Staying Healthy
With Your 1199SEIU Retired Members Division
One of the key ingredients of a healthy retirement is staying physically and mentally active, and what better way to
stay active than to do it along with your retired 1199SEIU brothers and sisters?
Many of you have told us that you want more fitness classes through the Retired Members Division, so we’ve added
Tai Chi to our regular class schedule. Tai Chi uses gentle, flowing movements that can help you grow stronger and
improve your balance – preventing the falls that we may experience
more as we age. And because Tai Chi is slow-paced and low impact,
Retiree Fitness Classes
it’s a good exercise option for seniors and for people of all ability
levels. The Tai Chi classes began on Thursday, March 6 and will

Fridays – 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM
from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM. It’s not too late to join now.
In addition to Tai Chi, you can take advantage of our popular yoga
classes from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM on Thursdays and dance classes
from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Fridays. All retirees are welcome to join
us. And if you can’t attend one of these classes, you can still get great
benefits from any type of physical activity you choose. Even a simple
but regular walking regimen will build your muscles and help to slow or
prevent bone loss. Start a walking club with some of the 1199SEIU retirees
the benefits of exercise!

So come on in and try our fitness classes. Learn to move easier and feel stronger just by walking in your
neighborhood. Don’t forget to check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program.
And, of course, continue to enjoy our other classes as well – literature, photography, drama – and the list goes on
and on. For a complete list of Retired Members Division classes, check page 4 of your Bulletin. And if there are any
new classes that you would like to see, just let us know!

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,
As Union members for so many years,
we know how important it is to keep
our minds and bodies active. But it’s
also important to stay active socially
and politically. And in this historic
election year, it’s more important than
ever that we stay active with our Retired Members Division and our Union.
Each month at our Chapter meetings,
we’ll be talking about how you can
get and stay involved, so if you’re
not already coming to your Chapter
meeting, now is the time to start. You
should also keep an eye on your mail
for important information from our
Funds and our Union.
Como miembros del Sindicato por tantos
años, todos sabemos cuán importante es
mantener nuestras mentes y cuerpos en
actividad.
Miembros Jubilados y nuestro Sindicato.
Cada mes, en nuestras reuniones de
agrupaciones hablaremos acerca de
cómo pueden involucrarse y mantenerse
involucrados, por lo que si alguno de
ustedes no ha asistido aún a nuestras
reuniones de agrupaciones, ya es tiempo
de comenzar a hacerlo. También deben
estar al tanto de la correspondencia que
reciban de nuestros Fondos y nuestro
Sindicato con importante información.
Besides important information about
our benefits and our Union’s activities,
each of our Chapter meetings features
a special topic on issues that affect
our lives. In the next few meetings,
we will be talking about some of the
health issues that we need to look out
for in our golden years, from diabetes
to skin care to cancer screenings. And
our monthly General Meetings at the
Retired Members Division focus on a
different topic important to seniors, so
be sure to join us at that meeting too,
on the last Thursday of each month.
Además de brindar información importante
sobre nuestros beneficios y las actividades
de nuestro Sindicato, cada una de nuestras
reuniones de agrupaciones aborda temas
específicos que afectan nuestras vidas. En
las próximas reuniones hablaremos sobre
algunos de los problemas relacionados
con la salud que necesitamos tener en
cuenta durante nuestros años dorados,
desde la diabetes hasta el cuidado de
la piel y exámenes para detectar el
cáncer. Y nuestras Reuniones Generales
Finally, since March is Women’s History month, I urge all of our brothers
and sisters to take time to celebrate
the women in our lives – the mothers,
sisters, wives and daughters – and of
course let us celebrate our retired sisters who helped to build our Union,
as well as our working sisters who are
keeping it a strong and active force.
And remember – come to your regular
meetings so that you can stay as active as you were before you retired. I’m
looking forward to seeing you there.
En solidariedad,
John Perkins

