Today, March 15, we honor Redemptorist St. Clement Hofbauer, we Redemptorists consider St. Clement to be our second founder, as he spread our congregation across the Alps and from there, throughout the world. He has been given the title Apostle and Patron to Vienna. Second, on Tuesday this week, March 17th, we honor St. Patrick, Apostle and Patron of Ireland. Lastly, we honor St. Joseph. Sometimes so much emphasis and celebration is placed on St. Patrick, that it is easy forget that just 2 days later, March 19, we honor St. Joseph. Scripture has little to say about St. Joseph. It does not record even one word spoken by St. Joseph. Even without words, he shows the depth of his faith, his greatness, through his actions and his obedience to the word of God. He was chosen by the eternal Father as the trustworthy guardian and protector of his greatest treasures, namely, his divine Son and Mary, Joseph’s wife. St. Joseph is a great role model in the universal church for all Christians, especially husbands, fathers and workers. He is known as a “just (righteous) man” because he totally lived by his faith. God entrusted Jesus and Mary to Joseph’s care. Joseph was the head of the Holy Family. He was the foster father of Jesus and carried out his duties as a father and husband and protector of the Holy Family according to his religious beliefs. Joseph was obedient to all of God’s requests and followed them exactly as he was told by the angels in order to protect his family. This is how we know who Joseph was, not because of what he said that he would do, but what he did to protect his family and his obedience to God’s word. Devotions to St. Joseph have grown gradually in the early years of the church. In the 16th century, St. Teresa of Avila became Joseph’s greatest champion. St. Teresa’s devotion to St. Joseph increased the interest in St. Joseph’s life. Pope Pius IX, himself devoted to St. Joseph, in 1871 declared St. Joseph to be the Patron of the Universal Church. His feast day for the entire church was established as March 19. Pope Pius XII added another feast day for St. Joseph, “St. Joseph the Worker” in 1955. Pope John XXIII added Joseph’s name into the Roman Canon of the Mass in the early 1960’s. Pope John Paul II in his 1989 encyclical Redemptoris Custos placed St. Joseph squarely in the plan of redemption. And lastly, in the first decree of a liturgical nature of this pontificate, Pope Francis has decided that name of St. Joseph should be added to the Eucharistic Prayers in the new Roman Missal, after the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Italy has many saints that are celebrated during the entire year, especially in the south. Sicily’s most important saint is San Giuseppe (St. Joseph). Many activities are scheduled, including the unique one called the St. Joseph’s Table. This tradition is based on a story of a time when there was a severe drought in Sicily. No rain fell for an extended period of time, no crops would grow, and countless people died of famine. The people prayed to God for rain, and they also prayed to St. Joseph to intercede with God on their behalf. They promised that if God caused it to rain, they would have a special feast honoring God and St. Joseph. Their prayers were answered, and the famine came to an end. In gratitude, the people promised to make an annual offering of their most precious possession, food, in St. Joseph’s honor. The tables which are set to honor St. Joseph are filled with beautiful and elaborate foods, including meatless dishes, such as stuffed artichokes, cakes, pasta and fish, as well as breads in various shapes, cookies, pastries, cakes and other delicacies. The tradition of the bread that is blessed at the St. Joseph’s table is kept in the home, so that the family will never starve. There are many saints in the history of the Catholic Church that have lived exemplary lives, lives that set examples for each one of us in our own lives. Saints Clement, Patrick and Joseph are three exemplary ones. St. Clement, St. Patrick and St. Joseph – Pray for us! God Bless Us All Fr. Tizio Email: [email protected] Pastor’s Pun: Why is the letter E like the next world? Because it is the end of time and the beginning of eternity. WOMEN’S RETREAT Shortly after I converted 4 years ago, I saw the Dominican Retreat notice and decided to go, even though I knew almost no one. I hoped to meet people like me who were trying to get closer to God. I was surprised to bond so easily considering it’s mostly silent but our talking times were full of sharing and laughter. I was also surprised to be encouraged to be a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. As a result, I volunteered for both when I returned – just one of the many pluses of the weekend Retreat. The cafeteria offered the students international menu items, such as Spring Rolls, Fried Rice and Fortune cookies which represented Asian Day. It was a wonderful celebration of languages foreign to us. Campaign Corner We have shared with you the latest developments in the early learning center and team house projects. An opportunity has arisen that, if it comes to fruition, would allow the expansion of our high school programs to include more offerings in the arts and a larger student body, as well as potential meeting space for parish groups. As you may have read in the local media, the City of Annapolis is accepting bids for the property fondly known as the Rec Center (9 St. Mary’s Street). Many of us grew up attending art or dance class there, playing sports in its upstairs gym, or attending meetings there. It’s easy to see how this space would help us achieve so many of our parish and school goals! We ask for your prayerful support of this effort.
