Angelina Jolie finances girls’ school in Afghanistan – This school and subsequent schools will be funded by a line of the film star’s own signature jewelry on sale in the US. Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, funded the girls-only primary school outside Kabul where there are many refugees. Jolie also funded a girls’ school in eastern Afghanistan that opened in 2010, according to the UNCHR. Patriarchal mindset causes inequality Bollywood actor – Amir Khan was accompanying David Cameron, the British Prime Minister who met students at a girl’s college in New Delhi. Khan, who has been campaigning for gender equalities in the country, says the patriarchal mindset of the people causes gender inequality. “The patriarchal thinking, the feeling that men are superior, is to blame for the status of women in society,” the Bollywood actor told the media. Khan, who has been at the forefront of a debate on gender equality in his various television shows, said most queries from young women were related to their low status in society and how they can best use their education. “We have to deal with the problem in a mature manner. We first have to stop the girl child being killed,” the actor said. Yet the region is much more than these stereotypical images portray. The rich culture, resilience, and traditional hospitality of this region, and especially the numerous voices of peace and tolerance often go unheard. The loud noise of violence may have forced SIGNIS to cancel its Congress in Beirut in October 2013, but we remain steadfast in our support for the peoples of the Middle East, and in our belief in the many media outlets and events that give voice to the resilience and courage of their voices of peace. Alvito de Souza Secretario General / Secretary General / Secrétaire général 4 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2013 In December 2010, a young Tunisian street vendor burnt himself alive. His action triggered a series of events that eventually led to the overthrow of the Tunisian, Egyptian and Libyan regimes. In Democracy’s Fourth Wave? Digital Media and the Arab Spring, Philip Howard and Muzammil Hussain argue that social media played a decisive role in spreading this “Arab Spring”. They argue that authoritarian regimes were accustomed to controlling traditional media but were unable to keep up with the rapid pace of Twitter and Facebook. By contrast, other researchers point out that social media’s power was limited to organizing protests and failed to help create a stable government after the uprisings. This debate highlights the transformation of the media across the Middle East. For example, the huge growth in ownership of mobile phones has transformed the ability of great numbers of people to communicate easily and rapidly. Qatar, for example, has at least 2.3 million mobile phones in a country of 2 million people. Internet users in the region have risen from just over 3 million in 2000 to 90 million in June, 2012. Qatar (86%), Bahrain (77%), Kuwait (74%), UAE (70%) and Israel (70%) have the highest levels of penetration. Arab audiences and the media In spite of these changes, there is relatively little authoritative research on how Arab audiences actually use the media—both old and new. An exception is a recent study by the Northwestern University in Qatar which asked people in eight Arab countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Qatar, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the UAE) for their opinion on the media. The survey found that television still remains the most important source of news and information in all countries, except Bahrain and Qatar. Majorities in five countries (Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and Bahrain) were positive about the quality of news reporting and media credibility. The Lebanese were more sceptical about the quality of news reporting and in Egypt and Tunisia, the public was generally sceptical of all media. Cover story Media in the Middle East More than 90% of Internet users in these countries used social networking sites. About 94% of social network users were on Facebook, more than 50% were active on Twitter, and 46% employed Google+. Participants spent an average of 3.2 hours a day on social networks. Freedom of speech and media control The tension between freedom of speech and media control across the region has been given a new dimension by the growth of the Internet and social networks. Citizen journalists reporting via social media played a major role during the upheavals in Egypt and Tunisia. They had great credibility. Today, conflicts in Syria, Bahrain, Palestine or Turkey are also reported through social media but audiences are becoming more sceptical of mobile phone video footage coming from, often unnamed, diverse sources. The Northwestern University survey found that majorities in seven countries (and a large minority of Egyptians) believed people should be able to express their opinions, even controversial ones, online. However, paradoxically, asked whether countries should regulate the Internet more tightly, there was considerable support for government surveillance. dictators and