Un Mensaje de
Mitra Behroozi
Executive Director of the 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds
La Directora Ejecutiva del Fondo de Beneficios y Pensiones de 1199SEIU
Dear Retired Member,
Querido Miembro Jubilado
It was such a pleasure to meet so many
of you at our Florida Retiree Banquet this
month. Each year since I became Executive Director, the numbers at our events in
New York City, Florida and the Carolinas
keep growing and growing. Today, more
than 60,000 1199SEIU retirees are enjoying steady pensions and health benefits
through the Benefit and Pension Funds.
We are proud to be providing you with
the retirement security you have earned,
and that you deserve.
y Pensiones. Estamos orgullosos de
proporcionarle la seguridad durante la
jubilación que usted se ha ganado y
que merece.
As you know from the news, 1199SEIU
retirees enjoy a singular package of benefits. Few other workers – even unionized
workers – still have defined pension benefits, and even fewer have health coverage with no deductibles and minimal
co-pays. But 1199SEIU retirees are special, and together with the Union, we’re
fighting to keep it that way. We want you
to know that you can always count on us
to keep you healthy and secure in your
retirement. After all, we only have one
priority – you.
Como ha sido informado y usted ya
sabe, los jubilados de 1199SEIU disfrutan
de un paquete de beneficios único.
Pocos trabajadores, incluso trabajadores
sindicalizados, aún poseen beneficios
de pensión definidos, y todavía menos
poseen cobertura de salud sin deducibles
y con copagos mínimos. Pero los jubilados
de 1199SEIU son especiales, y estamos
luchando junto con el Sindicato para que
siga así. Queremos que sepa que usted
siempre puede contar con nosotros para
mantenerse seguro y saludable en su
jubilación. Después de todo, tenemos sólo
una prioridad: usted.
That’s why I encourage you to take advantage of all the services we offer. Get
involved with our chapters in New York,
Florida and the Carolinas. Take classes
and go on trips through our Retired Members Division. Stay fit with our Tai Chi,
yoga and dance classes. And call us
any time you have questions about your
health or pension benefits. We’re here for
you, and you can count on us.
Sincerely,
Sinceramente,

Navigating Medicare Part B:
How to File Your Medicare Part B
Reimbursement Form with the National
Benefit Fund
Many National Benefit Fund* retirees
who receive health benefits through the
Benefit Fund are eligible for reimbursement
of 50 percent of your Medicare Part B
premium. And since you can only apply
for reimbursement twice a year, make sure
you’re reimbursed in a timely fashion by
remembering to fill out your reimbursement
form accurately!
When filing your Medicare Part B
Reimbursement Forms with the Benefit Fund,
make sure that you indicate on the form the
number of months you are claiming benefits
for, as well as the dollar amount of these
benefits. This is one mistake that many
members make when filing their forms with
us, and it can delay your reimbursement.
The months are listed on the Medicare
Reimbursement Form in Questions 8 &
9 in the boxes labeled January through
December. Simply check off the months/
boxes that you are claiming benefits for
and list the total reimbursement you’re
claiming in the spaces below. You can also
use the same form for your spouse – just
fill out his or her information and include
the Social Security number. If this is the first
time you are requesting this benefit, attach
a copy of your Medicare Part B insurance
card so we can verify the effective date.
If you need a Medicare Reimbursement
Form, you can download it online at
www.1199SEIUBenefits.org, pick one up at a
Benefit Fund office or request one by mail by
calling (646) 473-8666.
Remember this National Benefit Fund
tip and avoid delays in your Medicare
reimbursement!

