EL MUNDIAL SALE AL MUNDO
Los preparativos para el próximo Mundial de hockey
femenino Rosario 2010 avanzan, y toda una ciudad se prepara
para recibir este evento internacional. La consigna es que este
torneo supere todo lo conocido, sea una verdadera fiesta del
deporte y deje un recuerdo imborrable entre los visitantes de
distintos lugares del mundo que se darán cita en Rosario, en la
Republica Argentina.
La Confederación Argentina de Hockey, la Municipalidad
de Rosario y la empresa Mariatti y Asociados están uniendo sus
esfuerzos para concretar todo lo proyectado.
Los visitantes que lleguen a la Argentina pueden tener la certeza
de que serán recibidos de la mejor manera: el transporte planificado
exclusivamente para los visitantes extranjeros, la hoteleria acorde
con exigencias internacionales, todos los servicios a disposición, y
quizás lo mas importante es que habrá una formidable estructura
de personas que aman al hockey y que acompañarán a las
delegaciones deportivas y al publico en general.

multitud que acompañará a Las Leonas.
Argentina se prepara, 12 000 personas tendrán el privilegio de

EMBRACING THE WORLD CUP
Things are getting ready for the next Women’s Hockey World
Cup, Rosario 2010, and a whole city prepares for this international
event. The goal is for this tournament to outmatch any other ever,
to be a real celebration of the sport, and to leave memories that will
last forever in the minds of all the people from around the world
who will visit the city of Rosario, in Argentina.
The Confederación Argentina de Hockey (Argentinean Hockey
Federation), Rosario’s City Hall and the local company Mariatti y
Asociados are making a joint effort to see this through.
All visitors that arrive in Argentina will have the best
welcome we can provide: transportation services especially
planned for tourists, international quality hotels with firstclass services, and, most importantly, a massive organization of
people who love hockey and who will be there for the sports
delegations and for the public in general.
When we say «Welcome to Argentina», it’s not just protocol.
We are actually opening the gates of our country for all those
who want to enjoy the best hockey in the world; those who want
to visit a beautiful, flourishing city, where the passion for sports
will ensure that all teams have their own followers, besides the

En un trabajo conjunto entre el sector público y el privado, la Municipalidad de Rosario y Los Pasos,
Barrios del Jockey, ingresan en la etapa nodal de los trabajos de construcción de la base para la
superficie sintética de última generación con la que contará el futuro estadio mundialista.

key stage in the construction of the foundation for the state-of-the-art artificial playing surface that will be added to
the future World Cup home stadium.
a obra se emplaza en el emprendimiento urbanístico Los Pasos, y se vincula con el Country del Jockey Club a través de un puente peatonal y vehicular
de reciente construcción. El puente desemboca directamente
junto a la cancha de sintético existente en el Jockey Club, que
pasaría funcionar como Cancha nº 2 en el Mundial.
En esta primera etapa, los desarrolladores deben terminar
la base para que luego se coloque la alfombra de césped sintético. La cancha habrá alcanzado aproximadamente un 50%
por ciento a mediados de mayo. El riego, elemento fundamental teniendo en cuenta que la superficie de juego es de
las denominadas «de agua», comienza en estos días la fase de
implementación, y se estima que entre los meses de junio y
julio comenzará a funcionar.
Los profesionales a cargo del proyecto subrayan además
las obras de desagües pluviales con que contará el complejo,
las cuales si bien estaban planeadas para más adelante en el
proyecto original, la llegada del Mundial las volvió prioridad.
Un tramo de estos trabajos estará listo para la visita de la delegación internacional.
La estructura del estadio es, por supuesto, lo más importante. Está programado con una capacidad para 12 mil
personas y una iluminación de más de mil lux. Junto a esta
estructura se está proyectando -de manera conjunta con la
Municipalidad- un edificio de aproximadamente 1000 metros
cuadrados cubiertos en el que estarán los vestuarios, las salas
de prensa y un mini gimnasio.
DESPUÉS DEL MUNDIAL
De los 3000 m2 cubiertos que estarán afectados al Mundial
de Hockey, 2 mil pertenecen a un equipamiento comunitario que albergará una escuela pública, un Centro de Atención
Primaria, un Centro de Desarrollo Social y un Salón de Usos
Múltiples. Los ambientes funcionales destinados al desarrollo
del certamen entre el 30 de agosto y el 10 de septiembre del
próximo año, quedarán con posterioridad a disposición de las
autoridades para su uso público.

