Practical Teaching Tip
14
Don’t get into power struggles that escalate. Adolescents
typically want to make their mark by attempting to show you
they’re in control. Focus on what they are doing wrong, not how
they are acting. You don’t have to win, you just have to ensure
class or school rules are adhered to.

That’s the case in this unusual house. You can skateboard across the floor
and up the walls and on the ceiling. You can even skateboard over the
table, the sofa and the fridge. It’s better than going to a skate park!
For champion skateboarder Pierre André Senizergues, this dream is
becoming a reality. Designer Gil Le Bon Delapointe and architect François
Perrin are building his dream house in Malibu, California. This house is as
big as a normal house, but its design is more unusual. There are three
different ‘spaces’: one for the living room, dining room and kitchen; one
for the bedroom and bathroom; and one for skateboard practice. There’s
all the usual furniture, but it’s specially designed for skateboarding. And
there are fabulous views over the ocean!

Practical Teaching Tip
When you get students doing speaking activities, you have to
make sure your instructions are clear. To do this, it’s important
to break them down into stages and make sure the students
have a very clear goal at the end. I check that students know
what language they will need in advance as it’s very difficult to
fix this once students have started an activity.

Practical Teaching Tip
An important area in Learning to learn is to encourage students to practise
different ways of remembering and recycling on their own. For example, you
can encourage them to use mind maps to recycle vocabulary that they have
already seen in class, taking a lexical set that you have used in context.

When doing a writing task, ask your students to focus on
details rather than trying to cover a broad topic and get them
to develop a specific idea. It’s the details that make a piece of

Blended Learning
Using Technology in and beyond the Language Classroom
Blended Learning is an ideal companion for any teacher interested in the use of technology
in the language classroom. It provides a practical, common-sense overview of what is
currently available, unlocking some of the confusing jargon for those with little experience
of technology while providing ideas and suggestions for new and innovative ways to use
technology for enthusiasts.
Barney Barrett is the author of business English teaching materials and an occasional
website builder. During his ten years as an English language teacher he has continually
tried out ways of using new technology with his learners.

CLIL methodology. He is a frequent presenter and facilitator at CLIL events.
David Marsh was part of the team that conducted groundwork leading to the launch of
the term CLIL in 1994. He has extensive experience of capacity-building for CLIL in a range
of countries and designing teacher development programmes.
María Jesús Frigols has coordinated CLIL implementation in secondary and vocational
education in Valencia. She is also a consultant to the Boards of Education of several
regions in Spain and is the author of a number of ESP didactic guides.
