Commemorating Emilio Navaira

It is with heavy heart that
INGEÑUITY and the Tejano
Music National Convention
honors the memory of Tejano
icon Emilio Navaira. We send
our sincerest condolences to
his family and friends and
pray for comfort and peace.
Emilio has been part of the
Vegas Tejano family from
the beginning and a personal
friend for more than two decades. Emilio, together with
his brother Raulito, helped
launch the Tejano Convention
(national annual gathering
of Tejano enthusiasts and
industry) back in 2004 and
were featured many times
thereafter. As many of you
know, they were scheduled
to perform together this year.
As an artist, I’m not sure
there was ever a better showman in the genre. We collaborated in 2006, when he
readily agreed to open his
performance joined by an Elvis Presley impersonator. The
unrehearsed performance was
amazing! He called me after
Vegas just to talk about the
faces in the audience and how
he really enjoyed that opportunity. “I love you man” was
how he always ended his call.
As an all-time fan-favorite,
Emilio would ignite the stage
with unmatched energy and
a sense of fun in his unique
Tex-Mex pop polka style.
He recorded some of the best
dance tunes now embraced
as wedding and quinceañera traditions - in essence,
Emilio’s music has been the
soundtrack of people’s lives
and Tejano culture.
As a bilingual multi-cultural
artist, his contribution extended to country music. He
traveled and performed internationally taking this fusion of
American-made music South
of the border. As executive
producer of prime time TV
specials, I had the unique opportunity to feature Emilio on
NCLR’s 2006 ALMA Awards,
an ABC television special, on
stage together with country
music’s Big & Rich, Latin
artist Paulina Rubio and Mariachi Divas for a spectacular
musical finale.
I selected Emilio because I
thought he best represented
the idea that country music
and its cousin Tejano could
be fused as one. I recall asking
Emilio to have his accordionist at the time to add accordion to a Big & Rich song,
and then sending it to Big
& Rich to seduce them into
performing on the show. It
worked and the performance
was magical.
I am not sure if he ever
knew what he meant to the
Hispanic community. His success was the Latino community’s success. In the American
tradition — a blazing star that
lit our skies.
And now we bow our heads
and lift our hats to Emilio Navaira! His musical legacy will
continue… “Shoot It!”

A story about a famous
man who died young —
remembering Emilio Navaira

Death is a difficult subject
for most of us. We look into
the eyes of our parents and
grandparents, and we can’t
imagine our world without
their smile—without their embrace—without their warmth
and genuine good words to
help us through our days.
This is the way that the
family of the late Emilio
Navaira will grieve over the
next period of days, weeks
and months.
Emilio Navaira died in
his home last week. His
iconic music will live on for
ages—through vinyl, internet
streaming, video recordings
and media formats yet unknown.
When I heard of his death
last week, it made me recall a book that I read in
high school, “Death Be Not
Proud.” The book was written by a novelist during the
1940s, when his teenage son
had developed a brain tumor.
Back in that era, there was
little to do but to perform
some fairly rudimentary surgery and simply hope for the
best. The survival rates were
rare.
As the book progressed,
it described the bravery of
the teen as he consoled his
parents and caretakers. He
knew that he was going to
in paradise soon. He viewed
the last few months of his
life as a special mission — to
prepare his loved ones for his
departure.
Even on his most difficult
days, the dying teenager managed to find a way to make his
caregivers laugh.

described the scene as the
doctors swarmed over his
son’s lifeless body, describing
them as “Helpless flies crawling across the granite face of
death.”
In dying, the teenager
showed his parents and other
loved ones how to live – that
is to say — how to cope when
feelings of helplessness engulf
over us. “Like helpless flies
crawling across the granite
face of death.”
Emilio brought joy to generations of music lovers. But
to his family, he was much
more than a music icon. Keep
them in your prayers as he is
laid to rest.
We should learn from the
death of this great music
legend. There is no guarantee that we will live to our
“Golden Years.” Although
his son described his father
as living with great physical
pain, it was a heart attack that
killed him.
As a way of paying tribute
to this incredible performer,
I recall the words that were
spoken at the 1964 Democratic National Convention
by the late Robert F. Kennedy
as the convention both roared
and wept at the images of
President Kennedy.
As he addressed the crowd,
Bobby Kennedy recalled the
words of Shakespeare from
“Romeo and Juliet:”
“If he should die,
Cut him into little stars,
And he shall make the face
of heaven so fine,
That all the world would
fall in love with night,
And bid no worship to the
garish sun.”
La Prensa has devoted this
edition to the life of Emilio
Navaira. I offer these words,
once spoken about a fallen
president, to honor this music
giant.

