There may never be an off-the-bench
performance like it. Bayern Munich
striker Robert Lewandowski entered
his club’s Sept. 22 showdown with
VfL Wolfsburg at halftime. Wolfsburg
held a 1-0 lead. Having allowed just
two goals all season, the visitors
looked poised for a statement win in
the Bundesliga. Fifteen minutes later,
things looked a little different.
Lewandowski tied the game in the
51st minute. A minute later, he put
Bayern Munich ahead. Two minutes
after that, he set the Bundesliga record
for fastest hat-trick with three goals
in a 3:22 span. He wasn’t even done.
He added a fourth in the 57th minute
and a fifth with a spectacular scissor
kick on the hour mark, becoming the
only Bundesliga player to ever score five
goals as a substitute, and he did it in
less than nine minutes.

make this soup a perfect fit as
summer gives way to autumn.
There’s always one cold snap
when everything changes from
summer to fall. A few more warm
weeks may slip in, but the change
in the air is evident. That’s when I
start thinking SOUP! As a child in
Morocco, I remember the season
shifting, not quite to the extreme
as where I live now, but shifting
nonetheless. As I reminisce,
possibly, it isn’t the temperature
at all, but the memory of my
cooking chores changing that
brings my thoughts to a warm
cup of broth.
This was the time of year
when one of my main jobs in
the kitchen was to sift through
the beans and lentils and make

sure there were no stones. My
mother used lentils and other
beans for some gorgeous
salads, side dishes, and soups. I
remember the feeling of sitting
at the table in the crisp air, on
pins and needles, hoping that
nobody (especially my father)
would bite down and feel a
crunch. Thinking back, my
attention to detail became very
good because of this task!
I have so many beloved soup
recipes, it has been difficult to
choose which to share. I asked
my children, and they all said,
“Dad! Share everybody’s favorite!
Your Pumpkin soup!”
The kids are right; it is a

being a hit, it is high in many
nutrients and spices that ward
off seasonal colds and allergies.
I believe each seasonal change
communicates with our bodies
thus, creating cravings. Fall
brings a craving for color,
warmth, and comfort. A brilliant,
savory bowl of pumpkin soup
is a perfect expression of that.
You can use fresh or canned
pumpkin—I prefer organic
whenever possible—and the
preparation is nearly the same.
Top each bowl of soup with a
sliced, spiced apple or a dollop
of crème fraîche. To your health!
Pumpkin Soup
1 gallon vegetable stock*
1 large (4 to 5 pounds) fresh
pumpkin
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp whole cloves
½cup honey
1 cup heavy cream
2 cups skim milk
*You can make your own stock
by slowly simmering vegetables
and trimmings. I like to make my
own stock with leek, fennel, and
carrots, but a lot of pre-made
varieties are available. I prefer the
organic stocks as others are full of
preservatives.
Cut the pumpkin in half and
scoop out the seeds. (See the
sidebar for a recipe for roasted
pumpkin seeds, a delicious
snack!) Rinse the flesh and cut it
into one-inch cubes.
Bring the stock to a boil and
add the pumpkin and spices.
Simmer the soup for an hour,
then pass the liquid through a
chinois (a cone-shaped sieve for
straining sauces) or fine mesh
strainer into a pot. Bring the
strained soup to a slow boil and
add the honey, cream, and skim
milk. Simmer for 45 minutes.
Serve hot with sliced apple or a
dollop of crème fraîche.

Roasting Pumpkin Seeds
SimpleRecipes.com
offers a few simple tips for
preparing pumpkin seeds.
First, they recommend
boiling the seeds in
seasoned water for 1015 minutes to get flavor
through the shell. They
recommend one tablespoon
of salt for every half cup of
seeds. This also helps soften
the shell if you choose to eat
the seeds without cracking
them open. After boiling,
toss the seeds in olive oil
or spread them on a lightly
oiled baking sheet, and bake
them on the top shelf of a
400°F oven until they start
to brown, which will take
about 20 minutes for large
pumpkin seeds.

