Dear Friends,
This Wednesday we begin the Lenten season. My thoughts and practices of Lent have changed over the years.
While we read in the Preface of Lent that it is a “happy season”, I never looked at it that way as a youngster or
even in my early days in seminary. In those earlier days Lent was always a time of giving something up - usually
candy, sweets or deserts. I remember as a young priest going to a restaurant on Friday and substituting the meat
entrée for fish. It was then that I began to rethink Lent. Is it a sacrifice to give up eating meat for lobster or crab
cakes? It was actually a “trade-off”. I was keeping a church rule but there was no sacrifice. I also remember reading what Pope Leo had said many years before: “ Let your fasting become the banquet of the poor.” Crab
cakes, shrimp, hardly fit the banquet of the poor. Ordering a simpler entrée and putting the difference in the parish
poor box or the Starfish basket at the entrance to the church might be a more appropriate sacrifice. Skipping the
appetizer and putting the difference to help the less fortunate could be a better practice. Over six weeks it can
really mount up.
While on the subject of “giving up”, perhaps instead of giving up something material, we might give up something much more difficult. I recall the saying: “IT IS BETTER TO GIVE UP HATE THAN TO GIVE UP
WEIGHT.” Perhaps calling( or emailing or texting) a relative or friend whom we have been at odds with or
even put a wall between is far more in keeping with the Lenten spirit than giving up a snickers bar (my favorite).
And it might well be a more difficult Lenten sacrifice. Think of that when you listen on Ash Wednesday to the
words in the Book of Joel in the Old Testaments: “RETURN TO ME WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART. REND
YOUR HEARTS NOT YOUR GARMENTS.” Thousands of years ago it was the practice for Jewish males to
tear their outer garment as a sign of repentance. Today, we might rephrase the saying: Look out for others, forgive, show kindness, acceptance and love to those you may have been ignoring. Try to accept those you are
prejudiced against. That in itself is far more meaningful than giving up sweets.
Yes, I have matured in my outlook of Lent. It is now a time of personal and spiritual growth. Now it is a time to
look inward and see how well I do (or do not) live the Gospel message. For those who may attend daily Mass as a
Lenten practice, I encourage you to remember the words my Episcopal colleague has at the exit of his church:
THE SERVICE IS ENDED- NOW SERVICE BEGINS. Lent is a time to become more holy and by holy I suggest the definition of Father William McNamara, noted author and retreat director: “TO BE A HOLY PERSON,
JUST INSERT THE LETTER “W” BEFORE HOLY. A HOLY PERSON IS A WHOLE PERSON OPEN
TO THE NEEDS OF ALL.” To give up our candy and sweets is a much easier Lenten sacrifice. The above is
much more difficult, but it will result in a more meaningful Lent for you and for others.
We all have our own ideas of Lent and how we look at our faith and our God. You must do what is comfortable
for you. For me ,however, trying to live the Gospel message is far more meaningful…..and a little more difficult
than giving up candy!

ASH WEDNESDAY
This coming Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season. This gives rise to two
questions. Why do we come for that dirty little mark? And is Ash Wednesday a holyday of obligation? The
answer to the second question is easy. “NO”. It is not a day when we are obligated to attend Mass. (Also,
there is NO vigil Mass on Tuesday evening.) And yet, on Wednesday our Masses will be crowded. Not
because of the Liturgies, but rather because of the “ashes”. And so we ask “why”? Just about all of us know that the
blessed ashes placed on our foreheads come from the burnt palm branches left over from last year’s Palm Sunday. But now
let’s look at why we come voluntarily to wear this sign of our sinfulness. In the early church only public sinners wore
ashes. These sinners met regularly to prepare for their reconciliation at a parish service and they formed what we would call
“support groups”. As penitents, they used to wear ashes on their heads or in their clothes, hence the image “sackcloth and
ashes”. Symbols of human mortality, ashes represented their complete dependence on the mercy of God. In the
Middle Ages, the support groups dwindled, but sinners remained strong in number. So Pope Urban II ordered up the first
Ash Wednesday in 1091. Ashes were for everybody, and we’ve been placing them on our foreheads ever since. By using
burnt palm branches, the symbol of Christ’s glory has become the symbol of our sin. So this Ash Wednesday, as you stand
in line waiting for the black cross to be placed on your forehead, think about just how much you depend on God and his
mercy. Ask yourself just what changes you and God can bring about in your life during this forty day journey. Working
together, your life can change and only for the better.

heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With

ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday, March 5th, is a day of
fast and abstinence. Catholics 14 years of
age and over are obliged to abstain from
meat and those 18-59 are also obliged to
fast (1 full meal and 2 smaller ones to
maintain strength) unless medical or serious reasons exist. All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence.
In prayer, please remember the sick of our parish.

