Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The feeding of the five thousand (and more) by the seaside is certainly the most famous of picnics. The miracle of the loaves reminds us of the earlier miracle of the wine at Cana. Like the Cana miracle, this one begins with human initiative as the small child responds to the hunger of the crowd by offering a seemingly meager gift. What could be more appropriate for deep summer than a Gospel account of a joyful picnic with Jesus and the generosity of a child at the center? The coming month of August has always been a time for delight in the bounty of the earth, for picnics by the sea, dinner under the stars, for porch and rooftop, for parks and beaches, and enjoying the best of local crops. August’s festivals of Transfiguration and Assumption have long given Christians the best of excuses for feasting on the abundance of summer: corn, tomatoes, pesto, bowls of fresh fruit. Picnics are a sign of the welcome table of God: always room for one more, always plenty to share, always a place of laughter and story-telling and always speaking to us of our deepest longings. Don’t let August pass by without a picnic! —Fray Gilberto Cavazos‑Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week (July 22nd –28th, 2012) highlight the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) which articulates Catholic beliefs about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. The dates also mark the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. What is NFP? NFP is a Natural approach to FAMILY PLANNING. A couple who uses NFP understands the biology and theology of the body and can promote or postpone pregnancy. While all children are a gift from God, NFP permits a couple to responsibly limit family size, or postpone pregnancy, while fulfilling a couple’s duties to God, each other, their family, and society. NFP is NOT the rhythm method. Why should we use NFP? NFP is marriage insurance. Couples who use NFP have a divorce rate of less than 5%. NFP is “natural” and has no side affects from artificial hormones. No “barriers” between the spouses. It is completely organic. NFP fosters an increased appreciation for nature, biology, and God’s gift of fertility. NFP unites the spouses and allows them to commit themselves totally and unconditionally to one another without withholding one’s fertility. NFP follows the Magisterium or sacred teachings of the Church. A couple using NFP never excludes God’s creative power. NFP complies with the Divine Law and Natural Law and allows spouses to share themselves in their union with Christ. NFP is reliable. Studies show NFP is 98-99% effective. NFP is inexpensive. It uses no pills or artificial devices. NFP does not cause early abortions. NFP is simple to use and does not disrupt the body’s natural cycles. NFP is the best kept secret to build a long, lasting, and loving marriage. It fosters connection, rather than contraception. NFP helps one plan a family by understanding fertility with fidelity to the Church. For more info, phone: 516-678-5800 • fax: 516-536-3473 • www.drvc-faith.org/nfp.html . Sessions dates, 2012: Sept. 14, Nov. 30. Sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. and are held at St. Aidan in Williston Park. Optional follow-up sessions are available according to the needs of couples. Wed 7:00-8:30 p.m. [email protected] Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel, Jesus supersedes both the apostles’ and the crowds expectations: with little he feeds many…Jesus is the sign of God’s lavish presence and love. TODAY’S READINGS - LECTURAS DE HOY ONE LORD, ONE FAITH Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospels were aware of today’s first reading from the second book of Kings? Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God’s power. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant merely to feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all.