authoritarian regimes, but not the media regulatory systems”. Media: unifying and fragmenting Over the past decade the spread of the Internet, as well as cross border satellite Arabic news channels such as Al-Jazeera, has opened opportunities for people, especially the young, to become aware of different ideas and cultures and to experience a wide range of entertainment. Oren Kessler of the Middle East Quarterly observed that Al Jazeera had been one of the principal beneficiaries of the Arab uprisings. According to Kessler “Viewers are praising the English and Arabic channels’ comprehensive coverage of the revolts” in the Middle East. He also noted that in 1996 it was the first Arabic station to let Israelis appear as on-air guests, speaking in Hebrew, and though this was only in short interviews, “many Arabic viewers were stunned, having never before heard an Israeli speak—much less in his or her native language”. In fact, some commentators have spoken of the ‘unifying’ effect of Al Jazeera. By providing an Arab perspective on events across the region, it challenged the dominance of foreign language (French and English) broadcasters. In contrast to this potential unifying effect is the fragmentation of the media along political and sectarian lines. Preachers and groups of every shade of religious opinion have taken to the airwaves and the websites, blogs, podcasts and YouTube videos to promote their own brand of Islam. In an effort to promote a more multi-faith understanding and tolerance, Christian broadcasters like Sat 7 and Télé Lumière in Lebanon have consciously embraced an ecumenical and open approach to all faiths. In Egypt,Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Sunni Muslim world, plans a satellite channel to fight extremist ideologies and promote moderation and tolerance. In such a complex, diverse, and conflict-ridden region as the Middle East, there is a great need for credible media that can report across sectarian lines. The Middle East waits to see if a new generation of media entrepreneurs, reporters, film-makers, producers and citizen journalists can meet that need and build bridges of understanding and tolerance. Jim McDonnell Journalists and the press are harassed nearly everywhere. Recently Al Jazeera and nine other TV channels had their licenses revoked in Iraq, allegedly for promoting sectarianism. The Turkish Prime Minister recently launched a fierce attack on Twitter as a carrier of subversion. Film-makers have been exiled and imprisoned in Iran and battle censorship everywhere. Censorship and control are also problems for community media and frequencies are mostly limited to governmental and commercial media providers. At the second annual conference for community media in the region, held in Cairo between February 25th-27th, Daoud Kuttab, the director of Community Media Network commented, “The Arab Spring has witnessed the fall of SIGNIS Media – N°2/2013 5 Cover story The Franciscan Multimedia Center is the multimedia and television centre of the Custody of the Holy Land, established in January 2008 with the aim of showing the beauty and wealth of the Holy Land through the production of a weekly news broadcast, meditations and reportage from the Holy Land. Communication has always been important for the Custody of the Holy Land. Since the times in which it was the only Latin rite Catholic representative in the Holy Land, the Custody has been the spokesman for the Christian community and Ambassador of the Holy See, in close cooperation with the rest of the Franciscan Order. In more recent times, the Custody has been able to adapt its work of giving and spreading information to various and more modern means of communication: from books and reviews to Internet sites, and even the recent creation of the video production centre of the Franciscan Multimedia Center. It produces Terra Santa News, which is a weekly video news report, rich in information, that “tells the story” of the Holy Land, between faith, history, and current events. The programme, about 15 minutes long, is intended for television broadcast. Currently produced in 4 languages, the Terra Santa News is broadcast each week by the most important Catholic stations in the world. Among the productions there are documentaries and reports concerning the Christians in the Holy land and the life of the local Church. This section is dedicated to the “living stones” and the courageous journey of the Christian minority in a situation of conflict and division; the difficulties and hardships, but also the hope and faith of the “little flock” living in the land of Christ. Other productions are centred on information and interviews on relevant current or social events, and signs of solidarity and encounter, hidden in the midst of the difficulties of daily life for Israelis and Palestinians; events and realities that speak of dialogue and coexistence in a complex society, hoping for peace... despite everything. The main winner was film director Wael Ihsan’s drama Sa’a we Nos (An Hour and a Half) with 7 awards. It is a fiction film about the al-Ayat train accident in 2002 in which 1,500 passengers lost their lives. It gives