamientos humanos y colegios, en los que el
Programa de Bibliotecas Comunales Solidarias, de la Municipalidad de
Lima, fomenta charlas de orientación con psicólogos y educadores.
Durante las cuatro ediciones pasadas la campaña Librotón entregó más de
200 mil libros a 315 instituciones de bajos recursos económicos, gracias al
apoyo de diferentes entidades públicas y privadas.

Pintando la salud en colores de hombres y
mujeres de las Américas
Con el objetivo de incentivar la participación y creatividad de los artistas
de las Américas para la creación de reflexiones en torno a las acciones
de género y etnicidad, la Organización Panamericana de la Salud viene
organizando el Concurso de Pintura y Dibujo 2009.
El plazo para la recepción de trabajos es el 15 de noviembre de 2009.

After overcoming the difficulties of getting a UK Visa, I finally left Lima on
Saturday 11 of July. My trip had two purposes: to attend the event “Amazing
Minds” sponsored by Pearson Longman, and a course in “International
House” in London.
“Amazing Minds” was held in the buildings of the Lucy Cavendish College in
Cambridge. The speakers were G. Pickering with “Being Motivated, Staying
Motivated” and Jeremy Harmer with “Observations”. He introduced the idea
that since observations must be carried out, why not make it a profitable
experience. In our group we concluded that we should try to separate
observations from evaluations in order to really learn from the feedback,
having peer-observations, that is, to be observed by another teacher you
admire and trust.
At the same time, we were lavishly entertained with traditional English
dishes, a barbecue with a jazz-band, an evening out after going punting on
the river Cam and finally a formal dinner in Magdalene College with a live
string quartet.
On July 20, I started the
course “Current Trends:
Theory and Practice
in English Language
teaching”. We had wellqualified CELTA tutors
with experience in Britain
and abroad.
I would like to thank the
BRITÁNICO for giving me
this opportunity. I learnt
intensively during this trip, not only from the speakers, but also from the
participants and mainly from the experience in itself. I realise how wellorganised our institution is, and I appreciate the effort it takes to keep us
teachers qualified. Now I am able to include my personal experiences when
I teach about British culture.
Advice for FCE
Candidates
who will sit the
exam in December
If you have registered to take the FCE Exam
in December, there are only a few weeks
left to prepare for it, so you should intensify
your practice towards the exam now. The
BRITÁNICO offers the best alternatives to do
it:
•The SAC of your centre has a variety of
FCE Past Papers, CDs, CD-ROMs, graded
readers, magazines, etc. If you finish AD6
in October or November, don’t worry
because you have free use of the SAC until
the FCE exam in December. This wonderful
opportunity is only available to those
BRITÁNICO students who have already
registered for the December exam.
•The First Certificate Exam Practice Course
consists of timed exam practice of all the
papers with the December 2008 exam
specifications. Ask for more information
at the reception desk of your centre.

800th anniversary of Cambridge University

20 years ago, when we started administering its exams. Cambridge ESOL offers
the world’s leading range of certificates for learners and teachers of English taken by over 3 million people in 130 countries. The BRITÁNICO is the largest
authorised centre to run examinations for Cambridge University in Peru.

“Learning beyond the
classroom”...

It’s a well known fact that good things happen to students who
read in English. They not only become better readers and writers,
but they also improve their listening and speaking abilities.
With that in mind, groups of External Clients students were
encouraged to select a book from a variety of reading material
displayed in the BRITÁNICO’s SAC, and were asked to hand in a
Reading report about it.
Needless to say, the objective was to go even further, since once
everyone had finished with the writing, they were also asked
to give an oral report on their reading stories so as to have the
whole class involved in asking questions and participating.
Congratulations to all these students who made time to do a very
good job and most importantly who have benefited immeasurably
from these activities.

Filled with great enthusiasm, the students of Juniors 12 finished their cycle by
making up boards of their favourite Sign of the Zodiac, not only putting into
practice everything they’ve learnt in class, but also enjoying making predictions
to each other as they were real fortune tellers for a day.

Research shows that acquisition occurs
when you understand messages in
the target language. Additionally,
you need opportunities to use it, that
is, an atmosphere in which meaning
is negotiated, using the structures
communicatively and meaningfully.
Obviously, you will not negotiate
meaning if you do not speak, therefore
your
teachers
devote
significant
amounts of class time to communicative
activities. So make the most of it and
take advantage of every opportunity for
such interaction.

A great amount
of research has
been applied to
the question of
whether or not a
formal focus on
grammar should
be integrated into our lessons, yet the
idea that we first learn a structure and
then acquire it through practice has
been widespread for decades.
When we memorize grammar rules, we
are functioning out of the conscious
side of our brain. However, when we
communicate, we function out of the
subconscious side of it. This perfectly
explains why the amount of English
you know is larger than the amount of
language you use; or why some of your
answers are supported by a “it doesn’t
sound right”.