Los Pasos, and is connected to the Jockey Club’s Country
Club by a recently built pedestrian/vehicle bridge. The
bridge leads directly to the Jockey Club’s existent artificial grass field,
which will be Stadium no. 2 during the World Cup.
During this first stage, developers will finish the foundation on
which the artificial playing surface will be installed. Approximately
50% of the work will be completed by mid-May. The watering system will be implemented within a few days, and it is expected to be
operational by June-July.
Specialists in charge of the project also highlight the importance of
the construction of a drainage system, which was planned for the near
future but was turned into a priority by the upcoming World Cup. Part of
the work will be ready when the international delegates arrive.
The structure of the stadium is undoubtedly the main issue. It
will accommodate 12,000 spectators, and the lighting system will be
of over 1,000 lux. The full project, carried out as a joint effort with
Rosario’s City Hall, includes also a building beside the stadium with
an approximate area of 1,000 square meters of covered space, which
will comprise locker rooms, press boxes and a small gym.
AFTER THE WORLD CUP
Out of the 3,000 sq. m of covered space which will be used during the World Cup, 2,000 belong to a community service area which
will include a public school, a clinic, a Social Development Center
and a multi-purpose hall. The functional areas in which World Cuprelated events will take place between August 30 and September 10,
2010, will be afterwards handled by the City Hall for public use.

Los Pasos, Barrios del Jockey, es un proyecto urbanístico que prevén completar en siete años. Se ubica al
oeste de la ciudad de Rosario, en una zona de poca urbanización. Lo conformarán un total de cuatro barrios
cerrados, de los cuales el primero será Paso del Country. En los próximos años le seguirán Paso del Golf, Paso
del Puente y Paso del Arroyo, a los que se les suma un
sector de manzanas abiertas y una zona comercial. El
proyecto promete ayudar a desarrollar esta zona de la
ciudad, trayendo energía eléctrica y construyendo un
acueducto, entre otras obras de infraestructura.
El grupo corportativo que lleva adelante Los Pasos
esta encabezado por el empresario rosarino Gustavo
Shanahan.
La participación de Los Pasos en el Mundial de Hockey del año próximo se enmarca en un acuerdo suscripto con la Municipalidad de Rosario. Las obras de infraestructura resultantes, que se destinarán al uso público
luego del evento, serán en gran parte una contribución
de Los Pasos al patrimonio social de Rosario y su zona.
Los Pasos, Barrios del Jockey, is an urban development
project planned to be completed in seven years. It will comprise
four closed neighborhoods, the first of which will be Paso del
Country. After this, in subsequent years, Paso del Golf, Paso
del Puente and Paso del Arroyo will be built, and the neighborhood as a whole will have also an open-space area and
a shopping area. This project will promote the growth of this
area in the west of Rosario; bringing electricity and potable
water supply, among other improvements.
The head of the corporate group that is carrying out project
Los Pasos is Rosario’s businessmam Gustavo Shanahan.
Los Pasos’ involvement in next year’s Hockey World Cup
is the result of an agreement with Rosario’s City Hall. The
infrastructure work that this agreement brings about will be
devoted to public use after the event, and will be a contribution of Los Pasos’ tenants and investors to the Rosario’s social
heritage.

facilities, which will be of public use in the future.

