Solana Vista Young Scientists Club Inventors’ Showcase MARCH 5, 2014 Set-up 7:45AM in the Kiva (inventions are displayed all day) Reception and Awards 6:00PM in the Kiva Awards for the best invention at each grade level (K-3) and a Peoples’ Choice Award will be presented • The invention can be anything at all to solve any problem your child thinks is important or to create something fun. Kids have created balls that roll by themselves or things to retrieve lost balls from bushes, devices that water plants automatically, fluffy pencils that are comfortable to hold, book lights that turn off automatically if someone falls asleep while reading, new kinds of pooper scoopers, etc. • Some inventors bring a fully functioning prototype, which actually “works,” but this is NOT necessary. Some kids bring a model or drawing. • Bring a display of some king to set up on one of the tables we will place around the Kiva (e.g., a cardboard tri-fold display board from Michaels stands up well on a table). The display should say something about the purpose of the invention (e.g., to create a fun toy, or how the invention solves a problem) and anything you want to say about how it works or was developed. Some are all black and white, while others are colorful, some include photographs of the inventor at work, etc. Completely up to you. • An inventor’s log, which young inventors can fill out to help them think about the invention process, is available from Eric or Douglas (below). You are NOT required to fill out the Inventor’s Log, if you do not want to. We hope you will have fun being creative with your child and look forward to seeing your awesome invention at the showcase on March 5. Play It Safe is based on a simple but effective step-by-step approach where students practice their techniques against trained instructors in age-appropriate scenarios. This empowering class teaches children to be aware of their surroundings, project confidence, trust their intuition and set boundaries. This can only come from hands-on repetitive training. Students will role-play with a mock “would be abductor” and a mock “bully,” while being coached by an instructor. This class has been taught to thousands of children. REL#14-17 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 21, 2014 CONTACT: Tina Jung PHONE: 916-319-0818 E-MAIL: [email protected] California Department of Education Warns Public of Potential Telemarketing Scam SACRAMENTO—The California Department of Education (CDE) has received information today about a possible telemarketing scam and is warning the public not to share any personal information on the telephone with unsolicited callers. Concerned citizens have been calling the CDE to ask whether the state agency has called their homes asking about the Preliminary SAT® (PSAT), a standardized test, which gives students firsthand practice for the college entrance examination. The caller asks for personal information, credit card numbers, and more. The caller ID seems to show the call is coming from the State of California or the main telephone line of the CDE. These calls do not come from the CDE. The CDE has contacted the proper law enforcement agencies to look into this potential scam. If you receive such a call, do not answer any questions and hang up immediately. You may also file a complaint online directly with the Federal Trade Commission using the FTC Complaint Assistant, also in Spanish. #### The California Department of Education is a state agency led by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.