Celebrating Children’s day in Peru, our students of PK5 and J4 put their creativity, art skills and English knowledge together to
make posters (PK5) and bookmarks (J4) based on Children’s rights. Not only did they have lots of fun while colouring, cutting and
designing their works but they also found it a great opportunity to relate the English language and their communicative skills to
this important aspect of their lives. It was a fulfilling experience for all of us. Thanks to the BRITÁNICO once again! And Happy
Children’s Day!

Registering for a Fan Club

After thinking what the best Project for my Basic 1 was, I
finally came up with the idea of representing a real situation
in which students could apply what we had learned. Although
they started classes for the very first time about 12 days ago,
I was sure that they were capable of dealing with such a
challenge.
Es por ello que organizamos el concurso “THE SPRINGTIME
OF YOUR LIFE” en el que además por el titulo los alumnos
no solo participarían decorando y comentando acerca de
la primavera como estación, sino que además podrían
mencionar sus vivencias como alumnos jóvenes.
For this project students had to set up a fan club, which they
did by bringing posters with information about their favourite
artists and extra material in order to make the task more
realistic. As for the activity itself, they included many dialogues
while pretending to be secretaries and future members of the
club.
En esta oportunidad el salón ganador fue el B01 de las 7.40
de la profesora Liz López. Los estudiantes disfrutaron de
un Happy Hour en la cafetería de nuestro centro. Hay que
mencionar también al B07 de las 2.30 de la profesora Ana
Maria Landa quienes obtuvieron el segundo lugar.
The most amazing thing is that they were conscious of how
this would help them, not only to reinforce their knowledge,
but also to improve their speaking abilities, writing and
memory. And of course they had the opportunity to lose
shyness and have a lot of fun while learning. Well done, class!

Great Expectations Contest
• Monterrico Centre
Last September, our students of the Advanced Phase were
invited to participate in a contest based on Dickens’s
novel, “Great Expectations”. This competition tested
students’ knowledge of the story and its characters as well
as their creativity to answer some of the questions. Many
thanks to all the students who took part in this activity
and to their teachers. We would also like to thank Mr.
Renzo Chavez, who was in charge of the contest, and Mr.
Gustavo Sanchez Piérola, for visiting us that day.

Tiempo Libre
• Elvira Guzmán, Encargada de Actividades Extracurriculares
Este mes fue toda una novedad el taller de pintura artística,
en el que valiéndose de una técnica artesanal los estudiantes
del centro de San Borja lograron pintar un cuadro floral con
pinceladas certeras, plenas de color, que los sorprendió por los
resultados obtenidos. Continuando con las visitas, llegamos
a Surco, y con gran acogida los alumnos trabajaron con
dedicación y esmero un bello fanal o pantalla de estilo rústico
que seguramente iluminará un rincón especial de su hogar. La
práctica de la bisutería siempre convoca la asistencia de los
alumnos y una vez más fue así; esta vez en Camacho, donde
con gran habilidad confeccionaron delicados juegos de collar
y aretes así como modernas chaquiras hechas a base de piedras
naturales. También estuvimos en el centro de Pueblo Libre,
donde los participantes aprendieron una
nueva técnica que se expuso en el último
Festival de Manualidades en Lima, y a
base de retazos de tela lograron formar
y decorar un cuadro con la imagen de
Pucca, personaje que viene ganando
adeptos. Y en Los Jardines, nuestros
alumnos tuvieron la ocasión de
engreír su paladar participando en la
preparación y degustación de un rico
pie de guanábana.

Es así que una de mis
principales preocupaciones al iniciar este nuevo centro fue la
de mantener un clima laboral positivo, promoviendo aspectos
como comunicación, confianza, escucha y una política de puertas
abiertas que logre que cada persona se sienta reconocida,
valorada y feliz de pertenecer a esta organización.
No puedo sentir más que orgullo y agradecimiento por cada
persona que labora en Pueblo Libre, y desde aquí queremos
aportar con lo más importante para un ser humano, que es
trascender. Con el trabajo que cada colaborador realiza buscamos
dejar una huella, contribuyendo con el desarrollo de nuestros
alumnos, dando a su vez un significado a lo que hacemos día a
día.

Starting a new branch

When both of us were told we
were assigned to Pueblo Libre,
it was indeed a lovely surprise
because it not only meant
working with Patricia Perez
once again, but also facing
the challenge of starting the
organisation of a whole new
branch.
The first day in the branch was really exciting; we received
all the staff and started to work very hard looking forward
to the first day of classes. Today, we feel a great satisfaction
realising that Pueblo Libre has achieved so much in such a
short time, becoming one of the Centres with a very high level
of acceptance among our students.
We are definitely proud to have contributed to the success of
starting this new branch and to have shared lots of experiences
which have helped us become better human beings.
We would like to thank each and every one who contributed
to our success and development and especially for your
support and commitment to us.
Infants in action