Es remunerable añadirle a su dieta porciones
de nueces, pistachos, almendras y vegetales

¡Vaya! Qué buena noticia
me he encontrado, por lo cual
la estaré compartiendo con mis
tres lectores en este testimonio
dedicado a los beneficios que
nos pueden dejar el consumo
de nueces, pistachos, almendras, anacardos, semillas de
girasol y calabaza.
Sin dejar por fuera verduras
de su preferencia, estos productos –de acuerdo a estudios
científicos– pueden ayudarle
al ser humano a mantener
robusto y limpio de bacterias
dañinas el tracto intestinal,
ya que contienen proteínas y
grasas benignas.
Los productos que se dan en
concha o cascara dura, como
los arriba citados, son de gran
beneficio para combatir las
toxinas y grasas que hacen
que las personas aumenten
de peso.
Incrementar el consumo
de nueces, almendras, pistachos, anacardos, verduras y
frutas frescas, les hará obtener
mayor nutrición, ya que son
una fuente de nutrientes que
se pueden consumir durante
el desayuno, almuerzo y cena.
También se pueden consumir a cualquier hora del día, ya
sea en el trabajo (si su turno lo
permite), conduciendo su auto
durante un largo viaje o como
simple aperitivo.
Estos productos se pueden
consumir de una a dos porciones por día, lo cual a la
vez les alejará del consumo de
comidas rápidas entre otros
aperitivos que contienen grasa
y alto nivel de carbohidratos.
Personalmente lo he comprobado. Desde pequeño consumía semillas de calabaza,
nueces y fruta fresca. Las verduras no fueron entonces mis
favoritas, pero con el paso de
los años las fui aceptando en
mi dieta diaria.
En los 16 años que tengo de
abstinencia por bebidas embriagantes me he convertido en
consumidor de nueces regulares y de las llamadas California
Walnuts, estas contienen el
mismo nutriente, pero son más
ligeras y se pueden compartir
con ensaladas de verduras
frescas, queso de su gusto y lo
mismo con helados dietéticos o
regulares. Cuando me da hambre, si voy conduciendo, tengo
a la mano una lata con nueces,
almendras, anacardos, semillas de calabaza sin cascara y
uvas secas, y de beber: agua
o té embotellado. Esto nada
más para calmar el hambre
mientras llego a mi restaurante
preferido. Son muchos los
beneficios que me ha dejado
este tipo de dieta, por lo que
de antemano con gusto se los
paso al “costo”.
Si ustedes, mis estimados
tres lectores, desean robustecer
el tracto intestinal, comiendo
productos naturales como los
anacardos, nueces, pistachos,
almendras y semillas, les aseguro que no se van arrepentir.
Nunca es tarde para comenzar
el cambio de dieta dándole el
giro a la vianda nutritiva que
aquí les recomiendo.
Los pistachos, comiéndolos
como aperitivos, les ayudarán
a reducir el consumo de calorías, por igual comiendo almendras y nueces, cuyo contenido nutritivo ayudará al
tracto digestivo produciendo
recursos energéticos que fortifican celdas en los intestinos.
El incrementar el consumo
de nueces nos ayudará a reducir el volumen de grasa en
el físico, dándonos una sana y
mejor figura corporal.
A las damas las harán verse
más joviales y luciendo cintura
de “Coca-Cola”. Y los varones
podrán lucir una musculatura
(siempre y cuando hagan un
poco de ejercicios) que muchos
envidiarán.
Por cierto que leyendo sobre
el contenido de estos productos, pude darme cuenta que
su consumo es de contenido
graso saludable, así como
proteínico y fibroso, con lo
que se estará combatiendo las
terribles “lonjas” causadas por
el alto consumo desmedido de
productos grasosos y con alto
nivel de calorías y carbohidratos. Por último, les recomiendo
hidratarse bebiendo agua o
bebidas energéticas naturales,
sin mucho contenido calórico.
Especialmente ahora que se
acerca la temporada de verano,
para qué así se eviten la visita
a la sala de emergencia. Si no
se hidratan, como resultado,
pueden ser víctimas de sorpresivos mareos, así como daño
a los riñones, hígado y dentadura (esto por resequedad
de boca).

