Fourth Sunday of Easter

SAVED BY THE ONE WHO WAS REJECTED
Some city teenagers often scorn and reject
farm kids. Yet it’s no exaggeration to say that humanity owes its life to farmers who care for the
world’s crops and livestock. This week’s scriptures
remind us that Jesus was as rejected as a shepherd, a
farm boy, yet we owe our very lives to him.
In this Sunday’s reading from the Acts of the
Apostles Peter tells the people that salvation comes
through Jesus Christ, the one who was rejected. In
John’s letter we hear that we have become God’s
beloved children through Jesus, whom the world did
not know. Lastly, in the Gospel Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who “lays down his life
for the sheep” (John 10:11). Will you join Jesus in
laying down your life for God’s beloved flock?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Most languages take the name for this fiftyday season from the Lord’s Passover: Pasqua in
Italian, Paques in French, Paach in Dutch, Pascha
in Greek and Russian. English has a much newer
name: the name of a pagan goddess, Eoster. For
centuries before Christianity took hold, in both Germany and Britain, the spring equinox was dedicated
to her and the concepts of fertility and rebirth. She
was said to be a playful spirit, following the Sun
King’s chariot, and ending the reign of winter. She
had a magical companion, a rabbit who hid eggs in
the fields to coax plants and animals to rebirth. It
was believed that Eoster once came across a bird
with broken wings and saved it by turning it into a
rabbit—an egg-laying rabbit at that! Although they
were baptized, most people didn’t take to the new
Latin name (Pascha Domini) too easily, and kept
calling the spring equinox by the old accustomed
name. For good measure, they kept a pagan name
for Christmas, too: Yule.

SALVADOS POR AQUEL QUE FUE
RECHAZADO
Algunos adolescentes de la ciudad suelen
menospreciar y rechazar a los chicos del campo. Sin
embargo no sería una exageración decir que la
humanidad les debe la vida a los agricultores que
cuidan los cultivos y el ganado por todo el mundo.
La Sagrada Escritura para esta semana nos recuerda
que Jesús fue rechazado como pastor, como chico
del campo, sin embargo a él le debemos la vida.
En la lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles
de este domingo, Pedro les dice a las personas que
la salvación viene por Jesucristo, que fue rechazado
y crucificado. En la carta del apóstol san Juan
escuchamos que nos hemos convertido en los hijos
amados de Dios por Jesús, a quien el mundo no
conoció. Por último, en el Evangelio Jesús se
describe como el buen Pastor: “yo doy la vida por
las ovejas” (Juan 10:11). ¿Te unirás a Jesús para dar
tu vida por el rebaño amado de Dios?

LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura — Sólo en Jesús encontrará el
mundo la salvación (Hechos 4:8-12).
Salmo — La piedra que desecharon los arquitectos,
es ahora la piedra angular (Salmo 118 [117]).
Segunda lectura — Nos hemos convertido en hijos
de Dios por el amor que el Padre nos tiene (1 Juan
3:1-2).
Evangelio — El Padre ama a Jesús, el Buen Pastor,
que da la vida por sus ovejas (Juan 10:11-18).

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Imágenes antiguas de Cristo lo mostraban
como un pastor joven cargando una ovejita en sus
hombros. Él mismo se presenta como El buen Pastor (Juan 10:11). Esta imagen que nos conforta con
el amor de Cristo, es en realidad una imagen radical.
Hay que saber dos cosas sobre el pastor palestino de
aquella época: 1) los pastores eran considerados
sucios, peligrosos y ladrones, y 2) cuando cargaban
una ovejita era porque ellos mismos le habían quebrado la pierna.
¿Porque Jesús se describe como uno de ellos?
Jesús ve más allá de las apariencias y los estereotipos, y se asocia con aquellas personas que la sociedad de su tiempo odiaba y marginaba. Por voluntad propia decide estar entre los pobres y despreciados. Si Jesús viniera a la tierra en nuestro tiempo,
se describiría a sí mismo como el buen inmigrante.
En cuanto a la ovejita sobre el hombre: en
casos extremos, de ovejas rebeldes que se alejaban
del rebaño, los pastores tenían que quebrarles la
pierna para cargarlas sobre los hombros. De esta
manera las amansaban para que no se alejaran de él.
Dios no hace esto en nosotros, pero tampoco nos
evita el sufrimiento. Antes bien, nos ayuda a llevarlo de manera heroica, como lo hizo con el santo
Job.
