shot 1954
It seems to me that the issue of Robert
Capa s death should not go unnoted
While on assignment for Life magazine
in Indochina in 1954 he stepped on a
landmine and was killed still holding
his camera The last image in his film
roll captured an open field extending
towards a horizon that he himself
never reached There is an interesting
spatialization of time or temporization
of space that occurs when considering
mine-contaminated land in every
inch of that ground there might be
someone s last instant spread in space
as far as the eye can see If you die you
cease to exist temporally but in the
situation of a minefield it means that
spatially you don t get to go any further
I wanted to take the problem and carry
it on from where he left off

The power of those that use the
human voice as their instrument may
lie in the risks entailed in doing an
uncivilised violence to the founding
rigidities of language There is
something agonising and off-putting
in hearing what sounds like the most
unmediated of musical practices
through which music its hopes for
coherence and meaningfulness are
sorely profiled Such vocalising may not
so much be tending towards language
as withdrawing from it retracting from
social contract

When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker
trees
I like to think some boy s been swinging
them
But swinging doesn t bend them down to
stay
As ice-storms do Often you must have
seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises and turn manycolored
As the stir cracks and crazes their
enamel

insipidity of childhood which disgusts
the sane mind that coarseness of
youth which finds pleasure in scarcely
anything but material objects and