Mayor Taylor proclaims May as
‘Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month’

Neurofibromatosis affects
120,000 Americans – and
there is no cure.
In an effort to give the community the opportunity to
learn more about the lifethreatening disease, Mayor Ivy
Taylor has declared May as
“Neurofibromatosis Awareness
Month” in San Antonio.
“This morning we hope that
more San Antonians become
aware of NF and the work
that is being done by the Children’s Tumor Foundation,”
Mayor Taylor stated earlier this
week. “The Children’s Tumor
Foundation will drive research
towards treatment and a cure
to NF, support families and
raise awareness to support and
advance the fight against NF.”
According to The Children’s
Tumor Foundation, Neurofibromatosis stems into three
types of diseases: Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) and
Schwannomatosis. Long-term
symptoms of the three diseases
include deafness, blindness,
disfigurement, bone abnormalities, learning disabilities,
disabling pain and even cancer. It occurs in all populations
equally, regardless of ethnicity
or gender.
Dallas native Angela Earle,
NF endurance manager at The
Children’s Tumor Foundation, is one of those people
affected by the disease. Her
child currently struggles with
NF, which has motivated her
to participate in a 3,000-mile
bicycle race across the United
States to spread the message of
NF awareness.
Earle feels grateful about
San Antonio’s decision to raise
awareness in May and believes
it will help create a larger solution to support NF research.
“I would like to thank the
City of San Antonio for recognizing May as the NF Awareness Month. This is a huge
cause that is being supported.
It does affect one in every
3,000 people, and we have
some families that are affected
by NF including my daughter,
so this is very meaningful to
me,” Earle said.
NF1, which causes enlargement and deformation of bones
and curvature of the spine (scoliosis) occurs in 1 in 3,000
births and is characterized by
multiple cafe-au-lait spots and
neurofibromas on or under
the skin. Tumors occasionally
develop in the brain, on cranial
nerves or on the spinal cord.
There are around 50 percent
of people with NF1 who also
carry learning disabilities.

and spinal nerves and other
lesions along the brain and
spinal cord. The tumors affecting both of the auditory nerves
create early symptoms of hear-
ing loss in teens or early 20s.
Schwannomatosis, a rare
form of NF, has affected
around 1 in 40,000 individuals. Unlike NF1 and NF2,
the inheritance patterns of
Schwannomatosis are not understood due largely to the lack
of cases to study. It is estimated
that 85 percent of cases do not
come from family history and

Los dos mundos de Lin-Manuel Miranda Calendario de la comunidad

es una especie de mago.
Vive en va
rios mundos
a la vez.
Jorge Ramos
Casi todas
las noches lo puedes ver ac
tuando en Broadway en la obra
“Hamilton”, que él escribió.
Y muchos días lo encuentras
peleando por una isla, donde
no nació, pero que le duele:
Puerto Rico.
Puede saltar en el mismo día
de su casa en Nueva York a la
Casa Blanca en Washington,
donde rapeó con el presidente
Barack Obama. Y no tiene
ningún problema en hablar
conmigo en spanglish y brincar
ágilmente de un idioma a otro.
Miranda habita todos esos
mundos. (Aquí puedes ver la

Miranda, antes que nada,
es un artista comprometido.
Comprometido con su arte. Se
tardó siete años en escribir la
obra “Hamilton”, que ha recibido un Pulitzer y un record de
16 nominaciones a los premios
Tony. Y comprometido con la
isla de Puerto Rico, que tiene
una deuda de 70 mil millones
de dólares, y no la puede pagar.
Mi papel en este drama político es solo poner una cara humana, you know, me dijo. Yo
creo que la responsabilidad de
los puertorriqueños que crecieron en Estados Unidos en
la diáspora es darle voz a los
puertorriqueños que viven en
la isla y que están sufriendo.
Y eso es exactamente lo
que ha estado haciendo. Miranda ha puesto la presión en
el Congreso norteamericano y
lo ha acusado de mismanagement e inacción. El Congreso
podría hoy mismo aprobar
una ley para que Puerto Rico
se declarara en bancarrota, reestructurara su deuda y evitara
una crisis humanitaria. Pero no
han hecho nada en Washington. Nada.
Si Puerto Rico fuera el estado 51 de Estados Unidos,
quizás no estaría pasando por
estos problemas financieros.
¿Apoyas la estadidad? le pregunto. Esa es una pregunta
para los que viven en la isla.
Vivo en Nueva York, me dice.

