omo si de un gran teatro se tratara, con su escenario, su
tramoya, sus camerinos, sus pasadizos... el convento renacentista de San Francisco, antiguo de Santa Catalina, acoge
uno de los establecimientos más emblemáticos de la Red, el de
A l m a gro (Ciudad Real) y, al mismo tiempo, uno de los más visitados.Y si lo comparamos con un gran teatro, es un importante
centro escénico, pues no en vano Almagro se convierte, especialmente en verano, en uno de los centros dramáticos
españoles más importantes, con un Festival de Teatro Clásico, que esta temporada ha celebrado su XXIX edición.

El convento fue mandado construir
por la familia Dávila de la Cueva en
1596, bajo unos estrictos criterios de
austeridad dada la orden religiosa, los
franciscanos, por la que iba a ser ocupado. Véase la fábrica de mampostería; el claustro, de cantería; las celdas,
con muros tapiales y pequeñas ventanas... Un edificio construido con materiales modestos, dadas sus humildes
funciones, pero de una impresionante
grandeza en cuanto a sus dimensiones. Así, el convento reúne en la actualidad un total de 14 patios interiores,
todos distintos aunque igualmente
entrañables, y un amplio número de
estancias (el refectorio, la bodega, los
talleres, las celdas) pasadizos, pasillos...
Como si de un gran centro de teatro se tratara. Y, si se habla del
mundo dramático, ¿qué decir de los personajes? Los monjes que
antaño dedicaban la jornada a la oración, la penitencia y el trabajo han sido sustituidos por variopintos viajeros que buscan entre

m a s o n rywork, the stonework cloister,
the cells with their mud walls and small
w i n d ow s ... A building constructed
with humble materials, in view of its
modest functions, but with impressive
grandeur as regards its dimensions. The
convent comprises nowadays a total of
14 interior court yards, all different but
each as charming as the next, and a
large number of rooms (refectory, winecellars, workshops, cells), passageways,
corridors ... Just like a great theatrical
centre. And, talking of the world of
drama, what about the characters? The monks who in the past
dedicated their days to prayer, penitence and work, have nowadays been replaced by the colourful variety of travellers who come
seeking peace, tranquillity and rest within these cloistered rooms.

imagen de celdas claustrales, con puertas anchas y muy bajitas. No así en su interior, en los que se combinan elementos tradicionales –como la cerámica de los cabeceros, las pilas de agua
bendita o los detalles de forja propios de la zona– con otros
más modernos, de nu evo cuño, como los originales dibujos que
sirven de numeración a las habitaciones o los coquetos carteles
que guían certeros al viajero

capital de la escena. Su Museo
Nacional de Teatro así lo demuestra.
n un lateral de la soberbia plaza de Almagro se levanta,
tras una contemporánea fachada, el Museo Nacional de
Teatro, un singular espacio de visita obligada para los
enamorados de este arte. En junio de 1989 se finalizó la r e h a b ilitación de este edificio de 626 metros cuadrados, que se inauguró
coincidiendo con el XIII Festival Internacional de Teatro Clásico
de Almagro, con una exposición temporal dedicada al teatro en
España en el Siglo de Oro,

Sierra, Adolfo Marsillach, Andrés
Amorós, José Luis Alonso de
Santos y Eduardo Vasco está
muy presente en esta exposición,
que finaliza el 1 de octubre .
La exposición permanente es
un regalo sin edad para los sentidos y una ocasión ideal para
recorrer la historia de la escena
española, ya que profundiza
en el teatro greco-romano, el
m e d i eval, el de los Siglos de
Oro, los siglos XVIII, XIX, el
teatro popular y el de las va nguardias, el teatro lírico, el de
las marionetas... sin dejar de
lado dos interesantes recorridos: uno por los autores, actores y compañías, desde 1920; y otro, por los actores y directores,
después de 1940. Es difícil no sorprenderse mientras se pasea por
las espectaculares salas de este museo. Sus fondos son los más
completos de nuestro país, ya que que sus colecciones se han ido
incrementando a partir de 1991 con escenografías y figurines de
