Third Sunday of Lent As a Lenten reflection, I would like to share
CHRIST THE GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
SPRING, TEXAS
Third Sunday of Lent
As a Lenten reflection, I would like to share with you some of
the rich history that surrounds you every time you celebrate Mass
here at Christ the Good Shepherd. Last week I told you that since
July we have had 67 new families register here, as of today, it is
up to about 90. The following information comes from the
dedication booklet that was created when the church was
dedicated.
Bishop John Morkovsky, D.D. erected the parish community
effective April 1, 1978. Our parish community broke ground on
this property on December 23, 1979 with 370 families. Today we
have over 3000. Initially, Mass was celebrated at Benfer
Elementary School and the rectory was then located in the
Wimbledon subdivision. The community outgrew Benfer and
moved to Strack Intermediate School. The Parish Activity Center
and Administrative Office was finished in November 1980. The
community celebrated its first Mass in the church on May 2, 1981
with 1700 registered families.
The shape of the church building is intended to suggest a tent
structure. The early People of God from the time of Abram to the
time of Joseph’s flight into Egypt were nomads and shepherds.
The central experience of the Old Testament believer was the
Exodus—led by God with their families, flocks and herds, they
were brought from slavery to covenant, from desert to promised
land.
We too, are a “tent people” - called by the Second Vatican
Council a “Pilgrim People of God.” On our journey from Baptism
to eternal glory, we move as community. This “house for the
Church” is only a tent, a stopping place on the journey, but the
place which reminds us of God’s presence among us and in
which we gather to celebrate that presence.
The building is entered from a central gathering place or plaza.
It is semi-circular and composed of four main quadrants (quarter
circles) that do not intersect and have no common axis point. The
wooden framework or arches reach a height of over 70 feet and
from a free, asymmetrical structure. The sweeping upward lines of
ceiling and stained glass cause a spiraling effect creating a
feeling of ascension. The colors throughout (except in the glass)
are monochromatic wood and earth tones utilizing texture and
fabric instead of color to separate space and function. The true
color comes from the People of God, gathering in assembly and
in worship. It is the people who bring life to the building.
The church seats 1060 worshippers comfortably and
provides a large space for the ministry of music (voices
ands instruments). The central liturgical space, tiled with
Travertine marble… (to be continued).
Christ the Good Shepherd come to our aid.

celebrar misa aquí en Christ the Good Shepherd.
desierto a tierra prometida.

Marriage Support Group
Our parish is now offering a Support Group for Marriages. The support group will be for intentional, committed
marriages. Our marriages are committed because we are determined, with God's help, that our marriages be
permanent. Our marriages are intentional, in that we intend, with God's help, to work through whatever obstacles threaten
our marriages.
The support group will use a 12-Step model. The 12-Step Programs were founded by Bill Wilson in 1935. Bill W. was greatly influenced by a
Jesuit priest, Father Ed Dowling. He was so influenced by Fr. Dowling that the 12-Steps appear very similar to the
St. Ignatius Spiritual Exercises. Our Support Group for Marriages will start Thursday evening on March 12th at 5:45 PM before the 7:00 PM Mass, and
continue on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month. Please sign up in the Narthex right after Mass.