that. Y la próxima pregunta es:
¿Qué somos?”
Retomo su propia pregunta.
¿Qué son los puertorriqueños?
¿Eres puertorriqueño antes que
estadounidense? Yo me defino
como un hijo de puertorriqueños que creció en Nueva York;
I’m as Nuyorican as they come,
responde en dos idiomas este
relator de historias musicales.
Pero yo pasé muchos veranos
en Puerto Rico. Yo tengo
mucha familia en la isla. Esta
pregunta no es política, es
personal”. Dice Miranda que la
pregunta de la identidad tiene
que ser contestada por la gente
que vive en la isla, no por mí.
El Caribe está dentro de él.
“Hamilton” es la historia de un
inmigrante nacido en la isla caribeña de Nevis, criado en Saint
Croix y que se convirtió en
uno de los padres fundadores
de Estados Unidos. Eso fue lo
que atrajo a Miranda a escribir
sobre Alexander Hamilton. La
historia del inmigrante es la
historia de los Estados Unidos,
me contó. Siempre hemos
venido de otros países para
mejorar nuestras vidas y hacer
el trabajo difícil”.
¿Y cómo explicas el fenómeno de Donald Trump? Lo
que estamos viendo es algo que
siempre ha pasado en nuestro
proceso político, aunque no sé
si tan duro como hoy, reflexio
nó el también creador de la
obra “In the Heights”. Los inmigrantes siempre son el enemigo
en un ciclo de elección. Pasó en
1996 con Pat Buchanan (candidato republicano a la presidencia en las primarias que atacó
la inmigración mexicana), pasó
con los irlandeses cuando ellos
eran los inmigrantes nuevos
del siglo XIX. Y lo estamos
viendo hoy.
Para Miranda, el arte siempre
va adelante de la política. Pero
la tierra llama: Yo tengo una
alergia a la política. Yo prefiero estar en casa escribiendo
canciones, creando arte. Pero a
la vez, mi gente allá en Puerto
Rico está sufriendo. Así que
mientras yo tenga está luz bri
llante en mí, yo la voy a enfocar
al sufrimiento de la gente en
Puerto Rico. Eso sí lo siento
como mi responsabilidad. Yo
no tengo la respuesta. Solo
tengo este spotlight. Y en estos
momentos ese reflector brilla a
todo lo que da.
Posdata mexicana
Me parece genial y muy valiente que Denise Dresser esté
pensando en lanzarse al ruedo
para las elecciones presidenciales del 2018. El tema pendiente
de Ayotzinapa la está empujando, según dijo en una entrevista
con Javier Risco. Jorge Castañeda también lo está pensando
seria y metódicamente. Sería
muy bueno para el futuro de
México tener un debate con
ellos dos, con Pedro Ferriz de
Con, que ya se destapó, y con
los candidatos de los partidos
políticos tradicionales.
Primera pregunta: ¿Qué van
a hacer con los responsables de
Ayotzinapa?
Segunda: ¿Investigarán a
Peña Nieto por corrupción por
su Casa Blanca?
Tercera: ¿Cómo evitar otros
100 mil muertos por sexenio?
Cuarta: ¿Saben crear buenos
trabajos? Quinta: ¿Volverán a
nacionalizar el petróleo?
Sexta: ¿Cuánto dinero dice
que tiene? Séptima: ¿Se debe

Just a Thought: Ex-Mexican President Vicente Fox

Vicente Fox
has been in
the national
news recently
Steve Walker over his adverse reaction
to a political promise made
by presumptive Republican
presidential nominee, Donald
Trump.
Trump is promising to build
a border wall between Mexico
and the U.S., demanding that
Mexico pay for the construction of that wall. According to
Trump, he wants to keep out
undocumented immigrants
from entering the country without legal papers.
When I covered the former
president of Mexico’s visit to
San Antonio on May 24, 2007,
while he served as the keynote
speaker during the Hispanic
Media Awards at the Marriott
Rivercenter, I was honored
to shake his hand and speak
with him.
The event honored the na-
tion’s top Spanish language
journalists and media personalities of the day.
Having published the Walker
Report at the time for nearly a
year, I obtained my press pass
and attended the event in hopes
of taking photos of him giving
his speech. I was successful.
I remember I was visiting
with Telemundo 60 News Reporter Yolanda Vasquez and
her photographer Roy Ibarra
out in the hallway outside the
banquet hall awaiting his arrival. We figured he would come
in the back and go behind the
stage. Much to our surprise, I
looked up and saw him coming
down the hallway in the hotel
with an escort and his wife,
Marta. I motioned to Yolanda
and Roy and exclaimed, “There
he is!”
Yolanda, Roy and I made a
mad dash towards him with
their video camera, her microphone and my small camera
in tow. He graciously stopped
when Yolanda identified herself and asked for an interview.
I was directly behind her snap-
ping photos of him as she
began what turned out to be a
20 minute interview.
His wife stood at his side quietly and patiently as Yolanda
asked questions, Roy kept his
camera rolling and I furiously
was snapping as many photos
as my camera would allow.
President Fox was animated
and when he talked, his hands
were motioning in the air and
all over the place. He is one
of those who speaks with his
hands.
When all was said and done,
I snapped nearly 60 photos
of him, of which at least 20
weren’t good because his hand
was covering his face as he
spoke.
As he spoke, my wife Linda
was standing nearby. She quietly asked Marta Fox, the
former president’s wife, in
limited Spanish if she could
take a photo with him when
he finished.
His wife grabbed the president the minute the interview
was completed and told him,
“Take a photo with this lady.”
He posed with Linda, and she
now has photos of her and the
president.
As Yolanda, Roy and I
walked backwards continuing
our coverage, the president
shook hands with those in attendance. At one point, Fox
News Anchors Ernie Zuniga
and Michael Valdez stood
close. I quietly directed them
closer, and then I asked the
president if he would pose
with the two Fox anchors. He
graciously obliged. He thought
it was fun to pose with “Fox”
reporters.
I told him the caption would
read, “Fox y Fox!” He laughed.
Ernie and Michael were elated
and to the best of my knowledge, they both still have a
copy of the photo I took. Ernie
is still at Fox 29, while Michel