Russian daredevil Valery Rozov
scaled Mount Kilimanjaro...
then jumped off.
Valery Rozov, a well-known Russian BASE
jumper and mountaineer has conquered the
highest point in Africa (19,341 feet above sea
level), and made the first ever BASE jump from
Mount Kilimanjaro from an altitude of 17,913 feet
above sea level.
During the jump, Rozov spent more than
one minute in freefall and travelled a horizontal
distance of more than two miles. The elevation
change between the jump point (17,913 feet) and
the point of landing (the Barranco Camp, 12,959
feet) was almost 5,000 feet.
Climbing Uhuru (19,341 feet), the highest peak
of Kilimanjaro took five days, and it took another
two to find a suitable point for jumping and for the
perfect weather to come. Kilimanjaro is the highest
free-standing mountain in the world. As soon as
the sun is up, cloudiness naturally appears around
the mountain’s summit. Wingsuit jumps can be
performed only in clear weather, so it is possible
to get a “clear window” only in the early morning.
A suitable place for the jump was found at the
top point of the Western Breach Wall that towers
above the Barranco Valley.

“The main problem in searching for the ideal
jumping spot was that the wall was not vertical.
We spent a whole day looking for it. After missing
the opportunity to jump, we spent the night in
the crater of Kilimanjaro at 5,750 meters [18,865
feet]. The next day, it was too windy and cloudy, so
we managed to jump only on the third day of our
staying on the summit,” Rozov said.
Rozov has had many unique and interesting
projects. Expanding the geography of his jumps
and discovering new continents, he translates his
dream into reality and rewrites the history of the
world’s great peaks conquest in the style of BASE
climbing, a combination of mountaineering and

BASE-jumping. In May 2013, on the eve of the 60th
anniversary of the first ascent of Everest, Valery
set a world record, performing a jump from Mount
Changtse of the Himalayas at the point of 23,688
feet. In 2015, 125 years after the conquest of the
Kilimanjaro peak, Rozov performed the first ever
BASE jump from the slopes of the mountain and
the highest BASE jump on the African continent.
“The idea of this project appeared 20 years
ago, when I and my friends climbed the Messner’s
route on the Western Breach Wall. With this
project, I continue to develop my idea of BASEjumping from the highest points of different
continents,” Rozov said.

THE CITY
After its first proposal in Minneapolis fell
apart, Minnesota United FC appears close to
finding a Major League home in St. Paul
In March 2012, the
Minnesota Stars entered
the North American Soccer
League season as a leagueowned defending champion,
uncertain whether more than 20
years of uninterrupted soccer
history in Minnesota might
be coming to an end. Dr. Bill
McGuire purchased the team
from the NASL at the end of
that season, rebranding the
club as Minnesota United FC
in March of 2013. Everything
had been looking up since that
announcement at the Midtown
Global Market, as bigger crowds,
more talented players, and
increased media attention had
raised the profile of the club
tremendously. On March 25 of
this year, McGuire stood on a
stage at Target Field with Don
Garber, the Commissioner
of Major League Soccer, and
put the final punctuation on
the fairy-tale story: Minnesota
United had agreed to join Major
League Soccer.
But the story didn’t
end there. At the press
conference, McGuire outlined
his commitment to building
a soccer-specific stadium in
Minneapolis, near the Farmers
Market, but a lack of clarity
about a long-term property
tax exemption the club was
seeking didn’t sit well in stadiumfatigued Minneapolis, and before
long, politicians—among them
Governor Mark Dayton, state

opposition to any project that
would require a public subsidy
of any kind. As spring turned
to summer, rumblings began
of a July 1 consequencesunknown deadline set by Major
League Soccer for a stadium
announcement.
Hope came in the form of
an empty 10-acre lot in St. Paul
at the intersection of Snelling
Avenue and Interstate 94, former
site of MetroTransit’s bus barn.
The bus barn was torn down
in 2002, and while the lot was
used as a staging and storage
area during construction of the
light rail’s Green Line, the land
has been largely unused. With
ridership of the Green Line vastly
exceeding initial expectations,
the bus barn site, the empty