ntre las tareas que le corresponden llevar adelante
a la Municipalidad se encuentran la colocación del
césped sintético –con un costo de 280 mil dólares-,
la construcción de ocho columnas que rodean el estadio principal y los cuatro tableros seccionales.
La transmisión de este evento se hará por televisión digital. «Esta tecnología exige 192 artefactos para una iluminación
total de 2 mil lux, mientras que estadios como el de Rosario
Central cuentan con 800 lux. La mitad deberá estar lista para
agosto de este año y, una vez terminadas las transmisiones, se
espera que la mitad de la instalación sea destinada al Velódromo Municipal», destacó el arquitecto Guillermo Castiglioni,
titular de la Dirección Municipal de Diseño de Vía Pública y
Equipamiento Comunitario. La energía para alimentar el Estadio dependerá de un generador de gran capacidad, prestado
por la Empresa Provincial de la Energía.
Gran parte de la construcción de las estructuras desmontables también estará a cargo del gobierno local: tribunas tubulares, pórtico de ingreso, montaje de carpas, baños públicos
y cabinas de transmisión.
En el edificio lindero al estadio se encontrarán los vestuarios. «Para diseñar estos cuatro espacios se consultó a la Leona Ayelén Stepnik. Cada uno de ellos cuenta con una sala de
masajes, una pileta de hielo y un espacio para la charla técnica. Los vestuarios de los jueces y los consultorios de emergencia y antidoping estarán también en esa edificación.», agregó
Castiglioni.
Del otro lado del inmueble será la Sala de Prensa, que contará con baños propios, diez boxes independientes y una gran
sala de conferencia con capacidad para unas cien personas.
La lista de reparticiones municipales afectadas al Mundial
se completa con las Secretarías de Promoción Social (y su Dirección de Deportes), Planeamiento, Centro Periferia, Obras
Públicas, Servicios Públicos, Gobierno y Secretaría General.

a half of the lighting will go to the Municipal Cycling Track»,
confirms Architect Guillermo Castiglioni, City’s Director of
Outdoors Design and Community Equipment. The electricity
to meet such demand will come from a high capacity generator provided by the Santa Fe Province Power Company.
A good portion of the construction of assembled structures
is also in the hands of the local government: mounted stands,
entry gate, marquees, toilets, and broadcasting booths.
The neighbouring building will contain the changing rooms. «For the design of these four spaces we received valuable advice from Leona Ayelen Stepnik. Each of them includes
a massage parlour, ice tub, and a meeting room. The umpires
changing room and emergency rooms are also within this big
space», Castiglioni added.
On the other side, a media centre will be located, with
private toilets, ten independent boxes, and a big conference
room for over a hundred people.
The rest of City offices involved in the 2010 World Cup
works are: Departments of Social Promotion, Sports, Planning, Suburban Affairs, Public Works, Public Services, Government Affairs, and Secretary General.

ntre el 23 y el 30 de abril pasados se disputaron en el
club Popeye de Salta cinco encuentros entre las selecciones femeninas de hockey de Argentina y EE.UU.
El saldo fue netamente favorable a las locales, que ganaron
4 partidos y empataron el restante.
Pero, fundamentalmente, para Las Leonas se trató de un
hito de gran importancia debido a que era el debut como director técnico del Chapa Carlos Retegui.
Y aunque el rival puede considerarse un escalón por debajo de las argentinas (2º vs. 9º en el ranking FIH), las norteamericanas acometieron la serie con esfuerzo y profesionalismo,
y por lo tanto los resultados de los partidos resaltan por su
contundencia.
La vivencia integral del evento en la ciudad de Salta fue especial. En un país malacostumbrado a concentrar sus hechos
relevantes en la Capital, ninguna ciudad del interior desper-
dicia la mínima oportunidad de rodear de masivo entusiasmo
a quienes los enorgullecen como compatriotas.
El caso de Las Leonas es muy especial. Su público esencial
son mujeres jóvenes, adolescentes y niñas. Y en cada rincón
del país las transforman en ídolos –amateurs- sin nada que
envidiar a las estrellas millonarias del fútbol o el espectáculo.
Salta no tenía intenciones de ser la excepción, y cada jornada
se repetían por centenares los pedidos de autógrafos y fotografías junto a las Leonas favoritas, o la que pasara cerca.
Entre los concurrentes destacados, estuvo en el segundo
test match el Gobernador de Salta J. M. Urtubey, y en el cuarto
el embajador norteamericano Earl Wayne.
La organización de la semana de competencias fue creativa,
meticulosa, puntual y eficiente. Estuvo a cargo de la Asociación
Salteña de Hockey, presidida por Sandra Isola, junto a la Confederación Argentina de Hockey y al gobierno de la Provincia.