Magnetismo de Sanders: Feel the Bern

¿Cuál es el magnetismo de
Bernie Sanders con las nuevas
generaciones del electorado
nacional? La semana pasada
tuve una conversación con mi
hija de 19 años, quien, como
muchos jóvenes universitarios de hoy, está contagiada
por el mensaje “revolucionario” que infunde el senador
de Vermont.
Yo, como padre y como
individuo que se apasiona
de los procesos políticos,
simplemente me puse feliz
de que mi hija tome muy en
cuenta su participación en las
elecciones del país.
El magnetismo de Sanders
con las nuevas generaciones resulta un tanto irónico. Normalmente se espera
que sea un político joven y
carismático –muy al estilo
del ex presidente John F.
Kennedy y del presidente
Barack Obama— energice
a las nuevas generaciones
con sus proyectos sociales y
económicos.
Sanders no tiene el carisma
de Obama, ni la simpatía de
Kennedy. Tampoco tiene la
virtud de conmover a la gente
con una oratoria prodigiosa
como la que tuvo Martin Lu-
ther King, líder natural de las
masas minoritarias.
¿Entonces qué es lo que
tiene? A diferencia de estos
tres líderes nacionales, San
ders tiene un proyecto político-económico que conquista
el corazón de un joven que
está en etapa universitaria o
de cualquier persona profesional recién graduada que
está en busca de oportunidades laborales.
La retórica de Sanders pega
fuerte con todas esas personas que buscan “algo” que les
permita salir del atolladero
económico en el que se encuentran.
Sanders promueve la idea
de que los estudios universitarios deberían ser gratis
para todos. En varios momentos comentó –y con mucha
razón— que la educación
superior está devaluada. Un
recién egresado de cualquier
rama universitaria, no tiene
las mismas oportunidades
que tenía una persona que
egresó en la década de 1960
o 1970.
El mercado laboral está
extremadamente saturado de
profesionales de todas clases.
Muchos de los nuevos egresados no encuentran trabajos
en sus áreas de especialidad.
Tienen que conformarse en
áreas afines en centros comer
ciales o tiendas especializadas. Un flamante ingeniero
que debería estar cultivándose
en una planta de ingeniería a
menudo desempeña un papel
sin importancia en una tienda
de artículos electrónicos. Lo
mismo sucede con un administrador de empresas, un
biólogo o una persona con
un título en ciencias sociales.
En estas condiciones del
mercado, los únicos que ganan
son las empresas privadas. Si
anteriormente contrataban
a personas sin capacidades
específicas, hoy se ven aba
rrotados de hojas de vida o
curriculum vitaes de jóvenes
profesionales con mucho capital humano. Todos ellos están
dispuestos a ejercer trabajos
que anteriormente los desa
rrollaban personas sin o con
poca educación.
Los sueldos de los trabajos que encuentran los
jóvenes graduados no les
alcanzan para pagar adeudos
universitarios estrafalarios.
La colegiatura anual en la
Universidad de California
Irvine, donde me gradué e
impartí clases, cuesta alrededor de 13.000 dólares.
A esto hay que agregar la
renta, la comida, ropa, libros y otros gastos. En la
Universidad Estatal de Fullerton la inscripción anual
vale cerca de 6.000 dólares.
Una persona tiene que ser
extremadamente rica para
estudiar en la Universidad
del Sur de California (USC),
en donde la colegiatura anual
vale 50.277 dólares; y si se
incluye todo, el costo es de
67.212 dólares anuales por
un estudiante.
En este sentido, un universitario sale de la universidad con una profesión que
difícilmente va a encontrar
un trabajo que le remunere
todo lo que gastó en cuatro
años de estudio.
Así, resulta muy fácil entender por qué Sanders tiene
tanto éxito con las nuevas
generaciones. Su retórica
dice mucho de la realidad
universitaria.

