Edizioaren helburu nagusia hauxe da, elkarrengandik urruntzen diren arlo materikoen eta digitalen arteko ardatzak lotzea, itxuraz poliedrikoa den obraren hainbat alderdiren gainean 360º-ko panoramika eratuz. Gorputzak, objektuen neurri eta eragile den aldetik, narrazioak pizten ditu, errealitatearen eta fikzioaren arteko elkarrekintza ahalbidetzen du. Esperimentazio bide bat da, euskal sortzaile honen ikerketa eremua taxutzen duten formatuen, arlo artistikoen eta adierazpen espazioen artekoa. This art catalogue covers the period of time from 1998 to 2010, and allows us a glimpse of Juan Aizpitarte’s multidisciplinary work in full. The main goal of this edition is to link the currently divergent axes between material and digital disciplines by plotting a 360º view of a number of aspects in an apparently polyhedric body of work. The body as both measure and trigger of objects activates the narration, smoothing the path for an interaction between reality and fiction. A journey in which to experiment between the formats, artistic disciplines and settings that are home to this Basque creator’s expression. 5 6 7 Pli-PiPe 8 2010 9 10 11 12 Urban Market Gaur 2010 13 14 15 16 Ben Ben 2010 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 Auña /Midi 2010 25 26 27 28 29 30 Transición 2010 31 32 33 34 Belle Époque 2009 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 Laiff 2008 43 44 45 46 47 48 Rebox 2007 49 50 51 52 VACÍO 2006 53 54 55 56 57 58 59 60 FUN BOX 2002 61 62 63 WALL RIDE 64 2001 65 66 Habitación caliente 1999 67 68 SURFACE I 2010 69 70 71 72 HEMEN BAI 2009 73 74 75 76 OVER GAME 2007 77 78 79 80 COMBO 2006 81 82 83 84 oHH YeaHHH 2006 85 86 87 DIVISIÓN PASAIA 88 2005 89 90 91 POLALA 2002 92 TICZAG 2005 93 94 95 96 benidorM benidorM 2005 97 98 99 100 reVoltaVision 2006 101 102 103 104 105 trans 2004 106 107 Video acciones 108 1998 - 2000 109 110 111 112 113 HiGH WaY 114 2010 115 tHe GraY Wall 116 2010 117 Post-bx 118 2009 119 siGnos sobre siGnos 120 2009 121 Marikea 122 2009 123 brote 124 2010 125 126 127 carta crÍtica 128 2001 129 CARA B GROS 130 2007 131 le nouveau musée 132 2000 Obra-katalogoa Catalogación Cataloguing 133 134 BARRUKO ETA KANPOKO ESzENATOKIAK. JUAN AIzPITARTEREN OBRARI BURUz. Elkarrizketaren nozioa da, izan ere, azoka honen gaietako bat eta zenbait bilera, solasaldi eta hitzaldietan aztertzen da, eta baita eredutzat adierazi ere artelanetan. Hauxe da asmoa, bisitarien eta artisten, antolatzaileen, bildumagileen, komisarioen eta parte hartu nahi duen ororen artean elkarrizketa bultzatzea. Elkarrizketaren gaiaren inguruan hausnartu eta idatzi eta gero, eta azokan izan diren horietara bertaratu ondoren, eseri egin naiz Juan Aizpitarteren eskulturei eta instalazioei buruz idazteko. Azken egunotan izan ditudan elkarrizketa ugarien arabera Aizpitarteren obraren muina gonbidapen antzeko bat dela sumatzen hasia naiz. Bere lanak publikoa erakarriz eta elkarrizketan parte hartzera gonbidatuz ateratzen dira argitara, berez artelanarekin ez ezik elkarrekin ere. Konpromiso honen bultzagilea artelan multzo bat da, publikoaren aldetik erantzun zintzoa eskatzen duena. zenbaitetan Minimalismora bideratzen diren hurbilketa estetikoen jakitun, Aizpitarteren jarduna beste gai batzuen inguruan ere garatzen da, esaterako, barnea eta kanpoa, publikoa eta pribatua, edota “errealitatea” eta “artifizialtasuna” aurrez aurre ezartzen dituen ideiak. Gainera, ezaugarri nabarmena da bere obra osoan zerbait negoziatzen ari delako halako sentsazioa. Artistaren keinua kontuan izanik, bere obra eskaintza pertsonal bat balitz bezala aurkezten duela ematen du. Publiko garen aldetik, gonbidapen hori obraren parte dela pentsa dezakegu, esperientziatik zerbait jasotzeko negoziazio prozesuan parte hartzera eramaten gaituen joko bat bailitzan, eta era desberdinetan taxutzen da obretan, baita ikusleengan ere. Auña/Midi (2010) izeneko obra orain arte esandakoaren erakusgarri argia da. Margotutako metalezko xafla batek arbel berde bat gogorarazten digu. Xaflan zehar lerro zuri fin batzuk daude marraztuta, idazketaren gida-lerro antzekoak. Xaflaren formak euskal mitologian garrantzizko ikur den Auñamendi mendiaren profila imitatzen du. Profil hori begien parean agertzen zaigu margolari baten kaballetearen oihartzun den metalezko egitura distiratsu baten gainean. Oraingo honetan, ordea, kaballete formako egitura ez da bere kasa eusten, paretan kontra baizik. Profil topografiko hau, Auñamendi mendiaren sekzio hau, aztertzeko eta xehatzeko xedez kokatu da. Asmo didaktikoarekin dago metalezko kaballetearen gainean ezarria, eta horrek adierazten digu ez duela zertan izan behar zehazki mendiaren sekzio zehatz hau, berez irudi hau. Izan ere, kaballetea euskarri dela, teorian antzera xehatu eta aztertu daiteke mendi osoa. Instalazioak nabarmendu egiten du natura ikonografikoa maila anitzetan hedatzeko, komunikatzeko eta arreta pizteko gai dela. Mont Ventoux mendia gaitzat hartuta Matissek margotu zituen koadro ugariak datozkit burura. Horietan, pintoreak hainbat eta hainbat saialdi egin zituen mendi erreala, den bezalakoa, irudikatzeko, mendiaren esentzia bera jasotzeko beharbada. Era berean, Fuji eta Ararat mendiek ere antzeko tratamendu sinbolikoa jaso izan dituzte. Aire zabaleko gertaera edo ekintzaren bat barrualdera eramatea, edo gertaera hori imitatu eta leku batetik bestera fisikoki eramatea, bestelako eduki kulturala eta soziala duten espazioetara alegia, Aizpitarteren obraren funtsezko ezaugarrietako bat da. Bere aurrenetako obra batean, Fun Box (2002) izenekoan, artistak