The coverage was managed by the tournament’s Press
Office, headed by journalist Josefina Chávez Díaz, which included all relevant information and data regarding the competition, with world-class quality and proficiency.
rom April 23rd to 30th, the Argentinean and the American hockey teams played five matches at Popeye Baseball Club, Salta, North of Argentina.
The result was 4 victories for the local team and one draw.
The importance of this more than satisfying result resides in
the fact that this was the first series under Carlos Retegui as new
Leona’s coach.
And even though it can be argued that the opponent is in a
lower playing standard than the local team (2nd vs. 9th in the
FIH rankings), the American team worked seriously and hard,
and this confers real value to the outcome.
The experience in Salta was indeed special. In a country which has the bad habit of concentrating all important events in its
Capital city, Buenos Aires, all cities in every province are eager to
take the chance to encourage those who make them proud as
fellow Argentines.
And the case of Las Leonas is very singular. The team’s followers are essentially young women, teenagers and children.
And in every corner of Argentina they are adored as true idols
–though amateurs-, with nothing to envy from any football or
show-business stars, no matter their big incomes. Salta was not
the exception, and during every match, hundreds of autographs
were signed and hundreds of pictures were taken with all Leonas, either celebrity or rookie.
Among the attendees of the second test match was Salta’s
governor J.M. Urtubey, and American ambassador Earl Wayne
attended the fourth match.
The schedule of competitions that took place during that
week was very well planned; it was organized with creativity and
efficiency by the Salta Hockey Association, chaired by Ms. Sandra Isola, together with the Argentinean Hockey Confederation
and the Province of Salta.

Mundial 2010 en distintas ciudades.
El punto de partida fue sobresaliente, cuando en marzo se
realizó la conferencia pública en Rosario.
La ciudad de Salta y su fuerte club Popeye albergaron una
serie de cinco test matches entre Las Leonas y el seleccionado
de Estados Unidos, durante la última semana de abril.
No se trataba de un lugar más entre las provincias argentinas, ya que Salta había sido un serio postulante, durante la
etapa de elección de la sede, para organizar el Mundial 2010.
La sucesión de presentaciones que se proyecta tiene como
objetivo alcanzar cada punto de la vasta geografía argentina
para dar a conocer los avances organizativos del Mundial mes
a mes. Aunque el evento tendrá lugar en una sola ciudad, Rosario, el propósito de de las entidades organizadoras es que
cada argentino, fanáticos o seguidores del hockey, o simples
simpatizantes de Las Leonas en su calidad de selección nacional, sienta el Mundial como propio. Esto tiene especial importancia en los rincones más alejados del país.
En la segunda jornada de la serie salteña, el sábado 25 de
abril, el club anfitrión, Popeye, recibió la mayor concurrencia
de la semana, con el adicional de la presencia del gobernador
Juan Manuel Urtubey y otras autoridades.
Al final del partido, todos los medios salteños y nacionales, además de un buen número de invitados especiales, se
dieron cita en la sala de conferencias para la presentación del
Mundial de Hockey Femenino Rosario 2010.
El panel de la conferencia estuvo conformado por:
Daniel Marcellini, Presidente de la Confederación Argentina de Hockey (CAH); Francisco Palopoli, Secretario Provincial
de Deportes y Recreación de la Provincia de Salta; Rolando
Dal Lago, Director de Deportes de Rosario; Carlos Retegui,
DT de Las Leonas; Ayelen Stepnik, jugadora de Las Leonas y
rosarina; Mariné Russo, jugadora de Las Leonas.
El encuentro fue organizado por Mariatti Medios, agente oficial exclusivo de paquetes turísticos y entradas para el
Mundial, y la Asociación de Hockey de Salta, con el apoyo de
la Oficina de Prensa de la Secretaría de Deportes salteña.
Durante toda esa semana, HOCKEY TIME, La Revista del
Mundial, se dio a conocer y distribuyó entre la familia del hockey salteña y los miles de espectadores. La demanda fue tal
que agotó rápidamente la gran cantidad de ejemplares disponibles.

presentations. The start had been outstanding, back in March
at the Rosario public conference.
The city of Salta, up in the Argentinean northwest Andes, a
tourism place full of traditional colonial and aboriginal culture,
was hosting a series of 5 test matches between Argentina’s Leonas and the USA national team during the last week of April.
The venue was not a minor one, having been itself a serious bidder for the 2010 World Cup.
This series of meetings is intended to reach every spot of
the vast Argentinean geography with news of the World Cup
developments. Even though the event takes place in one single city, the organizers’ purpose is to have every Argentinean
hockey fan feel it as her or his own Cup, particularly in the
farthermost provinces.
On the second day of the series, Saturday 25th, the host
club Popeye received the biggest crowd of the week, with the
additional presence of Salta’s Governor Juan Manuel Urtubey
and other authorities.
At the end of the match, all of Salta’s media and the nationwide hockey press, and a good number of special guests
were at the Conference Room, ready for the Rosario 2010
World Cup presentation.

