A dear friend of mine in San Antonio, thoroughly obsessed with Christmas and its decorations, is now incapacitated by age from her usual extravagance. One year she decided to leave up her “inside” decorations all year, making appropriate additions with each new season. It seemed a mess to me, but her smile made it okay. Actually, by this time in January all our too-early-hung decorations seem worn out. We even sense a worn-out feeling to the entire world. Economies are sluggish. War and its threats will simply not disappear. God is used as an excuse for violence. Others claim God is dead, a mere irrelevance instead of a Divine Person to be adored. Yet today we are called to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, to marvel at the showing forth of God’s glory, His light responding to the world’s darkness. Our liturgical calendar purposely separates the Nativity Feast from the Epiphany Feast, proclaiming not only that God’s saving grace has entered the world (Jesus’ birth) but that this salvation is made manifest to the nations (the Magi story), evident in the everyday lives of men and women, applicable to the affairs of the world in all their complexity. Because of the long stretch of history between Jesus’ life and ours, we may wonder what difference His life has made – what difference it can ever make – in the large events of the world, or even in the problems we or our families are experiencing. But the Christian response is that the coming of Christ’s light amidst our darkness makes all the difference in the world – and for the world. Individuals and nations can be changed by openness to the glory of Jesus manifested in us. Today’s liturgy shouts of Christian hope in the midst of difficulties because God is the source of that hope. In the first reading Isaiah imagines Jerusalem as the light of the world, her radiance coming not from the sun but from Yahweh Himself. Creation declares that the Lord is the light, but like the Magi (and Herod) in today’s Gospel, many are asking, “Where is the newborn King of the Jews?” Paul tells the Ephesians in today’s second reading that in Jesus both Jews and Gentiles are co-heirs of God’s Kingdom, so we also ask, “Where is our King?” The life of nations does not exist independent of its people – nations will change as persons in them change. Nations will see the light as the individuals in them see the light. If we as Christians fervently and faithfully live as though we believe in Christ’s Presence and act like His Body, this manifestation of God’s presence will be celebrated by others. We are the wise ones following the right star to the Lord, the true King of us all! But like the Magi who changed directions after seeing the Lord, going home by another way, we too must embrace a holiness that changes us and the world. May it be so at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School in the year 2016, a Year of Mercy. In Jesus, Fr. Mike TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The LORD shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm — Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading — The mystery has been made known that the Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel — Magi from the east arrived, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?” (Matthew 2:1-12). Show us your face and we will be saved. You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: Let the Church be your visible face in the world. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. Amen. TIME CHANGE ARCHBISHIP GUSTAVO GARCIA-SILLER will be with us next Saturday, January 9; Mass will be at 4 p.m. instead of the regular 5 p.m. There will be NO confessions prior to Mass. St. Therese of Lisieux is the patroness of missionaries although she never left her convent. She died at the early age of 24, yet accomplished great things through the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The church made her the patroness of missionaries to emphasize this most important truth: One soul coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the world! St. Therese said, “My mission is to make God loved.” May she intercede for us in spreading Eucharistic Adoration throughout the world! Vinnie on Broadway's NOTES FROM THE HEART The volunteers at St Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you stories that your donations and thrift shop support make possible. God is our judge and Jesus is our Boss. Because of this guideline, we do not prosecute shoplifters. Most common form is changing price stickers and used clothes and shoes literally walking out the door. This is sad because we give out vouchers to the store for clothing and household necessities in our financial aide office. Before Christmas, a customer brought up three of the same plate. One was priced $.25, one $.75, and the third $4. She asked, "What is the correct price?" We replied, " All, because they were priced by 3 different people". The cashier sold all three to her for $2.00. A few months ago, an unusual episode