Men’s Prayer Group
The Church of the Nativity invites all interested men to join
the Men’s Prayer and Reflection Group, which meets every
Saturday morning from 8:00 to 9:00 in the Green Room
(a.k.a. the “crying room”). The meetings involve praying
the morning office, reading the Sunday readings, and discussing their impact on our daily lives. The group is led by
Greg LaNave, Nativity parishioner and professor of theology at the Dominican House of Studies. Please contact the
parish office if you are interested in learning more about
this group.
Church of the Nativity Weather Policy
During inclement weather, the Church and
CCD Offices follow the same schedule as
Fairfax County Public Schools. If Schools are closed the
Parish Office and the CCD Office are closed and there
will be no morning Mass. In addition, all Parish activities
for that day will be canceled.
Weekend Programs and Events
If Fairfax County Public Schools cancel events, such as
on weekends, CCD and all parish events are also
cancelled.
Two Hour Delay
If Fairfax County Public Schools open two hours late,
our offices will open at 10 a.m., but the morning Mass
will be held at its regularly scheduled time, 7:30 a.m.
Any Parish activity scheduled before 10 a.m. will also be
canceled.

Mirando al cielo...pero sin pasarse

Con este octavo domingo, del
tiempo ordinario, daremos paso –el
próximo miércoles de ceniza- a unas
semanas que nos prepararán a la
Santa Pascua. Un periodo, la
cuaresma, que nos vendrá bien –siempre viene bienpara alejarnos de los agobios, para hacernos fuertes ante
los problemas y sobre todo para ir con Jesús hacia esos
días en los que celebraremos los Misterios más grandes
de nuestra fe. ¿Estamos dispuestos?
1.Nos encontramos en un momento histórico
traspasado por muchos y variados contrastes. Y,
además, con contrastes en todos los sentidos: vida y
muerte, pobreza y riqueza, alegría y tristeza, salud y
enfermedad, bienestar y precariedad. Y por qué no
decirlo: mientras que en algunas personas se ha cebado
la crisis espiritual (tal vez por una fe poco cimentada o
formada) asistimos a un fenómeno nuevo: el interés por
lo religioso. Aunque sea leve…pero la fe, y hasta la
misma Iglesia, no deja indiferentes a muchas personas.
La coyuntura de la crisis económica ha incentivado las
entrañas de muchas personas a una apertura o preguntas
por lo divino. La sociedad, que nos ha empujado a vivir
por encima de nuestras posibilidades, ha dado mil
razones a otras personas a mostrarse reticente, y hasta
pesimista, sobre el futuro que nos aguarda.
¿Un mundo sin Dios? ¿Una sociedad sin valores
eternos? Un mundo sin Dios no será un mundo de
recorrido corto.
2. Ser cristianos no es vivir con caras tristes y
menos, recuperando la lectura evangélica de este día,
agobiados por lo que nos atenaza. Tampoco, por
supuesto, asentarnos en un necio optimismo sino en un
sensato realismo: sabemos cómo estamos y sabemos
hacia dónde no queremos ir. Por ello mismo ante un
pensamiento único, ante los dictados que nos impone un
mundo que presume de tolerancia pero que margina al
que no dice lo que él dice o lo que él piensa, los
cristianos, tendremos que recuperar esa faceta de ser
diferentes, de nadar contracorriente e incluso, por qué
no, de resultar incómodos en aquellas situaciones donde
se vende gato por liebre.
El hecho de que creamos firmemente de que
Dios dirige todos los hilos de nuestra existencia no nos