Cuando comience el torneo de Durban, Georgia Nanscawen tendrá 17 años recién cumplidos. Aún así, deberá entrar
a jugar en alguno de los partidos para que pueda debutar oficialmente en un evento internacional a tan temprana edad, la

tournament starts. Still, she will need to be included in one of the
games to have an official first international this early, with the same

Australia’s coach Frank Murray did not take long to decide and
select her after seeing quick redhead Georgia at a training session in
her hometown Melbourne. And, as a former school teacher, Murray
pointed out he will make sure Georgia keeps up with her school
work while on tour.
The 1990s, with achievements and hockey
stars galore for Australia, are gone. Apparently,
the bet for a new golden era is to trust and
promote new players. In fact, five other new
names will wear the Hockeyroos jersey for
their first time in Durban: Alison Bruce, Emily
Hurtz, Stacia Joseph, Heather Langham and
Danielle Schubach.
Georgia Nanscawen is in high school,
plays as striker for Victoria, and is very likely
to be part of the junior squad for the Boston
World Cup in August.

gran popularidad durante la ocupación inglesa. En ese período, el siglo 19, cuando la expansión británica lograba introducir con éxito el rugby en Oceanía y Sudáfrica, y el fútbol en el
resto del mundo, los indios adoptaron el hockey, al punto de
llegar a ganar seis medallas de oro olímpicas consecutivas, con
24 victorias sucesivas entre 1924 y 1956.
Pero casi ninguno de estos datos tiene validez si se habla
de hockey femenino. Como es el caso de la mayoría de las
actividades públicas en este país, las mujeres suelen estar en
desventaja con respecto a los hombres.
Sin embargo, y probablemente como parte de un proceso
acelerado de crecimiento y modernización en la India, en años
recientes hubo un importante desarrollo del hockey femenino.
En 2007, Chak De! India, una película producida por la copiosa industria fílmica india en la que el equipo nacional de
hockey femenino indio gana Mundial, tuvo un éxito resonante.

Hockey players in India can be counted for millions. It gained
great popularity during the British occupation. At the time the British
expansion was successfully introducing rugby in Oceania and South
Africa, and football in the rest of the world, the Indians welcomed
hockey to the point of winning six straight Olympic gold medals in
24 consecutive victorious matches between 1924 and 1956.
Now, forget a good part of this story if you think of women’s
hockey. As in most public activities in this country, women come well
behind men.
But also, probably as part of an accelerated modernization and
growth in India, the recent years have seen a significant development of women’s hockey.
In 2007, Chak De! India, a Bollywood film portraying the national
women’s team of field hockey winning the World Cup, was a big
success. There are strong opinions that it remarkably helped boost
the sport.
M.K. Kaushik, an Indian hockey legend and former coach of the
men’s team, is currently conducting the Asian country’s ladies.
In January this year, India played 3 friendly matches against Argentina in San Fernando, Buenos Aires, with one loss, one draw, and