an insight into current socio-political events in Egypt. The thriller Mosawer Ateel (Murdered Photographer) obtained five awards. In the TV category Yehia El Fakharani won the award for best leading actor in the drama series El Khawagah Abdel Kader which is set in Egypt during the Second World War. Leila Elwy won the award for best leading actress in the TV series Napoleon wal Mahroussa. The Centre’s chairman, Fr. Boutros Daniel, honoured a number of stars such as Elham Chahine, Hamdy Ahmad, Mahmoud Yasseen, film director Dawoud Abdel Sayed and actress Nadia Lofty for their collective work and achievements. The Egyptian Catholic Cinema Centre, organized by the Franciscans is the oldest centre of its kind in the Arab world. The centre’s selection of films is based on the belief that art has a mission in people’s lives. Its film festival is not only the oldest in the Arab world but also in Africa. Today its archives and documentation remain essential resources for any serious research on Egyptian cinema. In April 2011 the centre hosted a number of Egyptian artists and media professionals under the slogan “In love for Egypt”, in celebration of the January 25th revolution that deposed President Hosni Mubarak. The celebration explored the new role of the media after the revolution and how it could participate in reshaping Egyptian life. The event was attended by a mix of celebrities, intellectuals, media experts and academics as well as young media professionals. It also featured a documentary entitled The Egyptian Dream Project highlighting the media’s role after the revolution. The attendees stressed that younger generations of artists and media workers should be given greater opportunities as part of an effort to reinvigorate Egypt’s “soft power” that observers say declined under Mubarak. Fr. Boutros Daniel said: “Egyptian youth are actually expressing themselves after the events that recently took place in Egypt for building Egypt. In the past, youth was considered as not having any role in the society or just limiting themselves to entertainment, but now, youth are the ones starting to build Egypt again. This is a real effort that is not aimed at achieving any interest or goal.” GC & Al Ahram www.newspusher.com Cover story Two Christian television stations in Lebanon Télé Lumière means “TV of Light”. It was the first Christian television station in Lebanon, founded in 1991 by a group of committed lay people such as the late Charles Helou (President of Lebanon) and Brother Nour. It has an ecumenical mission. Télé Lumière is not associated with any political party or movement, does not broadcast any political views and does not accept or promote any commercial endorsements. As a non-profit broadcasting station, it survives only through raising donations from its supporters and friends. The Catholic Church has cooperated with this television station since the beginning as it found it one of the best means to promote the principles of justice, love, freedom and human rights; values called for by Christianity everywhere. Télé Lumière is supervised by the Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Lebanon and directed by a committee involving religious leaders from various denominations and a group of laity eager to support this distinguished project. The relationship between the Church and Télé Lumière is regulated in a “cooperation protocol”. As for the Government, it considers Télé Lumière a Christian station, financially independent and having freedom of management and programming controlled only by Church authority. In June 2003, at Pentecost, Télé Lumière celebrated its 12th anniversary as well as the launch of its satellite station Noursat covering Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. One year later, on September 8th, 2004, Noursat began broadcasting in North and South America, Canada and Australia. While many TV channels have become event-oriented, either focusing on terrorism, political turmoil and fanaticism, or are limited to entertainment and scandals, the open strategy of Télé Lumière and Noursat, promoting multi-cultural understanding and religious dialogue, has encouraged many Muslim viewers to watch and participate in the campaigns and programmes strengthening peace, promoting coexistence and opposing immorality, violence and terrorism. After all these years of broadcasting, Télé Lumière and Noursat have become the “daily bread” and hope for the Christian minority in the Middle East and the diaspora as well as a source of peace for many viewers from different denominations. In May 2012 the Jordan Catholic Centre for Studies and Media was founded in Amman. Its goals include the “supervision of the Jordan section of Noursat”, said its director Fr. Rifat Bader. There is also TV Charity, which is an Internet television channel run by CineChrist studio. An apostolate of Lebanese Maronite Missionaries, TV Charity is committed to producing quality programmes that further Christian and moral values and the teachings of the Catholic faith. TV Charity focuses its efforts on religious and pastoral themes. Main show topics include theology, bioethics, education, social issues, daily