February 14th: First Sunday of Lent
FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners,
We often lament how the permanence of marriage is watered down by so many nowadays.
This is not only reflected in infidelity and divorce, but also in the personalized vows sometimes proposed for the wedding ceremony: ―I will love you as long as our love lasts….‖
A recent newspaper article provided some refreshing relief. It mentioned how some couples
are now making a conscious decision to proclaim the permanence of their marriage by having, not
physical rings, but rings tattooed on their fingers.
Once you get it, said one groom, there’s no turning back. Sometimes words like ―always‖ or
―forever‖ get inked into the tattoo as well.
A bride said, ―You can’t take it off, you can’t lose it, you can’t put it in your pocket, which some
men do to show the world they’re not married‖.
Then there’s the cost factor: a lot less than traditional jewelry, especially if the couple provides the design.
Of course, if things don’t go happily ever after, the ring becomes a daily, in-the-flesh reminder
of a failed relationship. Removing the tattoo could take four or five sessions ($400 per session) at a
Laser and Skin Surgery Center. That’s part of the cost factor too.
Speaking of the permanence of marriage, today is World Marriage Sunday and an opportunity
for married couples to renew their wedding vows at Mass. We present each couple with a symbolic
token, called the Puzzle of Life. It’s a crystal-clear plastic box containing four chips with symbols of
things all couples want in their life together: a heart standing for love; a dollar sign standing for prosperity; the classic symbol representing peace; and a smiley face standing for happiness. The problem is: the box is needs to be unlocked to get them out.
We’re not talking about a key or combination here, but a simple movement that results in liberating the chips. There are those who will grab the instructions immediately and skip the figuring
out. There are others who will work on this for themselves and take a real shot at solving the puzzle.
The latter group might be a good metaphor for what a lasting marriage is all about.
Anything worthwhile in life takes some time and some effort, and the permanence of a marriage relationship is no exception. Hang in there.

EL RINCON HISPANO
BASES DE UN BUEN MATRIMONIO CRISTIANO
7. Oren uno por el otro. La oración es fuente de poner.