Staying Healthy with Regular
Cancer Screenings
The Benefit Fund’s Protecting Our Health program urges members to develop a
relationship with their primary care physician and to schedule regular preventive
cancer screenings. Working together with your doctor will strengthen your
relationship and empower you to take control of your health.
In the past decade, more and more people have been successfully beating a
cancer diagnosis – but early detection is key. Preventive screenings are important
because they can help detect cancer in the early stages, sometimes before
you even have symptoms, when treatment can be less aggressive. In fact, the
American Cancer Society recently released an alarming new study that found
that people who are uninsured – and miss preventive screenings as a result –
tend to have more advanced cancers that may be harder to survive when they
are finally detected. But those of you who receive retiree medical benefits should
never have to go through that. Even if you do not receive health benefits through
your Benefit Fund, Medicare also covers cancer screenings. Take advantage of
the regular cancer screenings your coverage provides.
And of course, don’t underestimate the impact that lifestyle changes can have in
helping to prevent cancer. Eating a healthy, low-fat diet, exercising regularly and
quitting smoking can all reduce your risk.
Here’s a list of common screenings and recommendations for when to be screened:
Women
Breast Cancer
• Self breast examination – Every month
• Clinical breast examination – Every year
• Mammogram – Every year after age 40
Cervical Cancer
PAP test – After age 30, every two to three years if you’ve had three normal
Pap tests. After age 70, if you have had three normal Pap tests in a row and no
abnormal tests for 10 years, you do not need to continue these tests.
Men
Prostate Cancer – Digital rectal exam and PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) every
year after age 50
Men and Women
Colorectal cancer – Beginning at age 50 – there are several types of screenings;
check with your doctor about frequency
Skin Cancer – Every year after age 40 – clinical skin examination as part of your checkup
Sources: American Academy of Family Physicians, American Cancer Society,
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Of course this list is just a general guideline. You should always consult with your
primary care physician to determine what’s best for you. To read more about
other preventive screenings for conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes
and high cholesterol, go to the Protecting Our Health link on our Funds’ website

A Message from
George Gresham
PRESIDENT, 1199SEIU UNITED HEALTHCARE WORKERS EAST
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
As you probably know by now, 1199SEIU has thrown its full
weight and energies into supporting Senator Barack Obama for
the Democratic nomination for President. In the previous issue of
the Retired Members Bulletin, we informed you of our endorsement
for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Let me explain.
We belong to the Service Employees International Union
(SEIU). Last fall, when the SEIU leadership—of which we are
part—met to make an endorsement, no candidate received
the support of Locals representing a combined 60 percent
of the membership, which is the threshold for making an
endorsement. As a result, it was left to the SEIU Locals in each
state to endorse.
Many decided to endorse John Edwards. Several endorsed
Barack Obama. We endorsed Hillary Clinton. All three are
friends of our Union and it was a difficult decision but our sister
Locals in New York also wanted to endorse our own Senator.
After John Edwards dropped out of the race, and Barack
Obama won several primary elections and caucuses in a
row in February, SEIU President Andy Stern called upon the
International leadership to reconsider its position. All national
polls indicated that Sen. Obama was the best bet to defeat
John McCain, the presumed Republican candidate.
RETIRED MEMBERS DIVISION
DUES CHECKOFF AUTHORIZATION
Our primary goal for November has always been to end
the rightwing Republican rule that has been so disastrous
for working people, and for our country and the world. A
consensus quickly developed among the SEIU leadership that
we should endorse Barack Obama. We in 1199SEIU did not
want to stand in the way of this decision but, out of respect for
Sen. Clinton, we abstained in the vote.
In the end, there was unanimity that Senator Obama should
receive our endorsement and all of the energies and resources
at our disposal to win the Democratic nomination and, in
November, to win the general election.
We are counting on you, our retired members, to help us lead
the way on this. In the Fall, we will be calling on you to be
involved in the campaign in a major way. In the meantime,
this is a chance for you to help keep our Union strong by
signing up to voluntarily contribute $5 a month as dues. No
$5 is better spent. Thanks in advance for your support.
In Solidarity,
This authorization is voluntarily made and may be revoked at any time. I
understand that I am not required to sign this authorization form and pay
these dues in order for me to receive my pension. This authorization shall