The proposed stadium site sits at the confluence of Snelling Ave. and Interstate
94. The property itself consists of three parcels of land—a 10 acre parcel where
Metro Transit’s bus barn used to sit, an empty 4.5 acre lot which is currently a
delapidated and little-used parking lot, and a 25 acre parcel currently housing
a shopping center. Minnesota United’s stadium would sit on the old bus barn
site, and the remaining real estate would be redeveloped in a transit-friendly
manner with a mixture of commercial and residential property.

Soccer-specific stadiums in MLS
Many Major League Soccer clubs began their lives
in too-small NFL and college football stadiums.
Starting with the Columbus Crew in 1999, MLS
clubs began moving into purpose-built facilities
designed with soccer as the primary attraction
(soccer-specific stadiums, or SSS). Currently, 14 of
the league’s 20 teams have a dedicated stadium,
while two others—DC United and Orlando City—
have finalized plans for homes of their own, and
three of the next four expansions to the league
are expected to take the field with a new stadium
either completed or under construction. The
typical SSS in MLS seats approximately 20,000
fans, give or take a few thousand depending on
market size. The newest wave have primarily
been located near downtowns or urban centers,
and most are built at a cost of approximately
$150 million.

five acre parcel to the east, and
the 25 acre Midway shopping
center to the north have become
a target for transit oriented
development as St. Paul looks
to further the redevelopment of
University Avenue along the new
train route.
Minnesota United has found
an ally in St. Paul Mayor Chris
Coleman and other city officials,
and it seems that McGuire’s
interest in the site predates
United’s public pursuit of a Major
League Soccer franchise by
more than a year. According to
MinnPost’s Peter Callaghan and
Northern Pitch’s Brian Quarstad,
McGuire first met with Mayor
Coleman in 2013 to discuss
the site as a potential home
for Minnesota United. That
interest appears to run both
ways, as emails from Coleman’s
office made public by Callaghan
through an open records
request reveal that city officials
were discussing the possibility of
wooing United in April.
Progress in St. Paul has
been swift, and all signs now
point to a soccer stadium in the
Midway neighborhood being the
centerpiece of a transit oriented
redevelopment stretching northsouth from University Avenue
to St. Anthony Avenue and
east-west from Pascal Street to
Snelling Avenue.
In August, the St. Paul city
council passed a resolution in
support of a soccer stadium at
the site, including a property
tax exemption for the bus barn
site, which is currently off tax
rolls because it’s owned by the
Met Council. Some of United’s
early detractors have done an
about-face as well. Within the
past month, both Governor
Dayton and Senator Bakk have
publicly expressed openness to
the project and a willingness to
help it progress during the next
legislative session. The United
ownership group’s option to
purchase land on Royalston
Avenue near the Minneapolis
Farmers Market expired at
the end of August, and while
Minneapolis and Hennepin
County have remained publicly
open to working with the club,
the St. Paul site continues to gain
momentum.
MLS officials have toured the
site twice, most recently on Sept.
21, when Commissioner Garber
stopped briefly in the Twin
Cities for meetings with United’s
ownership group. Afterward,
he told a gathering of reporters
in downtown St. Paul that he
was optimistic that various
points of the deal were nearing
completion and satisfied with
the site’s location between two
downtowns.
Although there’s plenty for
soccer fans to be optimistic
about, there’s a long enough
history of false starts with
stadium deals in the Twin Cities
to temper excitement until dirt
starts moving at the bus barn
site. It also remains to be seen
what the club’s plans for the
facility are or how they’ll fit in
with the city’s broader transit
oriented development goals,
but public transit is certain to
play a major part in accessing a
stadium located in a high-traffic
urban area. Green Line ridership
has exceeded projections and
will provide a valuable east-
west transit line, and other
nearby areas where fans might
congregate before and after
matches, such as the bars and
restaurants along Grand Avenue
to the south, are served by
MetroTransit buses. The city’s
plan for bus rapid transit along
the Snelling Avenue corridor
will also provide north-south
accessibility.
Still, any added pressure
could be felt. The club will
primarily play games on weekend
evenings, but MLS and ancillary
competitions like the Lamar
Hunt US Open Cup require some
midweek scheduling. Snelling and
Interstate 94 carry hundreds of
thousands of cars each day, and
the intersections of Snelling and
frontage roads St. Anthony and
Concordia Avenues are two of
the most dangerous in the state.
A shortage of parking nearby is
also a concern that could affect
surrounding neighborhoods,
although this problem could
be addressed with new parking
structures as part of the
development, renting access to
the surface lots at other nearby
shopping centers, or using a park
and ride system to shuttle fans
from larger, empty lots, such as
those of the State Fairgrounds.
Because legislative approval
is needed for any property tax
exemptions, even on leased
public land, a final plan is unlikely
before the 2016 legislative
session opens next March.
But it’s an exciting time to be a
soccer fan in Minnesota. Less
than three years after wondering
if there would be another
season, soccer is closing in on a
major-league home of its own.

