How did the celebration of
Advent come about?
The celebration of Advent has evolved in the spiritual life of the
Church. The historical origins of Advent are hard to determine
with great precision. In its earliest form, beginning in France,
Advent was a period of preparation for the Feast of the Epiphany, a day when converts were baptized. Eventually, similar
practices spread to England. In Rome, the Advent preparation
did not appear until the sixth century, and was viewed as a
preparation for Christmas with less of a penitential bent.
The Church gradually more formalized the celebration of Advent.
The Gelasian Sacramentary, traditionally attributed to Pope St.
Gelasius I (d. 496), was the first to provide Advent liturgies for
five Sundays. Later, Pope St. Gregory I (d. 604) enhanced these
liturgies composing prayers, antiphons, readings, and responses.
Pope St. Gregory VII (d. 1095) later reduced the number of Sundays in Advent to four. Finally, about the ninth century, the
Church designated the first Sunday of Advent as the beginning of
the Church year.

Psalm 32: Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Despite the “sketchy” history behind Advent, the importance of
this season remains to focus on the coming of our Lord. (Advent
comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming.”) The Catechism stresses the two-fold meaning of this “coming” : “When the
Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes
present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in
the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for His second coming” (No. 524).
A good, pious way to help us in our Advent preparation has been
the use of the Advent wreathe. (Interestingly, the use of the Advent wreathe was borrowed from the German Lutherans in the
early 1500s.) The wreathe is a circle, which has no beginning or
end: So we call to mind how our lives, here and now, participate
in the eternity of God’s plan of salvation and how we hope to
share eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. The wreathe is
made of fresh plant material, because Christ came to give us
new life through His passion, death, and resurrection.
Three candles are purple, symbolizing penance, preparation, and
sacrifice; the pink candle symbolizes the same but highlights the
third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, when we rejoice because our preparation is now half-way finished.
The light represents Christ, who entered this world to scatter the
darkness of evil and show us the way of righteousness. The progression of lighting candles shows our increasing readiness to
meet our Lord. Each family ought to have an Advent wreathe,
light it at dinner time, and say the special prayers. This tradition
will help each family keep its focus on the true meaning of Christmas. In all, during Advent we strive to fulfill the opening prayer
for the Mass of the First Sunday of Advent: “Father in Heaven, ...
increase our longing for Christ our Savior and give us the
strength to grow in love, that the dawn of His coming may find us
rejoicing in His presence and welcoming the light of His truth.”

<< ADVIENTO TIEMPO DE ESPERANZA,
CONVERSION Y VIGILANCIA>>
Iniciamos el Adviento con la gracia del Señor en el que celebramos la triple venida de Jesús: el Señor vino, el Señor viene, el
Señor vendrá. El tiempo litúrgico del Adviento es un tiempo de espera porque anhela y prepara la llegada del Señor.
Es esperanza lo que más necesitamos. No se puede vivir sin esperanza, sin tener razones para esperar. En estos tiempos de desesperanza y desilusión, resuena con fuerza e intensidad la voz del profeta:
“decid a los pusilánimes de corazón: el Señor viene a salvarnos”.
¡Ánimo y adelante! Con la ayuda del Señor podemos levantarnos y
caminar aunque sólo podamos dar unos pasos pequeños.
Este mensaje de esperanza no es sólo para los cristianos; también
lo es para los que no creen, para los que no practican la fe, para los
que han perdido la fe…Un mundo sin esperanza camina hacia su
fracaso. En algunos hay sufrimiento y dolor; en otros hay expectación y anhelo; en todos, esperanza… Pienso en los ancianos, enfermos, desvalidos, accidentados, parados… Pienso en los hogares que
han experimentado con dolor y esperanza la muerte de un ser querido…
A todos quiero hacer llegar mi palabra llena de esperanza y de
aliento para todos y cada uno. No nos hundamos en la desesperanza,
en la tristeza, en la decepción… El Señor nos invita a todos a caminar. Una luz se encendió en el horizonte para ti y para mí. Dejémoslos iluminar por ella y pongámoslos en camino…
Sepan que una de las tareas más grandes que la Iglesia debe realizar siempre es ayudar a los hombres a esperar, dar esperanza, comunicar esperanza, transmitir esperanza…y junto a esto: “dar razón de
nuestra esperanza a quien nos la pida”.