Church news and intercultural exchange. TV Charity also offers entertainment and special programmes for children and teenagers. Programmes are offered in English and Arabic. TV Charity seeks to provide quality programming for a wide audience.TV Charity, through its Internet broadcasting seeks to reach people who may not have access to regular television, so they too can benefit from a series of programmes that provide entertainment, education, and formation in the Christian faith. The Journal of Middle East Media The Journal of Middle East Media (JMEM) is a journal dedicated exclusively to research on media in the Middle East. The annual journal, which includes both Arabic and English articles, serves as a pioneering forum for studies, critical debates and multiple perspectives about the continuously changing Middle East media. JMEM’s main objective is to enhance and contribute to an inclusive understanding of the issues surrounding the media environment in the Middle East. JMEM welcomes primarily academic submissions, but occasionally draws on related work from the professional community. The JMEM editorial board recognizes the significance of research in several crucial media issues, including: the role of new media in the dissemination of news, information and entertainment; transnational satellite channels and their political, economic, social and cultural impact; theories and techniques of communication policy formation and communication planning; implications of international Arab broadcasting; interconnections among communication and social processes at the global, regional and local levels; women in media and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the media. In one of its latest issues, it reported on a survey of Libyan university students’ perceptions of the credibility of two Libyan and two pan-Arab television channels. The pan-Arab television news channels were given higher credibility scores than the local television news services. Another investigated use of social media, particularly Twitter, by Emirati women and girls, and found that they shifted between Arabic and English and mainly sent messages about their daily activities or observations. They also found that their rapid uptake of Twitter is mainly because of its fast pace and constant accessibility. In this issue there is a review of Arab Media Globalization and Emerging Media Industries. This book, co-authored by Noha Mellor, Nabil Dajani, Khalil Rinnawi, and Muhammad Ayish, provides an overview of different forms of Arab media in the context of globalization. Qatar (86%), Bahréin (77%), Kuwait (74%), E.A.U. 2009 the festival director,Tony Gittens, agreed to host an international SIGNIS jury thanks to the efforts of film and TV producer Frank Frost, a member of the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals (the SIGNIS member in the US). He also serves on the advisory committee for the SIGNIS TVdesk. In 2013 the jury was composed of Frank Frost, Guido Convents, Marjorie Suchocki, Gregory Schenden and Mary Link Frost. The Jury selected 28 out of the 80 films of the programme to take into account for its Prize. This was a difficult task because the programme had many interesting films displaying sensitivity to human values. The final selection revealed a preoccupation with some interesting themes. One was the presence of audiovisual surveillance in modern society and its ethical implications for democracy, or the search for truth. Another strand was how the acts of parents affect their children. A number of films dealt with the Middle East. The festival opened with the controversial drama, Underground: the Julian Assange Story. Assange is wanted by the US government for hacking secret diplomatic documents. The audience in Washington could not only see how Julian Assange, the man behind Wikileaks, had formed his worldview in the early 1990s but it could also hear him in a direct Skype call. This drama is about truth and how governments, even democratic ones, can commit crimes against human and civil rights and conceal them from the public to whom they are accountable. The story is also about the pervasiveness of surveillance and the threats to privacy in this technological age. The pressing need is for more transparency and accountability. The SIGNIS jury were watching the French film Paris under Watch (Aux yeux de tous) by Cédric Jimenez at the very moment the Boston Marathon bombings were happening; an event in which surveillance cameras proved to be significant in helping to identify the perpetrators. On the other hand, Paris under Watch, which got a SIGNIS commendation, is a horrific view of how everyone’s life can be monitored by audiovisual surveillance. One day there is a bomb explosion in an underground station. The government informs the public that the images from the surveillance cameras are lost and that it is a terrorist attack from international extremists. However, a young hacker in Paris is able to break into all the surveillance cameras in town. He discovers that the images not only exist but that he can find out who committed the attack. The hacker starts to act as “God” and intervenes in the lives