Leaves are turning and a chill is in the air.
It must be conference football season, and
throughout the Northern Midwest, that means Big
Ten football. While the conference’s East division
has stolen most of the attention with the one-two
punch of Ohio State and Michigan State and Jim
Harbaugh’s return to coach Michigan, the West is
poised to write a script of its own that could prove
equally entertaining, if not moreso. While the East
seems to be cruising toward a Spartans-Buckeyes
heavyweight showdown for the division title (and
most likely, the conference crown), the West is
shaping up as a series of lively undercards, a battle
royale in which just about any team could come out
on top and earn the right to visit Indianapolis as a
massive underdog in the Big Ten’s Dec. 5 title game.
Best of all, it’s gotten more entertaining after
one week of Big Ten play. The conference opener
should have provided some clarity about who was
for real and who was pretending, but instead it left
teams that seemed in contention sitting on the
trash heap, and vice versa.

Gustavo Avila, es quizás el
jinete venezolano más conocido
de todos los tiempos, aún
cuando en los Estados Unidos
de Norteamérica , esté brillando
con luz propia su compatriota
José Javier Castellano y hasta no
hace mucho lo hubiese hecho
Ramón Alfredo Domínguez,
lastimosamente retirado de
manera muy prematura por una
fractura de cráneo, acaecida tras
una caída en una competencia,
justo antes de conseguir su
tercer premio Eclipse Award
consecutivo, como el más
destacado jockey en la “meca del

Es que Avila, no solo fue un
astro de los estribos y las riendas
a lo largo de su carrera, que
incluyó conquistar el Kentucky
Derby y el Preakness Stakes del
año 1971 a bordo del inmortal
Cañonero II, en una historia
tan increíble, que incluso está
siendo rodada una película sobre
aquella gesta, sino que desde
siempre ha sido un verdadero
caballero y uno de los hombres
más humildes con los cuales se
pueda conversar.
Avila nació en Caracas en
1938 en un sector llamado
El Conde, donde luego se
levantarían las torres de Parque
Central.
Emergió de una familia de
pocos recursos y la historia de
su vida se ligó con los caballos
de carreras, por cuanto le tocó
estudiar bachillerato en el liceo
Aplicación en un sector llamado
El Paraíso, donde justamente
estaba enclavado el hipódromo
de la ciudad capital de Venezuela.
“A los muchachos de la época,
nos contó, les gustaba mucho
el hipismo y quienes estudiaban
conmigo en El Paraíso, no
paraban de hablar de los jinetes

