El curso 2013/14 ha sido un año muy
emocionante
lleno
de
actividades
y
aprendizajes en la Escuela Olson Elementary.
La Sra. Frisbie nos ha ayudado a tener un año
muy exitoso y la felicitamos en su primer año
como principal en nuestra escuela. Gracias Sra.

A continuación les hablamos de algunos de los
eventos más emocionantes que han tenido
lugar en Olson.
The 2013/14 school year has been a very exciting
year full of different activities and learning
opportunities at Olson Elementary.
Mrs. Frisbie has helped us to be successful in her
first year as Olson Principal. We want to thank
and congratulate Mrs. Frisbie. You can read about
some of the most exciting events that took place
at Olson this year.

MUSTANG BIG GIVE
Once again, 4th graders at Olson participated in The Mustang Big Give Project. This
project started a few years ago when Mr. Rigby decided to help his 4th graders learn
about service by raising money for different charities.He received a grant from the
D200 Education Foundation that allowed each student to have $3.00. The students
then sold items at a market to raise more money for their charities. All 4th graders at
Olson Elementary.participate in the Mustang Big Give as part of the Social Studies
curriculum. MBG Market opened its doors on April 25th. Students collected
$3,218.24. This is the amount that will be distributed to many different charities as
Helping Paws, St. Jude, Multisclerosis Society, P.A.D.S., Shriners Hospital and many
others.
Good job 4th graders!!!!
PROYECTO MUSTANG BIG GIVE.
Los estudiantes de 4º grado de Olson han participado en un proyecto llamado Mustang Big
Give. Este proyecto comenzó hace algunos años cuando el Sr. Rigby comenzó una unidad
para mostrar a sus estudiantes cómo colaborar con la sociedad y recaudar dinero para
diferentes organizaciones. El Sr. Rigby recibió una beca de la Fundación para la Educación del
D200 en el que los estudiantes reciben 3.00 dólares para donar a una organización Todos los
estudiantes de 4º grado participan en esta actividad como parte del currículum de Estudios
Sociales. El mercado MBG se abrió el 25 de abril. Los estudiantes recolectaron 3,218.24
dólares que se donaron a organizaciones como Helping Paws, St. Jude, Multisclerosis Society,
P.A.D.S., Shriners Hospital y otras muchas más

BATALLA DE LOS LIBROS
Un año más los estudiantes de Olson
participaron en la batalla de los libros. Los dos
equipos finalistas fueron Flaming X Chickens y
The Nobodies Los ganadores fueron Flaming X
Chickens y el equipo representó a Olson en la
competición con las escuelas Westwood y Dean.
Hicieron un buen trabajo pero perdieron contra
Westwood por muy pocos puntos.
Felicidades por el 2º puesto.
For the fifth year, Olson 4th and 5th graders participated in the Battle of the books. The two finalists were Flaming X Chicken and The Nobodies. Our winner was Flaming X Chicken and this team represented Olson at the interschool championship including Olson, Westwood and Dean. Our team was 2nd after Westwood, it was a tight final round.
Congratulations!!!!
D.A.R.E.
There is a program called D.A.R.E. that teaches you not to take drugs, not to smoke, not to
drink alcohol but the main lesson that the program teaches you is that life will be full of
choices and it is up to you which path you take. Officer Gustis was our D.A.R.E. instructor.
Every Friday, Officer Gustis came to Olson to talk to us. At the end of the program, students
are required to write an essay and there is a final celebration. Certificates and pizza were
waiting for 5th graders. We hope all 5th graders learned a lesson from this wonderful
program.
Hay un programa llamado D.A.R.E. que les enseña a no tomar drogas, no fumar,
no tomar alcohol... pero la lección más importante es que la vida estará llena
de diferentes elecciones y qué caminos sigan es lo importante. El oficial Gustis
fue el instructor del programa. Cada viernes venía a Olson para hablar a los
estudiantes. Al final del programa, todos los estudiantes deben escribir un ensayo
y hay una celebración final con diplomas y pizza. Esperamos que todos los
estudiantes de 5º grado hayan aprendido algo de este maravilloso programa.
CLUB DE ARTE
Arte, arte, arte o maravilloso arte. La Sra. Khun
dirigió esta actividad. Transcurrió durante los
recreos y almuerzos los jueves durante 6 semanas.
Fue muy divertido.

art club taught by Mrs. Kuhn. It was
during recess and lunch on Thursdays.

