Today’s Gospel
I
“When the Sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were
astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given
him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands”! MARK 6:2
n this gospel passage,
Jesus has just entered his
native synagogue in Nazareth. All
are amazed at how Jesus speaks
with such authority and confidence
and clarity about God and His
kingdom. Are we able to accept
Jesus’ authority? I submit that
sometime, just like the Jews, some of
whom were probably friends of
Jesus – we have difficulty in
embracing all of His teaching. Are
we willing to put our own ideas
aside to listen to the voice of the
Good Shepherd? Sometimes our
own ideas might need the support
and direction of other believers and
of the teaching of our Church.
The Church Helps
The Church exists to help to
understand the kingdom of God.
Sometimes it is good to remind
ourselves that the Church has
weathered more than 2,000 years.
Sometimes its teaching can be
difficult but over time the Church
founded by Christ has tried to
preach the truth of the gospel day
in and day out. There are going to
be days, when others will challenge
our beliefs. We certainly can be
compassionate in listening. However
we need to proclaim the truth of the
Gospel which includes the
celebration of the deep mysteries
of our faith, embracing these
mysteries by the practice of our
faith. Entering into these
sacramental mysteries helps to
transform us to be involved as
parishioners in the apostolate to the
poor, for example. This can include
working in the Food Pantry,
supporting and welcoming new
members of our community.
Transformation can help us to begin
new work such as the special needs
ministry here at St. Rosalie’s. There
are so many ways that the
mysteries we celebrate can open up
our hearts!
Thoughts of Summer
Welcome to summer! What a
beautiful time of year it is here on
the East End to celebrate the Gift of
God’s love for each and every one
of us. Starting on July 5, we will be
starting the second Mass at 10:15
a.m. at Saint Rosalie’s in East
Quogue. We welcome all our
summer residents and visitors to East
Quogue and Hampton Bays. June
has been such a blur this year – but
I guess it always is, with
graduations and the end of the
school year for our children in
religious formation as well.
I hope everyone has a
wonderful month of July with time
for each, perhaps to take some time
off, spend some time with family,
maybe on the beach, on a picnic or
other activities of leisure. Enjoy your
family, friends and parishioners.
Fortnight Closing Mass
St. Agnes Cathedral, July 4,
at 9 a.m.
As Catholics we all think of this
important Fortnight for Freedom as
we celebrate Independence Day on
July Fourth. As we prepare to
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
celebrate our nation’s
independence on July Fourth, let us
remember that our country was
founded on the principles of
religious liberty and freedom.
During this important time in our
country’s history and the practice of
our faith and all other faiths let us
pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
St. Rosalie’s Parish Life
On July 9 we will host Anthony
Fuina who will speak to the parish
at 7:30 p.m. during Exposition of
the Eucharist in the Church. He was
cured of his cancer through the
intercession of Padre Pio. This
miracle was part of the
investigation of the Congregation
of the Saints in Rome to canonize
Padre Pio as Saint Pio. He will
speak of his experience. This should
be a wonderful evening for our
parish. Mike Plona and the priests
will sponsor a Youth Event after the
talk during Adoration of the
Eucharist called: Encounter with
Christ. It will be a night of prayer
and fellowship for junior high, high
school and college age young
people. It will include prayer,
fellowship and fun, culminating with
Mass at the Shinnecock Inlet at 5
a.m. followed by breakfast in the
Parish Center at 6 a.m.
Summer Breezes and God’s
Blessings, Enjoy the
holiday week, Be Safe
and Happy Fourth of
July!

Printed from www.