skateboard pista bat muntatu zuen galeria batean barruan eta skaterrak gonbidatu zituen pista erabiltzera. Era horretan, kubo (kutxa) zuri aratzak balira bezala aurkezten zaizkigun arte galerien zenbait konbentzio zalantzan jartzeaz gainera, zeharo desberdina den publikoarekin harremanetan jarri eta erakarri zituen. Edo beharbada hobe izango ote da jende talde horri parte-hartzaileak deitzea? Bestela, ziurrenez skater haiek ez baitziren galeriara inoiz bertaratu izango. arteko espazioa, espazio iragankorra. Zein neurritaraino banandu daitezke lehendik dauden balio sustraituak espazio fisikoetatik? Eta espazio horiek berriro interpretatu eta baliagarriak izatea espazioari, lekuari eta publikoaren parte-hartzeari buruz izan behar ditugun elkarrizketetarako? Publikoaren eta parte-hartzearen artean eta espazio jakin batzuek ustez bete behar duten funtzioaren aukeren artean ere dagoen hutsunea betetzea Aizpitarteren ibilbide artistikoan zehar aurrera eramaten diren negoziazioetako bat da. Artistak bideoa, eskultura, instalazioa, performancea eta soinua ditu baliabidetzat inpresioak transmititu eta esperientziak sorrarazteko, baina baita espazioak ezartzen dituen mugak aztertu eta zalantzan jartzeko ere. Berriro ere, burura datorkit elkarrizketaren ideia. Bere obrak erantzunak jasotzea irrikaz nahi izango balu bezala, batzuek besteekin hitz egiten dugunean bezala. Hala, komunikatzeko, galderak planteatzeko eta erantzunak lortzeko nahi horrek ematen dio osotasuna artista honen obrari. Donostiako Kontxa pasealekuan zehar eraikitako antzeko egituraren erreplika bat da, ibiltariaren eta ozeanoaren arteko banalerroarena. Barrera funtzioa betez, hesiak balio sozial jakin batzuk (burgesiarenak) gogora ekartzen dizkigu, eta naturaren indarretatik geu babesteko dago hor, kasu honetan hondarretik eta itsasotik. Gainera, Kontxa pasealekuan zehar duen presentziak banandu edo, gutxienez, bereizi egiten ditu ekintza bat eta bestea. Egitura apaingarria izanik ere, kolore zuri aratzekoa, bere jatorrizko testuingurutik atereaz gero, Belle Époque ezgai eta bakarti geratzen da. Baina, kokaleku inprobisatu hori alde batera utzita, zelai zaindu baten gainean ezarrita, egitura apain ageri da oraindik ere, duen ahalmena, ordena inposatzeko lehendik datorkion nahi bizia harro erakutsiz, duen izaera estetikoak nabarmenduta. Orain, hauxe da funtsezko galdera: Nola eraman espazioaren banaketa murriztailea beste batera edo, hobe esanda, beste askoz ere gehiagotara. Har dezagun adibide gisa Laiff Studio (2008), Bilbo Arte-ko bere instalazio bat, Bilbon. Asmamen handiz, artistak etxeko eszenatoki antzeko baten itxura eman zion espazio industrial horri, leka forma duen espazio bizigarri bat izanik. Bisitariak egiturek eutsitako esku-eskailera batzuetatik sartzen ziren gela desberdinetan. zuhaitz batean eraikitako etxetxo bat ematen zuen, edo haurrek jolasteko txabola bat; baina aldi honetan, antza, egiturak bisitarien (gehienak helduak) arreta erakartzea zuen helburu. Laiff Studiok elkarrizketa honetara gonbidatzen zituen bisitariak: Etxekotzat hartzen dugun hori eta lantzat eta jolastzat hartzen dugun hori zertan datzan. Hau galde egiten ariko balitz bezala: zergatik dira definizio horiek hain zurrunak? Kasu honetan, galderak modu fisiko batean planteatutakoak ziren, egitura fisikoki esperimentatzera gonbidatzen baitzuen publikoa. Gainera, Bilbo Arte-ko eszenatoki post-industrialak askatasun ikurra aditzera ematen digu kontraesana tartean dela. Jatorriz xede espezifiko baterako eraikitako ingurune batetik abiatzen da eta askoz ere helburu zabalagoa duen zerbaiten eszenatoki bihurtzen da. Aizpitarterentzat, horixe da espazioaren eta publikoaren arteko elkarrizketa elikatzen duten argumentu ugarietako bat. zer neurritaraino alda dezake asmo zehatz baterako sortutako espazio bat? Nola lortu testuinguru batetik ingurune berriak, baldintza jakin batzuk betetzen dituzten espazioak sortzea, beharbada aurreko muga espazialen barruan ezinezkoak ziren gauzei buruz amets egitera bultzatuko gaituztenak? Helduentzat ere jolasleku bat garatzeak duen garrantziaren inguruan lehendik idatzi izan zuen Donald Winnicott psikoanalista britainiarrak. “Bitarteko espazioa” deitzen zion hark, barruko eta kanpoko errealitateen Irrikaz esperotako elkarrizketa horren oinarriak finkatzen dituen beste artelan bat Belle Époque (2009) izeneko eskultura-instalazioa da. Hemen, hesi antzeko egitura zirkulu itxi bat itxuratuz kokatu da Biarritzeko (Frantzia) parke zaindu batean. Hor egotearekin bakarrik, keinu huts bat balitz bezala, lehen begiratuan obra honek benetan egiteko gai denari uko egiten diola ematen du, eremu bat zehazteari, alegia. Hesiaren estilo dekoratiboa Pli-pipe (2002) izeneko bere eskulturak berriro jartzen ditu zalantzan mugikortasun espazialari eta espazioaren inplikazio eta murrizketei buruz ezarrita dauden ideiak. Obra hau pieza moduan galeria baten barruko espazioan (Torrance Art Museum, LA 2010) eta “arte publikoko obra” moduan kanpoko espazio batean (Arte Eder Museoa, Bilbo 2002) egon zen ikusgai. Skate arrapala bat gogorarazten digu, baina oraingo honetan U formako egiturari koska batzuk gehitu zaizkio eta, beraz, ezinezkoa da bertatik patinatzea. Hala eta guztiz ere, publikoa koska edo maila horietatik igotzera eta eserlekutzat erabiltzera gonbidatzen du. Egiturak antzoki txiki baten funtzioa betetzen du hortaz, eta bertan geu gara, skate arrapalan elkarri begira dagoen jendea, antzeztuko den obra. Utzi dut dagoeneko Ammango hoteleko gela. Azokan izan ditudan elkarrizketetako batzuk nirekin