¿Qué conoce de Argentina y del hockey argentino?
Estuve en Argentina varias veces: en el 2001, para el
Mundial Juvenil, en el 2005 para los test matches y el año
pasado en Mendoza para el Summer Championship. Tengo
muchas ganas de volver el año próximo para el Mundial.
Luciana Aymar es muy conocida en el ambiente del
hockey en Sudáfrica. Y no sólo de ella, sino de la mayoría
de las jugadoras argentinas, admiramos su estrategia en el
ataque, su actitud y su capacidad de atacar y avanzar en el
campo del adversario.
JUGADORA DESTACADA
¿Cuáles son los objetivos que se ha fijado su equipo a corto y a largo plazo?
MM: Nuestro objetivo principal es, sin duda, escalar
en el ranking mundial (Sudáfrica ocupa el puesto nº 12
según el último informe de la FIH).
De todas maneras, estamos trabajando duro para llegar a la final este torneo Cuatro Naciones en Durban. Va
a ser muy difícil, pero vamos a jugar ante nuestro público,
y esta vez esperamos tener una gran cantidad de simpatizantes que nos alienten.
Y, luego de finalizar 11º sobre 12 equipos en las últimas Olimpíadas, nuestro objetivo para el Mundial del año
próximo será, nuevamente, mejorar nuestro rendimiento
y alcanzar una mejor posición a nivel mundial.
Parece haber una gran distancia entre Sudáfrica y
el resto de los países de África en lo que respecta al
hockey femenino. ¿Esto les resulta una ventaja a ustedes?
Una de las pocas ventajas de esto es que siempre ganamos los campeonatos continentales, y eso nos facilita la
clasificación para los torneos importantes. Es el caso del
Mundial del año próximo.
Pero, por supuesto, para tener una competencia fuerte
que nos ayude a crecer, siempre tenemos que viajar muy
lejos.
Afortunadamente, nuestro principal auspiciante, SPAR
(una cadena de super y minimercados), organiza torneos
y competencias en el extranjero para nuestro equipo, o
bien recibimos a las selecciones internacionales más importantes en nuestro país.
Aún así, no es fácil para nosotros mantener un alto
nivel de competencia, especialmente si se compara con la
agenda de los equipos europeos.
¿Hay muchas sudafricanas jugando en clubes extranjeros?
En este momento hay tres chicas jugando en Inglaterra y dos en Holanda. Tienen una agenda de competencias
muy exigente. Hasta ahora, esto no les ha sido un
obstáculo para asistir a los entrenamientos de
nuestra selección, ya que el cronograma está
pensado para que todas puedan hacerlo.

What goals have your team set for short and
long terms?
MM: We definitely have the number-one goal of
going up in the World rankings (South Africa ranked in 12th position
on the latest FIH report).
But for the coming tournament in Durban, we are working hard
to make it into the final game. It will be very tough, but we’ll be
playing in front of our people. And this time we expect an important
crowd of followers.
And, after finishing in 11th out of 12 in the last Olympics, our
objective for next year’s World Cup will be, again, to improve our
performance and to reach a better position worldwide.
There seems to be a big gap between South Africa and the rest
of the African nations in women’s hockey, is that an advantage?
One of the few advantages of it is that we always win the Continental Championships, and that helps, for example, for an easier
qualification for major tournaments. It should be the case for next
year’s World Cup.
But, of course, in order to get strong competition, which eventually could help us grow, we need to travel a long way.
Fortunately, our main sponsor SPAR (a groceries shops chain)
regularly arranges matches and competitions for us abroad, or else
we host major international teams at home.
Still, it is a disadvantage to keep up, if you compare with the
competitive schedules of, especially, European teams.
Are there many of your teammates playing overseas at club
level?
We have got three girls in England and two in the Netherlands
at the moment. That gives them a tight competitive scheme. So far, it
hasn’t been an obstacle for them to attend our training camps, which
are suitably scheduled for everyone to come.
What is your view of Argentina and of Argentinean hockey?
I was in Argentina a number of times: in 2001 for the Junior
World Cup, in 2005 for test matches, and last year in Mendoza for
a Summer Championship. I am really looking forward to returning
next year for the World Cup.
Of course, Luciana Aymar is very well known in South African
hockey. And not only of her, but of most Argentinean players, we
admire their attacking skills, their attitude and ability to attack and
advance in the opponent’s half of the field.

olfgang Sternberger es por estos días uno de
los fotógrafos más atareados en el hockey internacional. A los 71 años, este odontólogo alemán es también conocido por su amabilidad y vitalidad.
Casado con Ingrid, residen en la ciudad alemana de
Duisburg y tienen dos hijos y cuatro nietos.
Sternberger está doctorado en Odontología, y ejerció
su actividad hasta el fines de 2000.

¿Qué otras profesiones tiene? ¿Alguna vez jugó al
hockey?
La de dentista fue mi única profesión. Nunca jugué al hockey pero hice atletismo en mi juventud.
¿Qué es lo que más valora del hockey femenino, comparándolo con el de hombres?
Especialmente a nivel de clubes, aprecio el modo elegante
en el que juegan, sin tanta agresividad. Además, las mujeres
sociabilizan mejor durante la competencia, en los torneos.
¿Qué momentos recuerda especialmente en las competencias internacionales?
En particular, voy a mencionar tres: el seleccionado alemán de mujeres ganando el Oro en las Olimpíadas de Atenas
en 2004; las Leonas consagrándose campeonas del mundo en
Perth, Australia, en 2002; y el Champions Trophy de Macau
en el mismo año, que se jugó bajo terribles condiciones climáticas.
¿Tiene pensado estar en el Mundial de Argentina para
2010?
Fue una linda sorpresa enterarme de que Rosario sería la
sede del Mundial luego de la cancelación de Buenos Aires. El
Champions Trophy del 2004 fue verdaderamente genial.
Con mi esposa, que me acompaña a todos los eventos, ansiamos regresar a Rosario y quizás viajar por todo el país. Quién

