ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON HIS EMINENCE DANIEL CARDINAL DINARDO ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH 6800 BUFFALO SPEEDWAY, HOUSTON, TEXAS 77025, 713-667-9111, FAX 713-667-3453, May 8, 2016, The Ascension of the Lord 1 WWW.SVDP-HOUSTON.ORG May 8, 2016, The Ascension of the Lord Letter From The Pastor Dear Parishioners: The other day I removed several non-Catholic Bibles from the adoration chapel. “But, Monsignor, what’s the problem? Aren’t bibles pretty much the same?” Not really! Actually, they are quite different. The most obvious difference is found in the Old Testament, which has 46 books in the Catholic version, the Protestant version has 39. In addition, some Eastern Orthodox bibles have even more books. Several centuries before Jesus, Jews were captured (Babylon), moved to other countries, engaged in commerce, etc. They did not live in Israel alone. Many of them learned other languages and could no longer read the Scriptures. Jewish leaders decided to translate the Bible into Greek. This translation is known as the Septuagint was the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament. It was transcribed by 72 translators in Alexandria, Egypt and completed about 150 B.C. This Greek translation of the scriptures was needed, as over the centuries the Hebrew language had become a dead language. And as such the Jews of the dispersion needed the scriptures in their vernacular language, namely Greek. The result was a new translation of the Bible known as the Septuagint. This is the Bible Jesus and the early Church used. Circa 75 AD, Jewish rabbis gathered at Jamnia and held a “council.” They decided that the canon of scripture should only contain books written in the original Hebrew be considered official. They removed the books of Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, First and Second Maccabees, as well as additions to Esther and Daniel. This is the Old Testament found in Protestant Bibles in our time. The early Church used the Septuagint and the newer writing of Paul, Peter, John, etc. They considered other writings, which are fully in accord with the Scripture and Church teaching. It took several years into centuries to finalize officially the actual Canon now used by Catholics and Protestants. The councils [more properly Synods] of Carthage in 393 AD and Hippo 397 AD set the official list. The Council of Trent reaffirmed this in 1546 AD. When choosing an edition of the Bible I recommend that you purchase a Catholic version/translation. Many Protestations writers begin from the position that Original Sin put mankind into the state of total depravity. We believe that Original Sin put us into a fallen human nature but good. That can influence how one might translated a passage from Scripture. This can get quite technical and I am giving a very brief overview of the issue. The following web site, http:// www.catholiceducation.org/en/controversy/common-misconceptions/catholic-and-protestant-bibles-what-is-thedifference.html , can fill in more details. CatholicEducation.org is an excellent site for knowledge, encouragement and growth for our faith. I highly recommend you find yourself frequently seeking answers. We know that Jesus is in heaven with his Father and the Holy Spirit As well as with us in the Scriptures and especially in the Eucharist. When you read and pray over the words revealed by God in the Bible, allow your heart the freedom to touch by the wisdom of Love who loves you infinitely. Jesus did not stay on the mountaintop in glory but walked down into to the valley of everyday life with its struggles. Even though he is in heaven, he knows our struggles and pains. He has suffered more than any of us will suffer. He knows what we are going through and will never abandon us. In his mercy, he revealed in the Ascension the glory to come that we not lose the hope of God’s presence in our everyday lives. I pray one day, you will have the opportunity to visit Mount Tabor and celebrate Mass. When the sun hits the window, it feels like you are standing with Peter, James and John. During the week reread the Gospel of the Ascension. Imagine yourself witnessing Jesus with Moses and Elijah. What runs through your mind, heart and soul? God bless and have a great time with Jesus on the mountaintop. Pax et bonum, Msgr. Bill Mass Intentions for the Week Pastor, Rev. Msgr. William Young Parochial Vicar, Rev. If you would like more information please send an email to [email protected]. Volunteer Accountant Needed Fr. John Ugobueze, who lives here at St. Vincent de Paul Parish, has begun a multi-year project to build a high quality, Western -style hospital in a rural area of Nigeria. A team of experienced professionals in the healthcare field including a hospital design