batera daramatzat. Azoka egin deneko espazioaz ari naiz pentsatzen: zentro komertzial bat. Eta nire buruari galde egiten diot ea elkarrizketa horiek berdinak izango ote ziren azoka beste edozein lekutan egin izan bazen. Eta zer gertatu izango ote zen artistaren bati ingurua diseinatzeko eskatu izan bazioten? Eta artista hori Juan Aizpitarte izan bazen? Esperientzia zeharo desberdina sorraraziko zuen? Bere obrak berezkoa du elkarrizketa eszenaratzeko, bultzatzeko eta eragiteko indarra. CECILIA ANDERSSON 135 esculturas / instalaciones escultóricas ESCENARIOS INTERNOS y EXTERNOS. ACERCA DE LA OBRA DE JUAN AIzPITARTE. CECILIA ANDERSSON Sculptures / installations SETTINGS OF INSIDE AND OuT. ON THE wORkS OF JuAN AIzPITARTE. the group of people who most likely would not have visited the gallery otherwise, namely the skateboarders themselves. Having thought and written on the topic of conversation and having attended the dialogues at the fair, I sit down to write about Juan Aizpitarte’s sculptures and installations. In light of the many conversations I’ve had in the past few days, I begin to see the main body of Aizpitarte’s work as invitations. The works manifest themselves by luring audiences in and by inviting them to take part in a conversation, not only with the artwork itself but also between themselves. Bridging gaps between audience and participation and between the expectations of what certain spaces are supposed to deliver are one of the ongoing negotiations taking place throughout Aizpitarte’s body of work. The artist works with video, sculpture, installation, performance and sound to create impressions and experiences, but also to explore and challenge spatial restrictions. Again, the idea of dialogue comes to mind. It’s as if his work insists on responses, similar to when we speak to each other. The urge to communicate, to pose questions and receive answers, unifies his body of work. what triggers this engagement is a body of work that demands an honest response by you, the audience. Being informed by aesthetic approaches that at times make reference to Minimalism, Aizpitarte’s practice also revolves around questions of inside and outside, private and public and about ideas of the “real” versus the artificial. Common to all work is also a strong sense that something is being negotiated. It’s being conveyed by the artist’s gesture that he is presenting his work as something of a personal offering. As audiences you can sense the invitation as part of the work, as a game that means you enter into a bargaining process in order to gain a share of the experience. How this negotiation takes place exactly differs from one work to the other, and from one viewer to the next. A work titled Auña/Midi (2010) constitutes a good example of what I have expressed so far. A metal board has been painted in what reminds of a green chalkboard. Inserted across the board are thin white lines, there as if to assist in the process of writing. The board’s shape imitates the silhouette of the mountain Auñamendi which plays an important role in Basque mythology. The silhouette is resting, at eye level, upon a shiny metal structure making reference to a painter’s easel. Only this time, the easel-like structure cannot stand on its own but is propped up against the wall. This topographic outline, this slice of Auñamendi has been placed like a specimen on display for scrutiny and dissection. Its didactic positioning on the metal easel indicates that it’s not only this specific slice of the mountain, this specific image that will be treated this way. Actually, the whole mountain can, theoretically, be sliced up and processed in a similar manner with the support of the easel. The installation raises awareness that iconographic nature has the possibility to transcend, communicate and engage on multiple levels. Matisse’s many paintings of Mont Ventoux comes to mind, where the painter carried out endless efforts to capture the real, the true, perhaps the essence of the mountain. But also Fuji and Ararat mountains are subject to similar symbolic treatments. Bringing an occurrence or activity from outdoor to indoor, or to physically imitate and transfer such occurrences from one place to another, to spaces that were cultured and socialised differently, is an integral aspect of Aizpitarte’s work. In an early work titled Fun Box (2002) the artist mounted a skateboard rink inside a gallery space and invited skaters to use it. Not only did he hereby question some of the conventions of the art gallery as a pristine white cube (box), he also contacted and brought in totally new audiences. Or perhaps better to call them participants, Take for instance Laiff Studio (2008), an installation at Bilbo Arte in Bilbao. The artist converted this industrial space into something like an inventive domestic setting, a pod-like living space. Visitors accessed various cubicles via ladders propped up against the different structures. Reminding of a tree house, or a hut constructed for children’s play, only in this case the structure was meant to engage, I presume, with adult visitors mostly. Laiff Studio invited its visitors to a dialogue about what is considered domestic and about what constitutes work and play. It’s as if asking, why are these definitions so rigid? The questions were in this case posed physically, since the audience were invited to physically experience the structure. The post-industrial setting of Bilbao Arte does in a contradictory manner also signal freedom. It departs from an environment