Cryl-A-Flex Ventilation Guidelines Every application of Cryl-A-Flex (MMA) products requires some type of ventilation. The purpose of ventilation and air movement during an MMA application is: • To keep the vapor concentration below the max. OSHA exposure limits of 100 ppm. • For odor control. • To assist (remove the vapor from the surface) in proper material cure. The best way to accomplish this is to set up a Negative Pressure Ventilation (NPV) system that sucks the air out of a room verses positive pressure, which blows air into a room. With negative pressure NPV with smooth bore tubing. it is easier to control the volume of airflow, direct the exhaust and maintain proper working time for the material. The exact amount of air exchanges for a particular application is a function of the odor sensitivity in the work area and adjacent areas of the installation. For example, a restaurant kitchen floor in a mall will require more air exchanges per hour because of the odor issues to adjacent businesses than might an isolated new construction building. This could also be an application for the use of a product such as Nu-Air Odor Adsorbent. The next consideration in proper ventilation is to understand where the exhaust vapor is going. It is necessary to survey the area into which the exhaust will be expelled. Are there intake ducts for the building, does it point to a congested area, will it effect a neighbor or will the concentration build up due to a physical barrier or low spot? Smooth bore polyethylene tubing used in conjunction with the proper fan is very effective for directing and exhausting vapor. The number one item to achieve negative pressure is to have the fan properly installed and sealed so Fan mounted in doorway and totally that the air will be drawn from sealed around door jam. the farthest point and not short cycled aroundtallythe fan. Next is to control the draw, the amount of air coming into the room. Too large an opening or too many openings will not yield the desired directional airflow and odor control. When setting up ventilation it may be best to close everything and adjust the degree of air movement by opening a door at the farthest point. Opening the door 6 inches may give better results rather than having it wide open. Also be aware of potential stagnant air areas, corners, low spots or dead ends. The problem here is the MMA vapor will remain on the surface of the freshly applied material. This can stop the wax rising to the surface and result in the material not curing. The fix for this is to make sure these areas have airflow after the material is applied. Too much airflow during the placing of the material can shorten the working time. Remember the motors used to power the fans must be explosion proof and properly grounded.
