Dear Friends in Christ – Thank you for your support of the 2012
NEW YORK CITY
Dear Friends in Christ –
Thank you for your support of the 2012 Archdiocesan Stewardship Appeal. The appeal funds
vital human service programs of the Archdiocese. If you have not yet made your gift, envelopes
are available at the church entrance or you can go to www.stewardshipappeal.org.
I also want to thank you for supporting the Fordham University Global Outreach bake sales over
the last few weeks. Both bake sales helped the students get closer to their goals; one group is
going to Africa and the other Latin America.
More opportunities to participate in assisting student and parish programs will be available. Our
own Mustard Seed program of Hogar Belén in Nicaragua will be sponsoring fundraisers in the
spring & summer. And, students from Julliard will be hosting a fundraiser here as well for their
music teaching program in Mexico later in April.
And many thanks to help with last Sunday’s homeless banquet! We served and enjoyed many
conversations with about 350 guests.
This weekend the second collection for Catholic Relief Services helps provide needed funds for
international relief efforts. Check out some of their amazing work at www.crs.org.
All of these opportunities allow us to participate in the Lenten call to almsgiving. Thank you for
your generosity.
This weekend, please don’t miss a wonderful opportunity to reflect on prayer during Lent with
Father Jim Martin, SJ, the author of some great spirituality books. He will be making a
presentation on “Praying during Lent” this Sunday at 6:30pm in the Parish Center (after the
Sunday, 5:15pm mass).
May our Lenten retreat bring us closer to the LORD!
Peace – Fr. Gil

MARCH 18, 2012
PRAYING DURING LENT
WITH FR. JAMES MARTIN, SJ
ARTS AND ARTISTS AT ST. PAUL
Come and reflect on prayer during your Lenten
journey on Sunday, March 18th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm
at the Parish Center. As many Catholics approach
Lent, they think: “I’ve got to give something up!” But
here’s another way of thinking about the season: as a
time to explore new ways of prayer. For example, if
you like to pray with the daily Gospel readings, you
might instead use the prayers of the Mass (like the
beautiful prefaces to the Eucharistic prayers for
Sundays in Lent) as something new. Sometimes we
pray for change or conversion. But one needs to be
patient when it comes to change. Conversion isn’t a
once-and-for-all event. It takes time—even a lifetime.
Arts and Artists at St. Paul will continue its 2012
Broadway’s Future series on Monday, March 26th at
6PM at The New York Public Library for the
Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. The concert
will be held in the Bruno Walter Auditorium - 111
Amsterdam Avenue - just south of 65th Street. This
month’s concert will feature the songs of acclaimed
composer/lyricist, Rob Rokicki. Joining him will be
performers from the Broadway casts of Wicked,
Mama Mia, Addams Family, Million Dollar Quartet,
Hair, Book of Mormon, and more. The Songbook
Series is produced, directed and hosted by John
Znidarsic. Admission is FREE and seating is on a
first come-first serve basis. For further information,
please take a moment to check our website at:
www.artsandartistsatstpaul.org.

story about family, friends and the challenges we face
while navigating this ever-changing and complicated
world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an irascible
American doctor who comes to France to deal with
the tragic loss of his son (Emilio Estevez). Rather than
return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical
pilgrimage "The Way of St. James" to honor his son's
desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn't plan on
is the profound impact this trip will have on him.
Through unexpected and oftentimes amusing
experiences along "The Way," Tom discovers the
difference between "the life we live and the life we
choose.” RSVP at the Welcome-Center Bookstore at

the last day of the Council in 1965. Their topics remain
relevant today youth, church and politics, art and
beauty, suffering, labor and immigration, religion and
science and the role of women.

Saturday, March 24th. We will meet at St. Paul’s at 8:00
am, begin on the northern tip of Manhattan and end with
Mass near the World Trade Center Memorial. Along the
way there will be about 7-8 stops at Catholic churches where
the priest will give a short talk to the group. For more
details, visit pofnyc.org to look at the photos of last year's
walk. One important thing to remember is that there are no
rules you have to follow! The walk is about 13 miles total
but you can decide for yourself how far you want to go. You
can stop at any point. Also, feel free to take a train or cab
along the way. The walk is free and it is not a fundraiser of
any kind. You just have to register at the WelcomeCenterBookstore before the 24th.
