ABSTRACT The remote sensing-based virtual journey of the geosites of Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaër region and its Middle Atlas area is a means of raising awareness and promoting the natural landscape resources of Morocco. The present work aims to show that spatial imaging possesses an excellent potential for the interpretation of the geological and geomorphological characteristics of the geosites. In this context the exhaustive knowledge of these environments, allowed by the remote sensing, is more necessary than ever in order to perform the relevant periodic assessments. This implies having highresolution maps in order to develop a complete database of every geomorphosite of the region. INTRODUCTION The Morocco is known by the richness and the variety of geological landscapes. These sites are the result of 3 billion years of geological past. Different magmatic, sedimentary, tectonic, metamorphic and climatic processes have contributed, each in its own way, or by their interaction to shape extremely diverse geological and geomorphological sites. These geosites deserve a detailed scientific, socio-economic, environmental and cultural study in order to value them for the benefit of the general public and especially for the non-specialist visitors. The objective of our work is to create some itineraries through Central Morocco and the Tabular middle Atlas with the aim to highlight the geological identity and promote geotourism in this region. The virtual journey, allowed by the remote sensing, through the geosites of central Morocco and its middle Atlas extension is a means of raising awareness and promoting the natural landscape resources of Morocco. Figure 1. (A): RGB_432.JPG: composite image in false color; (B): RGB_321.JPG: composite image in true color. In addition, these geosites are incorporated into the development of the educational component of ecotourism, which has as inspiration the sustainable development. In the present work, we are going to show XV Congreso de la Asociación Española de Teledetección INTA, Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid). 22-24 octubre, 2013 that the spatial imaging can bring us as close as possible to these geomorphological units and that it possesses an excellent potential for the interpretation of the geological and geomorphologic characteristics. Their development will allow, thus, a better understanding of the dynamics of the natural cicles and will favour decision-making to face the challenges of environmental management. In this context an exhaustive knowledge of geologic environments, as well as their monitoring through remote sensing, is more necessary than ever in order to perform the relevant periodic assessments. 3.1.2. The mushroom rock (route ain leuh -douar caid amgor) In our case, the genesis of mushroom forms is attributed to the karst corrosion and the gelifraction which acted differently at the base of the limestone rocks for the presence of carbonates stony levels. 2. METHODOLOGY This work aims to test the use of satellite imagery for mapping and inventory of geosites in the central plateau and the Middle Atlas area, with the prospect of a regular monitoring of the ground, in addition to the aerial data. This has been carried out by the photo-interpretation of a Landsat image (date of image: 4 April 2006; Sensor: Landsat-7, ETM+) which, with 8321 x 7381 pixels and a pixel size of 30 x 30 m, covers a large surface of the order of 55275 km². This image provides suitable information for the mapping and localization of the different geosites identified on the ground and serves as a base to elaborate useful maps to support the field phase which primarily interested the scientific community in order to develop a geotouristic itinerary to promote scientific tourism in a sustainable development perspective. Figure 3. Mushrooms of rock along the road Ain Leuh - Douar Caid Amgorest. 3.1.3. The volcanic landscapes The Plateau of Azrou is formed by large effusions of plio-Quaternary basalts from several of emission centres which overcome the tabular of Ifrane. From the geomorphological point of view (Martin, 1981; De Waele, Di Gregorio et al., 2009) one can recognize big or small simple volcanic cones (Jebel Habri, Jebel Hebri...), the complex volcanoes (Tit Ouagmar, Chedifat-Tit Ouagma...), the explosion craters (Mischliffen, Bou Ibalrhatene), the lava tunnels (Trou de Ifri-Ouska), extensive lava flows. A B C D 3. RESULTS The approach followed in this study allowed us to map the main targeted geosites, with the aim to produce maps in which these sites are presented together with a tourist route to visit them. 3.1. Landscapes of the Ifrane-Azrou 3.1.1. The landscape of Ito The landscape of Ito is located at the edge of the tabular of Ifrane in the Middle Atlas, on the road MeknesMidelt between El Hajeb and Azrou. It is a panoramic immensity of the large surface of erosion of the former exhumation having started in Permo-Trias until to the present. Figure 2. Landscape of Ito. Figure 4. Panoramic view of Jbel Habri (A), Jbel Hebri (B), crater of Michliffen (C) and lake Afennourir (D). 3.1.4. Examples of sources and karst aquifer The Middle Atlas is characterized by the presence of carbonate series dating of the lower Jurassic, forming a relatively well watered mountain. The Cracking and dissolution of these carbonate rocks gives rise to karst reservoirs which are infiltrated by meteoric water, supplying a variety of sources. The largest and best known are the sources of the Oum-er-Rbiaâ. It is about cliffs formed of Liassic limestone and dolomites based on clays and Triassic basalts, the whole is cut by faults NE-SW. XV Congreso de la Asociación Española de Teledetección INTA, Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid). 22-24 octubre, 2013 We summarize in the following figure, all the geomorphosites and important geosites in the landscape of the valley Khenifra. Figure 5. The waterfalls of Sources of Oum-er-Rbia one of the main sites of interest geoturistic of Morocco. The following figure shows the position of all geosites and geomorphosites in the landscape of Ifrane-Azrou. Figure 6. The landscape of the valley of Khenifra In the region, there are important geosites which deserve a particular attention. Among them we cite the mining geosite of Bou Ouzzal. It's located at the eastern end of hercynian Massif Central at approximately 4 km south of Khenifra. This is one of the largest deposits barytic associated with the iron in the Morocco. This site was operated in the past and currently is abandoned without rehabilitation nor restoration of the landscape. Figure 9. The central plateau 3.3.1. The landscape of granitic massif of the Ment The granitic massif of Ment and its enclosing rocks offer an interesting and varied landscape. The characteristic of this geosite is materialized by the aplanation surface and by the superposition of the both magmatic activities: granite of -279 Ma in which the volcanic lavas of tholeiitic basalt are injected in the form of cones scattered in the granitic landscape. Figure 10. Pinnacle of Ment. 3.3.2. The landscape of recent volcanism in the Central Plateau Figure 7. The mining geosite of Bou Ouzzal. Figure 8. Barytic vein. It is generally about small cones from 500 to 600 meters in diameter most often, trained by the red or grey scorias essentially, the volcanic bombs and the lapillis. Their craters are often breached either towards the Northwest, or towards the Southeast, and have emitted massive lava flows on some kilometers in length (1 in 3 km) and around thirty meters in thickness at most. Landscape of the plateau of Oulmes Source of Oulmes: this is one of the most important sources of mineral water and thermomineral recognized in all the plateau of Oulmes (Plio - Quaternary), with a very varied mineralization (etain and tungsten associated to the granitic domes, sulphides peribatholitic and kaolin). Valley of the Oued Bou Regreg: it is a deep and wild valley, embanked and superimposed on the old surface of peneplanation modeled on the granite of Oulmes and the metamorphic rocks injected by places by volcanic devices (Plio-Quaternary). The satellite image below shows all geosites and geomorphosites in the central plateau. Figure 15. Position of the geosites and the geomorphosites in the landscape of the central plateau. CONCLUSION The objective of the use of remote sensing in this approach in the fields of tourism and natural heritage (and in particular for the case of geomorphosites) is to provide these sectors with new tools which can contribute to make the general public sensitive about the importance and richness of these sites. The maps and materials described here have the purpose to guide the tourist in the exploration of this region of long shelved mountains, which is of great value from many points of view (biodiversity, fresh water, ores, heritage…) and deserves to be acknowledged and protected. 5.
