The Redemptorists
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Rector
Very Rev. Joseph Tizio, C.Ss.R.
This Monday, June 20th is the first day of summer and the longest
day of the year, the day in which we have the most daylight. The
change of seasons has always been a time of spiritual reflection
not just for us Christians but for people of all faiths. God speaks
through nature. God tells us a little of who he is through nature.
So, what does summer tell us about God and the spiritual journey? First of all, God is light and in God there is no darkness (1 John 1:5). The first day of
summer with the longest daylight reminds us that God is light and to know Jesus Christ is
to live in the light. In John’s Gospel Jesus proclaims “While I am in the world, I am the light
of the world” (John 9:5). To live in sin is to live in the darkness, to live in Christ is to live
in the light. Beyond that, we are commanded by Christ to “Let your light shine brightly
before all so that they might see your good works” (Matthew 5:16). We are called not to
hide our faith but proclaim it.
Secondly, the long hot and humid days of summer tend to slow us down a little. Summer
is a time when people think about vacation, resting a little and trying to get away. The
spiritual life is not always a life of activity, movement, and work. Sometimes, the spiritual
life calls upon us to rest, relax, and reflect. In Mark 6:31 Jesus invites the disciples to
go off with him to a deserted place where they can rest. We read in the scriptures that
frequently, Jesus would go off by himself to spend the night in prayer. Summer reminds
us that rest and a slower pace are certainly part of the spiritual journey. Finally, summer
reminds us to enjoy God’s gift of creation and to care for the world that God has given to
us. May these days of summer be a time for you to grow more closely to the warmth of
God’s love!

estamos llamados a no ocultar nuestra fe, sino a proclamarla.

We are not very good at “denying ourselves” in our society. Our
current economic situation is evidence of what happens when
people think they can have everything they want. Jesus calls us to
set our own personal “wants” aside so that we have the resources to
follow Him instead.
