The summer heat has arrived and the consumption of cold drinks and, more specifically, lager beer, is seeing a considerable increase. At home, after a hard day’s work, in front of the television while watching the La Liga final, on a terrace with some friends, at appetizer time on the beach… any time is a good time to enjoy a cool beer. From this week, Mahou Cinco Estrellas is Botín’s beer. Mahou Cinco Estrellas, a typical Madrid lager beer, was launched in 1969 to satisfy the most demanding palate. Its characteristic golden colour, smooth and slightly fruity flavour and its creamy head are a true pleasure for lager lovers. Brewing this beer uses natural and simple but top-quality ingredients: hops, yeast, water and malt. The rest is a matter of good practice, experience and care. Inns, taverns and eateries have existed since time immemorial. What is not so clear is how the concept of the modern restaurant emerged, the one we know today. People who have studied this matter place the origin of these “restaurants” at the time of the French Revolution. When this historic event erupted, French cuisine was at an exceptional stage in its development and boasted excellent professionals, who were all employed in the kitchens of the great houses of the French nobility. When Robespierre guillotined many of these great lords, their cooks found themselves out of a job, and so several of them decided to exchange their previous only master for several new masters whom they could feed at the same time in exchange for economic compensation in premises fitted out for this purpose. And that is how the concept of the modern restaurant took hold. They are our neighbours and, like us, have seen a century come and go. This hairdressing salon opened its doors in the year 1900 under its first owner, Eladio Gurumeta. As we can guess from its name (Kinze is a “hip” way of saying Fifteen in Spanish), it is located at number 15 of calle Cuchilleros, right next to Botín. After five generations of barbers, it is Madrid’s oldest hairdresser’s. When we enter the establishment we can see the walls covered in old photographs and objects pertaining to the old barbers, including an old armchair at the entrance. At Kinze de Cuchilleros, experience counts for a lot and customers are served in a traditional and attentive manner. Many famous people have passed through this salon over the years. At the present time the famous writer Arturo Pérez Reverte is a regular customer of the establishment, as is the journalist Jorge JavierVázquez, among others. Very economical prices, expert advice on appearance, cut, colour and beard trimming and shaving with barber’s razors (disposable, of course), all of which are now a rarity, are the best advertisement and inducement for visiting this old barbershop. In short, a haircut with history. Nieuws Botín Nachrichten Botín Notizie Botín ● ●
