Reflections, Announcements, News, Thoughts
The Pastor’s RANT…
Jesus is not on the Ballot
Over these past few weeks, I have watched the television airwaves filled with politics and election matters
and I have come to a conclusion…JESUS IS NOT ON
THE BALLOT. I wish Jesus was on the ballot and I
hope I would vote for Him. Yet, I am confident He
would not win the election. Why? ...because Jesus is
not a politician. He tells us what we need to hear; not
what we want to hear. He calls out SIN. He challenges
us to LOVE; even our ENEMIES. He uses words and
phrases like…TAKE UP YOUR CROSS, LAY DOWN
YOUR LIFE, SHARE WHAT YOU HAVE…a perfect
formula to lose an election. These words would upset
the average voter, you and me. If Jesus had just multiplied loaves and fishes, healed and raised people from
the dead and done what people wanted Him to do and
avoided talking about sin, He would have set Himself
up to win any election. But, He didn’t. He proclaimed
the Kingdom of God, He challenged the values of the
world, He died on the Cross by showing us what genuine love is all about.
Many people are desperately worried about the election results…I am not among them. Oh, I have my
preferences! And of course, people should pray and
discern and bring their Catholic values into the voting
booth AND VOTE. It does make a difference in shaping our world.
But, regardless of who wins and what measures are
passed, there is one undeniable fact…OUR SALVATION IS NOT ON THE BALLOT. Jesus has already
won the victory over sin and death. Our task is to be
faithful to Him…to carry on proclaiming His message,
living the values of His Kingdom, challenging the values of this world. The end of the story (GOD WINS)
doesn’t change because of an election. So, on election
day, I will look for Jesus on the ballot and will not find
Him. Then, I will go to Mass and He will be there…
continuing to challenge me about my sins, loving me
with an authentic love, and I will feel a peace that no
election can give me. I hope you do the same.

Back to School Supplies
Our local Catholic Schools have very limited budgets for supplies and materials. As a parish, we support local Catholic education by collecting school supplies for neighborhood Catholic
Schools. We will be collecting supplies after Masses this weekend and next. They greatly appreciated our past contributions.
Please drop off all items on the side of the altar after each
Mass. Thank you for your generosity.

Ministerio Hispano
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Decimonoveno Domingo
del Tiempo Ordinario
En la parábola del domingo
pasado del “Rico Insensato”
escuchamos una razón de
peso para hacer lo que es
correcto aquí y ahora
“‘¡Insensato!’ Esta misma
noche vas a morir” (Lucas

Faith Formation
Faith Formation is a vital element of every Catholic
parish. The role of parish faith formation is to provide
organized and systematic approach to the instruction
and practice of the faith for everyone in the parish
community. The goal of this formation is to give each
member an understanding of their faith so they can
evangelize and witness to the faith in the greater secular community. The programs offered at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral parish reflect the diversity of an urban Southern California parish.
In addition to the weekly catechetical program special
events and speakers are presented throughout the
parish’s pastoral year.
RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults)
RCIA an Invitation for everyone
to Community in Christ.
At St. Joseph Cathedral’s parish community we believe that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA
process. The RCIA’s invitation is for those individuals who have not been baptized and wish to enter into
a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic
Faith Community. The invitation is for those from
other Christian Faith communities who wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church.
Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist will find the invitation is
for them to complete those sacraments. Catholics
who have not been active in their faith and wish to
return to an active sacramental relationship with the
faith community will find the RCIA a place to have
that journey. Also, Catholics who wish to renew their
faith by refreshing their knowledge of the church’s
teaching are most welcome.
Evangelization and Catechesis are the hallmarks of the
RCIA at St. Joseph Cathedral. For more information
write Bill Bischoff at [email protected] or call
the Parish Office.