which initially was purpose-built but that is now the scene for something much more open ended. For Aizpitarte this is one of many arguments feeding his dialogue between space and audience. To what extent can a space that was conceived with a specific purpose in mind change? How can the context be transformed into new environments, into spaces that fill different requests and that perhaps also makes us dream and fantasise about things impossible within previous spatial restrictions? The importance of developing a play area even for grown ups, is something the British psychoanalyst Donald winnicott wrote about. He named it “an in between space”, a space between inner and outer reality, a transitory space. To what degree is it possible to detach existing and ingrained values from physical spaces? And to re-interpret and make such spaces serve as tools for the conversations we need to have about space, place and audience participation? mental structure, once taken out of its original context, looks powerless and lonely. But in spite of this improvised and unrehearsed location, in its placement upon the flawless green grass the structure still flirts with power. with its inherit desire to impose order, something which is radically emphasised by its own aesthetic authority. The real question becomes how we can make the transition from one restraining division of space into another, or rather into many others. Further challenging ideas of spatial mobility and of the implications and restrictions of space is the sculpture Pli-pipe (2002). This work was shown both as a gallery piece in an interior space (Torrance Art Museum, LA 2010) and as a “public artwork” in an exterior space (Museo de Bellas Artes, Bilbao 2002). Its shape makes reference to a skating ramp, only now the u-shaped structure has been fitted with steps making skating impossible. Instead the audience is invited to climb the stairs, alternatively to use the steps as seats. The structure becomes a small theatre where the play is us, the people looking at each other across the skating bowl. I’ve left the hotel room in Amman by now. Some of the dialogues I had at the fair stayed with me. I’m thinking about the actual space where the fair took place, in a shopping mall. I wonder if the dialogues would have evolved in a different manner had the fair taken place elsewhere? And what if an artist had been asked to design the environment, and what if that artist had been Juan Aizpitarte? would that have created a different experience all together? His work has an innate drive that stages, instigates and provokes conversations. CECILIA ANDERSSON Another piece of work setting the tone for this much anticipated conversation is the sculptural installation titled Belle Époque (2009). Here, a fence-like structure has been placed in a closed circle on a piece of minutely maintained parkland in Biarritz, France. Simply by posing, as in an empty gesture, the first impression is that this work is withholding what it’s capable of actually doing, namely to mark territory. The decorative shape of the fence is a replica of a similar structure set up along the Concha in San Sebastian where it serves to distance the flaneur from the ocean. In its capacity as barrier, the fence works as a reminder of certain (bourgeois) societal values and is there to protect us from the forces of nature, in this case the sand and the sea. Also, its presence along the Concha insists on dividing, or at least distinguishing, one activity from another. Belle Époque, in spite of its pristine, white, orna- 137 6-11 138 12-16 Pli-pipe, 2010. zur lakatua. Arte Eder Museoa, Bilbo. Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles. 660 x 240 x 180 cm. This mega miniature is the mental idea of a Maya ritual space that forms a communicating vessel, joining earth with heaven. A fraction of the monument inserted in the corner enables there to be a possible circuit of action and contemplation joined together in the same spot. Skate, as a metaphor between dance and sport, replaces the sacred ritual of sacrifice to the new God of slide and speed. This time where the fluid rhythm connects, draws a public space within a private space, like a theme park dedicated to movement-image. The zero moment point, where acrobatics reside, connects the entire spectacular mechanism. 25-30 Siluetari jarraituz itxuratutako hesi hauek ikono mugakide geografikoak dira, testuingurutik aterata aurkeztuak, aldi berean artifizialtasuna eta natura nahastearren. Laurogeita hamarreko urteen hasieran, musikak bakarrik lagunduta taula baten gaineko piruetak jasotzeko sortutako bideo haiek beste gauza bat bilakatu ziren, asmamen handiko ideia batean oinarritutako ez-istorio laburrak, gag bat edo bideoklip bat ere izatera iritsi gabe. Hala ere, gauza asko sumatzen ziren lan horietan: arkitektura irakurtzeko eta espazio publikoa zeharkatzeko modu alternatibo bat, ez-lekuak bizitzeko, aginteari ezikusia egiteko, narrazioa distraitzeko, denbora izozteko, arriskuarekin dantzatzeko eta interpretatzen bizitzeko. Azken finean, joan den mendean zehar herri kulturak ereindakoa mendearen amaieran gauzatu zen eta hori hirugarren espazioan bizitzeko aukera izan zen batzuentzat, fantasiak, fikzioak eta esperientzia birtualak bitarteko ziren errealitate batean. Hirugarren espazioa Henri Lefebvre filosofoak barneratutako kontzeptua da, ideiatu edo proiektatutako espazioarekin edota esperimentatzen den horrekin, hau da, espazio errealarekin bat ez datorren espazioa adierazteko. Hirugarrena, beraz, espazio