Dear Parishioners,
“Mom why are carrots orange?” “Because that is the way God made them.” “OK” said Susie only half accepting her moms answer. “Mom why do we put onions in the pot roast, I don’t really like onions?” Suzie’s
mom said patiently, “because your father and I do like them and you don’t have to eat them if you don’t like
them honey.” “Ok mom.” A split second later, Suzie asked, “Mom why do we cut the roast in half?” Suzie’s
mom became a little short and snapped back “because that is the way we have always done it!” In an attempt
to sooth Suzie’s apparent bruised feelings she said to Suzie, “When I was your age and grandma showed me
how to make a pot roast, she told me to cut it in half. I am not sure why we do it, let’s call her and ask.” So
they called and grandma told them she was not sure why they cut the roast in half but that is the way her mom
had showed her when she was a little girl. She said she would call her at the nursing home and ask her about
it. She hung up with her and called Suzie’s great grandmother and said Suzie wanted to know why they cut
their roast in half. The great grandmother began to laugh on the other end of the phone and said, “I cut my
roast in half because my pan is to small to put the whole roast in one piece.
Sometimes we do things because that is the way we have always done them. And sometimes we think certain
things because it is the way we have always thought about them. This may be the case with this Labor Day
weekend. How do we think about Labor Day? What do we think about Labor Day?
Labor Day used to be a big holiday. Now it is a day used as a reference point to remind us that the summer
season is coming to an end and that school is beginning; that life is returning to "normal". Americans have
celebrated Labor Day weekend since 1882. From picnics and parades, to fireworks and barbecues, thousands
of people every year take time to relax and recreate. While every working person in the nation knows that Labor Day means a day off from work, most may not know the history behind it and why it is a national holiday.
And for Christians, celebrating Labor Day should mean much more than honoring the workers of America.
Labor Day was instituted as a national holiday on June 28, 1894, a day set aside to honor the working men,
women and children who were the industrial foundation of America. But the concept of an official day off of
work began long before Congress voted it into existence.
For the Christian, a day of rest began at Creation: "And on the seventh day God ended His work which He
had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work." (Genesis 2:2, 3) This day of rest was of
such importance to God, that He established it as part of His law: "Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant -- for in six days the LORD made the
heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." (Exodus 31:15-17)
God created the heavens and the earth, birds of the air and beasts of the field. Every living thing seen today
originally was created by God. But the scriptures teach that God does not sleep nor does He need rest, yet He
chose to set aside a day to rest from His work. He did so as an example for all of mankind to follow. This day
of rest is meant to be a time of refreshing, of looking over accomplishments and either enjoying the results or
seeking ways for improvement. God, upon His day of rest, looked over everything He created said it was good.
His work was complete. Unfortunately, this is not the case for workers today. There will always be more work
to finish.
As we celebrate this Holiday weekend, here are some thoughts to ponder:
What work has God gifted me for? What is my attitude about my work? Do I recognize God’s presence in my
work or work place? Do I consider my work holy or sacred? How can I live my faith better at work? Do I live
out the gospel values at work?
God Bless Us all

The
Psalms are the oldest
prayers in the Judeo-Christian
tradition. They are a lexicon of the
human condition-assuring us that our
hopes and fears and desires are just
like the rest of humanity's, and that
God is with us always. Joan
Chittister, in her book "The PsalmsMeditations for Every Day of the
Year," provides a favorite Psalm
for each month and provides a
reflection for each day so that the
prayer can become a benediction
that pulsates in out hearts. It will
bring your heart the comfort of the
ages. Available in the Prayer section

High School Highlights
We are proud to
announce that Dr.
Christine Kalkavage
was awarded with the
2015
Teaching
Excellence Award from
the Archdiocese of
Baltimore. Just prior to
our opening day of school, our
faculty and staff attend the
Archdiocesan Convocation, held in
Baltimore, with several thousand of
their Catholic school colleagues. At
this event, Dr. K received this award
from Archbishop Lori. Less than ten
teachers in the Archdiocese were
honored with this distinction.
Congratulations, Dr. Kalkavage!
The first few weeks have been
busy with events such as the PFA
sponsored Freshman and Transfer
Parent Evening of Orientation, a
college application boot camp for
senior students, the Back to School
Night for our parents to meet the
teachers, and the opening school
Mass in Carroll Gardens, all of which
were very successful. We instituted
a new tradition for our student
athletes. A Mass was held at St.
John Neumann for all of the Fall
Athletes and Coaches. Following the
Mass, Fr. Andy blessed the field and
a reception was held in Seelos Hall,
sponsored by SMAA. The prayers
and blessings will go a long way as
our athletes strive to succeed on the
field of play. We hope to see you at
our Parish Picnic on Sunday,
September 13th from 1:30 – 4:30
pm. Mrs. Mindi Imes, our Principal,
will be there as well.

A Message from Fr. Tizio - News to Share
As we start a new school year, I am pleased to share with you the news of
someone who has indeed answered the call. Effective August 24, I have appointed Mr. Fred Haller to be the president of St. Mary’s School. He will report
directly to me and work closely with the school principals, Mrs. Rebecca Zimmerman and Mrs. Mindi Imes, to bring a renewed focus on strategic planning,
curriculum and technology enhancements, and our vision for a connected, vibrant school. His work will directly support the preparation of our students to
become the next generation of Catholic leaders. Mr. Haller has been a member
of our school board, most recently serving as its chair. That service has given
him an in-depth understanding of the needs and goals of St. Mary’s School. He
also brings with him years of professional experience in teaching, school administration, advancement, admissions, and technology integration in the classroom. As an educational technology consultant with experience in numerous
schools, he can bring what is the best and brightest to our school, helping us to
continue grow, adapt, and have a future that is as brilliant as our rich history!
Please join me in welcoming and supporting Mr. Haller in his new role and continue to pray for the continued success of St. Mary’s School.

Queridos feligreses,
"O.K.?", dijo Susi, aceptando a

catequesis. No siempre transmitimos
