Dear Witch Hazel Families,
Welcome back! I hope all of you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward with enthusiasm to the new
school year! It will be wonderful to see you on September 8! I am excited to begin my first year as principal of
Witch Hazel. It is my hope that we can continue to work together to create a child-centered community of lifelong learners where everyone teaches and everyone learns in a safe environment. Together we will continue to
create and support this vision and provide excellent educational opportunities for your children. It takes the entire
community for students to achieve at high levels.
Enclosed, you will find key information that will help you in preparation for the first day of school.
•
School begins on Tuesday, September 8 for grades 1-6. Kindergarten begins on Thursday, September 10.
School start and end times have changed this year! School will begin at 8:00 am and end at 2:20 pm.
Students may enter the building for breakfast starting at 7:30 am. There is no student supervision
available prior to the 7:30 am time. On Wednesday’s beginning, September 16, school will begin at 8:00
am and end at 1:50 pm.

Please join us for our “Meet the Teacher/Back to School Night “on Thursday, September 3 from 5:30 to
7:30 pm. Students will be able to meet teachers, bring in school supplies, and enjoy a “school lunch”
BBQ for dinner in our cafeteria.
New this year, the District Transportation Department is offering an online application for parents to
access routing and scheduling information, determine walk zones, and more. Please refer to the myBus
insert in this packet for instructions on how to access the system. You will not be receiving bus route or
walker status notification by mail this year. If you have questions, please contact the Transportation
Department at 503-844-1123.

¡Bienvenidos! Espero que todos hayan tenido un verano maravilloso y que esperen con entusiasmo por inicio del nuevo
año escolar. Será maravilloso verlos el 8 de septiembre. Tengo un gran entusiasmo por comenzar mi primer año como
director de Witch Hazel. Espero continuar trabajando juntos para crear ser una comunidad centrada en los niños y en
su proceso de aprendizaje, donde todos enseñan y todos aprenden en un ambiente seguro. Juntos, continuaremos
creando y apoyando esta visión y ofreciendo unas excelentes oportunidades educativas para sus hijos. Para que los
estudiantes alcancen altos niveles de rendimiento, es necesario el trabajo de la comunidad entera.
Adjunto a esta carta, encontrarán importante información que les ayudará a prepararse para el primer día de escuela.

Para los grados 1 al 6, la escuela comienza el martes 8 de septiembre. Para el kínder, comienza el jueves 10 de
septiembre. Este año, el horario de entrada y salida de la escuela han cambiado. Las clases comienzan a las

• We need your current information to ensure we can reach you in the event of an emergency.
• Please log on to your ParentVUE account and review your information to see if we have your correct address,
phone numbers, and e-mail address (your school can provide you with ParentVUE registration information).
• The number you indicate as your PRIMARY contact phone number is the one that will be called by our autodialer system for announcements, emergency messages or when your child is absent.
• If you also wish to receive these notifications via e-mail or text, having current information in our system is the

• E-mail addresses can be updated by parents within ParentVUE. To change phone numbers, home addresses, or
if you need assistance, please call or stop by the school.
• We need to know about permissions for your student.
• Photos, Website, Media, etc. We love to showcase the great things our students are doing by displaying photos
and write-ups on our District website and social media pages. We do understand, however, that there are situations in which a parent might not want their child’s photo taken. Please know that our STANDARD PROCESS
IS TO ALLOW PHOTOS. If you are ok with this, no action is necessary. If you want to opt your child out of
photos, please fill out a Release of Information Opt Out Form, available on our website under Parents/Back-ToSchool Information or from your school’s office, and return it to your school’s office for entry into Synergy.
• Statewide Summative Assessments. The District administers statewide summative assessments to students in
grades 3-8 and 11 each spring. House Bill 2655 now requires districts to alert parents and adult students that they
can choose to excuse a student from these assessments by submitting to the school or district a completed form
established by the Oregon Department of Education. Additional information will be provided as soon as it is
available.

SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION
The Board of Directors adopted the
districtwide school calendar on March
17, 2015. The first days of school for
students will be:
• Tuesday, Sept. 8—Grades 1-6, 7, 9
and all new, non-kindergarten students.
• Wednesday, Sept. 9—Grades 8 and
10-12
• Thursday, Sept. 10—Kindergarten
The Hillsboro School District welcomes and appreciates all volunteers
and encourages your involvement in
our schools! If you are interested in
volunteering, please complete the online volunteer application and criminal background check authorization
on our website. The process only
takes a few minutes and, once you’re
cleared, you’re good for two years!

School is projected to conclude on
Thursday, June 16, 2016. However,
in case inclement weather requires
the District to close schools during

announced through the District website, newsletters, and the news media.

días, las graduaciones de las preparatorias no se verán afectadas. Cualquier
cambio al calendario escolar, será anunciado a través del sitio web del Distrito,
de los boletines de noticias, y de los me-
dios noticiosos.

Hillsboro School District Transportation Department presents its
new online application—myBus!
Parents and guardians can now determine if their student is
in a designated walk zone or on a bus route using the myBus
website. If your student takes the bus, you can retrieve routes,
schedules, pickup or dropoff stops, and other information.
Simply use your student’s school ID and birthdate to log in to the website!
Access to myBus will begin August 20. At the beginning of the school year, as
Transportation finalizes bus routes, changes will be automatically posted—be
sure to check myBus regularly! myBus also will be updated as students change
enrollment or are approved for alternate transportation. myBus is a quick and
easy way to check your student’s bus information at any time.
Check out myBus by scanning the QR code with your smartphone or by
visiting the website. If you don’t have internet access or need further
information, Transportation staff will continue to be available to assist you.
