Ralph Michael Yeoman, 66, who was sentenced to death for the 1988 murder of a Sacramento County woman, was found unresponsive in his cell this morning and subsequently pronounced dead at 5:24 a.m., according to Lt. Sam Robinson. The cause of death remains unknown pending the results of an autopsy, Robinson said. Yeoman was convicted of firstdegree murder following the Feb. 13, 1988, killing, kidnap and robbery of 73-year-old Doris Horrell, a Citrus Heights resident, according to Robinson. Her body was found later that evening in an open field west of Interstate Highway 5, near the former Arco Arena. Yeoman was sentenced to death for the crime and had been on death row since July 23, 1990. Since 1978 when California reinstated capital punishment, 63 condemned inmates have died from natural causes. Additionally, 23 have committed suicide, 13 have been executed in California, and one was executed in Missouri. Six died from other causes, and the cause of death is still pending for two condemned inmates. Of the 725 male offenders on California’s death row, 706 are housed at San Quentin. Nineteen condemned inmates are either out to court, in medical facilities or in custody in other jurisdictions. The plot is an adaption of the true story of Philomena Lee and the search for her son in America with the assistance of recently disgraced journalist Martin Sixsmith. A youthful Philomena (played by Sophie Clark) living in a Irish Catholic convent conceives a child out of wedlock where he is sold in adoption to an American family during the early 1950’s without a chance to say goodbye or the opportunity to establish contact with him. Meanwhile roughly sixty years later, Martin Sixsmith (played by Steve Coogan) having been relieved of his job as a Labour party adviser contemplates what his next project should be and by chance comes into contact with an older Philomena (played by Judi Dench) and vows to assist her search for her son in return for writing a human interest piece. MAR - 14 fw Movie Critics Corner: Philomena What is most remarkable about Philomena is the palette of emotional textures that are effectively portrayed, especially through the performance of Dench. While it is primarily a film about the angst of Philomena loosing a loved one and being tormented by her past, there are genuinely amusing and plentiful sympathetic moments scattered about during the 100 minute runtime. An example of one of the film’s more amusing moments highlighting the plain nature of Philomena would be her arrival to Washington D.C. in which she would prefer to watch a Martin Lawrence movie in her hotel room than visit the sights of the country’s capitol. As usual, Judi Dench excels in her performance playing a devoutly religious older woman opposite of Coogan’s stellar performance as the secular, Oxford-educated Sixsmith and his attempt to re-legitimize his career and personal integrity. 22 . Philomena constantly plays with the audience’s sentiments from pathos, anger, sympathy, mystery, and humor while wraps up elegantly with a sense of catharsis, heightened by the knowledge that her character’s plight was not a creation of artistic license but was in fact real. A particularly moving film, I highly recommend Philomena. all persons depicted in this publication are presumed to be innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. do not attempt under any circumstance to apprehend any persons depicted in this publication. all persons may be considered armed and dangerous by law enforcement. please call the fugitive hotline number (se habla español) or 9-1-1 for an immediate sighting.