mentala da eta bertan esperientzia subjektiboak aurrekoak gurutzatzea ahalbidetzen du. Lynchen trilogia (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire), Los Angelesen kokatua, kondizio horren erakusgarri bikaina da: gertaerak ametsetatik eta desioetatik bereiztea zail egiten den hiria. Adimena banandu, errealitate paraleloak edo ihesbide psikogenikoak sortu ditzakeen hiria. Ez da harritzekoa kontakizunean neurritik ateratako hainbat filmetako (Pulp Fiction, Memento) hiria izatea edota Lynchi eskatu izana Playstation 2ren kanpaina, ‘The Third place’ izenez aurkeztua. Izan ere, hirugarren espazio hobezina dira bideo-jokoak. Fenomeno hau Douglas Couplandek nabarmendu zuen bere egin zuenean X Generation deitutakoa, helduaroan sartzean haurtzaroko eta gaztaroko mitoak eta fetitxeak baztertu behar izan ez zuen belaunaldia. zinea, telebista eta musika bizitzako eskola izango zituen belaunaldia. Subjektibizazio prozesua, mendebaldean ia gehienok sartuta gaudenekoa baina hiriko tribu batzuek, skater, clubber, otaku eta abarrek bereziki ondo aditzera emana, murgilketa, obsesio eta, nolabait esateko, errealitatearen kustomizazioaren adibide, alegia. Jackass (2000) adibide bat baino gehiago manifestu bat da, eta Moulin Rouge (Luhrmann, 2001) ohartarazpen bat: jadanik ez da ezer ere gertatzen pop oihartzunik gabe, soinu-bandarik gabe, pantailek eta abestiek esperanto berri baten antzera eskaintzen dituzten aipu eta erreferentzien elkar nahaste hori gabe, hirugarren espazio honetan berebiziko garrantzia betetzen duela kontuan izanik. Aurretik aipatutako obra horiek bat badatoz erabateko askatasunez eginda daudelako da, ahal den horretara produkzioa egokitzeko gai besteek ezinezkotzat hartzen zutena egiteko, aldez aurreko genero edota formatuetara jo gabe eta etendako arauen narratiba landuz. Hala, sarritan, saiakera, artelana, esperimentua edo kontsumo produktua obrak berak baino gehiago autoreak zehazten du, abiapuntu gisa zirkuitu baten edo bestearen alde apustu eginez, edota ikusleak ere. Gainera, behatzaile garela berriro ere ohartarazten diguten pelikulak dira, ikasitakoa ahazten, inprobisatzen, ezikusia egiten edo konbentzio bisualez osatutako mende bat gainetik kentzen jakin dutelako, baita berriro begiratzen, amateurraren jakin-minarekin eta ikasiaren sofistikazioarekin aztertzen ere. Coppolak iragarritakoak ukitzen al zuen Harmony Korine? Beharbada ez dugu zertan hain urruti joan. Aizpitarteren bideoak xede berari erantzuten diote: esplorazioak, ustekabeak eta erregistroak, errealitateari aurre egiteko, errealitatea arrotz gertatzeko, bikoizteko, logika bortxatzeko eta argumentua sentsazioen azpitik ezkutatzeko. Benidormen ere ez, Benidorm (2005), aurrenetako obra eta kostaldeko populaziora dokumental itxurarekin egindako hurbilketa lana izanik, ezin gara heldu nostalgia, baliabideak, topikoa edo behingo gertaera bitarteko den errealitatea ez den beste batera. Bere lanean mundu digitalari eta bideo-jokoei dagozkien dinamikak errealitatean aplikatuta ikus ditzakegu, esaterako loopak eta travellingak, 360 gradukoak (Plipipe). Era berean, bideo-jokoetan sartzeko aukera ematen digu, joko horiek bahitutako errealitate bat balira bezala jasateko (Overgame, 2007). Bere obra ugaritan skate jarduera da nagusi, zenbaitetan obra laburlaburren motibo, beste batzuetan lan dokumentalen edo sorkuntza eszeniko eta bideografikoen xede. Eta, betiere, kamerak saltoen edo ustekabeen testigantza jaso nahi izatetik urrun, taulak eragiten dituen sentsazioak irrikaz eskatzea helburutzat hartzeko, taula beti bestelako espazioetatik pasatzen den arrotz bat dela ulertarazteko ikuspuntua doituz. Hori bereziki antzemateko modukoa da Ticzag (2005) sentsualean, skater batekin batera 25 minutuko bidaia eskaintzen digun lanean alegia, baina ikuspuntuaren garrantzia Acciones (1998-2002) laburretan ere antzeman dezakegu, murgilketa hipnotiko bat eskaini beharrean minutu bat inguru irauten duten dosietan skatearen bizitasun handiko alderdi ludikoena agerian uzten duten horietan, hemen Jackassera zabalduta, hau da, arrisku praktika desberdinetara (malda on baten aurrean inoiz uzkurtuko ez direnak). Munduak eragiten ez dion mundu honetan, nola ez ba ez dira falta apropiazioak, fakeak eta birkontestualizazioak, Aizpitartek baliabideei egindako parodia eta mendeku gisa ez ezik (Revolta, 2006) erakusgai izan daitezkeen artefaktu gisa ere erabiltzen dituen estrategiak. Hemen Bai (2009) lanak busto mintzodun zaharkitu baten irudia aurkezten zuen ispilu batean txertatuta, parte hartzen ari zen erakusketaren azalpenezko gida eskainiz. Gainerako artistentzat, zorionez, obra ibilbidearen amaieran kokatu zen. Surface (2010) lanean, izara batez estalitako bi pertsona zenbait fase emozional bizitzen ari dira baina ia ezin dugu sumatu zein neurritaraino, hain zuzen ere haien hasperenak eta dardarak ehunak aditzera ematen dituen moduagatik. Berriro ere, guztia erakusten da eta guztia ezkutatzen da. A lie that tells the truth. Hori da hirugarren espazioa eta, izan ere, esperientzia artistikoaren ahalmena: sentsazioak nabaritzeko leku bat errealitatea bizi behar izan gabe. ANDRES HISPANO VídeoS / VIDEOINSTALACIONES LA VIDA EN EL TERRENO DE JUEGO. No cuenta cosas, muestra acciones. A lie that tells the truth. ANDRÉS HISPANO. 