y los caballos, en especial de un
jockey llamado Enrique Bouley,
que desde luego, era uno de los
mejores de nuestro país”.
“Por mi tamaño y contextura,
recuerda, algunos me animaban
a probar suerte como jinete
en el hipódromo de El Paraíso
y yo, tal vez por querer tener
ese reconocimiento me animé
a ir al sitio de carreras e incluso
anotarme en la escuela de jinetes
que dirigía por aquellos años, un
señor llamado Ricardo Ramírez”.
Al principio a Avila no le iba
para nada bien. Le tenía mucho
miedo a los caballos purasangre,
porque tenían mucho tamaño
y genio, algo que era notado
por quienes trabajaban en la
profesión y que evidentemente
le quitaba cualquier tipo de
oportunidad.
El tiempo fue pasando y lo
más que había logrado Avila en
su “pasantía” era haberse subido
a lomos de un pony argentino
que tenían en una cuadra,
pues por su inexperiencia,
nadie le confiaba un caballo de
finasangre.
“Mis amigos y conocidos
dentro del hipódromo me
llamaban ’Lorenzo’, un apodo
que me daban por la constancia
con la cual acudía a El Paraíso,
donde muchos creían que no
tenía ninguna oportunidad de
llegar a ser jockey.”
Finalmente, cumplidos los 16
años, llega el momento del debut
para el muy joven y nervioso
aprendiz al que apodaban
“Lorenzo” en forma sarcástica.
“No podré olvidar ese día,
suelta con una sonrisa, era un 14
de agosto, hace exactamente 61
años atrás, pues estamos justo
en agosto…los que montamos
ese día no llegábamos a tres
carreras ganadas, esa era la
condición de la carrera…a mi
me tocó en suerte una yegua
llamada Venus y terminé en el
quinto puesto”.
“Yo estaba tan nervioso,
abundó, que no encontraba
los estribos y luego se me cayó
el fuete en la partida. Estaba
tembloroso y el recorrido me
pareció muy largo, todo un
calvario, aunque solo fueron mil
200 metros”.
LAS COSAS CAMBIARON
Avila fue aprendiendo
rápidamente los rudimentos
de la conducción del caballo,
dominando aquellas moles a las
que seguía temiendo y le hacían
ser muy prudente para evitar
accidentes.
Casi un año más tarde, el 5
de julio de 1955, finalmente Avila
pasa la raya en primer lugar, a
bordo de un caballo llamado
Solís, entrenado por el chileno
Héctor Hernández y con el cual
“sorprendió”, en el llamado juego
del 5 y 6 venezolano, que luego
fue copiado en los Estados Unidos
y se conoce como el pick six.
“Esa carrera, reconoce,
tampoco la puedo olvidar.
Salimos en el tercer lugar y
en la recta final pasamos a la
delantera para mantenernos así
hasta el espejo…era una gran
oportunidad para mi y si ganaba,
como le había dicho a mi Mamá,
que ya no estaba tan convencida
de que yo montara, las cosas
iban a cambiar”.
Al año siguiente, en el tercero
de su ilustre carrera, Avila
terminó siendo el mejor aprendíz
y antes de que terminara
septiembre se había graduado
de “profesional”, al entrar por
vez número 60 al recinto de
ganadores, a lomos del ejemplar
Despreciado, tal y como fue él en
sus comienzos, un caballo que
luego le daría la oportunidad de
ganar su primer clásico, el “José
Antonio Páez”, primero de la
Triple Corona venezolana para
mayor casualidad.
Las cosas cambiaron, como
le dijo a su Mamá. Su forma
de montar había cambiado
completamente y lucía como un
verdadero jinete experimentado
a pesar de su escaso recorrido.
Su intuición, su inteligencia
para afrontar las competencias y
su silla, le llevaron a convertirse
en el jinete del momento y en
su cuarto año de actividad, en
1957, Avila, aquel que le tenía
miedo a los caballos se anotaba
la estadística de jockeys por
competencias ganadas, una
hazaña que repetiría en el año
1958 y en el 1959, (también
ganaría las estadísticas en 1967
y 1973) tras lo cual fue invitado
a correr en la Argentina, un
país fuertemente apegado a la
hípica, como lo atestigua el viejo y
mundialmente famoso tango de
Gardel y Lepera, “Por una cabeza”.
Avila pasó un año por
Argentina, donde reconoce
que le fue muy bien. Tenía a
su disposición animales en las
mejores cuadras de los óvalos
de Palermo, San Isidro y La Plata,
principales circos de carreras
del sureño país, así como un
apartamento en la cosmopolita
Buenos Aires.
“La verdad, señala, aprendí
mucho en Argentina…me di
cuenta que todavía era un
novato, sin embargo, al año
comenzaron a pegarme las
número muy significativo,
teniendo en cuenta que en
los principales hipódromo del
País, como el desaparecido “El
Paraíso” y “La Rinconada”, solo
se corre los fines de semana,
más allá que hubo una época en
la que las iluminación eléctrica
de este último óvalo, permitía
efectuar pruebas durante un día
más cada semana.
Entre sus más significativos
triunfos, se encuentran los tres
premios clásicos “Simón Bolívar”,
la competencia de mayor
importancia en el calendario
hípico venezolano, tres veces en
el Clásico Fuerzas Armadas, una
competencia que genera muchas
expectativas por la distancia de
3 mil 200 metros, cuatro veces el
clásico República de Venezuela
y seis veces el Presidente de la
República, entre otros.