architect and a major Houston law firm have already volunteered to help. To complete our team of professionals we will need the assistance of an Accountant. Because of the transnational nature of this project we would prefer the pro bono assistance of a national accounting firm that has an association with a Nigerian accounting firm. Early in his vocation, Fr. John served for 10 years as pastor of a rural Nigerian parish where he personally worked with countless poor, sick, disabled, and mentally disabled parishioners who often suffered serious illnesses. Some suffered painful deaths because quality medical services were too far away or too expensive. This hospital project for rural Nigeria has the blessing of the Nigerian Archbishop of Onitsha, Anambra state. If you are a Accountant with a major accounting firm, please volunteer to help Fr. John in moving this work of mercy closer to becoming a reality. You may leave a message for Fr. John at the Parish Office: 713-667-9111. 6 Deacon Preston Quintela’s Priesthood Ordination & First Mass as a Priest Adult Faith Formation Deacon Preston Quintela invites you to attend his Priesthood Ordination and his first Celebration of Mass as a Priest. Thomas Richter, drafted as a “pinch hitter” in the absence of a wildly popular speaker, enthralls his unsuspecting listeners with a re-telling of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, focusing special attention on the words of the jubilant father to his faithful, jealous child. “My son,” the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.’ Fr. Richter goes on to explain in familybased examples that the goodness of God cannot be earned and that personal holiness cannot be achieved by independent will apart from God, but rather by our total dependence on Him and our earnest desire to accept the good things He wishes to give us. Their new life in Christ has once again infused new life into the Church. Their new-found faith has inspired and bolstered the faith of those who have followed Christ for many years. As the Easter season nears its end, we revisit the scene of our baptisms. In the second reading we hear Christ calling us: “Come. . . . Let . . . the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water” (Revelation 22:17). But our baptism is not one of water only. John refers to washed robes, and we know that this washing is to be “in the blood of the Lamb.” To make sure we get this message, we have today’s first reading from Acts. It is the story of Stephen, the first Christian to be killed for his faith in Jesus. We remember the promise and also the cost of being a disciple of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Sunday: Tuesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Seventh Sunday of Easter; Mother’s Day; World Communications Day St. Damien de Veuster Ss. Nereus and Achilleus; St. Pancras Our Lady of Fatima St. Matthias Today’s Readings First Reading — Because Stephen professes his faith in the Son of Man, he is stoned to death (Acts 7:55-60). Psalm — The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth (Psalm 97). Second Reading — I, the Alpha and the Omega, am coming soon (Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20). Gospel — Father, I pray that they may all be one, as you and I are one, that they may be brought to perfection (John 17:20-26). This encouragement for creativity has deep roots in our tradition, and some attempts at reform show great promise. One of the great treasures in our devotional repertoire is a familiar feature of Lent: the Way of the Cross. The faithful walk a path recalling the events of Christ’s passion, a contemplative experience increasingly enriched these days by scripture and song. There are fourteen stations in the usual configuration, although in recent years, a fifteenth station of the Empty Tomb has been added. Why stop there? Why not develop a similar journey structured on the theme of the appearances of the Risen Lord? Over the last decade, a Via Lucis, or “Way of Light,” has developed as a companion to the Via Crucis. It has been celebrated at the Vatican and is catching on elsewhere. There are fourteen stations, beginning with the Women Carrying Spices to the Tomb, continuing with the familiar appearances of the Lord at Emmaus, the Upper Room, the shore of Tiberias. The journey ends with stations recalling the Apostles’ wait with Mary for the advent of the Spirit, and with Pentecost. This is fertile ground indeed for the genius of artists, musicians, preachers, and liturgists. This is a living example of how many of our traditions are born to fill a great spiritual need, and spread to every corner of the Church. It may even come soon to a church near you. Maybe next Eastertime! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