145 Videos / installations LIFE IN THE PLAyGROuND. A forty-second video shows some feet walking along the edge of a dune, no more than that. This is the work of Juan Aizpitarte, and its simplicity represents the conscience of a renewed contract with image, to keep it close to experience and feeling. To ensure that images do not only refer to other images. Revolutions often start where they are least expected, and this means from below, in the art world too. In particular, in the world of the moving image, the revolutionary breath of fresh air has often come from those who have the least artistic ambition and prejudice. The strategies devised and used by documentary makers, industrial film-makers, amateurs, advertising agents and journalists have regularly been adopted by artists, who have found their aesthetics and resources to give them new ways to revivify a look. In a famous quote by Francis Ford Coppola, he said that the future of film was in the hands of a kid with a skateboard in one hand and a home movie camera in the other. Regardless of whether the skater aesthetic rules the big screen or not, the fact is that we see and recognise its features all around us, and it has invaded a large part of the contemporary audiovisual world. you have to look no further than Inland Empire (David Lynch, 2006), Honor de Cavallería (Albert Serra, 2006), Finisterrae (Sergi Caballero, 2010), the video-clips by Vincent Moon, Nicolás Méndez or Blu’s animation. what do these works all have in common? And what do they have to do with so-called skate film? Let’s be clear about this, it’s not about this audiovisual concept dazzling out other fields with its creativity. It’s simply that, in this field, the available technology and some important features of the propitious zeitgeist have mutually strengthened each other, from the DIY culture to the echoes of the X Generation. In other words, the determination to work NOw, without prejudices and using available tools. Not only that, but to do so to have fun, not against the world, but using that world as a theatre in which to play out our fantasies, although this entails the need to interpret it in a new way. That’s why skate film does not represent things, it looks at them. It does not talk about things, it shows actions. Hence the city, or reality itself, becomes a playground; adolescence is turned into a chronic condition; and accidents become a celebration of life. Nothing better than a good fall, said Preston Sturges, and this was even better explained by the guys at Boing Boing in their manifesto about the coming of the Happy Mutants: you don’t have to clash with authority; you have to laugh at it. In the early nineties, those videos that were recorded to show twirls on a board, with no decoration other than their music, were based on something else, on small non-stories that were held together by an ingenious idea, hardly a gag, not even a video-clip. But these pieces gave off a lot more than that: they showed an alternative way to read architecture and public spaces, of inhabiting non-places, of ignoring authority, distracting the narration, freezing time, dancing with danger and living the performance. They used any means that reflected their removal from reality: pranks, dressing up, masks, costumes, role play, staged accidents... In short, what popular culture sowed throughout the 20th century, coming to fruition towards the end of that century, was the chance for some to live in the third place, in a world of fantasy, fiction and virtual experiences. The third place concept was coined by the philosopher Henri Lefebvre, re- 146 ferring to that which does not correspond to all things devised, planned or even experimented, all things real. The third place is, therefore, a mental space in which subjective experience makes it possible to interweave all that has gone before. Other thinkers have developed, adapted or made the idea their own, such as Edward w Soja, who has found the perfect third place in Los Angeles: the dream factory where you can build your life to meet your fantasies, in which nothing is false if it is in the name of desire or the sacred right of the pursuit of happiness... It is there in the film star clones in L.A. Confidential (Hanson, 97), The Truman Show (weir, 98) or the thousand and one nights or European-inspired frenzied architecture that we see in Mulholland Drive. Lynch’s L.A. trilogy (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire) perfectly represents this condition: a city in which it is hard to distinguish the facts from the dreams and desires. A city in which the mind can break away, create parallel realities or psychogenic fugues. It’s hardly surprising that this city has been the stage for so many films of chaotic tales (Pulp Fiction, Memento), and it also comes as no surprise that Lynch was commissioned the Playstation 2 campaign, presented as ‘The Third Place’. Videogames are, in effect, an ideal third place. Douglas Coupland drew our attention to this phenomenon when he assumed the expression X Generation to refer to a generation that felt that coming of age did not mean you had to sacrifice the myths and fetishes of your childhood or adolescence. A generation who made film, TV and music their school of life. A path of subjectification in which almost all of us in the west walk, but which is particularly well represented by some urban tribes, such as skateboarders, clubbers, or the otaku... all examples of immersion, obsession, or indeed, customisation of reality. Jackass (2000) is a manifesto, more than an example, and Moulin Rouge (Luhrmann, 2001), is a warning: nothing happens now without pop reverberations, without a soundtrack, without the puréed quotes and common references that the screens and songs throw up, like a