turno, quiere quedarse con toda madeja para manejar
a su antojo el presente y el futuro de nuestra vida
social, económica, cultural o religiosa. Que somos
importantes, mucho más, que las flores y los pájaros
es cierto. Pero también es cierto que, las aves, ante
el peligro saben lanzarse al alto universo y las flores
no dejan de desplegar su aroma característico. Siente
bien o siente mal.
Error, de órdago a lo grande, sería leer el
evangelio de este día y dejar que sea Dios quien
siembre, riegue y coseche.
Peligroso para el futuro de nuestra fe sería
igualmente confiar tanto en la fuerza de lo alto que,
ello, nos llevase a plegarnos de brazos.
¿Confianza
en
Dios?
¡A
ciegas!
¿Absentismo apostólico? ¡Ni por asomo! En el
camino intermedio está la solución: confiar en Dios
significa colocar en sus manos nuestros afanes,
nuestras vidas, ideas, proyectos e ilusiones. Eso
sí….no como espectadores y sí como asalariados de
algo que merece la pena: el Reino de Dios.

en aquello que sea para tu gloria
para el beneficio de los míos y de mí mismo
A disfrutar el presente, sin estar tan pendiente
de lo que pueda ocurrir mañana.

nos invitaba a hacer más oración de alabanza, superando la
frialdad del formalismo en nuestra relación con Dios.
El Papa Francisco destaca que la oración de alabanza
se caracteriza por la espontaneidad. A David, la oración de
alabanza "lo llevó a dejar toda compostura", como a Sara que
después de haber dado a luz a Isaac dice: "¡El Señor me ha
hecho bailar de alegría!" Imaginemos a una anciana bailando
de alegría para celebrar al Señor por el gran favor que le hizo.
Cuando recibimos un regalo, damos gracias. Cuando
tenemos una necesidad, pedimos. Ante un deber, cumplimos.
La alabanza, en cambio, es gratuita. Alabamos a Dios con total
desinterés, simplemente porque se lo merece, por ser lo que es;
no porque lo necesitamos ni porque hemos recibido favores, ni
por obligación. Por eso, la alabanza es la oración más perfecta.
Celebramos a Dios porque es bueno. Lo alabamos porque es
grande y porque su misericordia es eterna. La alabanza no
necesita más motivos ni justificaciones: reconocemos la
belleza de Dios y lo celebramos.
"La alabanza es la forma de orar que reconoce de la
manera más directa que Dios es Dios. Le canta por El mismo,
le da gloria no por lo que hace, sino por lo que El es. Participa
en la bienaventuranza de los corazones puros que le aman en
la fe antes de verle en la Gloria. Mediante ella, el Espíritu se
une a nuestro espíritu para dar testimonio de que somos hijos
de Dios, da testimonio del Hijo único en quien somos adoptados y por quien glorificamos al Padre. La alabanza integra las
otras formas de oración y las lleva hacia Aquel que es su
fuente y su término: "un solo Dios, el Padre, del cual proceden
todas las cosas y por el cual somos nosotros" (1 Co 8,6). Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 2639.
La alabanza brota de lo más profundo del corazón,
está llena de afectos, de calidez, de alegría y es por tanto una
oración fecunda. Es una forma de oración que nos ayuda a
dirigirnos a Dios con espontaneidad, dejando que los afectos
broten con toda naturalidad, sin formalismos ni esquemas
hechos, con absoluta libertad.
El último Salmo, el 150, nos enseña que al entrar al
Tempo podemos alabar a Dios por sus obras magníficas, al ver
el firmamento alabarlo por su inmensa grandeza.

