Adrián S. Bará’s art practice combines his education and exercise as a filmmaker, his interest for visual narratives and his empirical approaches to everyday situations. His work is generated through the appropriation of visual elements and materials taken from his immediate environment, which are presented as the traces of a story of contemporary reality and are arranged as fragments to compose new narratives. Interested in the processes of everyday life, the artist inserts himself in specific scenarios in order to produce his work from experience, dealing with the images and components that serve as reference to the context and the events he witnesses. It is the dynamism of these encounters what triggers the exercise of narrative re-composition and allows the artist to work with hermeneutical processes. Therefore, Bará has experimented with different formal disciplines within a language strongly influenced by cinematography, configuring a body of work that consist of actions, still and moving images, iconography reproduction, and object intervention. Much of the work by Aldo Chaparro is based in quick physical processes that involve a rather close interaction with the material at hand. Aldo considers the objects resulting from this confrontation with the material a document of evidence (in the same way it would in the case of a crime, a recreation of it) that transformed the material into an art object. Approaching Silence strips all of the luster and varnish from his work developed in the last years and finds Chaparro returning to his roots as a formal scultuptor doing a revision of his previous work from a more meditative standpoint where the gleaming surfaces have disappeared giving way to an introspective interpretation of his last decade as an artist. Born Mexico City April 17 1977. Using drawing as the main medium for his work, Verduzco´s practice deals with the notion and concept of memory and how it creates thought in a world where the over saturation of information stops the urgency for change. Avoiding autobiographical or personal memories and experiences the practice is overtly open to interpretations, visions and critical thought. Verduzco´s work also encompasses a wide range of mediums including sound, video and site specific, always using drawing as the basis of it. The work of Cynthia Gutierrez denotes a constant search to analyze memory at different levels, generating tensions or fissures in pre-established schemes. Her reflections and processes part from situations of conflict; from indefinite, unstable terrains, which vulnerability allows movement in multiple directions. From fragments, she reconfigures images that alter habitual trajectories and destabilize structures offering alternatives that simultaneously operate between reality and fiction. She articulates historical elements from a new posture with distorted chronologies that evidence the impossibility of generating accurate memories and reveal the transience of history. He currently lives and works in New York. Known primarily for his multi-layered paintings of modernist buildings, throughout his twenty year career the artist has nevertheless engaged with a variety of subjects that appeal to him from voluptuous nudes to still lives of Don Q rum bottles. Enoc Perez’s new photo collages engage with social media, appropriation, and the artist’s consistent and inventive search for new forms. Sourcing images from the internet of minimally dressed or nude women, from amateur selfies to more professional photos, Perez adds hand painted and cut collaged forms to both obscure and enhance the picture. The cutout shapes function as censor's marks - thwarting our ability to see the original image in its entirety while making it all the more attention-grabbing and voyeuristic. At the same time the collaged bits make it into a happy game, playful colors and forms replacing a need for more visual information and reminding the audience of the artist’s role in directing and delivering fresh ways of seeing. Enoc Perez’s work belongs to the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Art Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, among other significant institutions throughout the United States. Rodríguez Considering order as an illusion and the measurable as a fiction has allowed Javier M. Rodríguez to question the way the world is understood based on the construction of limits. In this scenario, he highlights the blurred areas within edges and obliterates the frontiers between the disciplinary approaches of his work, including sculpture, photography, drawing and installation. His practice has recently extended to the production of multichannel video-installations. The work of Luis Alfonso Villalobos denounces the vulnerability of collective memory through pictures that sit between documentary records and prophetic predictions. Through collage and the juxtaposition of images, he has set a dystopian imagery that questions the steadiness of the modern historical narrative. Beyond illustrating a state of devastation, the artist deconstructs both the iconography that permeates the tradition of Art and Architecture, and the trails of today’s Mexican identity. Marco Rountree Cruz’s entire career has been built as a practical answer to the question: Who is an artist? What does an artist do? In Marco’s particular case his being self-taught is fundamental to understanding the idea of the artist’s calling. His attention is directed to all kinds of things: small and big, important and trivial, and it is through the mixing and transformation of these things that his practice as a visual artist earns its meaning. In his use of everyday things and materials he intentionally “upgrades” them to transform them into decorative objects. For Rountreee it is indeed the concept of ornamentation what turns a common object or a trivial material into a special one, what brings it out of its natural environment and inserts it into the art field. Drawing has been a human necessity since the age of cave painting. There’s an ancestral connection and romanticism in the middle. Paper and pigments have been used for hundreds of years. There is something organic about drawing, which makes you feel part of the process. There’s a bridge from your mind to your arms to the materials that enable you to create something bigger than yourself. It’s my way of searching for the sublime. In his way of painting, it all starts with the creation of his own mythology, which comes from the experiences and connection to nature that he's had through his life. Castro is influenced by the cultural context and the importance of rituals in his country. Besides a personal point of view, all wild