of those he watches through cameras across the city. In Paris under Watch, the young hacker reveals the truth, using images he has obtained by breaking privacy laws. The government denounce them as false and criminal. They pursue the whistleblower for criminal acts. However, though the truth is not what the government officials had said, the images themselves are not all that they seem and quick but wrong conclusions can easily be drawn. Caught in the Web is a highly entertaining film by Chen Kaige about modern China with its press, cyberworld, portable phones, intrigues and power. The story is about out of context images put on the web and on television which destroy the life of a young successful and beautiful businesswoman. She lives a terrible nightmare because she does not have control over these images of her life. She has to cope with all this while learning that she will soon die of cancer. Perceptions based on images have become reality, which is far away from “the” reality. The film raises many questions about ethics, privacy and the power of images. In the Dutch production The New World by Jaap van Heusden (SIGNIS Prize) the surveillance camera in a detention centre for asylum seekers plays a small but significant role. A middle-aged Dutch woman mourning the loss of her husband, who committed suicide, plays a game with guards at the centre. After looking briefly through the surveillance camera she predicts who will be sent back and who will stay. To her the people in the asylum are not human. GC Washington Searching for the hidden political truth This year SIGNIS organized its 4th jury at the Washington Film Festival (FilmFest DC). In 14 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2013 The New World by Jaap van Heusden Diversidad cultural empathy and warmth, which is also reflected in the aesthetics of the film. However, everything changes one day when she meets an African refugee who is mourning the loss of his wife. As a kind of Christ figure he brings resurrection and helps her to find joy again. Czech director David Ondricek looks back into his country’s history with In the Shadow. This film tells the story of an individual fighting against the state in communist governed Prague in 1953. A police officer discovers how state security forces are detaining and eliminating Jewish citizens less than a decade after the Holocaust in neighbouring Germany. He can remain quiet, but he prefers to denounce these dictatorial policies. He sacrifices himself for his son, who he wants to show what truth and human values are. Almost the same situation can be found in Piazza Fontana: The Italian Conspiracy in which a young Italian police officer wants to fight to uncover the truth of the 1969 terrorist bombing in Milan. In a certain sense the film Hannah Arendt can also fit in this strand. She was a German, and her family was Jewish. In the early 1930s she had to leave Germany to avoid being killed. In the United States she became a famous philosopher and sociologist renowned for her study the The Origins of Totalitarianism. People who have culture, wealth and a certain way of life but do not have power are often victimized in a country without democracy. In this film, Arendt wants to understand Eichmann, the man who was one of the organizers of the Holocaust. She follows his trial and observes him on television in Israel. She shocks the world and the Jewish community by claiming that Eichmann is an ordinary man who is a loyal executor, a zealous government official. He is a person who has lost the capacity for empathy and reflection. He is a product of a system which does not allow you to be creative, to be critical and to think. This means that to avoid dehumanization in modern society young people’s education has to help them to acquire the capacity to think for themselves and to know the difference between good and evil. The film received the SIGNIS award at the Dominican Republic film festival. Fuentes: Daily Tiger & Jurado SIGNIS SIGNIS Media – N°2/2013 15 Cultural Diversity Tribeca Film Festival Generational narcissism and confronting the death of a child Insight Film Festival The SIGNIS prize was given to Home, a film by the Chechen director, Ruslan Magomadov, who explained his approach to the Insight Festival’s Kasia Wiśniowska: “The history told in the film is based on real events. The prototype of the protagonist of the film was my neighbour. Also, the fundamental elements of this story are the events I have witnessed between the years 1994 and 1998 in the city of Grozny. I was 10 years old when the war [in Chechnya] began. We had to hide in the cellar of the house, we had to look for the food in the destroyed city, we had to learn how to survive. I have no favourite director or style. The style itself [of a film] is not so important. Important are the questions that the director raises in his film. At first there needs to be a plan: what the director wants to tell; the style is the next thing to think about. …In a picture there should be only one close-up – at the ending, when the protagonist stops the car. As a common decision of myself and the director of photography, we have decided to shoot the film with the static camera, to emphasize the feeling of melancholy and sadness. Also essential was to keep a balance between Russian and Chechens in the war. Here it is impossible to prefer any side: there were heroes and villains on both sides. I am a Chechen, and the First Chechen War remains forever the great tragedy of the Chechen and Russian people. Many were killed; many lost their houses and were compelled to leave their homeland. This film is about home, the homeland and portrays these as the most important [things] for all of us. I believe that anyone can always become better than they are at that exact moment. I believe that everyone is identical and I also believe that the cinema can make mankind more human.” 