Preparing for Jesus
Preparándonos para Jesús
Today’s readings and prayers mark the beginning of the
liturgical year. As we commemorate the first chapter of
our salvation story, Jesus reminds us in the gospel that
it is intrinsically woven to the events we celebrated last
week – His second coming at the end of time. We are
reminded in the first reading that our anticipation of this
final triumph begins with God’s promise to send a savior. This is the joyful hope that we experience during
this Advent season. We return to a focus of anticipation
as we prepare our homes, assemble the advent
wreaths, and light the first candles. The reading from
Jeremiah records God’s words, “I will fulfill the promise I
made to the house of Israel and Judah. In those days,
in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he
shall do what is right and just in the land.” This is where
our hearts are«waiting and anticipating the birth of the
Savior. The responsorial psalm informs that God
shows us how to anticipate Christ’s coming, “Your
ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths,
guide me in your truth« for you are God my savior and
for you I wait all the day.” This preparation period is
one that asks us to prayerfully await Christ’s coming.
This focus runs counter to the frenetic pace of the secular culture. Jesus warns us to
“beware that your hearts do not
become drowsy from carousing,
and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day,
(his second coming), catch you
by surprise like a trap.” Jesus
encourages us to prepare during
the commemoration of his birth
so that we will be ready “to
stand before the Son of Man”
when he comes again.

Safe Environment
Did you Know?
Who should report child
abuse?
Priests, deacons, school faculty
and administrators and other staff
members in our parishes and
schools have been designated as
mandated reporters under California law. When one of these persons receives information
leading to a “reasonable suspicion” that a child is being
abused or neglected, he or she must make a report to the
appropriate child protection or law enforcement agency.
However, every adult has a moral responsibility to report
suspected child abuse. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article

on Reporting Abuse,” email: [email protected].

adulto
tiene

Assisted Suicide
“Spotlight” is a major motion picture
Stop Assisted Suicide in CA
before it’s too late! Earlier this
year, through a Special Session, the CA legislature
passed assisted suicide, allowing doctors to prescribe
overdose medication to terminally ill patients. Join a coalition of physicians, nurses,
disability-rights organizations, and people of all faiths to
stand for the lives of our elderly and dying and oppose
assisted suicide! Why Oppose Assisted Suicide?
 ·
Sends the Wrong Message: Legalizing suicide
for the terminally ill, while discouraging it for the rest
of the population, teaches that the lives of the ill and
disabled do not matter to our society.
 ·
Will Worsen Patient Care: Patients in other
states, like Barbara Wagner in Oregon, are being
denied treatment prescribed by their doctors, and
instead offered drugs for assisted suicide.
 ·
Will Increase Non-Terminal Suicide Rates: Suicides skyrocket when assisted suicide is legalized.
Oregon's suicide rate for non-terminal people increased 49% after assisted suicide became legal.

opening in select markets on November
6 that tells the story of how the Boston
Globe newspaper’s Spotlight Investigative Unit uncovered the child sex abuse
scandal in the Archdiocese of Boston in
2002. It will go into limited release on November 6 and
national release on November 20.
Vatican Radio has described the film as “honest” and
“compelling,” saying that the Globe’s coverage of the
scandal – for which it won a Pulitzer Prize – helped the
Church in the United States “to accept fully the sin, to admit it publicly and to pay the consequences.” It is possible the film may open up old wounds, and we need to express our care to the victim/survivors. If anyone approaches you and says they were abused by clergy or
anyone else, encourage them to report to the proper authorities and invite them to seek pastoral care through
Suzanne Healy, Victim Assistance Coordinator for the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, at (213) 637-7650.
If anything, the film reminds us that the sex abuse scandal isn’t something to “put behind us,” but instead is
something we need to keep in front of us at all times so
we can stay vigilant and make sure it never happens
again, and that we never deviate from our commitment to
creating a safe environment for our children and young
people. Please remember this is an opportunity to share
the ongoing commitment and efforts by the Church and
the many individuals who have worked tirelessly in the
safe environment programs to protect children, heal those
harmed by abuse and continue to educate our communities on the importance of abuse prevention.
