Reflecting on #119
Dear TECites and Team of Kairos TEC #119,
As you continue your fourth day of TEC, we
hope you aren’t forgetting to build, dream, pray, believe,
sing, and love—anyway! We can all make a difference
in others’ lives. A special smile, hug, or kind words are
all ways we can be Christ to one another. It’s up to you
to use your one voice to make this world a better place.
Your care and concern for each other and
willingness to participate in all activities from posters to
skits to prayer services, plus your respectful attention to
all meditations were very much appreciated and helped
make TEC #119 a truly special one.
We look forward to seeing all of you at future
TECs, whether it be as fellow Team members or at
Reunions. Every role on a TEC retreat is a special one
and helps make each TEC a unique experience.
In His love,
Steve and Sue Brink, Co-Directors
P.S. Christ lives on through your love for each other.
We love you!
Dear TECites and Team of TEC #119,
There was something special in the air as we, the
TECites and Team of TEC #119, gathered at the water’s
edge in Dodgeville. John the Baptist accompanied us
and called us into the healing, exciting, life-giving
waters of the Paschal Mystery. Amidst fire alarms, fruit
flies, flushings, and a wandering cow, we all saw our
true colors and the source of their illumination.
It was powerful and mystical when the signs
made their appearances. From rainbows and backpacks
to redneck TECs and trips to Holland, we all came to the
same conclusion - it was all Tom’s fault and yet we
heard the one voice telling us to do it anyway.
Father Dave Timmerman
Spiritual Director, TEC #119
Dear TECites and TEC #119,
I had a wonderful God Experience in Dodgeville
and I don't believe that it is now September. I hope many
of you have continued to pass the Words of God on to
your families and friends; I have. I am teaching 6th
grade at my Church, St Patrick’s in Elkhorn, and have
decided to use the Bible as my main teaching tool and to
use the many ideas and experiences from my TECs as
my learning guide.
I was hoping to be able to attend Janesville TEC
#121, but as of this letter, my boyfriend and I are in the
process of purchasing a home for us to start a new life
together. It has been an exciting time, but very scary
also, and if everything goes as planned we would be
moving in the same weekend as TEC, so if I can't be
there, I wish everyone God’s blessing and strength.
In God’s Love
Ann Timmerman
Wheat Team Director
Dear “Love Ewe Anyway” Wheaties,
TEC #119 in Dodgeville was truly one that I will
always hold in a special place in my heart. We had so
much fun on the Wheat Team, and none of it even
seemed like work! It was amazing how we didn’t have to
ask for a job to be done more than once, if at all!
Our chapel times together meant the most - all
the family connections and stories we shared - and how
meaningful for me to share all that with my sister Deb E.
for the very first time! At Mass, the words “Behold the
Lamb of God” will always have a most special meaning
to us because of all we experienced at TEC #119. And I
am still wondering if John the Baptist’s camel hair
itches? Every time I hear that gospel reading in the
future, I will have a hard time refraining from chuckling
about all those questions!
What a wonderful Reunion ~ to be part of
honoring Barb Wills as this year’s Spirit of TEC Award
recipient was fun (see separate article). I also was
touched by the TECite prayers around the altar at
Benediction.
What a gift for our diocesan priests to be able to
take time out of their busy schedules to celebrate the
Sacrament of Reconciliation with us (including the
Wheat Team). And thanks to Sharon and Jeff Davis who
helped us out Saturday and Sunday – your hard work
never goes unnoticed!
I love each and every one of EWE for being EWE!
DeAnne Gile
WT Assistant Director
P.S. ~ Next time you see Judy Fillback, have her
pronounce “Meet the Fockers” for you!
Greetings to the TECites and Team of TEC #119,
The Lord is My Shepherd ~ I shall not want. I have
everything I need.
I am humbled and in complete awe of a beautiful
June weekend in Dodgeville that was given to each of
us, but not given to each of us in the same way. We all
had different reasons and needs for being on TEC #119,
but God had His plan, and what a beautiful plan it was!
What more could we want?
He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me
to quiet pools of fresh water.
In this hectic world we live in, it is so
comforting to know that TEC is a place we can always
go to ~ whether it's reflecting back on our first TEC or
working wheat with old friends and making many more
new friends ~ it's always a safe 'place' to go for the fresh
waters that we all so desperately need.
He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right
paths, as He has promised.
Our strength IS in the Lord. Let go and let Him
lead us to where we need to be.
Even if I go through the deepest darkness, I will not
be afraid, Lord, for you are with me.
Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.