16 SIGNIS Media – N°2/2013 For film fans who are partial to films without closure, the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival provided many good movies without an ending. You can use your imagination to project a conclusion. Perhaps life has become so subtle and arbitrary, endings are no longer relevant. What might matter more is what brings people to the edge. Hollywood of the 30s and 40s excelled at creating non-realities that a majority of moviegoers sought and accepted. The fields of dreams today are difficult to share, they are “private Idahos” that are so self-centred and bravely egocentric as to be pure cinematic narcissism. Was there a theme or overall direction that linked many of the films of the Tribeca Film Festival 2013? I would say that the Festival concentrated on stories that focused upon the conflicts of a single individual. This is the American preoccupation with “character-driven” stories that are written and designed for a known star like Dennis Quaid, or celebrity, like a fashion model turned actress, and the story fits the person, the person does not fit the story. This is not audience-friendly as much as it is “career-friendly”. So movies like Jin and The Rocket wherein the audience cannot identify a known personality then relies solely upon the compulsive originality of the story and the authenticity of the acting of unknowns. These films are like having a really nice piccolo colazione, satisfying and profoundly simple. This festival had very varied and strong offerings. Here are two of the very personal films which are centred on the sudden death of a child. The first film, Bluebird, is directed by the American, Lance Edmands. An air of hopelessness pervades the lives of the inhabitants of a small Maine logging town that seems isolated from the American Dream machine. Biblical in its sentiment, the narrative plummets the “down and out” characters further into job-like despair when a tragic inexplicable oversight occurs that challenges two families to remain civil in the face of a dead preteen. A school bus driver, Lesley (Amy Morton), runs over a sleeping student. She leaves the boy to freeze overnight. Brought into hospital in a coma, his (unstable) mother sees an opportunity to make money and looks at a possible lawsuit. She does not really care about him. It is her mother who looks after him. The father is absorbed by his job problems. Their other child is also drifting. Everyone, including the viewer, looks for signs of grace and redemption. But justice does not seem to be possible. The Broken Circle Breakdown (photo) is directed by the Belgian, Felix van Groeningen. This zany, sexy creative cocktail of music, quirky romance, tragedy and dissolution plunks the heartstrings as a bluegrass team struggles to keep devotion to each other alive. The film starts as a happy intense love story between Elise who has a tattoo shop and Didier who plays in a country and western band. They fall in love and have a child, Maybelle, who dies soon after birth. There is a subtle weaving of past and present that gets shattered when director van Groeningen has his main character denounce nearly every known social institution for supporting war instead of life. The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) was co-founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2002 in a neighbourhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City. Its name is an acronym from “Triangle Below Canal Street” (Tribeca). From April 17th to 28th, the Festival hosted nearly 400 screenings and panels. A total of 89 features and 60 short films from 37 countries were screened for more than 117,000 movie-goers and panel attendees. Joseph Franzelli, Bishop of Lira and also Chairman of the Social Communication Department of the Uganda Bishops’ Conference. The building was constructed on a plot of land donated by the Diocese and started in December 2011. At present the studios are not complete because part of the equipment is still on the way but all other offices are already functioning. On the same day of the inauguration of the Radio Wa building, the bishop inaugurated the new Daniel Comboni Diocesan Offices in Barogole. The construction of this new building was possible thanks to the support of: Manos Unidas (Spain), Archdiocese of Cologne (Germany), MISSIO (Germany), Aid to the Church in Need (Germany), Eine-WeltLaden (Italy), DKA (Austria), Italian