new type of Esperanto, and which, in this third place, fulfils a seminal function. what the above films have in common is that they are all made with absolute freedom. They have been able to adapt their production to make possible what the others believed was not possible, without sticking to genres or pre-established formats, and with a narrative of suspended rules. At this point, often what is a trial, an artwork, experiment or consumer product is not set by the work as much as the author, who opts for one circuit or another as his or her starting point, or the viewers themselves. These are also films that raise our awareness as observers, because they have managed to unlearn, to improvise, ignore or detach themselves from a century of visual conventions, and they have seen with new eyes, exploring with all the curiosity of an amateur and all the sophistication of the learned. Could Coppola’s prophecy refer, perhaps, to Harmony korine? Maybe there’s no need to look that far. Aizpitarte’s videos have the same vision: exploring, accidents and reports are all used to take on reality, surprise it, copy it, violate logic and bury the argument under a wave of sensations. Even Benidorm, Benidorm (2005), an early work and an apparently documentary way of approaching the coastal population, wasn’t able to give us access to a reality other than that which is mediated by nostalgia, the press, stereotypes and anecdotes. In his work, you can see how the very dynamics of the digital world and videogames are applied to reality, for example, using loops and 360 degree travellings (Pli.pipe), in the same way as you can enter into a videogame and suffer as if it were a kind of kidnapped reality (Overgame, 2007). Skateboarding plays a central role in many works, sometimes in very short works and other times as the objective of documentary pieces or of stage and videographic creations. In all cases, the camera shies away from merely recording jumps or accidents, and instead focuses on the magical mix of sensations that a board can bring, adapting the viewpoint so as to understand that the board is always a stranger gatecrashing places to which it wasn’t invited. This is particularly noticeable in the sensual Ticzag (2005), in which we travel with a skateboarder for 25 minutes, but we can also appreciate the importance of the viewpoint in the short videos, Acciones (1998-2002), which use clips of barely a minute, not to immerse us hypnotically in that world, but to reveal the most intense and fun aspect of skateboarding, extended here Jackass-style to different risk practices (that can never resist a good slope). In this world-resistant world, there is obviously a space for appropriations, fakes and recontextualisations, strategies that Aizpitarte uses not only as a parody or revenge of the means themselves (Revolta, 2006), but as an exhibition device. Hemen Bai (2009) showed the image of an obsolete talking head embedded in a mirror, offering a narrated guide of the exhibition in which he was taking part. Fortunately for the rest of the artists, the work was located at the end of the exhibition. In Surface (2010), two people covered in a sheet go through various emotional states, the intensity of which we can barely appreciate in the way in which the material reflects their shivers and sighs. Once again, everything is shown, and everything is hidden. A lie that tells the truth. That’s the third place, and, in fact, the power of the artistic experience: a place where you can feel things without having to experience reality. The childlike aesthetic creates the sensation of a dramatic gulf at each turn the characters simultaneously make. The wall as a visual frontier icon provides for the eternal game of circular ritual. EDIZIOAK BIEN-BITARTEAN. 114-115 Sortze lanaren metodologiak in situ prozesuak, tailerrak, edizio digitalak eta legezko markazio irteerak eskatzen ditu, lanaren osagai bilakatzeraino. Aldi berean bai gorputz esperientziatzat bai adimenak jasotako iruditzat har daiteke obra. Hala, zenbait konbinazio agertzen dira, ikuslea jokoan parte izatera bultzatuko dutenak. Izan ere, ikuslea izango da osotasunaren eragile eta osagai. Seriearen ideiaren aurka sortu izandako guztia elkartzeko zereginean, ibilbidean zehar, lotu egiten ditut ezkutuan eta inkontzientean dauden hari narratiboak denbora errealean agerian uzteko. Batetik, mugimenduak materiarekin duen erlazioa birtualtzen du; bestetik, plastikari lotutako behar batek objektu xumeak egitea eragiten du, artisautza arloko diziplinei helduz. Orain arte tresnatzat hartuta dokumentazio lanak zirena, esaterako argazkia edo edizioa, produkzioan nabarmentzen hasia da obrarekin berarekin uztartzeko. Estetikaren eta prozesuaren arteko oreka bilatzeak markatzen du plastika arloko ikerlanaren bidea, etapa bakoitzean edukiaren eta edukitzailearen arteko ziklo bat ixten dela aurkitzean. Publikoak obrarekin denbora errealean erreakzionatu, obra eztabaidatu eta suspertu ahal izango du. JUAN AIzPITARTE 153 EDICIONES 114-115 INTER-MEDIO. High Way, 2010. 16 pliegos, A3. 10 unidades fotocopia color. EDITIONS INTER-MISSION. 