Second Sunday of Easter April 3, 2016 PRÓXIMO RETIRO 9 Y 10 DE ABRIL Invitamos a todas las parejas que deseen profundizar su compromiso Page 2 2nd Sunday of Easter (Cycle C) Divine Mercy Sunday Pastor’s Corner Today’s readings tirelessly reaffirm that Christ has not only risen, but that He lives forever and ever. When Jesus appeared to the disciples, Thomas the apostle was away. We have just read this familiar story and know it full well. Thomas has just seen Christ and called Him “my Lord and my God”. It is usually said that Thomas believes in Christ because he saw Him. But in a certain sense, it could also be said that Thomas loses his faith when he sees Christ. And I say he loses his faith because he has already seen, he already has proof that it is true. Seeing Christ certainly does away with Thomas’s doubts, and Jesus invites him to “not be unbelieving, but believe”. At the same time, though, He says: “blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” These words of Jesus are addressed to the thousands who believe without having seen, and they include us. We are thus invited to believe without seeing, in the midst of all the doubts that life can throw at us, but with the consolation of the Lord’s presence and with the peace that His presence produces. In the Eucharist we make the Lord Jesus present again, and He gives us His peace, pardons our sins and entrusts to us the ageless message and mission of the Church. Fr. P. Federico Page 3 Page 3 HOLY WEEK AT ST. HUGH SEMANA SANTA EN ST. Page 6 St. Hugh THE DIVINE MERCY / LA DIVINA MISERICORDIA Jesus, I trust in You! Jesús en Ti confío Be Merciful Mercy is love that seeks to relieve the misery of others. It is an active love, poured out upon others to heal, to comfort, to console, to forgive, to remove pain. It is the love that God offers us, and it is the love He demands from us for each other: I give you a new commandment … As I have loved you, so you must love one another (Jn 13:34) … Be merciful even as you Father is merciful (Lk 6:36). Second Sunday of Easter Page 7 The Jubilee of Mercy El Jubileo de la Misericordia If anyone wishes to avoid God’s judgement, he should not make himself the judge of his brother or sister... How much harm words do when they are motivated by feelings of jealousy and envy! To speak ill of others puts them in a bad light, undermines their reputation and leaves them prey to the whims of gossip. To refrain from judgement and condemnation means, in a positive sense, to know how to accept the good in every person and to spare him any suffering that might be caused by our partial judgment, our presumption to know everything about him. But this is still not sufficient to express mercy. Jesus asks us also to forgive and to give. To be instruments of mercy because it was we who first received mercy from God. To be generous with others, knowing that God showers his goodness upon us with immense generosity. Second Sunday of Easter Page 9 On March 18th, the Students from Kindergarten through 8th grade were recognized and honored with the Student of the Month Award. These students were chosen as having demonstrated one or more of the virtues that represent the Spirit of Saint Hugh School: Service, Prayer, Integrity, Respect, Resilience, Intellect, and Trustworthiness. Saint Joseph was a man of great compassion. He was also a man of faith. He did his best to make sure that Jesus and Mary were safe and well cared for. On the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, St. Hugh School honored the students’ fathers and father figures in their lives with a special Mass and reception. These special men share the same responsibility that St. Joseph embraced and are a great example of faith and love in our lives. The students were accompanied by their fathers, grandfathers and father figures at church for a special celebration that included a reenactment of the Gospel when Jesus got lost in the temple. After the mass the fathers and father figures were presented with a special gift and enjoyed a breakfast reception in the school hall while enjoying their portraits as drawn by their children. Page 10 St. Hugh Living Stations of the Cross Every Lent, St. Hugh students perform “The Living Stations of the Cross.” This year both the 7th and 8th grade students recreated the 14 stations that depict the final moments in the life of Jesus. This year the first 8 stations were set up in the classrooms, the ninth in the courtyard, and the tenth in front of the church. Each class would process through each station, stopping to reflect and meditate at each one and finally process into the church for the last four stations. While praying the stations, students witnessed each one come to life in dramatic fashion and explored the thoughts of those who walked with Christ. HRPA Meeting: Wednesday, April 6, at 8 am in the Parish Hall. Dress Down Day: Wednesday, April 6. Bake Sale: Friday, April 8.