PEDRO FRIEDEBERG: PRAISE OF FOLLY— Ruiz-Healy

LINDA PACE FOUNDATION PRESENTS: RIVANE
NEUENSCHWANDER-SECONDARY STORIES— This
spring, the Linda Pace Foundation presents the Texas debut
of “Secondary Stories,” a room-sized installation by Brazilian
artist Rivane Neuenschwander, who has become widely regarded for her often ephemeral work that explores narratives
about language, nature, social interactions and the passing of
time. Showcasing “Secondary Stories” as well as three video
installation works, the exhibition opens at SPACE, the public
gallery of the Linda Pace Foundation. The exhibit will be on
view through July 29, 2017 at Linda Pace Foundation, 111

SAN ANTONIO WIND SYMPHONY: IN CONCERT—

el Thunder de Oklahoma City

el entrenador en jefe Gregg
Popovich se reunió (como ha
sido su tradición) con los medios informativos que cubren
la fuente.
Popovich, quien finalizó su
vigésima temporada dirigiendo

San Antonio FC played to a
1-1 draw against OKC Energy
FC at Taft Stadium on May 15.
The team earned a point on the
road with a goal from Danny
Garcia early in the first half. The
match marked the first time the
two clubs faced each other this
season.
“Every point is precious in this
league,” said SAFC Head Coach
Darren Powell. “I thought the
guys fought very hard until
the final whistle, showed good
character and desire tonight
against a very good team from
Oklahoma City.”
The first goal of the match
came in the 18th minute when
an SAFC attack culminated with
forward Shawn Chin finding
Garcia at the top of the box to
slot the ball into the back of the
net, giving the visitors the 1-0
lead. The goal was Garcia’s
second for the club as Chin
notched his first assist.
“The goal was from a really
good team play,” said Garcia.
“It was probably one of our best
passing sequences of the season,
and I am glad I put it away.”
Nearly 20 minutes later, OKC
leveled the score 1-1 after forward Danni König got behind
the defense with a through-ball
and found himself one-on-one
with SAFC goalkeeper Josh
Ford. The goal was König’s first
of the season.
SAFC had a great chance
early in the match when Manolo
Sanchez’ shot found the side
netting following a breakaway.
OKC had a handful of chances
as well, forcing saves from Ford
and defender Stephen McCarthy
as the Texas native was forced to
clear a shot off the line.
The second half of the match
remained scoreless despite quality chances from both squads
with neither team able to find
the winning goal by the final
whistle. SAFC and OKC Energy
FC will meet for the second consecutive time at Toyota Field on
Saturday, May 21.

selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Men’s At-Large
Team.
The three honorees bring St.
Mary’s year-long total to 15
Academic All-District selections.
It marks a school record for a
single school year, surpassing
the old mark of 10, which was
set last year.
The award recognizes the
nation’s top student athletes for
their combined performances
athletically and academically,
with the winners being divided
into eight geographic districts
across the United States and Canada. Students must have at least
a 3.30 cumulative grade-point
average while also demonstrating
legitimate athletic credentials to

Dockery has maintained a
3.40 cumulative GPA while
excelling as the Rattlers’ No. 2

Honrando a nuestros
héroes de la nación
en el Día de los Caídos.
Para honrar y apoyar a las familias de militares quienes han hecho
sacrificos extremos por la libertad de nuestra nación, H-E-B financia

35 Aniversario de Tejano Conjunto Festival

Rosedale Park, escenario
que ha visto pasar a todos los
ídolos de la música tejana, se
iluminó por tres días en la celebración del 35 aniversario de
Tejano Conjunto Festival en el
que participaron 32 grupos de
San Antonio, Seguin, Dallas,
Laredo, Houston, Edinburge,
Jourdanton, Lubbock, Mercedes, Eagle Pass y Corpus
Christi.
Durante los días 13,14 y
15 de mayo, los aficionados
tuvieron la oportunidad de
escuchar, bailar al ritmo de
la música y comprar regalos
y recuerdos de expositores
instalados allí los tres días
del festival, sin olvidar degustar de la tradicional comida
tex-mex.
La celebración del 35 aniversario de dicho festival es
una producción de Guadalupe
Cultural Art Center, que preside Celina Peña como Board
Chair en una directiva de 12
miembros. Jerry Ruiz es el
actual director ejecutivo en
una administración con 12
directivos en los diferentes
departamentos culturales y
administrativos de GCAC.

Emocionado con su trofeo, R.C. Buford agradeció el respaldo de la afición y empleados de la gerencia general.
R.C. Buford, gerente general y presidente de franquicias de la empresa Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E), en la
temporada NBA 2013-14 en la que Spurs se coronó campeón, derrotando en 5 partidos al Heat de Miami, fue elegido
como el NBA Basketball Executive of the Year por haber estructurado excelente roster que le dio a San Antonio
su quinto trofeo de campeón en la NBA. Ahora, en su 14vo año al frente de la gerencia general, R.C. Buford por
segunda ocasión resultó elegido como el ganador del 2015-16 NBA Basketball Executive of the Year Award (Premio
al Ejecutivo del Año en la NBA), cuyo trofeo recibió oficialmente en breve ceremonia del quinto partido semifinal
Spurs vs. Thunder (AT&T Center). En la elección participaron un selecto grupo de colegas (gerentes de equipos de la
NBA), quienes le otorgaron 77 puntos, luego de haber recibido 9 votos en primer lugar de los 29 sufragios aportados
en la delicada elección. En segundo lugar quedó Neil Olshey de Trail Blazers de Portland y en el tercer escaño fue
elegido Bob Myers del campeón Warriors de Golden State, quien en la temporada 2014-15 recibió el precioso trofeo
dedicado al administrador de franquicia en el mejor baloncesto del mundo. Buford compartió su emoción y trofeo
con ejecutivos de la administración Silver & Black. La elección fue basada en las 67 victorias de Spurs en la pasada