Bishops’ Conference (Italy), Latiendo con el Sur / Jaen Local Government (Spain), some anonymous donors from Spain and Holland and, last but not least, the contributions of many Radio Wa listeners. In 2002 Radio Wa, being an active participant in the struggle for peace in Northern Uganda, was not spared the wrath of the rebels. In September 2002, the Lord’s Resistance Army attacked and burnt the premises of Radio Wa, which were then located at the Parish Hall of St. Peter Claver Catholic Parish in Ngetta. This event only reinforced the commitment of Radio Wa to keep working for peace, harmony and development. Six months later and thanks to Fr. This is a unique opportunity to keep in touch with the reality of northern Uganda, especially for those Langi listeners who are scattered all over the world. Radio Wa’s origins Radio Wa results from the Ugandan Episcopal Conference’s decision in 1998 to have a network of FM radio stations within the country. It chose Lira as its main link in the northern region. The idea stalled for several years till Fr. John Fraser, a Comboni Missionary working in Lira diocese, took the initiative of establishing a radio station. By June 2000, he had secured the frequency 89.8 FM, granted by the Ugandan Communication Commission (UCC). It was first designed to cover Lira and Gulu Dioceses, catering for all kinds of listeners, not only the Catholic population. The founder of Radio Wa later started TV Wa and it is still at the first stages of its development. Luo was chosen as the main broadcasting language. Roughly two thirds of the programmes are broadcast in Luo and the rest are broadcast in English. Despite many challenges, Radio Wa (“Our Radio” in Luo, the language of the Lango sub-region) eventually started its broadcasts in January 2001 as a community radio station belonging to the Catholic Diocese of Lira. Fuente: OCLACC/SIGNIS-ALC WORLD Social networks: new spaces for evangelisation On May 12th, 2013 the Church marked World Communications Day. This year, the papal message, drawn up and released in January by Benedict XVI, focused on the importance of social networking sites as “portals of truth and faith”, and “new spaces for evangelisation”. In the message, the former pontiff, who opened the first papal Twitter account at the end of last year, invited people to appreciate the potential of social media sites and urged believers, in this Year of Faith, to consider how their presence on these networks can help spread the Gospel message of God’s love for all people. Around the globe Communications Day was celebrated in many different ways. In Africa, for example, the archdiocese of Nairobi organized the Catholic Media Festival from May 9th to 12th around the theme. One of the media houses, Radio Waumini, also celebrated the tenth anniversary of its foundation. During the media festival students, from primary school to university, families and religious were invited to participate in the various activities and programmes on media awareness. Various media houses were present such as the Pauline Publication Africa; New People, The Seed, Ukweli Video Productions, The Mirror, BEAMS (Don Bosco) and Radio Maria. The Media Festival ended with a solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Martin Kivuva, the Chairman of Communications of the Episcopal Conference of Kenya. He and his wife shared their vision with the Archbishop of Cebu, Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, and the latter supported them in their desire for others “to see the face of Christ through professional coverage of events, documentaries and issues emanating from or concerning the Catholic Church”. As later events proved, what was once one man’s dream became a couple’s vision and is now a visible reality. The result was that the Archdiocese of Cebu and FilProducts Group of Companies founded the CCTN. The network consists of several cable TV stations (satellite) and affiliates in Cebu, Central Visayas and across the Philippines. In the first months of 2013 it broadcast Baylo Ta, a Visayan local drama series co-produced by the Mandaue-based M-Talent Events & Promotions. It was an instant success. Unlike past soap operas, Baylo Ta does not focus on the travails of impoverished characters or the injustices they face. It trains the spotlight instead on a wealthy male heir named Emelio who is poised to be the sole inheritor of a massive family fortune. He wishes to find true love, but is also aware his riches could attract women with the wrong intentions. In his search for a woman who would love him not for his bank account but for who he is as a person, Emelio disguises himself as the family chauffeur while the latter takes on his identity. Baylo Ta stars Aida Patana (who also acted as co-producer) as the main love interest. Patana said she was encouraged to co-produce a local soap opera after attending a CCTN seminar, where someone broached to her the idea of trying out acting. Scenes of the series were shot in Hong Kong, and the public “will also learn lessons from its storyline, such as not to judge people merely by their social status in life”, she said. IMBISA Bishops “get media-wise” Bishops