The Wheat Team, all 23 of us, looked at Psalm
23 through the eyes of the shepherd. We know that God,
like the shepherd, will never leave even one sheep lost in
the darkness. Neither the shepherd nor God will rest
until they are all gathered to Him.
You prepared a banquet for me, where all my
enemies can see me: you welcome me as an
honored guest and fill my cup to the brim.
Kudos to the cooks and kitchen coordinator of
TEC #119! The 'banquets' were served with love and
honor to Him, who serves us every day of our lives. Our
cups overflow.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me
all my life; and your house will be my home
as long as I live.
What a gift He has given us! What promise that,
no matter what, we WILL have a place with Him in
eternity! WOW!! It has been an honor to serve on TEC
#119. Thank you, God, for bringing the TECites and
Team into your flock and for watching over us always.
In His Name and For His Glory,
Beth Skala
Wheat Team Spiritual Director
Reflecting on #120
To the wonderful participants of TEC #120,
So, how is everybody doing? It has been a few
weeks since TEC #120 took place. I ask myself and pray
to God that the inner light, lightened or perhaps made
stronger by the presence of the Lord keeps shining
brightly in our lives.
Sometimes I wonder what it is like to be in
heaven… I imagine a place filled with different people,
speaking different languages, loving each other and
praising and loving God. Then, I come to realize that I
glimpsed at heaven this weekend at TEC #120. We were
all from different ages that ranged from conceived
babies in their mom’s wombs to wise people who had
already walked on earth for several years…, we all
spoke one or two, or in Sugar Bear’s case, three
languages! We served one another, we prayed, we
praised, we laughed, we cried and we entered in the
Presence of God willing to let Him take over our lives.
I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity to
serve this lovely group of TECites. Each one of them
touched my life over the weekend in a special form.
Their willingness to participate, their interest, their
support, their love, their laughter and the beautiful
relationships they discovered over the weekend…(I had
never seen a group stay after the sent forth ritual for
hours bonding and signing bibles and waiting until the
last minute to say goodbye).
I am happy to be able to work side by side with
persons who are true examples to follow. We were
blessed with Terri and Sugar Bear in the conference
room, two friendly, loving individuals who showed us
with actions their love for God and the Hispanic
community. “Aplauso por Favor!”
I feel honored to have worked together with the
“behind the door” Wheat Team. Their hard work,
prayers and love were so strong that by the end of TEC
there was no one at TEC #120 who had not been deeply
touched by such service in the name of God. To all of
them, may the Lord keep them so close to His heart
always and a Zillion thank you’s in His name.
I am blessed and grateful for the people who
worked really hard so that this TEC would take place, to
those who welcomed the group of TEC #120 at the
reunion and made Benediction a powerful experience for
all of us. And especially to those who prayed and prayed
and prayed before, during and after the TEC.
Most importantly I thank someone truly special
in my life, someone who is alive and shows me the path
I should walk to get to closer and closer to Him, despite
the fact the journey is difficult. He never leaves my side
and He lets me know how much He loves me day by
day…. I want to thank the real Director of this weekend.
I thank with a humble heart fired with the love for HIM:
My Celestial Father, My Lord Jesus Christ and MY
strength, The Holy Spirit, as I enter and humbly remain
in the Presence of their Love.
Blessings, Love and Peace,
Erika Paiz-Gamon
Director
P.S. I hope that we get to work together to keep building
the loving community of TEC.
idiomas, amándose mutuamente y alabando y amando a
Dios.
Nombre.
Padre Celestial, Mi Señor Jesucristo, y Mi fuerza, El
Dear TECites and Team of TEC #120:
As I sat reflecting on all that happened this
past TEC, I couldn't decide exactly what to write about.
Should it be about what we did in the Wheat Team
Chapel? Maybe something that happened in our work
oom? Then again, perhaps something that occurred
during the reunion. But, nothing that we did during any
one event captured what really happened on the
weekend.
What happened on the weekend was the
reverse of the story about the Tower of Babel in chapter
11 of the Book of Genesis. We all know of the story, the
people were trying to build a tower so high that they
would make a name for themselves. That is when their
language was confused and people could not
communicate with each other. Even though we all did
not speak the same native tongue, our communication
was one of God’s love for His people. The great apostle
to the Gentiles, St. Paul, declared that it was not
necessary for the Gentiles to become Jews before
becoming Christian. Likewise, nobody has to learn one
language or another before Jesus becomes their Savior.
He is the Savior of all, regardless what language we
speak. That is the message that I received working this
weekend on TEC# 120. May Jesus who is Lord and
Savior of us all, make us one body in His love.