Many of you have seen the No Guns Sign on the main door. There is
a new law in Illinois stating that it is not illegal to carry a gun but
you have to take a test and buy a license. Even though there is a
new law allowing people to carry guns, it is NOT legal at schools.
This sign is a reminder that no guns are to enter the building. Every
District 200 school has the same sign, says Mrs. Frisbie.
Muchos habréis visto la señal de no armas en la puerta principal. Hay una
nueva ley en Illinois que dice que no es ilegal comprar un arma pero hay
que tomar un test y comprar una licencia. Aunque esté permitido por la
ley llevar un arma, está totalmente prohibido entrar con armas en las
escuelas. La señal es un recordatorio. Todas las escuelas del Distrito 200
tienen la misma señal según palabras de la Sra. Frisbie

BANDIDOS DE LAS VACACIONES.
¿Continuará el misterio el próximo curso? ¿Los bandidos nos visitarán de nuevo? ¡¡Tengan
cuidado, pueden estar en cualquier lugar!!
Field Day is a day of fun at Olson. There are a lot of games to play. For instance,
there is a tug-o-war, crazy relays, and a water splash balloon toss. All of the
activities take place behind Olson school in the big field. This year Field day was on
Friday, May 23. The whole school does it so no one is left out. We also get to have a
picnic lunch, learn about Sun Safety and eat frozen treats at the end of the day.
El día de Campo es un día muy divertido en Olson. Tenemos muchos juegos como pelea en la cuerda, relevos locos y
lanzamiento de globos de agua. Todas las actividades se hacen en el campo de fútbol detrás de Olson. Este año se celebra
el 21 de mayo. Toda la escuela participa. Tomamos un almuerzo-picnic, aprendemos sobre salud al sol y tomamos un
refresco helado al final del día para celebrar.
The Cartoon Club is club to learn how to draw cartoons. In my opinion it is really
fun. The club is held in the cafeteria every Tuesday. Ms. Hilger, Mrs. Pawelko, and Mrs.
Parrish are the teachers of the club. Mrs. Parrish started the club because her son Mason
Parrish was a student here at Olson. He died and to honor him, Mason’s family started
the club because Mason loved cartooning.
El club de cómics es un taller para aprender a dibujar cómics. Es muy divertido. El
taller se realizó en la cafetería durante los martes con la ayuda de la Sra. Holger, la Sra.
Pawelko y la Sra. Parrish. Este club se comenzó después de que Mason Parrish, estudiante
de Olson falleciera hace ya dos años. Mason era un apasionado de los cómics y esta es la
manera de Olson de recordarle.
Run, Run, Run here come the Girls on the Run! Molly
Barker started Girls on the Run(GOTR) because when she ran she
felt good so she wanted to start a program so that girls would
feel good and confident when they ran. This year there were 14
girls participating at Olson. The coaches were Deirdre Arnold,
Laura Colangelo, and Leslie McCormick. There was a celebration
5K run at Woodstock North High School on May 18. The coaches
love to coach the girls. During GOTR, participants talk about
being yourself and how to live a healthy, positive life. GOTR
stared in Charlotte, NC in 1996 with only 13 girls. Today there
are over 130,000 participants in Canada and the United States.

¡Chicas a la Carrera! Molly Barker
comenzó este programa porque se sentía bien
cuando corría.Aquel primer año, 1996, 13
chicas en Charlotte, NC fueron las pioneras
Este año 14 participantes de Olson con las
Sras. Colangelo, McCormick y Arnold como
entrenadoras, participaron en la carrera de 5
Kms. en WNHS el pasado 18 de mayo. Las
entrenadoras están muy orgullosas del trabajo
de estas jóvenes deportistas.

Pequeños apuntes ...... Some Tips
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD.
Christmas time is very exciting for everyone but we have to remember the ones who struggle the most. This is why Olson
students brought needed objects such as toothpaste, brushes, socks, small toys, crayons and books. Those objects were
packed in shoe boxes and sent to Uganda and India, where children are in need of them.
Thank you Olson for making a difference!!!
OPERACIÓN NIÑOS EN NAVIDAD.
La Navidad es una época muy divertida y emocionante para todos pero algunas personas tienen dificultades. Por esta
razón los estudiantes de Olson aportaron diferentes objetos como cepillos de dientes, pasta de dientes, calcetines, juguetes,
libros, y colores. Estos objetos se empacaron en cajas de zapatos y se enviaron a Uganda e Índia, donde estos objetos son
muy necesitados.
Gracias estudiantes por ayudar a hacer un mundo un poquito mejor.

Can you believe it? Olson students ran
and walked 22,663 laps and they raised
over $5,000 to be invested by the PTO
into the school. Get ready for our
2014/15 Mustang March Edition by
keeping up with the healthy habits this
summer!!!.

a 7th grader at Northwood
Elementary School, asked if we
would help her start a dual
language newspaper and the rest
is history.Jason, a 5th grader at
Olson will join Elena at NWMS
next year. It has been an honor
and and pleasure to to work with
the entire Thurow family. We
look forward to keeping Elena's
newspaper going for many years
to come.