from the Inter-Regional Meeting of the Bishops of Southern Africa (IMBISA) have taken to the Twitter sphere to spread the word of peace ahead of Zimbabwe’s elections planned at the end of 2013. In a two-day ‘Get Media-Wise’ workshop in Johannesburg, the Bishops in May 2013 learnt, amongst other media tools, how to use Twitter as a means of communicating their messages. Father Richard Menatsi, IMBISA Director, said:“This is a brilliant opportunity for the Bishops to take the good news of peace and reconciliation beyond the pulpit and into people’s lives and homes.” The Bishops recently published an open letter in response to Zimbabwe’s referendum and the planned elections for later in the year, calling for: “peaceful elections, free of Nouvelles d’ici et d’ailleurs violence and intimidation”. Bishops attending the workshops agreed that all too often the Church can seem out of touch. Learning these new skills would bring them up to date and better able to communicate their message to the faithful. Father Richard continued: “We draw inspiration from Pope Francis whose commitment to the poor and to peace has made a strong impression on us with regard to our own responsibilities as people of faith. So, in collaboration and in solidarity we will look to use the media more widely in urging our messages of peace.” USA 20 Years Catholics in Media Associates Catholics in Media Associates (CIMA) celebrated its 20th anniversary with a Mass and film and television awards ceremony on April 14th. The Oscar-nominated film Flight, the longrunning police drama, Bones, and the hit television miniseries, The Bible, received the honours at the event.“With CIMA celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, we wanted to do something special,” said Nancy Norton Bevins, president of Catholics in Media Associates and executive producer of the event along with organization vice-president John Kelly. The Bible, which has racked up top ratings on the History cable channel, was conceived by actress Roma Downey and her husband, reality show producer Mark Burnett, after watching the classic film The Ten Commandments together for the first time since they were children. The miniseries was chosen to win the CIMA’s Board of Directors Award. This 10-hour docudrama explores the Bible’s most significant episodes, including Noah’s journey in the ark, the Exodus and the life of Jesus. Flight received the group’s Motion Picture Award. Denzel Washington, nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, plays a high-functioning alcoholic who lands a malfunctioning jet with minimal loss of life and injuries. John Gatins also was nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar. Washington’s “portrayal gives hope to anyone who struggles with pride and addiction,” CIMA said. Bones, a Fox network staple now in its eighth season, stars Emily Deschanel as forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan and David Boreanaz as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth who seek to solve mysteries involving human remains. “An important ongoing dynamic between Brennan and Booth is their disagreement about the roles of science and faith,” CIMA said. “Where Brennan focuses on the physical evidence, Booth, a practicing Roman Catholic, looks for clues in human behaviour and beliefs.” He married Marcella in 1965 and they have four daughters, all now married with families of their own. Peter has enjoyed a long media career and began his career in radio in the Australian state of Victoria. He has a pleasant strong voice, which brought him a lot of radio work as well as voiceovers. By the later 1970s, he was part of the Christian Television Association, an ecumenical organization which produced radio and television ‘spots’. In 1982, he became Director of the Catholic Communications Office for the Archdiocese of Melbourne, which included producing the weekly radio programme The Catholic Hour, on Sunday nights and the weekly television programme (on commercial Channel 7) on Sunday mornings. He was also responsible for public and media relations and organizing interviewees for radio and television. With the de-regulation of religious programmes on Australian television, Channel 7 proposed that the Catholic Office make several 45-minute documentaries per year. Peter, in collaboration with the Jesuits, established a production company, Albert Street Productions, in 1985. For some years he worked within the Diocesan offices producing television and radio productions for both Catholic Communications and Albert Street Productions. This continued until the mid-1990s, with a range of topics, some overtly religious but other stories with more implicit themes. The idea was to take “Christ into the marketplace”. There were also series on such topics as meditation for other channels, and a programme which still continues, Mass for You at Home (over 40 years old now). Archbishop Pell closed Catholic Communications in 1997. In the meantime, other religious congregations became partners in Albert Street. Albert Street eventually closed in 2012. Since his retirement from Albert Street, Peter has worked on a variety of video projects.