God Bless,
Jean Jozefowicz
Wheat Team Spiritual Director
Jean Jozefowicz
Directora Espiritual del Equipo de Trigo.
Dear TECites and Team of TEC 120,
This was a special weekend for all of us, where
we entered into the presence of the Lord together. There
were some challenges this weekend, not only were about
half the Wheat Team first time Wheaties, but one half
couldn’t speak Spanish and the other half had a hard
time with English! That made things difficult in the
beginning, but before long we had our established
translator Wheaties and things went pretty smoothly. But
the differences in language were not really a barrier
between us at all. All of us were ready and willing to
serve the TECites and be Christ to them, and we didn’t
need to understand each other’s words to bond together
and become the Body of Christ for the TECites, and for
each other. And I do believe that by God’s grace we
were able to do both! Experiencing that this weekend
was something special. Thank you, every one of you on
the Wheat Team, for working this weekend. You truly
are the Body of Christ and I am sure that God will
continue to use you to help bring about his Kingdom on
Earth.
I was constantly impressed at how dedicated
our Wheat Team was “behind the door” at TEC #120 –
whether working, praying, singing, or doing all three!
And I was especially impressed at how enthusiastic the
TECites were; TECites of TEC #120 – you rock! I could
see the spark of God’s love in your eyes on Go Day, and
I pray that that spark never dies. As we entered into the
presence of the Lord this weekend, let’s continue to stay
in the presence of the Lord every day. For we know that
He is with us always and will never leave our side. If we
meditate on that, we can be filled with the Joy of God’s
presence every minute of every day, no matter where we
are or what we are doing. Let’s lift up every little thing
we do to God and let His presence permeate us to the
depths of our souls.
Peace and Love in Christ,
Katelin Cummins
Wheat Team Assistant Director
y nunca abandona nuestro lado.
almas.
Paz y Amor en Cristo
Katelin Cummins
Asistente del Director del Equipo de Trigo.
Dear TECitos and Team of TEC 120,
TEC #120 was a beyond amazing retreat. The
TECitos overflowed with the faith of Christ, the workers
were all committed to work both psychical and spiritual,
and you could feel the Holy Spirit’s presence throughout
the weekend. Christ was surely present and I thank all of
you who took the time to step out of your comfort zones
(everyone who made the reunion and/or worked the
retreat who were more comfortable with one language
than another, everyone who stepped out of a comfortable
daily routine to spend time serving others, the TECitos
who walked into a different environment, etc.) and
hopefully came to realize that God can help us through
any obstacles put before us.
I hope that anyone reading this who is more
comfortable with their English than Spanish does or will
understand that you should not let language be a barrier
in you contributing your time to help a Spanish-language
TEC retreat. And on a similar note, for all of those
people reading this who are more comfortable speaking
Español than Inglés, you are welcome to apply to work
an English-language TEC. We will do our best to help
you feel comfortable in that environment, and I know
that we have wonderful bilingual people in our TEC
family who could potentially assist you. So gracias to all
involved in the weekend. We are a wonderful family,
united by the love of Christ. Let us never forget that.
Peace and love through Jesus Christ
our Lord and Savior,
-Patrick “Grande P” Campbell, TEC 120 Wheat
Team Assistant Spiritual Director
PS: Grande P’s Grande Pa.
ayudarles.
Entonces, gracias a todos los que participaron
este fin de semana. Nosotros somos una maravillosa
familia, unida por el amor de Cristo. Que nunca
olvidemos esto.
Paz y Amor a través de Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor y
Salvador

Kairos TEC Community Members Attend 2007 National TEC Congress
By DeAnne Gile
On July 13th to 15th, 2007, six of us from the Kairos TEC
Community, traveled to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to attend the second
Annual National TEC Congress, where this year’s theme was “Mary:
Guide to Perfect Discipleship”. Kairos TEC Board members Judy
Fillback, DeAnne Gile, and Jeni Olson were joined by Cathy
Robertson, Beth Skala and Barb Wills on their three-day trip to
Missouri. It was Jeni and Beth’s first trip to National.
The National TEC Congress unites members of international
TEC ministry (67 faith communities), providing a time of prayer and
partnership, and featuring a special delegate session and presentations
by diocesan and TEC leaders. We examined what it means to be a
disciple of Jesus Christ in the TEC ministry. Two members from each
TEC Center are invited to collaborate and be part of the special delegate session, and this year, Kairos TEC from the
Diocese of Madison was represented by Beth Skala and Barb Wills. What we found out is that other TEC Centers
around the country and world celebrate many of the same gifts our Community has, in addition to some of the same
struggles (examples: lower TECite numbers and cancelled TECs, as our Kairos TEC experienced during our 2006-2007
program year). “It was truly an opportunity to network, share ideas, pray for each other, and create a strong bond
among our family of faith”, as described by Ron Reiter, the TEC Conference Director.