Williams Loston estuvo acompañada de personal académico y administrativo, con quienes compartió crédito por el
reconocimiento que Stars le dio a St. Philip’s. “Seguiremos adelante apoyando eventos en pro de nuestra comunidad,
con Stars hemos venido participando en diversas actividades y eventos, en los que promovemos registro colegial y
eventos comunitarios”, dijo la doctora Williams Loston.

Hot dogs reign high at ‘Frank’

Frank has the one thing that
San Antonio has been missing
in our culinary culture: hot
dogs.
The Austin-based restaurant
opened its doors on the first
Friday of March and business
has not stopped since. When
looking for a second location,
owners Daniel Northcutt and
Geoff Preveto fell in love with
San Antonio and decided to
make it an original restaurant
– not a duplicate.
“We do not want to bring
Austin to San Antonio,” Preveto
told La Prensa. “We did not
bring any chefs or ingredients
from another city because we
wanted San Antonio to have its
own flavor… the main menu is
going to be the same menu as
Austin because that is what we
have trained everyone up on.
But once they start rolling in the
specials the way the menu has
evolved in Austin, there will be
different items on the menu.”
La Prensa recently stopped by
Frank to try the mouthwatering
main course, drinks and side
dishes that will give many a
reason to visit downtown and
appreciate a restaurant that specializes in hot dogs. The prices
will also keep you coming back.

to try was their drink menu that

tions to sip from, including the
Draft Margarita. With Tequila
Blanco, Mathilde XO and lime,
it was strong enough in taste
with enough alcohol to keep
you relaxed.
Next came out the Reuben
Fries, an appetizer consisting
of waffle fries loaded with Swiss
cheese, sauerkraut, corned beef
and thousand island dressing.
Although I was a bit skeptical
of the Thousand Island dressing
and sauerkraut, it did pair well
with the hint of sweet and sour.
I promise, these fries will get
you to come back. What would
these hot dogs be without their
abundant side dishes and cold
beverages worth sipping on?
Finally, the main course arrived. The Chicago Dog is a hot
dog that you would only find in
a larger city or homemade. The
Frank way offers a Poppy seed
bun, 100 percent Vienna Beef,
pickle spear, tomatoes, onions,
Day-Glo relish, sport peppers,
celery salt and mustard. I must
say that adding sour ingredients
and vegetables dress the hot
dog to be desirable.
Many have never seen a hot
dog with macaroni and cheese,
but at Frank, they have successfully made one of the best
dishes on the menu. The Notorious P.I.G is custom-made
with smoked pork, bacon,
jalapeño, sage sausage dressed
with mac n’ cheese and Dr.
Doppelgänger BBQ sauce on
a Frank bun. There is enough
spice and a meaty substance
all in one difficult bite that is
worth trying.
This was ultimately one of
my favorite menus to try because Frank has proven how
to create a variety of delicious
hot dogs, whether you want
something heavy, light or even
vegan.
“We are glad to be here in
San Antonio. We took a local
product to expand on, giving us
the opportunity to collaborate
with chefs and restaurants.
You will see Frank in more
art and music events, allowing
our chefs to bring creativity to
the table and just have fun,”
concluded Northcutt.