occurred. We had a young woman, with her child in tow, buy a new condition quilt set originally from Walmart for $2. The cashier thought the price suspicious because most sets go for $12-$30 dollars. But condition and length of shelf time are factors in pricing. As the customer was leaving, the cashier went into the pricing room to ask if anyone remembered this item. A volunteer recalled pricing the set that day for $50. In righteous rage, two volunteers raced out of the shop and halted the woman in the parking lot. The woman told the volunteer to take the set back and give her the $2 back, which is what happened. The volunteer wanted to detain and call the police. The current conference president and therefore general manager of the thrift shop was present at the time. The manager told the volunteers that we do not call the police for shop-lifting and added to offer the woman one of our free blankets in the back. Ignoring the newcomer manager, the volunteer went to the past president, who told her the same thing. Indignant, the volunteer returned to the pricing room and marked the set for $90! The following week the crew cleaning and tidying the store took the set and broke it into separately priced items. All pieces sold to different people within a couple days. The total price $22. Someone now has a warm quilt that did not before. Whose offense to God was greater, the catcher or the thief? Probably the recorder of the event. BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. We are currently featuring recent additions to the library. Three books give accounts of the life of Catherine de Hueck Doherty, born in Russia, who worked in Canada and the United States as a servant of the poor, much as did Dorothy Day. Last week we wrote about Tumbleweed, the biography (1948) by her journalist husband, which gives a basic account of her life before her marriage. The second book (1979) Fragments of My Life, by Catherine de Hueck Doherty, is, among other things, a real thriller – the account of her escape as a teen-ager from Russia during its Revolution puts flesh on the generalizations we have heard about the horrors of that time. There are also charming fashion notes from her years on the Chautauqua circuit, and many notes from time spent in various kitchens under various challenges. In the introduction, she describes her book as “fragments from the life of a Russian storyteller who reveals truth as it is revealed to her.” Her accounts of poverty and racism in the United States in the midtwentieth century are a heartrending indictment of a decadent culture. I wish to thank God with all my being for the Gift of our salvation and the countless gifts He has given to the parish and school all year long. I also with to thank each of you for your participation in our parish and school during the year, especially for your participation in the sacred liturgies of this Advent and Christmas seasons. We all owe a debt of deep gratitude to our Pastoral Team: Father Scott, Dwayne Mosser, Dorothy Cass, Dianne Albrecht, Alma Cruz-Gonzales, Denise Jenschke, Wyatt Wentrcek, and Marlin Marcum, the principal of our school, and Mark Hoffmann, president of the school. Each of these dedicated disciples daily offer his or her faith and talents for the proclamation of the Kingdom of God. I pray that each knows how grateful I am, and that you will let them know of your prayerful support and care as you meet them in the course of their service. They bear extra responsibilities because of my many ministries outside of the parish. Our parish and school staffs have also faithfully responded to God’s call and have contributed greatly to the work of God in this place. Eva Bill and Tracy Gourley with the parish office, Michelle Coldwell and Irene Alcorta with the school office help keep us organized and moving. Dawn Kanady, our school bookkeeper will be leaving us for other ministries as we begin our new year, and Debbie Mossman is returning to the school staff to take Dawn’s place. Carmen Gutierrez with liturgy and music and Nelda Bill with the Faith Formation office help us to be faithful and responsible to the many needs of the parish. They are all indeed a blessing and they keep our ministry fueled by their faithful attention and love. Katrina Dry and Lisa Calderon joyfully care for the living quarters of the priests. Our maintenance supervisor, Mark Ince, daily reminds us that we are blessed—and he is the blessing. We are graced by the presence of the many who assist to keep order and volunteer to serve in so many ways. Father Scott and I would also like to thank all of you who worship in the community of faith. The gift of your faith is tremendous. We thank all who brought wonderful gifts from your homes and kitchens to our home. The monetary gifts are so very appreciated. Your words of encouragement go a long way to remind us that we do this for the One we serve, Who has first loved us. We will do our best to let our faithful service be our thanksgiving to God and to you. In Jesus, Fr.