No perdamos la esperanza. Adviento nos invita a recobrar la esperanza si se ha perdido; a renovar la esperanza si se ha debilitado; a
compartir la esperanza con los que la han perdido… El Señor viene a
salvarnos. Abramos nuestros corazones al Señor. ¡Levántate y camina! ¡Nos queda mucho camino que recorrer! No te quedes tirado al
borde del camino pensando que nada se puede hacer…Tú puedes
hacer algo, poco o mucho, con la ayuda del Señor…¿Por qué te quedas inactivo, decepcionado…? Con lamentos no se arregla nada. Con
ilusión y entrega podemos hacer algo a favor de los demás….
El Señor viene a ayudarnos en nuestros trabajos, dolores, sufrimientos, angustias, problemas…El Señor nos ayuda a superarlos; hasta lo
más difíciles de superar -como la muerte de un ser querido- vivirlos en
paz y serenidad, siempre unidos a Jesucristo. No caigamos en el desánimo, pues éste nos puede llevar a encerrarnos en nosotros mismos, a
rebelarnos contra Dios y contra los demás, a endurecernos… Y esto ni
nos hace bien a nosotros, ni hace bien a los demás.
Pero demos un paso más. Nuestra esperanza no se reduce a las cosas
de este mundo, con ser buenas y hermosas. No olvidemos que hemos
sido engendrados a una esperanza viva por la gracia de Dios. Esperamos la venida de Jesucristo aquí y ahora, en silencio, a nuestras almas
y, al final de los siglos, esperamos su venida gloriosa…. Desde el recuerdo de la primera venida de Jesús en Belén, la Iglesia nos invita a
elevar nuestra mirada esperanzada hacia la llegada de Cristo al final de
los tiempos, cuando venga con gloria a juzgar a vivos y muertos, y lleve
de esta manera a término la obra que comenzó en su primera venida.
Tengamos presente que esta esperanza en la Vida Eterna no nos distrae
ni nos hace olvidar los problemas del mundo sino que nos empuja a
esforzarnos con más intensidad en resolver los problemas que tenemos
planteados los humanos: la guerra y la injusticia, el hambre y la enfermedad, la marginación y la exclusión… y tantos otros que tenemos
delante
En este tiempo de Adviento la Iglesia nos llama a la conversión. Esta
llamada urgente a la conversión y al cambio es el tema más importante
en la historia de las relaciones entre Dios y nosotros. Si Dios viene a
nosotros y entra en comunión de vida con nosotros, nosotros hemos de
estar dispuestos a cambiar. No demos la espalda al Señor ni nos mostremos indiferentes ante su venida. No digas es que yo ya no puedo cambiar… Con la ayuda del Señor podemos cambiar, hacer las cosas a la
manera como nos enseña el Señor...Es tiempo de hacer una buena confesión sacramental en la que confesemos nuestros pecados y recibamos
el perdón de Dios a través del ministerio del sacerdote. No demos la
espalda al sacramento de la penitencia.
Adviento, tiempo de vigilancia, el misterio del Adviento llena todo
el tiempo que transcurre entre la primera venida humilde y pobre de
Jesús en Belén y la definitiva venida en la gloria del Reino de Dios.
Ciertamente Cristo vino, viene y vendrá. “Cristo es el mismo ayer, hoy
y siempre” (Heb.13,8). Él es “el que es, el que era y el que ha de venir” (Apoc.4, 8). Estemos atentos y vigilantes para que no perdamos la
esperanza…