Y nos enseña a hacerlo de manera festiva, con instrumentos musicales, , con cantos y con bailes. Exhorta a todo ser que respira a
alabar a su Creador.
¡Aleluya!
Alabad al Señor en su templo,
alabadlo en su augusto firmamento,
alabadlo por sus obras magníficas,
alabadlo por su inmensa grandeza.
Alabadlo tocando trompetas,
alabadlo con arpas y cítaras,
alabadlo con danzas y tambores,
alabadlo con laúdes y flautas,
alabadlo con platillos sonoros,
alabadlo con platillos vibrantes.
Todo ser vivo alabe al Señor
¡Aleluya!
Se parece mucho al Salmo 97:
Aclama al Señor, tierra entera,
gritad, vitoread, tocad:
tañed la cítara para el Señor,
suenen los instrumentos:
con clarines y al son de trompetas
aclamad al Rey y Señor.
Retumbe el mar y cuanto contiene,
la tierra y cuantos la habitan;
aplaudan los ríos, aclamen los montes
al Señor que llega para regir la tierra.
Regirá el orbe con justicia
y los pueblos con rectitud.
Todo puede ser ocasión para alabar a Dios, la vida humana como
tal, vivida en plenitud, puede ser una oración de alabanza: San Ireneo de Lyón nos dice que «la gloria de Dios es el hombre viviente y
la vida del hombre está en dar gloria a Dios».
Esto parece expresar el Salmo 8, otro extraordinario canto
de alabanza.
Señor, dueño nuestro,
¡qué admirable es tu nombre en toda la tierra! Ensalzaste tu majestad sobre los cielos. De la boca de los niños de pecho has sacado
una alabanza contra tus enemigos, para reprimir al adversario y al
rebelde.
Cuando contemplo el cielo, obra de tus dedos, la luna y las
estrellas que has creado, ¿qué es el hombre, para que te
acuerdes de él, el ser humano, para darle poder?
Por ello, no se trata de alabar a Dios sólo en tiempos reservados
para la oración, sino en todo lo que hagamos y en toda circunstancia:
Al levantarte: ¡Alabado sea Dios!
Al ver el amanecer y el rocío en la ventana: ¡Bendito sea Dios!
Al escuchar el canto de los pájaros: ¡Alabado sea Dios!
Al percibir el aroma del café: ¡Bendito sea Dios!
Mientras vas de camino, alaba a Dios con cantos.
Al comenzar las labores, bendícelo
Al recibir buenas y malas noticias, di como Job: "El Señor me lo
dio, el Señor me lo quitó, bendito sea el nombre del Señor." (Job
1,21)
Cuando experimentes el amor humano y también cuando te
ofenden: ¡Alabado sea Dios!
La gratuidad es otra de las características fundamentales de la
oración de alabanza. Es como un abrazo: te lo doy porque te estimo, te lo regalo por el gusto de verte y de estar juntos; no pretendo pedir nada ni recibir nada, simplemente quiero darte un
abrazo. Así ha sido Dios con nosotros: nos ha amado sin límites
desde la creación del mundo sin más motivos que el amor, por
pura benevolencia. Y así hemos de ser también nosotros con Él.
Al hablar del amor, San Bernardo nos explica de manera
magistral lo que ha de ser la oración de alabanza: "El amor basta
por sí solo, satisface por sí solo y por causa de sí. Su mérito y su
premio se identifican con él mismo. El amor no requiere otro
motivo fuera de él mismo, ni tampoco ningún provecho; su fruto
consiste en su misma práctica. Amo porque amo, amo por amar."
A la luz de todo lo dicho, vemos que la oración debe
tener tres cualidades de las que no se oye hablar mucho: espontaneidad, libertad y gratuidad. Y estas tres cualidades son características de la oración de alabanza.
¿Cómo orar cuando sientes miedo?