trato de sus habitantes y el idioma, que disfruto mucho aunque apenas lo manejo.
Siendo alemán, un país de larga tradición en tecnología fotográfica, ¿cuáles son los mejores equipos para la
cobertura gráfica del hockey?
Tal cual lo venimos experimentando en todas las disciplinas deportivas con mucha acción, los productos japoneses
son los mejores desde hace años. Son permanentemente innovadores y, por lo tanto, tienen un gran número de piezas a
precios razonables.

erman dentist Wolfgang Sternberger, 71, is now a
days one of the busiest photographers in hockey. He
is also well known for his natural friendliness.
Married to Ingrid, they live in Duisburg, Germany, and
have a son and a daughter, and four grandchildren.
Sternberger has a Doctorate in Dentistry, and retired
from practice in 2000.
Since then, Wolfgang has travelled the World with his
picture coverage of field hockey.
His works can be seen on a good number of media, including the FIH’s website.
An interview with HOCKEY TIME.
HT: How many hockey games have you approximately
been to as a photographer?
WS: I have attended approximately 2000 hockey matches
as a photographer since 1984. First, it was only few shots at
my home club and in the neighbourhood. In 1985 I made my
first international match.
But I am a full time photographer in life. With family pictures, first of all, and I do athletics’ photography from time to
time as well.
Is it only international hockey, or also at club level?
It is most frequently at club level. Last Easter, for example,
I followed as a photographer the German Club Rot-Weiss, of
Cologne, at the Europe Women’s Cup Winners Cup in Manchester, England. Beggining of June, I will be at Den Bosch,
Netherlands, for Eurohockey Club Champions, along with
the Berliner Hockey Club.
What other profession do you have, have you ever
played hockey?
Dentistry was my only profession.
I have never played hockey. But I was into Athletics in my youth.
What do you most value of women’s hockey, compared to men’s?
Especially at club level, I appreciate the way of playing
hockey with elegance and not so much aggressiveness in
women’s hockey; and that women can socialize better during
competitions (matches or tournaments).
What moments in women’s hockey do you remember
as most impressive?
My most impressive sports moments in women’s hockey were: ... the German women’s team winning gold in the

Olympic Games of Athens, in 2004; the win of the gold medal
by Leonas in the 2002 World Cup in Perth; and the Champions Trophy in Macau 2002, which was played under terrible
weather conditions.
Are you looking forward to coming to Argentina in 2010?
I was very surprised but pleased to hear from Rosario as
venue for the World Cup after Buenos Aires’ cancellation. The
2004 Champions Trophy down there was truly great.
My wife and I -she comes with me to all events- are looking forward to coming back to Rosario and perhaps travel
around the country as well. Who knows?, that might be our
2010 holiday trip!
I have good memories of Argentina, especially because of
the winning way of the Argentinian people, and the language,
which I enjoy a lot even though I can barely use it.
Being a German, a country with a long tradition in
photography technology, what is the best equipment to
work with in hockey coverage?
Like in the entire scenario of action sports,
the Japanese camera production is top-ranking since many years because of continuous
innovations and, therefore, high number of
pieces at acceptable prices.

GENERAL MEETING OF ARGENTINA HOCKEY CONFEDERATION
El domingo 24 de mayo, a las 10:30, tiene lugar en la ciudad
de Córdoba la Asamblea General Ordinaria de la Confederación Argentina de Hockey sobre Césped y Pista. La sede es el
Córdoba Athletic Club. Junto con la consideración de Memoria y Estados contables, y el tratamiento del presupuesto, el
tema más destacado en la reunión es la elección de Presidente
y Vicepresidente por los próximos cuatro años, al terminarse
los mandatos del Doctor Sergio Daniel Marcellini y de Jorge
Mañez, respectivamente. Otros puestos para los que se elegirá
sucesor son el de Secretario, Tesorero y vocales.
Se presenta una sola lista de candidatos, denominada Lista Unidad.
It takes place in Córdoba, on May 24th, at the Córdoba Athletic
Club. The main issues of the meeting will be the Accounting Balance, Projected Budget, and the election of the new President and
Vice President, as Mr Daniel Marcellini’s 4 year’s presidency comes