During the Congress, the six friends also celebrated with Barb Wills, as she was recognized as this year’s
Kairos TEC’s Spirit of TEC award recipient. T-E-C now has acronyms for Teens, Troops, Twenties, To, and Together
Encountering Christ. To learn more about the National TEC Conference, other TEC Centers around the world and the
history of TEC, visit: www.TECConference.org
2007 Spirit of TEC Award Winner Named
The Kairos TEC Board is pleased to announce that the recipient of this year’s Spirit of
TEC Award is Barb Wills! Barb was presented with this annual award at the TEC #119
Reunion in June in Dodgeville. The award is given to a person who lives out the Paschal Mystery
in his or her life, has contributed to TEC in a significant way on a local or regional level, is
committed to serving the Church and its youth and young adults and who generously shares his or
her love, faith, and enthusiasm with others.
At the June Reunion, TEC Board members, and previous recipients of the award,
presented a skit entitled: “The history of the Kairos Spirit of TEC Award”. During portions of
the skit, we asked Barb Wills to play her guitar as we all joined in singing “This Little Light of
Mine”. Needless to say, Barb had no idea what we were leading up to when the history of Kairos
TEC arrived at 2007!
Barb lives in Hazel Green, and is a member of St. Francis de Sales Parish, where she is
CRE for Religious Education, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and member of the Folk Choir. Barb made TEC #18 in
Janesville in December, 1986, and has since worked numerous TECs. She’s been Musician, Resource, Sacristan, and
Assistant Director in the Conference Room, and also Wheaty, Musician, and Director on the Wheat Team. Barb also
served as Manual Coordinator on the Kairos TEC Board from 2003 to 2006.
Barb enjoys reading, music, theater and spending time with friends. Miss Wills, as she is affectionately called
by her students, has taught at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Sinsinawa for 20 years. Her mom lives in Hazel Green,
her father is deceased and she has a sister and two brothers. Barb went to the Holy Land in the year 2000 with a number
of TEC Community members, and she had a wonderful time! Barb has also attended National TEC Conventions,
including July of this year. You will find Barb at nearly EVERY Kairos TEC Reunion, playing her guitar!
The plaque that was presented to Barb reads: “We thank you for sharing your gift of music ministry, your
incredible organizational skills in updating our manuals, and always being ready and available to take on any position
needed for the various TECs. We appreciate your dedication, not only to TEC, but to your many students, your time in
volunteering in community programs, and always with a bright smile!”
Congratulations to Barb Wills!

Lots of good things are happening on the Kairos TEC Board and we’ve
had a busy summer! As you can see by the enclosed TEC Board list, we’ve had
several changes on the Board.
We give thanks for the gift of Robin Lange and Brad Richardson, as
their terms have ended with Robin as our Food Service Coordinator and Brad as our
Program Coordinator. They’ve been a vital part of our TEC Program and we will be
seeing them at future TECs!
Thanks to Dan Lange, who has agreed to stay on board as Supply Coordinator for an
additional year.
We warmly WELCOME the following who will be serving three-year terms on the Kairos TEC
Board:
Patrick Campbell, Publicity Coordinator
Jeff Davis, Program Coordinator
Sharon Davis, Food Service Coordinator
Carol Statz, Newsletter Coordinator
Yes, we now have a Newsletter Coordinator! It was a bittersweet decision for me to step down as
the Grain of Wheat newsletter editor as I have loved putting it together, but it was definitely time for me to
“pass it on” and am happy to do so, to our new editor, Carol Statz! Watch for a new and improved look!
In addition to this Grain of Wheat newsletter, the Board is looking at ways to enhance our
communications with all members of the TEC Community. Our website has been updated (thank you
Steve Brink!), so check it out at www.grainofwheat.us - you will find useful information, in addition to
the Team application (in English and Spanish) and even the TECite application.
We also have a new e-mail address with the hopes of assisting in improving communication. You
each should soon be receiving (or maybe already have) an e-mail from [email protected] - we will
be using this new e-mail address as an additional outlet for prayer requests, carpooling to TECs and
Reunions, and any TEC news and announcements. If you wish to be removed from this e-mail list, simply
reply to that e-mail with “remove” in the subject line.
Thank you ALL for being part of our Kairos TEC Community,
DeAnne Gile