En Pueblo libre nos entusiasma realizar actividades para
nuestros alumnos, y es así que en el mes de abril decidimos
realizar una actividad alusiva a la festividad de Pascua de
Resurrección con nuestros alumnos de Infants.
Ellos prepararon huevos de Pascua con colores brillantes y
de diferentes diseños, y luego de manera muy entusiasta
los intercambiaron con sus compañeros. A través de esta
actividad los niños descubrieron la importancia de dar y
recibir, a la vez que ponían en práctica el idioma inglés.
¡Agradecemos a todos los papis por el apoyo recibido y a
nuestros alumnos por su entusiasta participación!
Clima y cultura en Pueblo
Libre
El 26 de setiembre cumplimos nuestro primer año de trabajo,
en el que hemos obtenido muchos logros y nos hemos
consolidado como un excelente equipo de trabajo. Por ello,
decidimos celebrar nuestro cumpleaños y realizamos una
fiesta temática denominada Black & White.
Aquí les mostramos una foto de nuestro evento. Agradecemos
a todos por su alegría y cariño, lo cual nos convierte en ¡una
gran familia!

Conscientes de que para ser competitivos y exitosos

de integración.

Peru and the UK:
for you, for us, for the
world…!!!

In Pueblo Libre, the vast majority of our students have been involved in
diverse kind of activities which aimed to promote English and Peruvian
cultures. Take my F-11 students as an example; they prepared the Full
English Breakfast, Yorkshire Pudding and the very well-known Fish and
Chips. They not only showed how significant English culture is, but also
realised that English is not just a language but a beneficial way to know
more about that country.
Moreover, in July, all our staff caught our students’ eyes with a memorable
exhibition about traditions and customs in Peru and the UK. They could
appreciate the most important places to visit in the UK, play games
about famous English people, and even try typical English drinks. It was
a delightful moment to share.
All in all, our main goal is to keep promoting English culture, and the best
way to do this is bearing in mind that the English language is a fruitful
and meaningful way to achieve it.

When I first walked into the building of my
Centre, I was filled with emotions: curiosity,
excitement and joy. It was indeed both an adventure and a challenge
starting off in a new centre with top notch staff, the newest
infrastructure and all the teaching technology we could ever need.
It was right after our first meeting that I could see we were going to
make a difference as a centre. Therefore I was firmly determined to
do my best to be an active part of this team.
So far, it’s been a successful year and when I look back in time, I
can’t recall anything but fond memories of my students, colleagues,
deputies and Head of Centre. All those monthly activities, not only
for students but also for us teachers who were challenged to make
presentations which were then shared with students who had a
great time learning.
Después de un año de iniciar nuestras actividades, sentimos
que hemos logrado consolidarnos como un verdadero
equipo de trabajo. Hemos aprendido a analizarnos y a
conocernos más como individuos, para poder así ofrecer a
nuestros clientes lo mejor de cada uno de nosotros. Cada
día es una experiencia, y cada experiencia nos permite
aprender, reconocer y valorar lo que somos y lo que tenemos
para compartir.
Estamos dispuestos a mejorar continuamente con el
propósito de alcanzar las metas propuestas, lograr nuestros
objetivos y representar orgullosamente a nuestra institución.
I can’t describe how grateful I am to the BRITÁNICO Pueblo Libre for
giving me the opportunity to learn day by day and for letting me be
a member of this big family.

Ha transcurrido un año desde que me
acerqué por primera vez al nuevo edificio
del BRITÁNICO de Pueblo Libre. Lo hice con
cierto temor, pues el curso de inglés en el colegio era el que menos
me gustaba.
Durante todo este año de estudios, puedo afirmar que estoy
“creciendo” en el BRITÁNICO, porque se abre para mí un mundo de
posibilidades en lo profesional y en lo cotidiano, como entender la
música que me gusta escuchar, comprender las películas que veo o
quizás desenvolverme mejor en el exterior.

• Personal de apoyo Argos y Ssays de Pueblo Libre
Nosotros, colaboradores Argos y Ssays, somos también
parte de la familia del BRITÁNICO. Sentimos mucho orgullo
y satisfacción porque trabajamos para una institución que
nos reconoce como parte de ella y nos ayuda a crecer
como personas y profesionales en las áreas de servicio que
brindamos, como son limpieza y seguridad.
Queremos agradecer a nuestra jefa de centro, subjefas,
personal administrativo y jefe de Seguridad por la
constante capacitación, que hace que todos trabajemos
conjuntamente en el progreso del BRITÁNICO.
Después de un año de asistir a mis clases de inglés de manera
continua, puedo afirmar que en el BRITÁNICO la enseñanza es
pedagógica, los libros me parecen didácticos y gusto mucho de las
obras que estrenan en el Teatro Británico, en el cual tengo beneficios
como alumna.
Todavía tengo un largo camino que recorrer, pero me siento satisfecha
de cuánto he “crecido” hasta ahora en el BRITÁNICO.