i hay algo que no le sobra a Carlos Retegui es tiempo.
Tiempo −y entrenamientos y amistosos y torneos− es
lo que necesita el entrenador de Las Leonas para ir
definiendo el plantel de 18 jugadoras que buscará en Rosario,
el año próximo, el segundo título en la historia del seleccionado
argentino de hockey sobre césped.
La gestión de Retegui al frente del equipo arrancó con los
cinco amistosos en Salta frente a Estados Unidos, siguió con
dos partidos frente a Italia en Buenos Aires y continuará, en lo
inmediato, con un Torneo Cuatro Naciones en Durban.
Todos estos encuentros le servirán al entrenador, fundamentalmente, para ir encontrando las 24-25 jugadoras que
encararán el tramo final hacia Rosario 2010. Es que hoy Las
Leonas tienen un plantel de 34 chicas y la idea es achicarlo en
los próximos meses para, después del Trofeo de Campeones
que se jugará en Sydney del 11 al 19 de julio, entrenar con
aquel número. O con uno muy parecido.
Una meta del director técnico es lograr que el seleccionado entienda su idea de un hockey súper dinámico y moderno,
con una defensa zonal primero e individual después y con una
constante rotación en las volantes y las delanteras. En definitiva, pretende alcanzar una Argentina incómoda para cualquier
adversario y al que «nadie quiera enfrentar», según sus propias
palabras.
Otro objetivo es darles minutos en cancha a quienes son
nuevas en el equipo y apuntan como para tomar un importante protagonismo en las próximas convocatorias junto al grupo
de 14 jugadoras que ya tienen una amplia experiencia internacional y alcanzaron un nivel de jerarquía importante (Aymar,
por supuesto, es el caso emblemático) que les permite, salvo
algún factor excepcional, imaginarse en el Estadio mundialista
rosarino con la camiseta celeste y blanca.
Entre esas caras de la renovación vale destacar a Daniela
Sruoga (es una de las preferidas de Retegui y hoy es la volante
por izquierda titular), Delfina Merino, Carla Dupuy, Macarena
Abente, Josefina Sruoga y Ayelen Stepnik. El caso de la rosarina es diferente porque a los 33 años volvió al equipo después
de tres temporadas y, por ahora, respondió a las expectativas.
Falta poco menos de 15 meses para el Mundial. Pero Las
Leonas ya lo viven. Para soñar a lo grande.

–as well as coaching, and friendly matches, and tournaments- is what Las Leonas’ coach needs to decide
who will be part of the team of 18 players which will go for the
second title in the history of the Argentinean Women’s Field
Hockey Team next year in Rosario.
Retegui’s coaching work started off with the five friendly
matches in Salta against the United States, and continued with
two matches against Italy in Buenos Aires; the next move is the
Spar Cup, in Durban.
These matches will be very useful to the coach, essentially
because they will let him decide who will be among the 24,
25 players who will eventually make it for Rosario 2010. Right
now, the training camp holds 34 players, and the plan is to narrow down this number within the next few months, in order to
start training for the World Cup with 25 players, or nearly, after
next Champions Trophy in July, in Sydney.
One of Retegui’s goals is to have the team understand his
concept of a highly dynamic and modern hockey, with a defense that should be in zone first, and only then individual;
with wingers and forwards constantly rotating in the field. To
sum things up, he wants the Argentinean team to be a rough
adversary, one which «nobody wants to play against», in his
own words.
Another one of his goals is to try new players who have
good potential for the next call to assemble with the group of
14 players who already have ample international experience
and have reached a very high level of proficiency (Aymar being,
of course, the major representative of this).
Among the new faces are Daniela Sruoga (one of his favorites and right now first choice left winger), Delfina Merino,
Carla Dupuy, Macarena Abente, Josefina Sruoga and Rosario’s
Ayelen Stepnik. This is a special case, since she rejoined the
team at 33, after a three-season absence, and for now she’s met
the coach’s expectations.
The World Cup is less than 15 months away, but Las Leonas
are already living it. Dreaming of victory.
