My Lord & My God
By Cynthia Reyes
Today, the story of Thomas comes to us in John’s Gospel and as we contemplate on this story one must
keep in mind one question: Why was this story written? John’s Gospel is the last written gospel of the New Testament and is addressing a community that is two generations removed from the physical death and Resurrection
of Jesus. When we place the story in that context, Thomas then becomes a story about the Church, about you
and me! The primary point of the story is Thomas’s coming to faith, in spite of his nick name, “doubting
Thomas.”
This story poses a question for each one of us. Where is my unbelief? In the early church there were
those disciples who refused to join in the healing activity of Peter and the apostles; it was just too dangerous.
Christian faith is a strange mix of fear and confidence. We too struggle with this.
The healing of Thomas’s doubt came in examining and touching the wounds of the risen Christ. We too
must find and touch the wounds of the risen Christ today. Easter calls us to touch the wounds of the teenage
who is struggling with becoming an adult. Young people need to touch the wounds of their parents, and accept
their imperfections. We are called to touch the wounds of the alcoholic who perhaps needs an intervention to
break out of the deathly cycle of alcoholism. By touching the wounds of those who suffer from cancer, those
who are grieving, we touch the wounds of the crucified and yet risen Christ. It is at the Eucharistic table that we
gather our courage and move from our “doubting faith” to our Easter confidence, and say the words of Thomas, “My Lord and my God.”
¡Señor Mio Y Dios Mio!
Cynthia Reyes
