March 24, 2013, Palm Sunday
Pope Francis, formerly the Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elected Pope on March 13, 2013. He is known to
be a humble man of great faith. He also is known to ask people to bless him

Good Friday
What good is it about this particular
Friday? Two thousand years ago, on
that Friday evening on the hill of Golgotha, the cross has casted its shadow
over the history of humanity. Thanks
to the crucified God-man, Jesus on the
cross, this Friday is good because it is
not a day for "pretending" that the Son
of God is dead, but rather for the joyful commemoration of His passion and
death, which is the life-giving source.
In faith, we believe Christ's death has
unleashed the living water of life. So
Good Friday truly anticipates the joys
of the Lord's Easter Sunday during
which the Church celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption. In this
joyful anticipation, let us then, as
members of the Church, not only keep
sacred the Paschal Fast, but also be
fully conscious and active participants
in the sacred liturgy of Good Friday of
the Lord's passion. In order to do so,
we invite you to look at the structure
of the liturgy for Good Friday, which
has three parts.
Part I. Liturgy of the Word: The
first reading is from Isaiah 52:1353:12, recalling the fourth oracle of
the Servant of the Lord, who himself
was wounded for our sins. The second
reading is taken from Hebrews 4:1416; 5:7-9, showing that through His
familial obedience to the Father, Jesus
became the source of salvation for all
who obey Him. Finally, the Gospel
reading is from John 18:1-19:42, the
Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ. After
these readings, a brief homily is given,
then the Liturgy of
the Word concludes
with ten solemn intercessions (I. for Ho- Brother Anthony
ly Church; II. for the Pope; III. for all
orders and degrees of the faithful; IV.
for catechumens; V. for unity of Christians; VI. for the Jewish people; VII
for those who do not believe in Christ;
VIII. for those who do not believe in
God; IX. for all in public office; X. for
those in tribulation ).
Part II. Veneration of the Cross:
To the cross-carrier's invitation, "This
is the wood of the cross, on which
hung the Savior of the world," we respond, "Come, let us worship." We
worship the cross because, "The cross
of Christ is the supreme sign of God’s
love for every man and woman, the
superabundant response to every person’s need for love”. (Benedict XVI,
Good Friday, 6 April 2012). We are
also invited to show appropriate signs
of reverence, such as kissing the cross.
The celebrant goes first, then clergy
and the faithful approach the cross in a
kind of procession.
Part III. Holy Communion: After
the Veneration of the Cross, the
stripped-bare Altar now is prepared for
the service of Holy Communion. The
Eucharist will be carried in from the
place of reposition to the Altar. Following is the very simple Communion
service, which will conclude the solemn liturgy of Good Friday. There is
no blessing nor dismissal, rather all
depart in silence.

as recorded in her Diary (1588)

hildren’s Liturgy of the Word is expanding to
the 11:00 Sunday Mass. We are looking for a
coordinator(s) and teachers to lead the children in
grades K-4th in hearing the Sunday Gospel reading
from the Children’s Lectionary, discussing the Gospel, and then doing an activity to reinforce the Gospel message. All materials are provided and you
work with a partner. Please help us bring the Good
News to our children. Call Vanessa at 456-4969.
Please invite these people to call or come to the rectory office for info on receiving assistance. Sometimes people begging in the parking aren’t in need,
they are just begging money and taking away from
those who really need help. Thank you for your loving charity!
