+ FRANCOISE VANNERAUD 1984. There are two subjects, above others, to which Françoise Vanneraud has devoted her work. One, of a thematic order, takes on a leitmotif quality: the landscape and its experimentation, which has and continues to be treated from different perspectives that show a constellation of new sensibilities and uses for this genre and, above all, a respect for that reality or magnitude. Thus, the landscape has approached, in each according occasion, analogous notions such as territory, nature, or historic landscape (history and microhistories therein included). The other subject is of a formal order. Drawing is in Vanneraud’s core discipline. Nevertheless, the French artist remains immersed in a tireless process of expanding the medium. In this way, she has exhibited this medium in dialogue with others (video, for example) and has carried it into the installation, the environment or objectification (three-dimensionality of sculpture). In fact, we should note how she has consistently exercised the expanded drawing; that is, she has used every resource and material that allows her to draw (to graphically describe something), as, for example, simulating the outline of the mountains or a graph or diagram by cutting the edges of wood, books or glass. Each project becomes a new opportunity to try to raise some questions or hypotheses about the interstitial time that makes up the trip, the same that is marked by the traveler’s experience, his memories, his relationship with oblivion, doubt or the notion of reality. She’s attracted by an interested in complementary borders between the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the random, the outward and return routes, to finally question our relationship to life, the idea of presence and absence, memory and reminiscence, the passage time. In Insights of passage, Vanneraud delves further into some aspects such as transit, the voyage, the road, the planned journey, and the construction of the landscape by way of experimentation and in connection with it, consequently introducing an important phenomenological-perceptual hue. Foreseen and tangential matters just before the journey or migratory movements, are dear to her previous works. There is always a displacement, an invitation to ponder, to wander, to travel, to transport us, to take us to another place. In short, to discover. The discovery of the landscape and a certain scopic sense (a direct allusion to the participation of sight, the pointing to the white of gazing and the channeling the gaze through cracks and spaces as openings or cavities) characterize these drawings and, in part, a number of works in Insights of passage. The material, which acquires a mountainous form through several layers, thanks to its translucent nature, is permeable to our vision, turning the landscape transparent to our eyes. Although Vanneraud’s work has not leaned directly into ecology and yes more to the human experience in the landscape, to how it can be connoted by our presence as a historical stage and that condenses episodes or events, it is likely to surface the notion of human beings as the main agent of change. The installation consists of approximately 350 small-format drawings, attached to the wall with pins, made from images of immigrants found in the press or the internet the artist change and redraws. Placed in a row on the wall, the drawings take shape through the accumulation of these small pieces evoking memory, absence, travel and human construction. Accompanying the figures and in front of them, a panoramic table shows a landscape of mountains that represents the number of immigrants from the year 1990 through 2010, represented by the height of the mountains. Formalmente, la estructura evoca el aspecto de un disco duro informático, donde una infinidad de datos se acumulan “Cartografía turbia” is a Project developed around the district of Tetuán, in Madrid, during the year 2012 and with the sponsorship of the center of contemporary art “Matadero”, Madrid. This artistic work invites the spectator to reflect about human memory and its transmission, by building a work based solely on the stories that people convey the author. The project is based on the mismatches that human memory may suffer depending on the various parameters inherent in life, such as the specifics of personal time/space, background or emotions, as well as questions concerning the interpretation, in this case graphical, of how can memory be transmitted. To perform the project, it was proposed to fifty people to answer with a text the following question: “How was the district of Tetuán between the years 1940 and 1980?, describe to me the architecture, sounds, atmosphere, people, feelings of the neighborhood at that time. Based solely on these inputs, the author makes graphic representations through drawings to capture the vision, memories and emotions that each person had on the neighborhood. Despite the apparent simplicity of the experiment, it carries the germ of a myriad of issues, paradoxes and pitfalls that are revealed as constitutive elements of any representation. The goal is not only to study these complex problems but also to find formal solutions as alternatives to traditional modes of representation. The installation consists of 22 layers (each reflecting a vivid memory) that accumulate vertically. Formally, the structure evokes the look of a computer hard drive, where countless data is accumulated on top of each other, hiding the oldest to show only the most recent. An epic of humanity is a research project on historical memory. In this project I use the oral testimony of exiles from the civil war to build an installation, consisting of a mountain of paper with natural roots, on which roads made of experiences are drawn and lost, roads of hope for a better future. The notion of fragility that conveys the paper is reinforced by wavering lines of testimonies that evoke the paths taken by the exiles when fleeing. These memories are hard to read and many words are lost due to paper wrinkles, this links with memory’s nature, inaccurate, personal, somehow secret, but lived deep into the bowels. Hope seems fragile is an installation composed of several drawings, framed in passe-partout and attached to the wall by a wooden stick, allowing the work to have multiple depths and slopes. The installation starts in the floor, to rise along the wall.
