THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY
This Jubilee Year of Mercy bids us share our own experience of Jesus’ mercy with those on what Pope
Francis calls the “peripheries”—people who feel marginalized, even unwelcome—inviting them to
come home. But with all this mercy, why today’s mayhem? “Do you think I have come to establish
peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). Jesus “breaks down” those
“breakups” in painful detail—parents, children, even in-laws. “Against” appears eight times in five
verses. Jeremiah faced death for bearing witness (Jeremiah 38:4). Can’t we bear at least a small share of the
sometimes merciless cost of sharing mercy? The Letter to the Hebrews warns us, keep your “eyes fixed on Jesus”
and “so great a cloud of witnesses,” lest we “grow weary and lose heart” as we run “the race that lies before
us” (Hebrews 12:1–3). After all, “for the sake of the joy that lay before him,” Jesus “endured the
cross” (12:2). Can’t we endure our small crosses for the sake of sharing mercy? Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc

[Jesus] endured the cross, despising its shame,
and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God.
— Hebrews 12:2
Gospel reading: Luke 12:49-53 Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already
blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is
accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but
rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against
three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her
daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a
daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Brief commentary
“I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” Today we are reminded that the Jesus of the
gospels is truly an impassioned person, with little regard for apathy or indifference. Jesus did not come to domesticate,
numb, sanitize, soften, or tranquilize. Instead, he has come to awaken, ignite, provoke, kindle, inspire, compel, confront,
challenge, and transform. When read today’s gospel in the context of Luke’s whole literary work, which includes the book
of Acts (Luke-Acts), we find that this reference to fire is associated with the Holy Spirit. In Luke 3:16 John the Baptist
proclaims that “the one to come, who is mightier than I will baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” And following
Luke’s gospel we read Luke’s book of the Acts of the Apostles when in Pentecost the Holy Spirit descends “like tongues of
fire” upon all in the house where the disciples were gathered, and empowers them to speak boldly the good news of Jesus
Christ and about Jesus Christ. Their impassioned proclamation, in turn, leads to the baptism of many on that day. In
spiritually-challenged materialistic environments it is possible to be robbed of our imagination, curiosity, and spiritual
restlessness; yet, the Holy Spirit comes to us and “we are kindled with the fire of his love.” This fire fills us with loving faithfilled ardor, fervor, passion, devotion, intensity, boldness. The fire of the Spirit “melts away the chill” of our apathy toward
God and of our indifference toward our neighbor. Divine grace emboldens us and empowers us for mission. Like the
prophets, and especially Jesus, the Spirit of prophecy anoints us to “comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable,” to be
“ambassadors for Christ” proclaiming God’s Word that denounces the sin and evil that destroys the world and announces
the „truth that frees‟, the truth that offers humanity the path toward a more just and compassionate world. This, however,
will naturally lead to discord and division, for it is not always simple or easy to witness the Gospel with our lives in our
world and among those closest to us. The earliest Christians experienced the misunderstanding and the rejection even of
those nearest to them, and it has remained so throughout the centuries. Much like the purifying and transforming effects of
fire, the „fire of the Spirit‟ first effects a profound transformation of our lives, changing our hearts and perspectives, values
and attitudes, choices and way of life; and this naturally often brings both comfort and affliction. Yet, our “witnessing the
truth with love‟ should always be a gift of love toward others that invites them to be transformed by the love of God. Let’s
make Jesus’ impassioned “wish” come true today in our lives by allowing the Holy Spirit to set us “ablaze” and so
collaborate in God’s renewal of “the face [and heart] of the world.”
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:



Jesus’ mission involved “setting the earth on fire” with
the passion of God, with the love that melts away apathy
and indifference, and that transforms our world by
purifying it and renewing it. “Come Holy Spirit, fill the
hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the fire
of your love. Send forth, your Spirit, o Lord, and we
shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the
world.”
The “baptism” Jesus referred to was his upcoming
suffering, death and resurrection. His zeal was to
accomplish the mission that the Father had entrusted to
him.
Jesus’ disciples are to expect misunderstandings and
difficulties on account of following him and living his
Gospel, since this is what Jesus himself experienced.
For our shared or personal reflection:
After a brief pause for silent reflection share your
answers, ideas or feelings.
1. What difference does the fire of the Spirit of
Jesus Christ make, or can make, in my life?
2. Am I passionate about living my mission as a
Christian?
3.
What challenges do I face as disciple of Jesus?

No, sino división.
Jesús no vino a
domesticar, a entumecer, a satinar, suavizar, o tranquilizar.
a confrontar, a retar y a transformar.
2.
¿Vivo mi misión cristiana con fervor e intensidad?
3.
¿Qué retos confronto como discípulo de Jesús?
