DON WOZNICKI YOUR NEW ADMINISTRATOR Hello (Hola) Christ the King! What a journey it has been for me ever since 1995 when I began discerning my call to the priesthood. Oh, how God has blessed me at each and every parish I have served since my ordination, and now I feel so incredibly blessed to be at this historic, lovely, devout, and faith filled community, CHRIST THE KING! As we get to know each other, I will fill you in more on the twist and turns that led me from a being a young man who never ever considered priesthood (thought I would be married with a bunch of kids – Hence, why I don’t have a load of gray hair today at age 55) to now your Administrator, and God willing (if you want me), your pastor. My faith journey is somewhat like so many of your sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters today (maybe even you) who were born and raised Catholic and then apostatized (“fell away”) from the faith. But God is a relentless lover who pursues His beloved souls no matter how far they wander from Him. God is so good – All the time! And HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER!! [¡Dios es tan Bueno todo el tiempo! Y SU MISERICORDIA ES PARA SIEMPRE!!] Here is a bit about me now – I was born and raised in South Bend, IN (has a small, discreet Catholic college there called, Notre Dame). In 1984, I received my Bachelors in Science in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. In 1987, I moved to Chicago, IL and continued my career as an engineer. It was in 1995, during my time as an Enforcement Officer with The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Air & Radiation Division) and while I was active in a non-denominational Christian Church (I thank God for them bringing me back to Jesus!) that I began to sense the call to priesthood. In 2002, I received my M.Div. and S.T.B. rom the University of St. Mary of the Lake (Mundelein Seminary) and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago on May 18th (St. Pope John Paul II’s Birthday!). My assignments (each and everyone, a blessing, forming and shaping my priesthood, while leaving an indelible mark on my heart) have been as Associate Pastor of St. Norbert (Northbrook, IL. – July 2002 through December 2007); Resident at St. Finbar (Burbank, CA. – January 2008 through December 2008); Associate Pastor of The Church of St. Mary (Lake Forest, IL. – January 2009 through June 2012); Associate Pastor of St. Dorothy (Glendora, CA. – July 2012 through June 2014); Administrator of St. Bruno (Whittier, CA. – July 2014 through June 2016); and now, Administrator of CHRIST THE KING! What is a Chicago priest doing in LA and especially as the Administrator of Christ the King? Since 1998, just before entering the major seminary, I have sensed “a call within a call” to help bring a more dedicated pastoral presence of the Church within the entertainment community while bringing more truth, beauty, and goodness to the entertainment culture. While in the seminary, I came to LA during my Fall, Spring and Summer breaks to work in production to get a better understanding of the entertainment industry and what the people deal with. I worked on commercials and even a TV Soap Opera called Sunset Beach. As a priest, I also became a chaplain for Act One, a Christian mentorship program here in LA for writers, directors, and producers. In 2007, I stayed in LA for one year to investigate how a dedicated ministry/chaplaincy to the entertainment community working through the Archdiocese of LA might unfold. In July 2014, I began what is called the “incardination process” to transfer to being a priest for the Archdiocese of LA (It’s like downloading an app onto your smart phone – it takes time, 5 years!). I am currently entering my 5th year and soon to be “incardinated” (downloaded!). My entertainment ministry (“call within a call”) is what has brought me to you right here at Melrose/Vine! I believe God has something specially planned for Christ the King in this work of evangelizing the entertainment culture. But what impresses me the most about Christ the King, is what I have seen (and who I have met) so far and the faith tradition this parish holds. Today, this is a talented and diverse faith community comprised of a vibrant Hispanic community together with Filipinos and people of every other mix (I am Polish-American). This is a community that has a beautiful devotion to the Mother of God and Our Lord’s Merciful Sacred Heart. What has made Christ the King great (and what will make it even greater) is a humble parish that comes together in faith to worship and love Jesus – Our source of strength to deal with the challenges life deals and who offers us unlimited love and forgiveness as we struggle with sin – In short, a faith community grounded daily in the mantra – “Jesus, I Trust in You!” [Jesus, en vos confio!] Christ the King – I am so pleased God has brought me to you! I look forward to meeting and getting to know you and begin serving you! Fr. Don Woznicki PARISH CALENDAR 2016 Date Time Event July 03 Sunday 9:45 AM Eng. Parents should avoid lecturing and start talking Lecturing teenagers may feel like the right path to take, especially if they are starting to develop bad habits or make poor choices, but lecturing is usually the least effective way to get your message across. Children tend to see lectures as condescending and abstract, and this detracts from the wisdom and advice you are trying to provide. Instead of lecturing, try to engage your child in calm, open conversation that addresses the issue while allowing you both to talk about what’s going on. For more tips and a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Communication Tip No. 11: Why Lecturing Doesn’t Work,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227. From Monsignor Paul Montoya I want to thank everyone who participated and helped in the Mass for my retirement last Sunday. I was overwhelmed with your kindness and for showing me all your appreciation and love. May the Lord bless you and keep you, Msgr. Paul There will be no morning mass and the Parish office will be closed. El lunes es el día de la Independencia y por esta razón no habrá misa de la mañana y la oficina parroquial estará cerrada. Jubilee Year of Mercy July 3, 2016 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting to “call down fire from heaven” (Luke 9:54–55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth disciples today, Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10–11), showing us how to be Jesus’ “missionaries of mercy” this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to work together in the community of the Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jerusalem in today’s first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So, going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke’s image for Eucharist), and Jesus’ healing promise of unfailing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what God’s kingdom looks like in action. “Go, preach the Gospel,” Pope Francis’ saintly namesake of Assisi is said to have instructed his first friars, “and when necessary, use words!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
