Twentieth in Ordinary OrdinaryTime Time TwentiethSunday Sunday in THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophe c response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Le er to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can s ll persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of si ng at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a bap sm that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficul es of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salva on in Christ. Offertory Collection July 30/31: $14,903.65 In today’s second reading, St. Paul encourages us not to grow weary or lose heart, but to persevere in following Jesus. Our willingness to give of ourselves, even in the face of conflict and division, is one way to measure our discipleship. Next week’s second collection is for the support of St. Mary School. MINISTRY OF THE WEEK THE THRIFT SHOP It is important for our parish community to reach out to those less fortunate in our local city community. The clothing and small household items, jewelry, and other items that are donated to the Thrift Shop help not only those in our parish, but in the community as well. All of the proceeds from the Thrift Shop go to St. Mary School to help with necessary upkeep and improvements. The Thrift Shop is like any retail store. Volunteers cheerfully greet customers and help them find things in the store and ring up their sales. The workers also get the donations ready for display and sale to the public. The store is located at 38 Robinwood Drive and is open Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There are two ways to help the Thrift Shop. One is by donating items to the shop and the other is by volunteering as a worker. Donations can be dropped off at the Thrift Shop during their business hours. If you are interested in volunteering your time as a worker, give the parish office a call at 243-3742. Either way, you are helping those in our community. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE TILMA Presently, the Tilma is being shared each week by parish families. If you wish to have the Tilma in your home for one week and pray the Rosary contact Lancy Colaco at 850-244-0651. August1416-August August - August 2022 FR. JOB OPPORTUNITY-ST. MARY SCHOOL Applications are now being accepted at the school office for Substitute Teachers and Bus Drivers. Call the school office at 243-8913, Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 3:30 for more information. From Mary Pickard Director of Religious Ed. Parents, you are the first educators of your children and you continue that job all your lives. I would like to share with you some quotations from a book of meditations from St. John Baptist de la Salle, one of the patron saints of teachers. Do not forget to help them acquir e gentleness, patience, love and respect for their parents, and all the conduct that is proper to a Christian child, in a word, all that our religion demands of them. In what ways do I teach my students gentleness, patience, love and respect?
