He calls us to reflect on our own lives and how we have received God’s mercy and how we need to be merciful to others. Jesus takes the story of the Good Samaritan to illustrate what mercy is and to whom we are to be merciful: literally anyone and everyone. We are to be so merciful because God is so merciful, and we are all meant to be like God. For us, it’s not always so easy to be merciful. And by merciful in one sense we mean to forgive, to be reconciled. Thankfully, some of us experience truly terrible and terrifying things. People get horrible diseases and injuries. Others are victims of horrific crimes. The victims of terrible crimes face an extreme challenge to forgive those who have hurt them. On the other hand, the way Jesus illustrates mercy in the story of the Good Samaritan is more in the sense of compassion. Jesus intensifies His teaching by mentioning that the man who helped the other man who had been beaten and robbed was a Samaritan. The Jews and the Samaritans were not on good terms, and generally despised each other. So the mercy and compassion of the Samaritan are compounded. Jesus’ first hearers of this parable would have felt the unexpected shock to learn of a Samaritan who stopped to help a beaten man, when a priest and a Levite had already passed him by. God’s mercy is a mysterious thing. Through it we learn that even God can be vulnerable. In many ways and in many instances it is God who “takes it on the chin” from us. We have all ignored Him, disregarded Him, failed Him, and turned our back on Him. Does God reject us because of it? Does He give up on us? No. When we have trespassed against Him, but afterwards stop, repent and confess, He delights to show us His mercy. None of us would ever want to live in a world without mercy. Instead, we could expect retaliation and vengeance from others we have wronged. God doesn’t retaliate against us when we’ve sinned. He waits patiently for us to come to him in humility and contrition, and then He pours His mercy and grace upon us. Our neighbors are anyone who needs us to treat them with compassion and mercy. The more compassion and mercy we show, the more merciful and compassionate the world will be. Add to the world as much mercy and compassion as you can minute by minute, day by day, year by year. This is our calling from the Lord, and this is our mission in life: to reflect, apply and spread the mercy of God throughout all His Creation. Blessings! Fr. David TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Heed the voice of the LORD. It is something very near to you, already in your hearts; you only need to carry it out (Deuteronomy 30:10-14). Psalm — Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live (Psalm 69) or Psalm 19. Second Reading — All things were created through and for Christ Jesus (Colossians 1:15 -20). Gospel — To be a neighbor, show love by treating others with mercy, as did the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Does your attire express respect and reverence for the sacred mysteries that are being celebrated? Would you consider wearing your church clothes to a job interview? Your ministry as an extraordinary minister is, in actuality, much more important than any interview because it is an encounter with the bread of life come down from heaven. Such an encounter requires a reverent demeanor and appropriate clothing.” Fortunately, only 2 of us left early due to heat exhaustion! We distributed 9319 lbs. of fresh produce and canned goods for a cost of $350. And the $350 is paid for by a grant Peterson Middle School was awarded through the San Antonio Spurs. Towards the end, we shorted some families some items, but we gave them extra at the next day's Food Pantry distribution. We distributed fresh cauliflower, turnip greens, rotting iceberg lettuce, rotini, canned protein (meat and beans), iced tea, fresh bread, and smiles. We planned for 125 families, Loaves and fishes time! PHONE CALL St Vincent de Paul, How may we help you? "I've been out of work 2 months and my unemployment still hasn't come through. We are adding to the library the books of the People of God series from the Liturgical Press. Each is less than 150 pages long, and gives a look at a twentieth century Catholic. John XXIII: The Medicine of Mercy, by Massimo Faggioli is heavy with historical and political accounts, from national, inter-national, and Vatican politics. However, John O’Malley, SJ, Georgetown University, evaluates the volume in this way: “Faggioli has produced the first biography in English based largely on the recently completed edition of Roncalli’s extensive diaries. He is able therefore to trace the external events on Roncalli’s life in a newly reliable way but, more important, also to reveal the pope’s internal journey from a naive peasant boy into one of the world’s most respected and beloved leaders.” Francis: Bishop of Rome, by Michael Collins (second edition) is also heavy with background information about national, international, and Vatican politics. However, the myriad homely details about the years 2013-2015 in the final three chapters make this a entertaining and rewarding summer read.
