FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Parishioners, June is known as a month of graduations. The graduation of 8th graders from our own parish elementary school will be this week. We congratulate them and all graduates for successfully completing the level of education that they have achieved. Graduations are steps in the journey of life. We are all on a journey and our journey gradually progresses. The word graduate comes from the word “grade” which means step or degree. If we think of life in general, we all take steps toward change. It is important that we take the right steps and go in the right direction. We need God to help us. God wants us to use our abilities and talents to make the right choices and move not only ourselves but our society in a direction that is just, good and loving for all. In the month of June, we can reflect also on our ability to move our society with our votes. What steps will our city, state and federal governments take this year? The tablet had two articles last Sunday about the vote in Albany that will take place this month to remove the statute of limitations so that law suits may be brought against only the church and other private institutions for sex abuse. We want to help those who were abused but does that mean we allow the church to be abused by removing time limits on evidence presented and exempting institutions, such as public schools, from the same targeting? This month, the Diocese will be promoting voter registration. Also on the 21st the “Fortnight to Freedom” prayers will be said to ask God to help our government to protect religious freedom. Let us make sure that we use our freedom to talk to legislators and our vote to motivate our representatives so that our laws and society may take steps or graduate toward a better way of life for all. Rev. Padre Darrell Da Costa VOLUNTEER CATECHISTS We are always in need of more catechists, men and women, as our program continues to grow.