animals already have their own universal roles, archetypes and semiology. For Castro, everything is part of a whole: every animal, landscape or natural phenomenon. Was co-founder and co-director of Liga project, which ran from 2005 to 2010. Received several awards through this project such as: FONCA in its coinversion mode for the printing. The formal aesthetics and syntax of Mario Navarro stand as an alternative reference to certain classes of objects just as words do not « refer » to things themselves in Saussure’s theory of linguistics. Objects and architectures have meanings as points and conceptual significations within an entire system of relations as each and every element evokes an idea different, let’s say, than that of another class of objects in virtue of their literal properties. Navarro also creates a meta-class of language that questions both architecture and the way we look at it but in different terms. Architecture is re-contextualized. The relations between architectures and forms, and more specifically, the decomposition of architectural paradigms (balance, symetry, organization of units and the figure of the architect) are constant interest and exploration in Navarro's ongoing and never final propositions. Pablo Davila's work explores the boundaries between art, experience and perception. "Two-way Drawings" is a straight vertical light projected on the corner of two walls and is reflected in a mirror placed on the floor. The mirror, strategic element of the piece, generates a deep space and a new line of bright light projected into infinity. The initial amazement -after a brief moment of disorientation- is followed by a provocative effect in which the observer tries to decipher what he sees. The tour around the piece achieves a different visual experience every time. The work is related to the space, creating different sensations and effects that change depending on the observer's point of view, always in motion. The tour concludes with the discovery of a unique angle where the two lines converge into one. What finally remains in this process is the experience itself, the way our perception is continuously amplified through the quality and subtlety of light and reflections. The work poses phenomenological questions that deal mainly with visual perception; as the American artist Robert Irwin described in the sense that the observer "look at yourself looking" ("Perceiving Yourself Perceiving"). Pedro Reyes (Mexico City, 1972) studied architecture but considers himself a sculptor, although his works integrate elements of theater, psychology and activism. His work takes on a great variety of forms, from penetrable sculptures (Capulas, 2002-08) to puppet productions (Baby Marx, 2008), (The Permanent Revolution, 2014). In 2008, Reyes initiated the ongoing Palas por Pistolas where 1,527 guns were collected in Mexico through a voluntary donation campaign to produce the same number of shovels to plant 1,527 trees. This led to Disarm (2012), where 6,700 destroyed weapons were transformed into a series of musical instruments. In 2011, Reyes initiated Sanatorium, a transient clinic that provides short unexpected treatments mixing art and psychology. Originally commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Sanatorium has been in operation at Documenta 13, Kassel (2012); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2013); The Power Plant, Toronto (2014), the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami (2014-2015), and OCA, Sao Paulo (2015). In 2013, he presented the first edition of pUN: The People’s United Nations at Queens Museum in New York City. pUN is an experimental conference in which regular citizens act as delegates for each of the countries in the UN and seek to apply techniques and resources from social psychology, theater, art, and conflict resolution to geopolitics. pUN’s second edition took place at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles (2015). The third General Assembly of pUN will take place in December 2015 at the Museum of the 21st century in Kanazawa, Japan. Reyes lives and works in Mexico City. Stefan Brüggemann’s work is driven by post-conceptual practices that combine the media techniques characteristic of the late 60s and early 70s with a bitter response towards the categorisation of aesthetic values. While market-oriented, the artist touches various philosophical discourses (namely post-structuralism and deconstruction) that places his work away from a specific category. The use of text is essential for Brüggemann as he maintains a relationship to counter-cultural tendencies (e.g. the punk ideologies of the 80s) and other forms of international cultural representations. Puddle Paintings is a series of medium-sized canvases (presented in a larger format for this exhibition) that take advantage of the spatial experience and modernist techniques. Distinguishing elements of previous work, such as the use of handwritten words, are combined with the raw application of heavy aluminium paint. Only small bits of the text remain visible while the elements of the rough monochromatic painting are undisguised While it makes a direct reference to abstract expressionism in the application of materials, it challenges the notion of “expression” given by the gesture of the artist’ brushstroke on the canvas. The subordination of each of their parts define an “anti-painting” or “anti-expressive” claim that takes advantage of the same features that have made an expressionistic painting. In other words, as the “New York School” use of abstraction to deliver a specific emotion, Brüggemann uses it to claim the contrary, to criticize painting and to avoid a personal prerogative. As the cliché turns into a trap, the artist’s personality seems more distant in the composition. The purely perceptual discipline awarded by the modernist aesthetics, is put into question by the use of the artistic work as a visual object or more broadly as a spatial experience. With these canvases, the work requires the viewer to go from reading to looking. Their structures become an exploration of the continuities and tradeoffs between conceptual and perceptual logics. Puddle Paintings call for a different kind of visual attention, where the “rematerialization” of the artistic expression challenges the definition of modernist painting. 63 ANÓNIMO MIAMI 2015 64 65 S P O N S O R D O N AT I O N S D O N AT I V O S PAT R O C I N I O S THE MASTERS OF P H OT O G R A P H Y S E R I E S CITLI SCULPTURE The Macallan presents the fifth installment of The Masters of Photography series, a collaboration that highlights the creative genius of master whisky craftsmanship and the master photographer, Mario Testino.