Five ways we remember Emilio Navaira

2016 had not been kind to
this last generation’s bout of
musicians as Emilio Navaira
is added to the rising amount
of music legends taken from
us too soon. This loss hit
very close to home. San
Antonio is home to a music
scene where unique sounds
and genres are created, and
that of Tejano is one of the
oldest and Navaira was at
the forefront of it.
On the day after the 35th
Annual Tejano and Conjunto
Festival, Navaira succumbed
to a massive heart attack in
his home of New Braunfels.
Though mostly known for
the impact Navaira set on
not only the local, but global
Tejano scene; he helped
shaped the genre itself, earning himself the ranking of
legend.
Through a rocky past,
Emilio has a managed to
keep his place holding alongside other San Antonio legends such as Flaco Jimenez,
Little Joe y La Familia and
Vicki Carr. We here at La
Prensa reflect upon his death
and remember the absolute
best of Navaira, as we share
our top five moments of
Emilio Navaira:
1. The main way Navaira
touched our lives was by
helping shape Tejano music
itself and shedding light on
the music capabilities San
Antonio has to offer. Born
and raised on the South Side
of San Antonio, Navaira and
his band, Rio Band rose to
fame in the late 80s early
90s, as did the genre of Tejano itself. Though eventually
making the English album
cross over into country that
earned him the title of “the
Garth Brooks of Tejano”,
a make or break move for
most musicians (in this case
turned out to be pretty successful), Navaira never forgot his roots and where he
came from. In an interview
with a newspaper called The
Monitor 1995, he is quoted
saying, “I’m from San Antonio and always will be. We
must be proud of where we
came from and who are to
make it anywhere.”
2. On top of a plethora of
chart topping hits including
his first country music single
called “It’s Not The End of
The World” that ended up
on the Top 30 on Country
music charts in 1995, perhaps Navaira’s most notable
accomplishment was winning a Grammy in 2002 in
the category of Best Tejano
Album for his album “Acuérdate” and then again in 2007
at the Latin Grammy Awards
for the same category but for
the album “De Nuevo.”
3. Navaira’s talent not only
helped accumulate many
awards and accomplishments,
it helped him gain national
attention and sponsorships as
well. In the 90s, companies
such as Coca-Cola and Wrangler Jeans used his songs in
various TV commercials and
perhaps the biggest was Miller
Lite who pleaded with Navaira
to use the title of his first country album “Life if Good” as
their slogan for a good couple
of years.
4. It’s one thing to be
remembered for specific
songs, but to coin your own
signature dance move is on
a different level. In the late
80s, Emilio and his brother
Raúl were in Rio Band and
were known for their silly
onstage antics and a dance
move that became a fun craze
in the Tejano scene known as
the “Emilio Shuffle” which is
stilled used as a favorite Tejano dance move till this day.
5. Perhaps only a moment
that can remembered fondly
by the people who were in
attendance, but is still a pinnacle in Tejano music history is the concert he shared
with other late Tejano star
Selena. It isn’t every day the
King and Queen of Tejano
are under the same roof
and perhaps that is why
the Alamodome was filled
with 30,000 people after
only housing one concert
there previously. Both were
at the height of their career
and in that moment it was
important to see just how
far Tejano music had come.

That is the word that comes to mind right now...and that’s not even close. When I was a
kid I thought everyone had a father who was admired by millions. I thought it was normal
that my dad would walk onto a stage and wow an audience so easily. And I thought it was
normal to have parents that would literally do anything for their children. Parents who
gave all of their love and support to me so that I could live a happy life. As I grew older I
realized that I had an extraordinary childhood.
Dad,
It’s because of you that I’m always looking out for the people around me. It’s because of
you that I live life to its absolute fullest. It’s because of you that I travel the world and play
my music with such enormous passion. You ARE a great man. You will live forever in my
heart, in the hearts of millions, and through your beautiful music. Thank you for always
being you. “We’re the same. All I ever wanted to do was play music all over the world...
We’re the same...” That’s what you would tell me. I only hope that I can be half as great of
a man as you one day. I’m going to miss you Daddy. I know I’ll see you in the sky when
it’s my time to be called home.

La música tejana se encuentra de luto por haber perdido
una de sus más grandes estrellas: Emilio Navaira.
Navaira, nativo de San Antonio, falleció el lunes 16 de
mayo por la noche en su casa
de New Braunfels a causa de
un paro cardiaco. Navaira
tenía 53 años de edad.
La noticia ha conmocionado a los amantes del género
musical del Sur de Texas y
muchos de sus seguidores,
incluyendo famosos admiradores, han expresado sus
condolencias a través de las
redes sociales.
Navaira será recordado
por llevar el género musical
tejano al amplio gusto musical de la nación en la década
de 1990. También conocido
como “El Rey de la Música
Tejana” y “El Rey del Rodeo”,
Navaira junto con Selena
Quintanilla fueron las dos
estrellas que popularizaron el
género tejano. Ellos, incluso,
grabaron una canción a dueto: “Tú robaste mi corazón”.
Recientemente había encabezado una serie de presentaciones, incluyendo un concierto en Monterrey para el

Navaira cantó, tanto en inglés como en español, desde
música country al género tejano. Entre sus éxitos figuran
“Por siempre unidos” y “It´s
not the end of the world”,
“Lucero de mi alma”, “Cómo
le haré”, entre otros.
A lo largo de su carrera
grabó varios álbumes como
solista y ganó varios Tejano
Music Awards.
En el año 2002 ganó un
Grammy en la categoría
de Best Tejano Album por
“Acuérdate”.