Sufro, Señor, porque tengo miedo, mucho miedo, más que
nunca. Yo no sé por qué, o mejor, sí se por qué:b porque Tú,
Señor, adorablemente lo quieres. Y yo lo acepto. Pero también
escucho tu voz de amigo: "No tengas miedo, no se turbe tu
corazón. Soy yo. Yo estaré contigo hasta el final." Repítemelo
siempre Señor, y en los momentos más difíciles, suscita a mi
alrededor almas muy simples que me lo digan en tu nombre.
Tengo miedo, Señor, mucho miedo. Miedo de no comprender a mis hermanos y decirles las palabras que necesitan.
Miedo de no saber dialogar, de no saber elegir bien a mis colaboradores, de no saber organizar la diócesis, de no saber
planear, de dejarme presionar por un grupo o por el otro,
de no ser suficientemente firme como corresponde a un Buen
Pastor, de no saber corregir a tiempo, de no saber sufrir en
silencio, de preocuparme excesivamente por las cosas al modo
humano, y entonces, estoy seguro de que me irá mal.
Por eso, Señor, te pido que me ayudes.
Me hace bien sentirme pobre, muy pobre, muy inútil y
pecador. Ahora siento profundamente mis pecados. He pecado
mucho en mi vida y tú me sigues buscando y amando. Pero te
repito, sigo teniendo miedo, mucho miedo. No lo tendría si fuera
más humilde. Yo creo que me asusta la posibilidad del fracaso.
Temo fracasar, sobre todo, después de que me esperaron tanto.
Pero no pienso que Tú también fracasaste, que no todos aceptaron tu enseñanza. Hubo muchos que te dejaron porque "les
resultaba dura" y absurda tu doctrina.
Nunca te fue bien, Señor: te criticaron siempre y quisieron despeñarte. Si no te mataron antes fue por miedo al
pueblo que te seguía. Pero te rechazaron los sacerdotes; te traicionó Judas; te negó Pedro; te abandonaron todos tus discípulos ¿y no sufrías entonces? Y yo, ¿quiero ser más que el Maestro y tener más fortuna que mi Señor? Jesús, enséñame a decir
que sí y a no dejarme aplastar por el miedo.

Todos queremos seguridad y buscamos seguridades.
Nos da miedo cuando no hay seguridad, cuando perdemos nuestras seguridades o cuando se ven
amenazadas o reducidas.
Te da seguridad un buen empleo, la aceptación
de los demás, las cosas que posees, los amigos que te respaldan, un
entorno conocido, tus habilidades, tu formación profesional, tus títulos, el dinero, recibir reconocimientos y dignidades, ser consultado,
recibir atenciones, tu hogar, una buena salud, etc.
Cuando se ponen en riesgo nuestras seguridades nos entra
miedo. Se derrumban o disminuyen nuestras seguridades y corremos
el riesgo de desmoronarnos. Cuando esto sucede nos encontramos en
la posición del pobre, del que nunca ha tenido nada o del que lo ha
perdido todo y depende totalmente de la gratuidad del amor de Dios.
Es humano tener miedo. No nos extraña que hasta los Papas
sientan miedo cuando son elegidos. Tengo a la mano una oración del
Cardenal Eduardo Pironio, argentino, en que se presenta ante Dios
con mucho miedo. Tuve la gracia de tratar mucho con él y hablaba
con frecuencia de la confianza, de la virtud de la esperanza; tal vez
por el miedo que sentía. Extraigo partes de una de sus oraciones:
Señor, Hoy necesito hablar contigo con sencillez de pobre,
con corazón quebrantado pero enteramente fiel. ,
El Cardenal Pironio sabía ver en el sufrimiento la mano
providente de Dios Padre. En su testamento espiritual escribe:
Que nadie se sienta culpable de haberme hecho sufrir, porque
han sido instrumento providencial de un Padre que me amó
mucho.
Lo que más aprendo de esta oración es la humildad y la
confianza con que se dirige a Dios. Cuando un hijo se dirige a
su padre con humildad y absoluta confianza, lo obtiene todo de
él. El padre es protector y proveedor. Si el hijo expone a su padre su debilidad, su miseria, sus faltas, su condición vulnerable,
y se dirige a él pidiendo ayuda con absoluta confianza, un buen
padre siempre responde.
Cuando sentimos miedo al perder nuestras seguridades
o al no tener seguridad alguna, podemos tener la certeza de que
si lo aceptamos con humildad y acudimos con confianza a Dios
Padre, el amor de Dios vendrá en nuestro auxilio. La confianza
filial lo obtiene todo de Dios.
Cuando sentimos miedo también podemos orar con la
ayuda del Salmo 23: Aunque camine por cañadas oscuras, nada
temo, porque Tú vas conmigo. Tu vara y tu cayado me sosiegan
y del Salmo 30 En ti, Señor, me cobijo, nunca quede defraudado. Sé mi roca de refugio, alcázar donde me salve; pues tú
eres mi peña y mi alcázar.
Cuando sentimos miedo, la roca firme del amor misericordioso de Dios es nuestra seguridad.
