Jesus addressed this
parable to those who were
convinced of their own
righteousness and despised
everyone else. “Two
people went up to the
temple area to pray; one
was a Pharisee and the
other was a tax collector.
The Pharisee took up his
position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank
you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy,
dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast
twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But
the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even
raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O
God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went
home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself
will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”

Each Sunday this month a different
virtue of Christian life and discipleship has
been offered to us from Luke’s gospel:
faith, gratitude, perseverant prayer, and
today we hear the Lord’s call for
humility before God and others. Luke’s
introduction to Jesus’ pa rable tells us he
addressed it to “those who were
convinced of their own righteousness and
despised everyone else.” The two figures
of the parable could not be more starkly
different. Self-righteousness fools only the one who adopts such
a self-deceptive perspective and attitude. Moreover, it reveals
that such a person’s orientation is toward self and not toward
truth or God. It is therefore not only a matter of the mind, it is
also a matter of the heart. Typical of self-righteousness is listing
the ways one is good and the evil that one has avoided, such as
the Pharisee in the parable does. On the other hand, humble
persons realize how short they fall from their human potential
for good, and how much in need they are of God’s mercy in their
lives. They likewise are aware that they cannot judge others,
since they do not have all the information about others. In fact,
they try to see the good in others or give them the benefit of the
doubt. In the parable, we do not find the humble person saying
anything about the Pharisee. At the same time, the humble
person in no way excuses evil. To drive the point further, the
parable – using the religious figure of a Pharisee and the typically
despised figure of a tax collector – shows how appearances can
be deceptive, and how the ones you would least expect are truly
righteous or merely self-righteous. But God knows the heart and
justifies/vindicates the humble. Humility is honesty before truth.
It is not a false guilt or self-loathing. Humility is an outcome of
genuine love for oneself, others and God. (And as to Pharisees,
they are often portrayed in the gospels in an unfavorable light,
but we know from the gospels that there were Pharisees who
were attracted to Jesus and his mission, and some became
Christians. And history shows us that Pharisees in general were a
religious party that offered important pastoral support to the
people as they sought to live according to the Law of the Lord.)

Festival 2013
All Saints Day—November 1st—Holy day of Obligation this year
Mass at 6:30 p.m. in the Church
Solemnity celebrated on the first of November. It is instituted to honor all
the saints, known and unknown, and, according to Urban IV, to supply
any deficiencies in the faithful's celebration of saints' feasts during the
year.

Esta es una solemnidad que se celebra el Primero de Noviembre. Fue
instituida para conmemorar a todos los Santos—conocidos y

The theological basis for the feast is the doctrine that the souls which, on
departing from the body, are not perfectly cleansed from venial sins, or
have not fully atoned for past transgressions, are debarred from the
Beatific Vision, and that the faithful on earth can help them by prayers,
alms deeds and especially by the sacrifice of the Mass.

Evangelio de la Semana
Lucas 18:9-14
En aquel tiempo, a
algunos que,
teniéndose por justos,
se sentían seguros de sí
mismos y despreciaban
a los demás, dijo Jesús
esta parábola: “Dos
hombres subieron al
templo a orar. Uno era
fariseo; el otro, un
publicano. El fariseo,
erguido, oraba así en
su interior: “¡Oh Dios!,
te doy gracias, porque no soy como los demás: ladrones,
injustos, adúlteros; ni como ese publicano. Ayuno dos veces
por semana y pago el diezmo de todo lo que tengo.” El
publicano, en cambio, se quedó atrás y no se atrevía ni a
levantar los ojos al cielo; sólo se golpeaba el pecho, diciendo:
“¡Oh Dios!, ten compasión de este pecador.” Os digo que éste
bajó a su casa justificado, y aquél no. Porque todo el que
se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.”
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
• La auto-rectitud (ser justos en su propia opinión) es el otro
lado de la moneda de el auto-desprecio; las dos actitudes
mienten y se cierran a la verdad.
• La humildad es la apertura a la verdad y al amor. Es
el reconocimiento de nuestra dignidad y de nuestra
pequeñez, así como nuestra necesidad de la misericordia
divina.
• No debemos juzgar al prójimo de una manera u otra, sino
tratar de ver el bien en ella/en el.
Reflexión Dominical
Cada domingo de este mes se nos ha propuesto una virtud para la vida y discipulado cristiano desde el
evangelio de Lucas: la fe, la gratitud, la perseverancia en la oración, y hoy oímos al Señor llamar por la
humildad ante Dios y ante el prójimo. Para introducir la parábola de Jesús, Lucas nos informa de que Jesús se
la dirigió “se sentían seguros de sí mismos y despreciaban a los demás.” Las dos figuras de la parábola no
podían ser más radicalmente diferentes. La auto-confianza y auto-rectitud engaña solamente a los que
adoptan esta perspectiva y actitud receptiva. Es más, revela que la orientación de tal persona es hacia sí mismo
y no hacia la verdad o hacia Dios. Es entonces no solamente una cuestión de la mente, sino también un asunto
del corazón. Típico de la auta-rectitud es la enumeración de las maneras en que uno es bueno y del mal que uno
ha evitado, así como el fariseo en la parábola de hoy enumera. Por un lado, las personas humildes reconocen
sus fallos a la luz de su potencial humano por el bien, y así reconocen lo cuanto necesitan de la misericordia
divina en sus vidas. Por otro lado también reconocen que no pueden juzgar a los demás, sabiendo que no
poseen toda la información sobre los demás. De hecho, ellas tratan de ver el bien en los demás y les dan el
beneficio de la duda cuando posible. En la parábola no oímos el humilde refiriéndose del fariseo. Al mismo
tiempo, la persona humilde no excusa el mal. Para hacer su punto más pronunciado, la parábola – usando la figura religiosa de un
fariseo y la figura típicamente despreciado de un colectador de impuestos – enseña de que las apariencias pueden mentir, y momo los
que menos esperamos que sean verdaderamente justos lo son, y los que algunas veces los que esperamos que sean solamente lo
aparentan. Pero Dios conoce nuestro corazón y justifica/vindica al humilde. La humildad es honestidad antes la verdad. No es un
falso sentido de culpabilidad o un auto-desprecio. La humildad nace de un amor autentico de sí mismo, del prójimo, y de Dios. (Y
hablando de los fariseos…son tantas veces describidos en los evangelios en una luz tan desfavorables, pero sabemos por los evangelios
de que había muchos que eran atraídos a Jesús y a su misión, y algunos llegaron a ser cristianos. Y la historia demuestra que los fariseos
en general eran un partido religioso que ofrecía apoyo pastoral a las gentes que buscaban vivir de acuerdo a la Ley del Señor.)