114-115 The methodology of creative work requires on-hand processes, workshops, digital editing and legal marking, which are all incorporated into the work, forming an intrinsic part of that work. The artwork can be perceived as a body experience and a mental image at the same time. So combinations appear that draw the viewer into the game, where he or she will be both the trigger and part of everything at the same time. In the task of grouping all that had been conceived against the serial idea, the hidden and unconscious narratives come together to be visualised in real time. The relationship between the creative process and the final artwork is expanded in order to understand the way to go forward as a system of complete phases. On one hand, the movement virtualises the relationship with the subject matter; and on the other hand, there is a plastic need that leads to making simple objects linked to artisan fields. what, to date, had been documentation works in the form of tools, such as photography or editing, now begins to gain importance in their production, keeping close links to the work itself. A photographic edition in poster format, presenting the first impressions of the HEC Paris university campus. The narration of independent sheets makes it possible to have a range of readings that can also be altered. It includes the site’s particular domestic details and architectural compositions. A hidden fortress in the densest part of the forest. A relentless romance between the wild and the civilised. High way, 2010. 16 sheets, A3. 10 units color photocopy. The search for a balance between aesthetics and process paves the way for plastic research, finding the closure of a cycle between content and vessel at each stage. In productions, the graphic format is soaked in the emotion of the first prototype. The model, the printed edition or the 3D drawing channel the internal relationships of each job, and they are decisive in achieving the process. The creative development, the intermediate stages, all start with an initial impact with reality. From this arterial journey, the need to research and experiment in the process is born. This intellectual perspective exercise makes up the image of the main body of the work, and consolidates a new text-image relationship with a panoramic dimension. The editions assess the strength and possibility of the research topics, harbouring chance and error within their possibilities. It functions as an exercise confronting the first audience who may react in real time with the work, questioning and revivifying it. JuAN AIzPITARTE 155 116-117 The Gray Wall, 2010. Juan Aizpitarteren obra bideotik eta instalaziotik abiatzen da batik bat, hainbat estrategia eta arlo artistikoren atzetik (performancea, serigrafia, soinua, eskultura, bideoa eta argazkia) agertuz eta ezereztuz. Ekintzaren eta errepresentazioaren mugakide, politika sozialen eta masen estetikaren eremuetan barrena sartzen da. Bere azkeneko lanetan jokoa nagusitzen da komunikatzeko modu gisa, publikoa bere obren osagai bihurtuz. Hiriko lurraldeak ikertu eta haietan esku hartzen du espazioan bertan eta gainean ekintzak aurrera eramanez, aktibismo sozialetik eta hedabideen interbentziotik aztergai den mundu garaikideari buruz gogoeta egiteko. Bere lan bideografikoetan, berriz, gai horietatik aldentzen dela ematen badu ere, jarrera barnerakoiago batetik heltzen die, baita ironia fina darion noraeze existentzialaren jarreratik ere. 162 Exposiciones destacadas 2010 “The Rise of Rad”, Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles. At the same time, amid alternative methodologies and an incessant nomadism, his way of working gradually led to formulas of appearance, display and disappearance. Frontiers, limits and identity become embraced with the intermittence of the journey. using a conceptual, abstract strategy, designs his projects in the movement on the ground. As part of this process, he moves away from the sculpture in question, away from the studio, and immerses himself in video. This becomes his place for thought, stage set, performance, temporality and rhythm. Apart from his artistic production work, he also manages and promotes cultural projects encouraging citizen participation and activism. He has been the driving force behind the artistic association Línea Curva in San Sebastian, which he also directs, and which sets the network of collaboration points, fundamentally in the Atlantic axis. Juan Aizpitarte Donostia-San Sebastián, 1974 He began his studies at the Fine Arts Faculty in Lejona (university of the Basque Country), specialising in Sculpture, and in 1998 he graduated from the École Nationale Superieure de Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux (France). That same year he started collaborating with the Asociación zebra 3 on the Buy-Sellf Catalogue, followed by the Permanent Food magazine in 1997. 164 Selected exhibitions 2010 “The Rise of Rad” Torrance Art Museum, Los Angeles. Juan Aizpitarte’s work is essentially based on video and installation, appearing and disappearing behind different strategies and artistic disciplines, such as performance, screen printing, sound, sculpture, video and photography. with cross-border action and representation, his work enters into the areas of social policy and mass aesthetics. Play has taken on an important communication role in his most recent works, introducing his work to the public, and bringing them into his art. He researches and intervenes in the urban territory through action in and on urban spaces, which enables him to rethink the contemporary world in question, from a social activisim and media intervention perspective, while his videographic work (after what appears to be a certain reserve) introduces these questions from a more introspective position of a kind of existential drift, bathed in subtle irony. 7th Leandre Cristòfol Biennial of Art at the Centre d’Art la Panera, Lleida.