demasiado involucrado en ganar
estadísticas, aunque como
señalamos, pudo conquistar
cuatro, hecho que le dio la
oportunidad de poder montar
en diversos países, como
Checoslovaquia, Inglaterra,
Italia y otros lugares del viejo
continente, además de Canadá,
Estados Unidos, México, Panamá,
Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Colombia,
Perú, Chile y Uruguay, además
de Argentina, convirtiéndose así
en un embajador de la hípica
venezolana.

UN CLÁSICO QUE LO MARCÓ
Una de las competencias
clásicas que más marcaron la
vida deportiva de Gustavo Avila,
fue el Clásico del Caribe, la
prueba que enfrenta a los más
destacados animales de tres
años de los países de la cuenca
caribeña.
Avila fue seleccionado para
correr en la primera edición de
la contienda, por el año 1966 en
Puerto Rico, al potro Victoreado,
que hizo pareja con la yegua

De regreso en Venezuela
Cañonero II mostró aptitud para
las distancia de más aliento y
ante fuertes contendores, lo
que terminó de animar a su
propietario, que a pesar de no
contar con demasiados recursos
para incursionar en los Estados
Unidos, decidió embarcarse en
esa quimera, por un sueño que
tuvo su señora madre, en el que
le decía que Cañoneros ganaría
en los Estados Unidos.
Como pudo envió al caballo
a Miami, en un viaje que resultó
un calvario para el animal, pues
por la falta de unos papeles fue
devuelto a Panamá y tras cuatro
días aislado, lo regresaron a los
Estados Unidos, donde debió
pasar por la cuarentena de rigor.
Para cuando todo esto
terminó el caballo había perdido
unos 35 kilos de peso y para
colmo, fue enviado a Louisville,
sitio donde se correría el
Kentucky Derby por carretera,
en una travesía superior a los
1,500 kilómetros.
Cuando llegó a Churchill
Downs, junto a su caballerizo
y su entrenador Juan Arias,
que no hablaban inglés, nadie
se imaginó que aquel animal
agotado y falto de peso, del que
incluso se burlaban, iba a dar un
cañonazo histórico.
“Yo sabía que el caballo iba a
estar en algo, nos confió Gustavo,
porque un viejo conocido mío,
como el entrenador argentino
Angel Penna, me pidió el favor
de que le trabajara a uno de los
favoritos de la carrera, el potro
Bold Reason”.
“Por supuesto que al bajarme
de Bold Reason, sentí que
Cañonero tenía cuando menos
llegarle cerca, pues incluso me
